Address Book in Lion Server....Read Only

Hi,
Is there a way on how to making the addressbook server read only (meaning can't be edited)?
Last year, I setup a Lion Server for a company that will serve as an Addressbook server for them and at the same time
configuring their devices via Profile manager. Problem is every now and then, clients unintentionally sometimes adding address or deleting
some of the address (phone numbers) in that addressbook resulting to frequent remake of the companies shared addressbook.
Here is my desired setup:
An addressbook that only the admin can made a change (add/delete contacts).
Im looking into LDAP as a addressbook but Im not familiar with it.
Thanks in advance...

Did anybody answer back to you yet about how to setup READ/CREATE/EDIT/DELETE rights on the Address Book Server ! We have had poeple in our company ereasing entries on shared address books so many times that we are thinking about switching back to windows.... I mean come on people at apple, these where the basics back in the days of DBase, how can they be missing today... I have trouble comprehending this way of thinking!
I found this site on the net wich looks somewhat what I am looking for, but this seems to influence the whole server, I need this on address book level though:

  • Restore a user's Address Book on Lion Server with TimeMachine available

Has anybody found the solution to restore a single user's Address Book on Lion Server with TimeMachine available

I recently needed to restore an older version (by a few hours) of my AddressBook DB (on Lion Client) and Time Machine simply kept crashing!  Finally, what I had to do to get it going was to quit AddressBook, delete the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook, and then open that folder within Time Machine (via Finder), so as to only restore (an older version of) the "MetaData" folder within (and nothing else).
    Hope this helps.

  • Address book in Lion

I have not yet updated to LION for a number of reasons - basically because I am very pleased with Snow Leopard; and I want to wait until lots of the bugs are fixed in Lion (not that there are a lot, but you know what I mean…)  OK but now I read somewhere that ADDRESS BOOK in Lion is much different than in Snow Leopard.  Can someone comment on that?  I need Address Book to work smoothly - and while some current features (like printing) are not especially good in Address Book - I am reading that the basic way Address Book works in Lion is different and that it is not like Address Book in Snow Leopard…
Thanks for any comments or guidance.
    Best regards,

Its only the UI thats different.
Also, you should know that all the bugs have been cleared out (basically)

  • Printing multiple envelopes from address book with Lion

I am having trouble getting envelopes to print properly from Address Book in Lion.  I have specified size #10 envelopes.  When I print them, the text printed on successive envelopes moves further and further down the page until the address drops off of one envelope and is then printed at the top of the next envelope.  If I print to PDF, I see the same behavior.  I have an HP Photosmart Premium printer.  I didn't have this problem before I upgraded to Lion, and all my settings are the same as they were prior to the upgrade.  I have seen that other users have the same problem on the forums, but there isn't a clear cut answer to how to solve the problem anywhere.  I also tried using the easy envelopes widget, and I still have the creeping further down the envelope problem.  HELP!!!

It seems to be a bug in Lion. Try the solutions provided in other disucssions about changing print size and orientation. Create a custom size and save it. You should be able to test it by printing to pdf first to check it. That way you won't have to waste paper.

I doubt it but who knows. Maybe you can look for an alternative to buy from the App Store.

  • Look of the address book in lion?

Is there a way to change the look of the address book in lion?  I can not stand the fact that I updated becouse my old computer died, and now I have to try to like Lion.  Who whats a leather address book?  If  I want that I will go back to PC.  I looked up all the settings I thought It could be, and can not seem to find any settings for it.

There's no setting in Lion to change this look.
If you are willing to hack around a bit, you could try one of these:

  • Address book in Lion tries to send updates to wrong URL in carddav server

As the title says. We have lion with address book. Out of the box.
We have a caldav carddav server that has been used with older macs no problem, and iphones work perfectly also with the server.
    This is the problem.
The account is set up on the address book app, and the initial connection works perfectly.
After adding username, password and server address, the address book application finds the correct contacts at the following URL:
    /principles/users/[email protected]
You can see this url if you go to the preferences/accounts. You cant edit the URL, which is strange, as you can in iCal (ical works perfectly BTW)
Initial read from the server is fine.
If we change a contact on the server, then click on the address book application, you see the spinner for a second, and the new changes can be seen.
If you make a change on the address book, the changes are NOT reflected on the carddav server.
Both Macbook and server on on same LAN
    Server ip address is 10.200.200.51
    The port is 8008
The principle URL is /principals/users/[email protected] (which is shown in the address book app as correct)
However, when the address book is changed, and it tries to update the server we see the following on the macbook logs as it is trying to update the server:
You will notice it looks like the address book is trying to connect to a folder that does not exist on the server.

