Address book hangs whenever I click on preference

address book hangs whenever I click on preference

The AddressBook preference file is:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
The AddressBook data is in the folder:
~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
( ~ = your home folder)
Try first moving the preference file to the Desktop (while AddressBook is not running) and then start AddressBook and see if that helps.
If all else fails, you could move the data out of the folder mentioned above and thus start AddressBook fresh.

You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

  • Address Book Hanging When Choosing Custom Image

Address Book app in Tiger (10.4.6) hangs whenever any attempts to change the default image of the contact is done. The console displays the following message (multiple lines with same message):
    CDeviceList::CDeviceList: Found 0 devices.
It seems that it only stops when it finally turns on the isight camera. It takes a relatively long time to do that. After the camera is found, any interaction with the Address Book interface will trigger the hang and the message in the console.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

I never could figure out how to do this via the GUI and had to resort to a bit of "trickery". i.e.:
    - quit the Address Book application.
    - in Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences and double click
on com.apple.AddressBook.plist ( or just type
    "open ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist

    - in the property list editor, delete the value for

    - save the file
    - quit the Property List Editor
    - start Address Book

  • Address Book hangs Up when Smart Group defined as Union of Groups

I have rendered the Address Book Application on my macBook Pro running OS X 10.7.2 useless.
For the first time, I set up a smart group. I defined the smart group to be the union of a whole series of not-smart groups. That is to say membership in the smart group was defined to be any contact which was contained in a list of probably about 10 groups. No group would have had more than 30 contacts.
From the moment I tried to look at membership in my smart group, the Address Book Application has been hung. It spins its wheels and goes nowhere, and shows nothing. In the Force Quit window the application is described as being unresponsive. After I carry out a force quit, I start it up again and it hangs immediately. I have to force quit again.
Any ideas as to how I can retrieve functionality out of this this situation?

I found a solution for my problem.
I went into system preferences for iCloud, and removed the tick box for Address book. A dialog then advised me that if I really wanted to do this, that all my contacts would be removed from my macBook, but would remain in iCloud. I gave my agreement to that. As a result all my contacts were removed from my macBook and all my ordinary groups. The smart group, whose definition was the thing that had intitated my problem remained. When I started the Address Book application, it no longer immediately hanged. I clicked on the remaining smart group and used one of the drop down menus to delete this smart group. I then went back into system preferences for iCloud and ticked the box for address book. I then restarted address book, and all my old groups and contacts reappeared, except for the smart group I had explicitly deleted above. Now the application works as it did before I created the smart group. The only problem is that now apple needs to improve the logic that executes generating the membership of a smart group so it can handle a smart group that is the union of a bunch of other groups without hanging the application.

  • Address book crashes whenever I try to open it.

Whenever I try to open Address Book, I receive the messge, "Address Book quit unexpectedly."  Problem Details and System Configuration are then shown, with the option to click "OK" or "Reopen."
Most of the time, when I click "Reopen," I receive the message: "Restore Windows.  The application 'Address Book' unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again?"  I am then given the choise of clicking, "Don't Restore Windows" or "Restore Windows."
In general, I've been clicking "Restore Windows," although I really do not know what that means.
This problem started as soon as I installed 10.7.  Gradually, it has been getting worse, in that the crashes are now occurring every time I try to open Address Book.  Also, increasingly, the program requires several cycles through the choices given above, before it will open and stay open, though sometimes it crashes after having been open for a while, too.

I did some more rooting, and may have a solution...
I had a similar problem--changed a calendar entry on my iPhone this evening, then later synched it with my Mac. Saw that all contacts on the iPhone, and in the Address Book on the Mac were gone. Got home, went to my TimeMachine backup, which would crash any time I tried to restore Address Book. Tried deleting Address Book, but was only presented with a dialog that it was impossible, since AB is part of the system. Had a sense it was some type of file/DB corruption. Was at wit's end, but found a solution:
As you see in the screen grab above--these are the files that need to be replaced via TimeMachine--the only catch is to find these library files in Lion, from the desktop, you need to hold down Option while clicking Go in the menu--there you will see your library, and can go from there. So far, I've done a sync between the iPhone and the Mac, and all appears to be in order.
Luckily, I use Outlook as my main contact manager, so it merely is an annoyance insofar as synching, but still...
Hope this can help with your situation...

