Address book ldap problems

Hi. My organization uses a domain controller server on port 3268 for ldap/GAL access. In the past I have had intermitant problems accessing the GAL through address book and the mail app. The last time this happened I trashed some pref files and got it working again. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, it is not working again. I've tried trashing various plist files, but none have seemed to help. I've been doing this over the last few weeks so I can't specifically list which plist files I've tried.
If anyone has a solution or any suggestions I would appreciate it. If there is a way to see at what level it is failing that would be helpful too. It does not show up in the Mail activity window.
Thanks

  • Address Book LDAP Integration

I'm trying to use a central LDAP server (openLDAP) for all the machines in my house. My problem is in the mapping of AB entries and the corresponding LDAP attributes.
It recognizes "telephoneNumber" in LDAP as "Work Phone" in Address Book. Also, "mobile" as "Mobile phone". But not "homePhone" as "Home Phone".
It does recognize "homePhone" on an LDIF import and populates the Home Phone in Address Book, so it does recognize the right thing to do in that case. (well, that's subjective)
There appears to be a mapping file within openLDAP. In /etc/openldap/schema/netinfo.schema I notice entries like:
    attributemap /users lastname sn
    attributemap /users firstname givenName
    attributemap /users state stateOrProvinceName
    attributemap /users zip postalCode
    attributemap /users phonenumber telephoneNumber
    <Wild Assumption>
So, I was thinking this maps Netinfo -> LDAP attributes. And defaults to some set of attributes where it doesn't provide a mapping. So mobile->Mobile is assumed, but phonenumber needs to be mapped to telephoneNumber and so it's provided here.
So my thinking is that if I can find the right Netinfo attribute to home phone number, I can provide the mapping in this file and problem solved...
    </Wild Assumption>
Of course, that may have nothing to do with it at all.
    Any info would be appreciated.

replying to my own post! sweet!
K, my wild assumption was way off. the AB sarches LDAP for these attributes.
    givenName
    sn
    cn
    mail
    telephoneNumber
    facsimileTelephoneNumber
    o
    title
    ou
    buildingName
    street
    l
    st
    postalCode
    c
    jpegPhoto
    mobile
    co
    pager
    destinationIndicator
    labeledURI
    IMHandle
So unless I can modify the ldapsearch query and/or modify how it maps those attributes to AB entries... I'm SOL. I've found nothing that will allow for a simple config change to make this happen, but there are some 3rd party stuff that might work. www.j2anywhere.com
But, I'm a bit of a purist (read: cheapskate) so I'm not willing to settle just yet.

  • Address book sync problem

I had uploaded my IMAC address book to my new itouch.  But because of some problems in the address book (lots of quotes around # and email), I had to fix that (using Excel's trim and clean functions.  On the IMAC, I deleted all the contacts in the address book and then uploaded the contacts from the cleaned and trimmed address book fields.  It loaded fine.
But when I tried a sync, it actually goes to what appears another account (my wife's) and loads that.  I can't seem to get to to sync to my new address book.  How do I force a sync?
    John

On October 18, 2007—with less than 24 hours notice for most users—Apple announced that .Mac synchronization services would change substantially to accommodate Panther users. Here is the text of that notice, which many users apparently did not receive:
    "Dear .Mac member:
Due to improvements being made to .Mac Sync on October 19, 2007, please note the following changes.
Mac OS X version 10.4 Tiger users:
To ensure uninterrupted service, you must be using Mac OS X version 10.4.10. To check which version you’re running, select About This Mac in the Apple menu. If you are not running version 10.4.10, click the Software Update button and install the update to 10.4.10.
Mac OS X version 10.3 Panther users:
To accommodate new enhancements, .Mac Sync will no longer support syncing of calendars between a Panther-based Mac and a Mac running Tiger or Leopard. Syncing calendars between Mac computers running Panther is unaffected.
These changes will help enable .Mac Sync to do more than ever. Thank you for your patience, and thank you for being a .Mac member.
That was ten days ago, and .Mac synchronization services are still undergoing 'maintenance.' There is not announced date by which stable, familiar service will be restored.
You can check the main page of .Mac to determine when the amber LED labeled Sync returns to green, or survey the this forum for information about service restoration. You'll see a previously updated status note at the top of the forum change when service is restored.