What is interesting is that ical works perfectly (in both directions)
Im not sure if the '%40' in the address book app for the '@' symbol is an issue??
The server path url in address book is not editable as it does not sit in a editable field, unlike it is in ical.
Either way, both the ical and address book find the principle URL correctly, but the address book app then uses a different url when it tries to connect to upload changes made on the address book app.
Any help would be really appreciated!! :-) Maybe there is a way to change the URL in a settings file somewhere???
    thanks

I have a similar issue. My initial iCloud sync works fine and then when I try to merge a contact I get an error. My iCloud doesn't sync after the initial sync it seems.

  • Address book dupes - Lion client / SL Server / iCloud

I've been having huge trouble with Address Book duplicates ever since attempting to sync over iCloud.
I suspect the problem has to do with Lion clients connecting to a Snow Leopard OS X Server. My collection of devices includes 2 iPhones, 1 Lion iMac running stand-alone, and 2 Lion iMac's connecting to Snow Leopard Server. The client machines aren't using the Server's address book implementation, but have the users home directory located on the server.
I can get things going so that the 2 iPhones, the standalone iMac, and the Cloud all report the same number of contacts, with no duplicates. This config will remain stable indefinitely (have tested 2 days). But the moment I try to include in the sync one of my office iMacs configured for user home directories on the Snow Leopard Server, the duplicates appear...just minutes later. Then, of course, they propagate and every device shows the dupes, sometimes 2, 3 or 4 times. Probably more would occur, but I pull the plug.
Does anyone else share a similar setup? Success? Trouble?

Thanks to jamesk8752's link...I fixed it!!! :-) That link he posted brought me to the fix. I wrote it out easier to follow. I want to mention that when I upgraded to Mountain Lion the issue continued. This fix did the trick
    1. Make a Backup Archive of your AddressBook.app (or Contacts.app)
    2. Shut off iCloud Syncing (choose the option to delete the contacts).
    3. Now with NO contacts in AddressBook (Contacts) quit the application.
    4. Click on "go" and choose "go to folder" & navigate to [username]/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (even in Mountain Lion this is still accurate)
    5. DELETE the addressbook-v22.abcddb file. Empty trash (just because I have OCD).
    6. Reopen AddressBook/Contacts & create a new address card. You should now be able to edit it! Then delete it.
    7. Go back into System Prefrences and turn on iCloud Contacts.
Your iCloud contacts will then appear and you'll be able to edit, delete, add, etc! Everything will be right as rain!

  • Mountain Lion FTP server read only issue

Can anyone help me figure out why my users have read only access via FTP.
    1. I created networked users and groups
    2. shared some folders
    3. activated ftp on one of those shares
First issue was users could access that share via AFP but could not connect via FTP?
Finally I figured out that each user had to have a login shell of /bin/bash.
Aslo had to let each networled user to be bale to log in?
then if i log in with an ftp client it works i can write files but if i log in via finder (apple K) connect to server ftp://server.local i can only get read access and not RW?
I think this may have something to do with passive and active mode but can anyone help?
Why is it so hard to set up?
    Thanks

Just so you know the update is, apparently apple has not allowed wright access via ftp thorugh the finder since before 10.2.
So i guess its just one of thos things that apple got rid of.
Sorry unless you use a workaround like. http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/
    Good luck

  • Can I re-install only address book in Lion?

