Address book in alphabet order

Hi
Is it possible to put names and addresses in their groups in alphabet order?
Ta George

Not certain I understand you, but try this:
1. Open AddressBook
2. Go to "Preferences" and the "General" tab
3. From the "sort by" drop down, select "Last Name".

  • Mail's Add to Address Book inverts name order in Address Book

Using Mail's 'Add to Address Book' function results in inverted first/last name order in Address Book: Under every combination of setting for 'show first name before/following last name' and 'sort by first/last name' in the AB prefs, using Mail's Add to Address Book on 'Bob Jones' results in 'Jones' in the first name field and 'Bob' in the last name field.
Are others also seeing this? Any workarounds?

Thanks for testing, Ernie. I double-checked my system using your settings and still saw the names in the wrong fields. Something must be off with my setup but I have no idea what it might be! If anyone can replicate this problem, maybe we can figure it out.

  • Address Book contacts alphabetized by first name on ipod

Using iTunes 7.6, I have synced my contacts from Address Book onto my ipod Nano (2nd generation.) They appear on the ipod, but using first name to sort (alphabetize). Very inconvenient! In Address Book I have Preferences set to sort by last name, although also set to have first name listed first. Why would it change when syncing to my ipod and how can I fix? Thanks in advance for help. I have searched discussions and Apple Support.

Ha...as far as I can tell, the AB will not sort. Please post here if you find out otherwise!
Also: can it "Look for Duplicate Entries" across selected groups? It doesn't seem like it!

  • Address book - addresses will not stay in alphabetical order.

I set the address book in alphabetical order from View/ etc .
When I type a name into a new email, or when I re-open the address book, the addresses are no longer in alphabetical order

"are no longer" - since when?
Some users are commenting that the addresses offered by auto-completion are now (since TB31) in an unexpected order, possibly because its search/filter criteria have changed. It used to look only at the start of names and addresses and now, I believe, looks for any substring, thus yielding a different ordering.
Over and above that, if Thunderbird isn't remembering settings between sessions, then I have to ask if you're using any tools such as CCleaner, which have a nasty habit of deleting Thunderbird configuration files. If so, set them to omit Thunderbird's profile

  • Is it possible to change the email "To" field from what's in Address Book?

I would like to change the name displayed in the "to" address from the way it's entered in the address book but can't find how to do this. I like to have the address book sort alphabetically by last name (so it's set up with last name first), but I don't always want to send an email in that format. For example, I'd like to change "Smith Family" (address book) or "Smith John" (address book) to "John Smith" when I'm sending an email, or even just the email address (without a display). I could do this in Outlook, but I can't find the same feature in Mac Mail. Even when I delete the display name and try to retype just the email address it just "bounces back" to whatever the name is in the address book. I hate to have to make multiple entries in the address book for the same family/email address just to get different display names. Is there a way around this??

I'm sorry, but I'm still not clear on the problem. Do you mean that you have both "Smith Family" and "John Smith" tied to the same email address? If so, again, that "friendly" name isn't sent to the recipient, so the person receiving the email will get exactly the same thing regardless of whether you select the "Smith Family" entry or the "John Smith" entry. The "friendly" name doesn't go along as part of the email.
It would only matter on your end when looking at your Sent email, and if that's an issue, it should be no problem to select which one you want; just start entering in the email address/name and wait a second; you'll get a dropdown with all the addresses that meet that criteria and you can just pick the correct one.
Forgive me if I'm still not understanding what the difficult is or what you're trying to accomplish.

  • How can I sort all my books into title order?

    Hi
I'm familiar with how to search for book titles but it would be helpful if I could list all my books in alphabetical order.  Does anyone know how to do this please?
    Many thanks

  • How do I sort books in series order?

I have several books by the same author (20+).
These are in three series (and sub series)
The library sorts by AUTHOR just fine, but then puts the books in ALPHABETICAL order.
The SERIES order in not ALPHABETICAL.
The last (latest) book starts with "A", but the first one starts with an "O"
Is there a way to change this?
Can I change the file name and add a NUMBER in front of the name to force a sort?
    Thank you in advance.

I asked the same question a couple of months ago ("niceto have...") - no reply
The best I came up with was sortingby publication date - at least that gets them in the right order if not in series / sequence order.
The alternative is a pain - down load them in series order then sort by download date.