  • Address Book Sync Problems - 8530 and Outlook 2007

This has been a nagging problem for me for quite some time.  Here's my current status:
    Curve 8530 on Verizon Wireless
Access to Corporate resources and email via BES
I also access Gmail from the device
Right now I am not synching over the air - that has never worked.  I'm using Desktop Manager, and recently downgraded to Version 5.01.  When I connect the device and configure for Address Book sync the application starts the process, then craps out without synching.  I've rebooted the PC, reloaded the application without success.
And right now the device's address book is blank.  Any ideas?

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
Given that you are on BES, why in the world are you putting up with it's non-functionality? With BES, you should be receiving Over the Air (OTA) sync of email, contacts, calendar, tasks, etc...no need whatsoever to synchronize to Outlook via USB tether. If that is not working, then you should do one of two things:
    1) Talk to your BES admins and have them get it working properly for you...you are missing a lot!!!
    -- OR --
    2) Talk to your carrier about changing your data plan and dropping BES -- you are paying extra for a service that you cannot even use!!
Once you decide which path you wish to pursue, let us know.
    Good luck!

  • Address book sync problem: Phone #s & emails missing fr. iPhone

When I sync, I overwrite the iPhone address book and calendar with the one on my computer. I choose 'Replace information on this iPhone.'
Suddenly, none of the emails or phone numbers are showing up in the address book records on the iPhone. All the records are there, they're just missing the phone #s and emails. The phone numbers and emails are on the computer version of Address book, and other changes in the name and notes fields for each record are showing up.
Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

I'm not sure what you mean. When I look in the Address Book, I see the email addresses for each of my contacts, but the problem is they aren't syncing to my iPhone. Do you know how I can resolve this???

  • Repopulating itunes, address book, network problems, recovered data - help

    Hi
    This is a multi-topic question:
I had a dying HD. Used Install DVD/Disc Utilities to repair, then upgraded to Snow Leopard right after. When I rebooted, everything was gone. I had a new start-up disk/username account and no sign of the previous Home/Username. I used Disk Warrior and recovered all my files (I think). Moving things back in place is a challenge. Many problems.
    1. How do I move all my iTunes music back to the current Username?
    2. Where do I find the Address Book Data and how do I move that back the the current username?
    3. I cannot connect to the internet. Network diagnostics says "Internet failed, server failed" both wirelessly via Airport and when I connect via ethernet. My other Macs have no problems with the internet so it is something internal with this Mac.
    Any suggestions welcome

They said that MobileMe has a problem working with iTunes backup.
MobileMe has nothing to do with the iPhone's backup. Contacts are included with your iPhone's backup, which is updated by iTunes as the first step with the iTunes sync process, but this is used when restoring an iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup only. This has nothing to do with syncing contacts direct with a supported application on your computer or over the air with a MobileMe or Exchange account.
Time Machine only keeps one backup and so once it backs up your copy of your address book, you're screwed.
    Baloney. Time Machine keeps:
Hourly backups for the last 24 hours.
Daily backups for the past month.
Weekly backups for all previous months.
You can go back in time to where your Address Book contacts are available with your Time Machine backup and restore from that.
Besides my Time Machine backup, I also use the MobileMe backup app to automatically backup my Address Book and iCal data on a weekly basis, and before I make any significant changes to my Address Book contacts - adding, deleting, or editing, I manually backup my Address Book data - at the menu bar go to File > Export > Address Book Archive. I have 3 backups for this data since the data is very important to me.
If your contacts are no longer available with your MobileMe online address book and no longer available with the Address Book on your Mac, with the Address Book launched, go back in time with Time Machine where your contacts in the Address Book were last available and select Restore. Done.