When I type in a name in the search field it no longer responds. If I double click on a vcf card from an email it will not add the contact. I can still scroll through the contacts but if a contact is highlighted in the list it will not appear in the preview pane on the right. If double clicked it will open in a separate window.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

  • Address Book and iCal Server backups

I'm working to implement a company-wide Address Book, iCal, and iChat server via Lion Server where I work, and I've gotten most of the setup figured out (I think), and am approaching the point where I can roll it out to a few users for further testing.  However, before I'm allowed to move forward any further w/ it I have to have two means of backing up in place and ready to be rolled out at the same time as the server—so I'm planning on using Time Machine as one so it does the entirety of the server and its data/settings, but they also want me to do one of the Address Book Server and iCal Server databases individually, like back up the folder the data is, so we can, if ever necessary, import the backup databases to another computer, so we at least have the content, if not the full server functionality.  And, for obvious reasons, it can't be backed up locally.
So I'm looking for a means of doing this and would love any input anyone has.  Ease of use/setup is pretty important as this is my first time setting Server up and I've no programming knowledge.  I'm fairly sure I'll be able to find (or write my own, though that's unlikely) or modify and AppleScript that simply copies/duplicates a Finder item, and I know I can have iCal automatically run a script (so I'd just have it run every night at midnight or something), but I have yet to figure out how to get the script to copy the folder to a specified location on a different server (or, for that matter, if it's even possible, though I'm sure it is...right?).  But that's not what I'm trying to ask here...though I certainly wouldn't mind if someone had thoughts on it and wanted to share them !  I just really would like to know which folders to back up, since it's not simply making an archive of the local Address Book.app database.
And, since I'm already here writing a post, I'll ask one other question that's been nagging at me: in Server Admin.app, with the server (not the services) selected in the sidebar on the left, the Access pane selected in the primary Server Admin window, and Services selected, and trying to dictate which users/groups can access which services, the user can click the "+" in the lower-left corner of the window where added users would appear, and another window pops up next to the Server Admin window that shows a list of the users (and groups if you click the appropriate button).  My question is, why does it show me _krb_anonymous, _krb_changepw, and a total of 81 other items?  I understand more or less what they are (in a very general sense), but why are they shown as users?  More importantly, do they have to be listed there?  Technically I'm probably the only one that's going to be the administrator, and I'll know not to add them or modify them, but I don't want anything related to those items appearing in a directory search in Address Book when I get it set up (as they are showing up now; for instance, one user I created is Sandy, and I have it set to include directory contacts in searches, so on a client machine that is correctly communicating w/ the server (add a user, it appears in a minute on another client machine, and vice versa) if I go to search for that name as soon as I type "s" Sandy, the actual user shows up, but so do five or six other things, all of which are items from the aforementioned list in Server Admin (pretty much anything that has an "s" in it, which of course makes sense)—and that's what I don't want, I don't want the users to search for someone, see something like _krb_anonymous pop up, then think something is screwed up and call me and demand I come fix their computer!).
Any thoughts, suggestions, and such are more than welcome and much appreciated!
    Thank you to all...

  • Address book in Lion not working

I use Address Book on both my computers and on my iPad. With iCloud, everything's synced. Until about a month ago. On my iMac, Address Book is not working :
    It is empty.
I cannot import any archived file.
I cannot connect to iCloud. It won't add the account
I cannot create a new entry. File > New card does nothing
Here is what I tried :
    Reboot
    Check and repair permissions
    Reinstalled Lion
    No change.
But wheh I start whith another account, it works...
    Any clues?

Among many other issues with Lion, I am having this one as well.  As with a few applications, it is only occuring with users authenticating to open directory.  Local users are not having the issue.  Address Book will not save imported information.  We imported several vCard files to it and after quiting and reopening, the information is not there.

  • Can't edit contacts in address book under Lion

Instead of the "Edit" and "Share" buttons that normally appear at the bottom of my listed contacts, I only have "Add Contact" and "Share."  What gives?  Why can't I edit any of my contacts?

Hey - I just found a post on another thread which cured my problem (same as yours).  Here are the details.
If you just upgraded to Lion, you get 90 days of complimentary support, so don't be bashful.  Call 'em.  I called Apple support and they resolved this specific issue.  We first verified that a newly created Admin account could create and edit Address Book.  When it did, we rightly assumed corruption in the Address Book Library files.
Here are the steps from that point.
Back up your Address Book: From Address Book, choose File > Export and choose Export vCard to a desitnation of your choosing.
    Close Address Book.
From the Desktop, Hold Option and click Go in the menu at the top of the screen.
Choose Library.  If this is not an option, you are not pressing the Option key or you are not an Admin.
Expand the Application Support folder and drag the AddressBook folder to the Trash.  Close window.
Open Address Book and import your address book vCard.
PS: mine was nothing to do with permissions. . . .