  • BPS - Exchange 2007 - Address book hangs - Net.riv.vm.StackOverflowError

Hello.  I have recently installed BPS on our Exchange server.  One of our users has an 8830 world edition that now hangs when he tries to access the address book on the device.  The address book was fine when he would sync via desktop.  The hanging address book also prevents caller ID info from displaying when a call comes in...it only shows the phone #.  When the address book is opened the device freezes and the only way to get functional again is to pull the battery.  When the device restarts he receives this message:
    Uncaught exception:
    Net.riv.vm.StackOverflowError
Any information on this is greatly appreciated.

  • Blackberry 8820 Pearl Address Book Hangs

Hi I have a blackberry 8820 pearl, randomly the blackberry hangs when entering the address book. The symtom is when you press the address book icon the blackberry display appears to hang. However if you press the backup button/arrow all is OK again, all other functions are OK, but the address book can't be accessed.
Removing the battery and replacing it seems to be the only way to gain access to the address book again.
This seems to happen about once a fortnight and I can't put my finger on what triggers it.
    Any help appriciated!

Odd. I would make sure you do a regular backup of your BB.
Do you have content protetion on the address book?
Look at Options > Security > General Settings > scroll down to Content Protection, is "Include Contacts" enabled?

  • Address book hangs

Everytime I search a contact in address book, it gets stuck to one contact.  Then clicking on any other contact, does not display the contact info.  Also then I cannot search for any contact.  I tried to find a solution using google search and came across a solution in deleting the addressbook-v22.abcddb file from the library/application support/addressbook folder.  Tried it, and address book started working in terms of ability to look at contact details by highlighting it, however, as soon as I try to search a contact, the behaviour repeats itself.  I have also tried to repair permission and removing the address book from spotlight, but none of these work.  Any one has any suggestion?

I had the same problem, and followed the suggestion to delete the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb file. Still had the same problem.
Also tried to export all contacts as vcards, delete the existing contacts, and reimport. No help there. I am syncing with iCloud, and it's not easy to turn that off without creating other messes, so I left it on.
I finally deleted two other files: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and one other in the same folder, (oh, no, I can't remember exactly the name) which was not recreated when I relaunched Address Book. The mystery file (/com.apple.AddressBook.abdb.plist, maybe??) might be the one that was breaking things, but I'm not sure.
Now my search works fine, and Address Book doesn't get stuck on one contact.
Try just deleting the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist file and relaunching Address Book. The other file I deleted might be residue from a migration.

  • Address Book hangs on open

I am running a MacBook on 10.5.5, updated the day it came out. It may be important to note that I tried the evaluation version of Contactizer Pro, but was not impressed and removed it.
    So my problem is this:
Whenever I open Address Book, it begins to open by showing the highlighted dot on the dock, but a windows never appears. Force quit displays that is is open but not responding. Occasionally, if I wait 20-30 minutes it will open and work normally. The last time it started working normally, I made a backup of all my contacts, so if any of the repair processes require I nuke the program and start over, fine!
Anyone know how to fix this? I wanted to try syncing my contacts with Gmail, but never even got started because of this mess. Thanks in advance!

It seems other people are also complaining about this problem. I have previously replied to another thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8144444#8144444
I also cannot open Address Book since installing 10.5.5 in both my computers, synced with MobileMe. I am not running any other program to manage my contacts.
It seems it is the interface that does not work, since changes do update if you click on something, quit Address Book and open the app once again.
    Console reports:
    <08/09/23 11:53:37 Address Book[3932] * -[NSCFArray insertObject:atIndex:]: attempt to insert nil>.
    Anyone know what this means?