  • Previous Recipient Address Book integration problem

does anyone know how to add a "Previous Recipient" beyond simply seleccting the contact and checking the box to add?
for instance, how and when does this sync take place? i have closed out of each of these softwares after adding a contact and i am not seeing the sync take place.
also if i have a contact in Mail's Previous Recipients (which has an email address) and I have the same contact in my Address Book (which has a phone number) is there a good way to get these two to MERGE instead of creating two contacts?
    TIA

    > You will see the Previous Recipients list and AB list in Mail will change to First-Last name view.
You are referring here to getting the SORT ORDER to change? I mean, you are indicating that if I change preferences for sort order - well - it did not appear to change anything in an /existing/ linked contact from Mail but you are saying that i need to close and restart AB to get the new sort to take effect before relinking more contacts from Mail...?
Not sort order, view order of First Name before Last. In order for the Previous Recipients list to change in Mail, you need to quit Mail (not AB) and reopen it. It will then change the list view to First-Last name view. Sort order remains sorted by Last name. If you want the sort order by first name, you can do that too.
    > In a message window, most email addresses show first name & then last name. If you are viewing last name first, then it gets put backward in AB and won't match an existing contact. I have tried it an got the name added to show the correct order in AB.
OK, but i am doing something wrong here then because all my combinations cause imported Mail contacts to show up as Last Name - First Name when i have sorted by First Name - Last Name and vice versa if I changed settings in AB preferences...
Change the view order to First-Last name in AB (not sort order). If you are importing contacts from a different source, then I guess that would depend on how it's information is saved. If you are importing from mail messages ((note that I'm referring to how incoming messages are recieved), then the view order (First-Last) is what usually gets sent from people when a name is tagged to it. When adding an address from a mail message, Mail recognizes the name in the header field as First-Last and that's how they get saved to AB. If your view in AB is Last-First displayed, then it gets put in backwards.
As I said, set the viewing order in AB to First Name before last name. Quit Mail and reopen Mail. Your previous recipient list in Mail should change to show First-Last name. Sort order will depend on setting in AB.
    > Names must be the same for it to recognize as a duplicate.
OK, presumably this also includes capitalizations? Anyway, i am doing something wrong because i don't get the first and last order sorted correctly under anything i am doing.
I'm not sure about capatilization, but "Tom Test" does not equal "Thomas Test", or "Tom Test" does not equal "Test Tom".
    > If the name already exists in AB, the drop down list in a messages address window will change to "add to contact" (where it will just add that address to the contact).
OK, so you are referring here to an option to add a contact (i guess we are only adding the email in this case if the contact is already in AB...?) when doing an entry in a Mail Message - which is different from ADDING CONTACT from the Previous Recipients list?
Yes. If the contact exists and let's say you recieve a message from them using a different email address, you will have the option in the dropdown to add the address to the existing contact instead of creating a new one.
The previous recipients list is a database file and I don't believe you can directly import from it. It isn't stored as VCards like the AB data is.
Only thing I can suggest is to play with it and see if you can get it to work for you. Getting it to import the name order to match correctly in AB would be a big step to resolving duplicates. Even if the names don't match exactly and they don't get merged, it would be much easier to spot in a list where the names are close together. If the Last name and First get reversed on the import, then the names will not show close in the list and will be hard to spot.
I think this is a problem trying to get addresses from different sources no matter which application you use.
I wish Mail has a setting to display names differently than AB. I like AB sorted and viewed by Last Name. But I would like my messages displayed in Mail headers as first name when sending or recieving. You don't have any control on addresses that aren't in the AB on how the name tags come in. But as I said, addresses not in AB will generally be displayed First-Last name (providing they have names tagged to it).
I haven't played with this much and things sometimes change with OS upgrades. I usually add a contact manually. If I add from a message, I usually imediately go to AB and fix the names then to make sure it's correct.
Play with it and I just hope it works out for you. Never said it would be easy or flawless.

  • Personal Address Book - LDAP CCM 5.0.4

I have the LDAP service running on Callmanager 5.0.4.,the Personal Address Book is request for the users, but i ?m trying to access http ccmuser, and the access is denied. Any idea?
    regards
    Cristian

    Hi,
I think I can help you...
Cisco had the good idea to create new feature in CCM 5 ==> Role and Group.
So the only think you need to do, is to go through the admin web page to the USER MANAGEMENT Tab, and then select "GROUP".
You'll see different group, and a specific one "Standard CCM user" or something like that.
Just click on it, and you can add now all your End-User to this group. And then all the user can access to the ccm user page with the USERNAME and PASSWORD field (not the pin).