  • What happened to the tabs in the address book

I recall a lot of debate on the appearance of the Address Book.  Most of that for me was comestic.  I realize to many it is an issue important to them.  But one feature that for me is functionally important is the tabs.  If I recall SL Address book had Alphabetic tab on the 'pagee' so I could flip th 'book' quickly to the section which is sorted unter tha letter.  So if I want a doctor name Fisher, I click on F.  If I want a friend named Johnson, I click on J, etc.  Now, to find an entry I need to *type* in their last name (or first if I sort by that and scroll from there.  I've checked all the preferences and I have found none to turn that on.
Does anyone know if anything like that feature still exists has the designed it for Kindergarden level taken that away as well.
    Thanks,
    Bruce

I would like to have a LONG conversation with some of these Engineers who *decide* these things.  I'm glad you mentioned iOS device appearance.  The iOS Address book HAS the equivalent of TABS in the alphabeta running down the right side of the display.  It is less accurage with a touch interfface but it does get me approximatelly there reasonably fast.  I mentioned this inconsistency with the iOS appearance in my bug report.
Some of these guys need to get appearance (has nice and 'clean' and 'uncluttered' the interface is versus what functionality and usefulness is removed to do it.
    Thanks.

  • Address book in my profile

Once again BT seems to have screwed up the system. Every time I log in and go to MY PROFILE, ADDRESS BOOK and try to input a new contact ans say SAVE it immediately logs me out. When I log back in and check if it has saved it the new contact does not exist. Trying again has the saame result. I have tried at least a dozen times with the same result.
I have had nothing but trouble since BT changed its system. A very poor service. Bt told us the changes were to be an improvement not a retrograde step.

I have tried all sorts of things in order to resolve the issues with the Address Book in My Profile. I cannot for the life of me consider that this is a Browser problem. It would appear to me that this is a poor piece of software element of the web site in that its reliability is extremely erratic and might work or not work at any point in time regardless of what Browser is used and I have tried them all. The result of trying to access it results in a variety of different errors including logging one out and bringing up the log in page.
This is a very frustrating tool available to BT customers in being able to control ones billing facilities. For all the problems experienced it may as well not be there and I am of the view that BT treats this as of no importance to itself and do not understand that there are customers who view this facility as an important and essential tool in the control of their billing.
All too often calls appear on the bill which have not been made by the customer?? Without the address book in working order one cannot identify ones billing without being a PI.
The issue has been ongoing for several years with little or no resolution or comment from BT. Shameful!!!

  • Address book mixing data

What is the problem with Apple's Address book mixing contact phone, addresses, notes, names and loosing complete entries? I have had this problem since I started using the Mac. Is there a solution other than using another contact manager??

Upon further exploration, I'm not sure that there is rhyme nor reason to the sort order of the labels. I played with it a bit and it can't readily figure out how it sorts them. All I know is that Address Book changes the order that I originally input, and would prefer if it retained that order.

  • How can I get my thunderbird address book to show up in alphabetical order by surname?

When entering my email addresses in the address book they do not show up in alphabetical order by surname. What do I do to get it to do so?

I have this same problem, but my Address Book doesn't stay sorted. I have to sort it on "Email" address first, then sort it on "Email". Then, and only then, can I find an email address. I have to do this EVERY time I send an email. After I return to Thunderbird, the email addresses are jumbled again.

  • Multi language alphabetical order in Address Book.

I use Greek and English names on my address book/contacts. I use English menus, but Address Book will move all my Greek contacts under the #.
I tried that in my iPhone too. If i choose Greek menu, Address Book will sort alphabetically all names with 2 alphabets, the English and the Greek.
If i choose the English menu Address Book will only sort alphabetically my English contacts, while the Greek ones will be moved under #.
I want to use English menus on my devices for forum supporting purposes. Can that be fixed ?

The names are in alphabetical order - you can select in the preferences between ordering on first name or last name. You can't have them sorted by email address.

  • Address book entries in different language / alphabets

as a foreigner living in Greece I find it useful to have local names addresses written in greek characters. I have entered names in Latin characters and phonetic option in Greek, later the opposite. Some entries appear in alphabetical order, others after Z under # which mess up the 'search'. Does anyone have a solution?

    Hello:
If you can post a screen shot of what you describe (my address book does not look anything like what you describe) someone might be able to answer your question.

probably not a direct answer to your question but you might want to take a look at "Snail Mail" - it gives you a lot of additional options and features for printing envelopes from the Address Book:
