Address Book Importing From Entourage

Hello,
With the latest version of Microsoft Office on my Mac Pro and MacBook Pro, when I export from Entourage to import into Address Book, there is a problem with some data loss. It seems as if not all telephone numbers and email addresses are imported. The tab delimited text file that Entourage creates looks normal when viewing the information from Address Book prior to importing, but some of the data is left out anyway. All other data (addresses, notes, etc...) seems OK. Any ideas?
Thanks

Entourage can export vCards which can be directly imported by Address Book. Simply select all your Entourage contacts and drag them into an empty folder on your Desktop. This will give you a folder full of vCards. Import them directly into Address Book.

Hi Jonathan, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    For Address Book...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
Doubtful any of those will be of use except...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata/<36 digits>:ABPerson.abcdp
Which AB in 10.5 or higher should import I hear.
The other way would be to use Migration assistant.

Relax. Your address book database is corrupted.
If you are syncing your Contacts with MobileMe or something else, disable it for now.
Backup your address book by going to File>Export>Address Book Archive.
    Quit Address Book.
Open your Library by holding down the Option (alt) key while selecting the Go menu in Finder. Select Library. Navigate into your Application Support/AddressBook folder and delete the addressbook-v22.abcddb file.
Open Address Book. It will recreate the database from the raw data.
See how that works. If it is ok, then reenable syncing and see how that works.

If you can't get the exported .csv file to work you might consider using Migration Assistant: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518, particular if you need to move more than just your contacts.  There is some granularity in the options on what to transfer but I'm not sure if you can choose to just your migrate contacts.

  • Can I import address book info from mac 10.5 to 10.7

Can I import address book info from Mac 10.5 to 10.7?   It tells me "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X.  You have Address Book 4.0.6."

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico my first language is Spanish. I do not speak English, however I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
Try moving just the folder at Mac HD/users/~/Library/Application Support/Address Book from 10.5 to the same location in 10.7.
Or in Address Book on the old Mac go to the File menu and choose Export Contacts Archive, copy that file to the new Mac and in Address Book on the new Mac go to File menu Import, browse to the archive file on the new Mac and choose it.

Trying to import my old address book and a collection of emails from Outlook Express 5.0.6 to Mail2.0.2. I've tried everything that Outlook requires and no luck yet. I am reluctant to reload all those names, addresses, etc. into my new iMac G5. Also, I have many emails from my old iMac 333 and need them for my new G5 mail files. Can I read them into Mail 2.0.2 ?

I was having no success at all when I was trying to import mail data from Outlook Express to Mail on the same office G4 Tower where I just upgraded to Tiger, where all the Apple docu says it is possible...
    Then I realised,
    1. When in X, when importing data from OE, Classic has to be booted, my only and originally OS 9 (installed X on another partition) is to "heavily loaded" with a lot of 3rd party extensions etc, it never loaded completely
Solution: Install another clean and lean copy of OS 9 somewhere else, then designate this as your Classic, and make sure you only have one copy of OE and one set of your Identities etc in the Document folder
    2. The easier way out is if you have Office X or Office 2004, use Entourage to import everything from OE, then use Mail to import from Entourage.
    Cheers

  • Mail 2 crashes while importing from Entourage X

    Hello all:
I am trying to move over from Entourage X to Mail/Address Book/iCal under Tiger. However, when I try to run the import from Entourage feature in Mail, I am unable to import my mail files from Entourage.
Specifically, the problem I'm having is that Mail crashes mid-way through the import process. When I restart Mail, it attempts to re-start the import process but crashes again. If I hit "Cancel" I can see part of my folder structure under the "Import" folder, but no mail messages in it.
One possibility is that my Mail database in Entourage is very large, with thousands of mail messages and a fairly complicated folder structure. Based on the progress bar, I estimate a total import would take about an hour or so. The crash appears to happen 10-15 minutes into the import process.
Does anyone have any suggestions how I might be able to get around this? I would very much like to switch over to Mail - I assume that it is a better application than Entourage.
    Thanks,
    Sohil

Let’s fix the second problem first. Step 4 in the procedure below will cause Mail to treat everything still on the server as if new and try to download it again. Hence, before proceeding, you my want to delete from the server any messages you don’t want to be downloaded again.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Importing from entourage 2001

    hello
I just bought a new iMac G5 and I would like to import my mail from my old computer, where I was using entourage 2001....it is driving me nuts trying to do this!
I have tried searching in the Microsoft User Folder for a Mail folder to copy to my new hard drive, but when I choose something, like Microsoft 2001, Main Identity, it will not let me fully copy it (it doesn't let me copy the database), because I don't have enough priveledges....but I don't even know if that is the right file?!
    please help!!!!

    Hi Spacefish --
You have both 'old way' and 'new way' approaches to this:
    a) old way(s) -- drag contacts out of Entourage to the Desktop as vCards, drag into Address Book. Or, get the wonderful "Import/Export Entourage" applescript from macscripters.net
    b) new way -- if you have Entourage 11.2.3 and Tiger, you can use Sync Services to automagically synchronize your Entourage contacts over to Address Book. Check Entourage help for "sync services" or visit the Entourage MVP site (www.entourage.mvps.org) for more info.

  • Address Book -- Importing CSV File created by Numbers

I'm trying to import a csv file generated from MS outlook into address book. When I attempt to import the csv file that Outlook created, Address Book is able to recognize the file. However, I need to modify the file before importing. To do that, I opened in Numbers, deleted some columns and renamed some columns. Then, I exported from Numbers as a .CSV file. However, when I try to import the .CSV file created by numbers, I get the error that I have modified with Numbers, I get the error "Text file import failure".
Does anybody know why address book can't import a CSV file created by Numbers?