  • Address Book Database Problem

I have a strange synchronization problem. I am using Missing Sync 6.0.2 and a Tungsten E2 on my Mac. If I modify an entry on my Palm, the entry is changed on my Mac. However, I can no longer search for the entry using the search field in address book. The updated entry is there if I scroll through the entire list of all entries. Spotlight can also find it, as can Launch Bar. I have read on these Apple support pages that there is an issue where the AddressBook-v22.abcddb file in user/Library/Application Supprt/Address Book apparently does not get properly updated with the new entry information. Some have suggested that tossing out this file and allowing Address Book to create a new one fixes this issue. However, it does not. Tossing this file (and getting a new one created) results in the OLD, unmodified entry replacing the recently altered one in address book. How is this possible? How can there be an old unaltered version after it was supposedly overwritten by a new entry in Missing Sync/Sync Services? I can do some Missing Sync tricks (delete the address book entries, reset Sync Services, synchronize) to get my Tungsten to overwrite the Mac and restore order. However, this is a reproducible problem and will recur the next time I modify an entry on my Palm. Any thoughts?

i've seen the same missing search problem with new entries, but i believe those show up after re-starting the address book.
another, similar issue, trying to get my treo 650 to sync with leopard. i've just started using missing sync but i've lost all the contacts on my palm.
the markspace support docs suggest resetting the address sync data by exporting the address book data, then import and replace the address book. here's the odd behavior: when i import the address book file, clicking to replace the current address book, all my addresses appear to be gone. i quit the address book. when i re-open the address book, the original entries are all there.
i'm not sure if this odd-ball behavior has anything to do with me not being able to get the contacts to sync correctly on the treo.
i was able to restore the treo contacts from a backup, but am still unable to get the treo contacts to update to the macbook (10.5.1)
will look forward to progress that anyone achieves.

  • Address Book Syncing Problems and Won't Restore

I sync address book between two computers using .mac, and also publish it for another family member to use. This was working fine under Tiger, but I've recently noticed some issues in Leopard. Occasionally, instead of merging records, it will double them up. This morning, I noticed I had twice as many contacts as I should. For some reason, it added my entire .mac address book again back to my computer. Other times it had done that with only a few of the contacts.
Fortunately, I had done an Archive my address book just the other day. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I went to restore from the Archive using "Import" and "Address Book Archive". It warned me it was about to replace my entire address book with the Archive, but then nothing happened. All my contacts disappeared, but then all of them came back again, still doubled. I know it was not doubled when I did the archive, so it didn't really restore my Archive.
I finally fixed my doubled contacts problem by doing a one way sync from my second computer (which had not yet been affected by this) to .mac and then a one way sync from .mac to my laptop. I then turned off .mac syncing.
Then, a little while later I had 20 more contacts! I realized that this came from the fact that the address book is published and the subscriber has editing rights. But she did not add them. It was again a doubling problem, this time in the sharing function. So I turned off editing in sharing.
All is back now but I won't turn .mac syncing or shared editing back on until I understand what happened.
    Anyone else see these issues?

leopard 10.5.1 on macbookpro. instructions to fix missing sync for my treo 650 including backing up (exporting) then restoring the address book. i also am unable to restore.
the backup archive shows 6 MB.
i click import, choose the archive, verify that i want to replace all. the address book then shows only the address that was highlighted before import, still shows 1152 cards, but no other cards are visible. verified the search box is empty.
if i quit and restart address book, the original version of the address book is still there. apparently unable to import address book.

  • Contact & Address Book - two problems

I have a Pearl and have two problems related to my address book:
Problem 1 - If I have a contact for two people, e.g. a married couple John and Jane, obviously they have separate cell numbers, but a common home phone number. How can I save these as one contact e.g. "John and Jane" but allocate their individual names to their numbers? The default in BB is to have Work 1/Work 2/Home 1/Home 2 etc. but how can I customise these to say John Cell/Jane Cell/ J&J Home etc?
Problem 2 - When I receive a call from John I would like my caller ID to say "John Cell" as per the above, not "John and Jane" as the main contact. Is this possible?
Driving me crazy, any assistance appreciated!
