Address book Imported email addresses as "other" instead of "email"

Imported address book from CSV and all contacts emails came in as "other". How do I batch change them all to be under "email" instead of "other"??

Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

Address Book imported all of my email addresses from Mail without warning

My Address Book suddenly was full of new contacts, every single email I got in the past had it's sender copied to my address book without me importing anything. They were just there. A total mess. I now have to manually erase all the contacts I don't want
How can I prevent this from happening again?

I have no clue. Just opened Address Book today and there they were. stuff like [email protected], mails that I got only once, or five different email addresses from the same contact, each as a single contact file. I am no stranger to isync and address book, never experienced anything like that.

Address book import

I have a file of comma delimited email addresses that I have attempted to import. Import.text file. I keep getting a message 'The file you selected does not appear to be a valid comma separated values (csv) file nor a valid tab delimited file, please choose another file.'
Is there a way to import just a list of email addresses?

Address Book -- Importing CSV File created by Numbers

I'm trying to import a csv file generated from MS outlook into address book. When I attempt to import the csv file that Outlook created, Address Book is able to recognize the file. However, I need to modify the file before importing. To do that, I opened in Numbers, deleted some columns and renamed some columns. Then, I exported from Numbers as a .CSV file. However, when I try to import the .CSV file created by numbers, I get the error that I have modified with Numbers, I get the error "Text file import failure".
Does anybody know why address book can't import a CSV file created by Numbers?

Many people have run into this problem, including myself. I had worked many hours on a spreadsheet in Numbers, exported to CSV, and received the error message when trying to import into Address Book. The answers to this dilemma are out there, but tidbits of the whole answer are spread around discussion boards. So I hope to consolidate those answers here.
The main problem for me -- and it's reasonable to assume that others receive the "Text File import error" for the same reason -- is that 1) I had commas in my spreadsheet, and 2) I had hidden RETURNs in the spreadsheet. Once I got rid of those two things, I had no problem importing into Address Book.
Deleting Commas>
The problem with commas in your spreadsheet is that the CSV format uses commas to distinguish when a new cell is formed. So having other commas will inevitably confuse Address Book during the attempted import. I didn't have too many commas in my spreadsheet, so I was able to quickly remove them. Yet, if you have dozens or hundreds of cells with commas in them, you'll need an easier solution. I imagine opening Number's Inspector>Cell Inspector>Format will have the solution of removing commas from, say, currency amounts or something else. Yet, how many commas arise in contact information? Perhaps the easiest way is to use the same method of removing those hidden RETURNs. Read on...
Deleting Hidden RETURNs>
You can't see them, and I couldn't find a "show invisibles" option in Numbers. So you need to search and find them. Yet, how do you search for something hidden? Do the Command-F thing to bring up the search field. The search bar should automatically be ready to search what you type. Hitting the Return key will do nothing for you, but hitting Shift-Option-Return will (you'll likely need to hit Return again to actually perform the search). Numbers will point out how many times these hidden returns are in your spreadsheet, which cells contain them, and give you the option to automatically replace them with something else (a space is a safe option). You can do the same search and replace with commas too.
Save your spreadsheet, export it as CSV, and -- as long as the only errors stemmed from commas and hidden RETURNs -- you shouldn't have a problem having Address Book import it. Good luck!
PS- After importing my spreadsheet, I noticed that some of my Smart Groups in Address Book were not showing some people who should have automatically been in there. The problem was that the Smart Group search had straight apostrophes in it, but the imported contact had curved apostrophes. The computer saw these as two unrelated characters. After some copying and pasting, the problem was solved.

If you can't get the exported .csv file to work you might consider using Migration Assistant: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518, particular if you need to move more than just your contacts. There is some granularity in the options on what to transfer but I'm not sure if you can choose to just your migrate contacts.

I don't have any problem with my system. My guess is there is something there you aren't quite getting. I'd recommend a visit to your Apple Store, AASP or to contact AppleCare so they can coach you personally.
You can also play with the Address Book Preferences. However to see how changing a Preference affects the Address Book drag the Preferences window off of the Address Book so you can see both the Preferences window and Address Book Windows. Then toggle a Preference and you will see it instantly changes in the Address Book.