Many people have run into this problem, including myself. I had worked many hours on a spreadsheet in Numbers, exported to CSV, and received the error message when trying to import into Address Book. The answers to this dilemma are out there, but tidbits of the whole answer are spread around discussion boards. So I hope to consolidate those answers here.
The main problem for me -- and it's reasonable to assume that others receive the "Text File import error" for the same reason -- is that 1) I had commas in my spreadsheet, and 2) I had hidden RETURNs in the spreadsheet. Once I got rid of those two things, I had no problem importing into Address Book.
    Deleting Commas>
The problem with commas in your spreadsheet is that the CSV format uses commas to distinguish when a new cell is formed. So having other commas will inevitably confuse Address Book during the attempted import. I didn't have too many commas in my spreadsheet, so I was able to quickly remove them. Yet, if you have dozens or hundreds of cells with commas in them, you'll need an easier solution. I imagine opening Number's Inspector>Cell Inspector>Format will have the solution of removing commas from, say, currency amounts or something else. Yet, how many commas arise in contact information? Perhaps the easiest way is to use the same method of removing those hidden RETURNs. Read on...
    Deleting Hidden RETURNs>
You can't see them, and I couldn't find a "show invisibles" option in Numbers. So you need to search and find them. Yet, how do you search for something hidden? Do the Command-F thing to bring up the search field. The search bar should automatically be ready to search what you type. Hitting the Return key will do nothing for you, but hitting Shift-Option-Return will (you'll likely need to hit Return again to actually perform the search). Numbers will point out how many times these hidden returns are in your spreadsheet, which cells contain them, and give you the option to automatically replace them with something else (a space is a safe option). You can do the same search and replace with commas too.
Save your spreadsheet, export it as CSV, and -- as long as the only errors stemmed from commas and hidden RETURNs -- you shouldn't have a problem having Address Book import it. Good luck!
PS- After importing my spreadsheet, I noticed that some of my Smart Groups in Address Book were not showing some people who should have automatically been in there. The problem was that the Smart Group search had straight apostrophes in it, but the imported contact had curved apostrophes. The computer saw these as two unrelated characters. After some copying and pasting, the problem was solved.

  • How to move Mail and Address book content from 10.3 emac to 10.5 iMac

How do I move Mail and Address book content from my old 10.3 emac to my new 10.5 Leopard iMac directly, or do I have to move the names etc, one by one?
    Richard

I cannot find a migration assistant. I have copied the Mail and Address Book applications over from 10.3 to 10.5 and tried using mailboxes import, but 10.5 Mail will not accept any of the options. The same for address book. Can you give more specific instructions?
The applications, Mail and Address Book, don't actually store your data in the application. So, moving the applications over to your new computer will have no useful effect and could be detrimental if you replaced the newer versions with the old.
Migration Assistant is in you Utilities folder and should have asked to be run during the installation.
Your Mail data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Mail. The Address Book data is stored in yourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. If your new installation is blank with no data, you can actually replace those directories on the 10.5 version with the old. For Mail, you also have to get the com.apple.mail.plist file from your old username/Library/Preferences/ folder and put it in the new 10.5 folder of the same name. Once that is done, when you open Mail and Address Book, they will update the data to the new format.
Migration Assistant will do all of this for you.
EDIT: Based on roam's comments, you may have to move the Mail manually. You can also just bring the Mail directory over to the 10.5 machine and use Mail's Import command to get all the mail out of the old Mail directory.

  • How do you change your ical import from entourage settings

    Hello all,
I am new to ical and am trying to import someone else's entourage agenda.  I believe I may have pointed to the incorrect file, and am now unable to find a way to redirect the import.  When I select import from entourage, it automatically executes my original setting.
Can you please let me know how to redirect the import, and it would also be helpful if you could tell me exactly what file I need to point to on my coworkers machine for the import.
    Thanks for the assistance.

    Hi Troy,
The best thing to do at this point is to contact iTunes Support:
    https://expresslane.apple.com/Issues.action
Click on "Account Management" and then on "Forgotten Security Questions". That will take you to a page where you can talk to iTunes Support right away, or you can schedule a call to talk to them. They should be able to get you squared away so that you can log on to the old Apple ID.
Once you get back into the old Apple ID, change the password to match the password on the new Apple ID. Also, probably a good idea to set up the 2-step Password Security - easier to recover a forgotten password that way.
I think you should be able to just update the password even though the Apple ID and email address are no longer valid. Since your son will only be using it to update apps, that should be OK.
Post back if you have any questions or run into any other issues! Good luck!
    Cheers,

  • Lost Mail and Address Book ikons from HD

Preparing to upgrade to Tiger OX 10 from Panther. Recommended backup all vital info. In transfer process, both Mail and Address Book ikons from HD to backup Superdisk repeatedly came up Error 50. Only success was to lose both ikons from HD and Question Mark on Address Book in dock rendering it useless. Now have Mail and a Mail copy ikon on Desktop that will not open. Likewise an Address Book ikon and four copies on Desktop that will not open. Fortunate that Mail ikon in Dock still operates allowing acess to Mail and Address Book on Mail site.
Would like to move forward. Help for an average computer user would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delayed response to your e-mail. Thank you very much for taking the time to addressing my problem.
After posting the question the hard drive further deteriorated to the point where the computer became inoperative. Ended up with a new computer and a major challenge in transferring info from old to new computer. After a long day with two friends and computer programmers by day, we succeeded in retrieving and transferring the info. Whee!
Thanks again for taking the time to address my question.