  • Address Book - Hangs on import

I try to import a 300 record CSV file. Address Book says "not a valid CSV or TXT file".
The formatting looks good, Excel likes it, and it does have CSV suffix.
So I try saving it as tab-delimited (.TXT) and AB will recognize it.
I go through the fieldd matching exercise.
If I click forward to see the "next record" and it hangs indefinitely with the spinning wheel. If I wait long enough it gives me the option to cancel.
Try again...if I just click ok, it does hangs doing nothing ("ok" not longer highlighted, no spinning wheel, no importing or CPU consumption). If I clock around different windows though it will eventually unstick with no progress.
On the last attempt to import the TXT file with no field mapping changes, the "ok" and "cancel" button actually disappeared from the window.
Any ideas? This is AB version 4.1.2.

I finally got the import to mostly work. I created new .txt files that contained no more than 60 contact records and the import worked well (although not perfectly). It seems that data fields that were not told to be omitted (especially street address fields- in my experience) were dropped by the import.

  • Need to reset/reinstall address book

I installed a trial version of AddressX and ran it once. Yikes. Now my address book hangs whenever I start it. I have to force quit every time. I need to clear it out or reinstall it. Does anyone know how? Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
Let's do a test of the AB application by creating a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User attempt to launch the Address Book application. This will tell us if there is a problem with the application. See:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh168.html
If it works as that New User, then we can purge some preference files without doing anything to the application.
Also, use Disk Utility from the Applications/Utilities to Verify the hard drive -- this is different from Verify or Repair Permissions.

  • Address Book Disabled

    Mac OS 10.4.5
    896MB RAM
    G4 DP 500MHz
I opened Address Book and everything except the following are grey (non-clickable):
File: Import (However, vCards, LDIF, & Text File are grey.)
    File: Send Updates
Edit: Find (However, Find & Use Selection for Find are grey.)
    Edit: Special Characters
Card: Add Field (However, everything is grey in this area, too.)

When I click on Preferences, nothing happens.
I've used Disk Utility and repaired permissions. But that doesn't help. I've tried clicking on the Address Book data file and telling OS X to use Address Book to open the file. But Address Book is grey in that window.
    I'm out of ideas.
    G4 DP 500MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

The Combo reinstall didn't solve the problem. In fact, it almost made me have a heart attack. All the applications quit functioning. Only the applications I installed on another volume worked. I was lucky enough to have Disk Image still working when I tried to mount the MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.5PPC.dmg file again. I tried reinstalling again but the installer immediately stopped, mentioned there were errors, and recommending try again. (When that happened before, that means REFORMAT, REINSTALL, not good.) Lucky enough again, I immediately clicked on the previously non-functioning applications which have now decided to work again.
Address Book is still in its own little world and the original problems still exist.
In the /Library folder, the Address Book Plug-Ins folder is invisible. The name is underneath an invisible folder. Click on the name and the folder immediately appears and both the name and folder immediately disappear.
I did create a New User and Address Book is functioning properly in that account. So the problems are related to my home account.
Thanks in advance for any information (and although Apple does mention it can fix broken Address Books as well, no more combo updates!! :-p )

  • Clicking on a record in address book causes it to hang and eventually crash

There are some strange records in my Address Book that have lots of entries within that entry in the fields (not a record I created) that I'd like to delete, for every time a search ends on that record, Address Book HANGS. Sometimes from Email I can open another record using "Open in Address Book" to get out of the hang, but this is really a serious problem. How can I fix this? I try to export a backup of Address Book and it hangs. What can I do to rescue my Address Book?

    HI David,

  • Setting Exchange as default address book

I use only Exchange to store my email, contacts, and calendar data. Unfortunately, Address Book insists on also having it's "On My Mac" folder/account, which I can't seem to delete. I wouldn't care except that whenever I create a new contact (or "Add to Address Book" from within Mail), it automatically creates the contact within On My Mac, and not within my Exchange account where I keep all my contacts. It's a bit annoying having to go in and manually move the contact from On My Computer to my Exchange account.
Is there any way to set a "default" account within Address Book such that I can have it automatically use the Exchange one?
    Dan

    Problem solved:
    Open Address Book
Hit Cmd+; or click Address Book \ Preferences
    Click Accounts on the toolbar
Under the "On My Mac" account, change the setting for "Default account for new contacts".
That's it! So glad this setting is in here. A bit hard to find (I just stumbled upon it a few moments ago), but at least it's there.