3000 old emails back to 2009 came along for the ride when I transferred aol address book to Mac address book. All attempts to delete en masse have no results. Too much stuff. Procedures?

I'd try deleting 50 at a time - 3000 is a stretch.

Personal address Book - Import

Some webmail users want to do a bulk add from Global address Book to Personal address book....this seems to be a manual process....is there a better way of doing it ....instead of adding the users one by one manually....?

There is no "supported" method of doing this. Some folks have written scripts to help. In any case, there's nothing I'd feel comfortable giving a user to use. Everything would be done on the server level.
How about giving them access on a dropdown to the global adddress book? I think the Customization Guide talks about doing that.

Sync Address Book with Yahoo Address book?

just wondering if its possible to some how sync Address Book with Yahoo Address book?
That is... I have an elaborate Address Book setup on Yahoo, I'd like it so that if I use Yahoo Address Book and create/delete contacts that when I get home and use Address Book, Address Book syncs the contacts structure to the yahoo structure, without me manually intervening...
Is this possible or is there a tool/widget that does this already?

while looking for somehting else, i found something here in the discussions that might do the trick. it involves another web-based address book, but might work for you. try getting the plaxo address book plug-in, and then sync your yahoo contacts with plaxo, and then sync that with address book. i'm not sure of the order that would give you the best results, but i'm working on using plaxo as an online backup of my address book, as i will most-likely not be using plaxo otherwise.
my concern for you would be whether one would write over the other, so back up your address book first, or even export the entire thing as a vcard file to your desktop, and then you can re-import and merge them... that way you can sync with your yahoo account, and then add whatever is already in your address book and merge whatever is necessary.
search here in the discussions for the plaxo plug-in, and see if that sounds like it would work for you. the only issue i have right now is that it seems that the plaxo install has somehow affected my icalfix plug-in, but i'll look into fixing that this weekend, i'm sure i just need to move some plug-ins around.

I add a contact to Address Book app eg [email protected], this address is not imediatley available to use in Apple Mail app.
The address [email protected] eventually appears in the Address panel in Maill app, it can take from 3 minutes to hours to appear, surely both apps are reading the same database.
This is particularly problematic when adding new contacts to groups and then emailing that group, Im never sure the group in Mail app is the same as the group in Address Book app.
Nothing seems to speed up this process ie quitting and re-opening Mail app or Address book app.
I have tried deletting "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" ~/Library/Aplication Suport/Address Book
I have tried forcing ~/Library/Aplication Suport/Address Book to re-index.
I have also restarted, repaired permissions, ran fsck -fy in single user mode.

Because the sender has their name as part of the email address that is sent, and when they send you a message that matches the one in your Address Book, it's updated to show their name as Mail received it. But if you had previously sent them email before that update occurred, then your Previous Recipients database in Mail doesn't use that newly updated information in Address Book.

I already have three address books created for me by Thunderbird. I add all new addresses to one of those but am afraid to delete the other address books because some of their addresses are not repeated in my "main" address book. So if I don't delete all the names in one of the existing books, I need to create an empty book that will not mix the addresses with those in another address book. Select Help/Troubleshooting Information, click Show Folder to open the profile folder in your OS's file manager, exit TB, delete (or move to another location) abook.mab (Personal Address Book) and history.mab (Collected Addresses). When you restart TB, you should have empty PAB and CA address books.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, when composing a message, the address is not completed when typing is begun. I have checked the Mail Preferences - Composing and there is a check mark beside "Automatically Complete Addresses". The "Configure I.DAP" window is blank and I do not know what, if anything, should be in that window.

Address Book's street address fields are often way too limiting. For example, often there is a second and third line to a street address.
Example:

Is there any way to input such addresses into Address Book?

yes, you would start typing the first line in the street field of the address, then click return after building, then on second line type the street address, and after St, click return, the type the suite, then after the last 0 click return...
I believe the format would be exactly how you have it formatted out in your post.
