Address Book Lookup behaving strangely

I am having a minor problem with my Address Book. Some but not all of the entries will not look up by first name. When I start typing a name, for example "John" to find John Smith, it can't find the contact. John Smith is in the address book, and it finds him if I type in "Smith". It would be one thing if it was not letting me look up any contacts by first name, but it is only doing it on about a third of them. I assumed that maybe there was something funny going on with the particular entries, but going in to edit the address book entries, I can find no difference between the ones that don't work and the ones that do. This is very odd.
A relevant factor may be that it only started doing this after I installed Google Sync on my phone and synced my address book with my Google Contacts.
Any ideas what might be causing this problem and/or how I can fix it? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks--T

Hi and welcome to the forums!
Go to contacts, options/ general options and make sure you have sort by: first/last name
whichever you would like.
Then do this, no data will be lost when doing the following: pull the battery while the device is ON. Replace after a minute, Let the device reboot 1-3 min, see if the problem is fixed.
Thanks,

  • Address Book lookup

I have a feature request for at least the nseries phones(but not only).
In case of an incoming call the phone match only the last 7 digits of the phone number from the Address Book. As a result it can show a wrong name association to the incoming CLI. If the phone can match up to 9 digits then it solves the problem.
    Thank you.

  • Global address book lookup

At one time, I could copy and paste a list of names into an email and Outlook would lookup each one in the global addressbook.  That function doesn't work well like it did before. Now, each name causes the "Check Names" pop-up to occur with
"No suggestions".  I must scroll up to find and select the correct address.  Most addresses match exactly so I'm not sure why these aren't found as valid and prompts me.
Is there some default setting that got messed up that would fix this if corrected?

    Hi,
The Auto-Complete List is a feature which displays suggestions for names and e-mail addresses as you begin to type them in Outlook. Please make sure the Auto-Complete List name suggestion is turned on in your Outlook:
    1.Click the File tab.
    2.Click Options.
    3.Click Mail.
4.Under Send messages, select the Use Auto-Complete List to suggest names when typing in the To, Cc and Bcc lines check box.
Please type part of the name or address and then press the Check Names button manually on the Toolbar or Ribbon or press its keyboard shortcut (for most localized versions this is CTRL+K) to check whether the “no suggestion” is still shown
or not. Please also check this in Outlook Online mode.

  • Exchange Sync Problem: Address Book fields are strange

    Hi All,
I started to use Mail and Address Box to sync to my company Exchange 2007 since I upgraded to SL. Everything worked fine except that the inbox of the mail can never show up. Anyway, I assumed everything else work just fine.
However, when I decided not to sync with Exchange anymore and use other services to sync my macbook and iphone, I discovered that there is a big bug in the exchange sync mechanism. All the details of the contact actually sync into arbitrary field names. They look similar and that's why I though it works just fine.
Now the fields look like this in my iphone and mobile me _$!<EX-BusinessPhone>!$_
    Can anyone help?

I have a similar question -- seems all the fields that iPhone does utilize are transferred -- but it is limited and apparently not customizable. For example .. if someone has an "other" email address it doesn't show up ... only work and home seem to show up.... would really like to be able to customize which fields I want to carry with me

  • Address book : provide contact list import/export from other software

There should be an easy way to import contact information from Gmail accounts, Hotmail, and so forth. They're providing efficient ways to export their database, so it shouldn't be too hard for developers to add this usual feature.
I would agree that the contact export/import procedures usually offered are not user-friendly. But it's not user-friendly either to recreate a contact list of 200+ contacts manually.
I hope this feature will be added in a near future. Thanks. Rodan

Thanks, I'll definitely use this bugreporter in the future.
Concerning this case, I've just found this feature is already implemented.
Address Book > File > Import
Strange I couldn't find any documentation about it online. Well, here it si now, I hope people will see it. Bug closed anyway. :-)

  • Getting Email Address from address book

    Hi,
I'm having some problems in GroupWise 6 which I'd appreciate some help
    with.
I'm trying to search an address book for an email address based on the
"from" name in a newly created email, where the address book name format
is "LastName, FirstName". I've tried a number of approaches, none of which
seems to work, as I shall describe below.
    1. I get the displayed name in the "from" textbox of the mail by executing
ItemGetText. Now, regardless of the address book name format, the name I
receive is in the format "FirstName LastName" (eg "Dave Smith"). When I
then execute AddressBookResolveFullName on this display name, I am
returned "Token Execution Failed" presumably because the address book
lookup is expecting a name in the format "Smith, Dave" (incidentally, the
same code works fine when the address book name format is set to
    "FirstName LastName").
    2. As an alternative approach, I get the current UserID by executing
EnvUserId. This gives me a UserId in a format such as
[email protected]. I then execute AddressBookGetFullName in the
expectation of being given the display name (hopefully in "LastName,
FirstName format"), which I could then use in executing
    AddressBookResolveFullName. However, AddressBookGetFullName also returns
"TokenExecutionFailed". This may be due to the format of the UserID I am
using not matching what is expected by AddressBookGetFullName. I'm not
entirely clear in my mind about the different formats that can be returned
by EnvUserId, nor how the fields in the UserID map onto the format
    expected by AddressBookResolveFullName.
So, Id greatly appreciated answers to the following questions:
    1. Why does AddressBookResolveFullName fail when I use the name as it
appears in the "from" text box?
    2. Why does the name in the "from" text box not match the name format
defined by the address book? After all, any name I enter in the "To" field
must be in the correct format.
    3. Is there any way of converting a name from "FirstName LastName" to
"LastName, FirstName" other than writing code to parse the name for a
comma and switching the names myself? To have to do this seems to me like
    asking for trouble.
    4. Can I use the UserID returned from EnvUserId when executing
    AddressBookGetFullName?
    5. Will the name returned by AddressBookGetFullName be in "LastName,
    FirstName" format?
    6. Or am I missing a much simpler solution to this problem?!
    Thanks in advance,
    Phil.

I'm sorry to say that I have never made this work and have always
recreated the email address. For some reason, getting the email address
out of GW requires hitting the directory, and not the GW database with
    any exposed API

  • New phone does everything but sync iCal and Address Book

I have Leopard on my MacBook Pro; my new iPhone works fine - except for sync of iCal and Address Book. iTunes behaves as if it is syncing; but then there is nothing on the phone.
I've scanned the other sync-related messages, and nothing suggested there has helped (restarting both devices; clearing the iSync cache; etc.). I called Apple, and a nice young man walked me through many possibilities, ultimately suggesting I archive & reinstall Leopard. (He assured me it was like starting from scratch, and I'd have to reinstall my apps; of course that is not the case.) I did that; it didn't help.
Sync does work with a new user I created; but I can't figure out how to get my iCal and Address Book files over there.
    Any suggestions appreciated!

Sorry, missed it in the previous post.
    Couple of more items.
Export all contacts from address book. vcards would work.
Delete all contacts from address book.
    Quit out of address book.
Open finder and go to your home directory/library/preferences.
Drag the com.apple.AddressBook.plist file to your desktop.
Open isync preferences and reset sync history.
Open address book back up and enter a test contact into address book.
Connect the iphone to the computer and try just syncing contacts replacing contacts on iphone.
If this works, import all your contacts back into address book and sync back to iphone.
    Hope this helps.

  • Address Book behaves very strange

    Hello members and outside viewers,
First thing: My Address Book behaves very strange.
    - After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
    - Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
    - Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
    - Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
Please can you help me! I deleted both plist files from Preferences folder and deleted the whole folder under Application Support/AddressBook, also reinstalled Address Book from Leopard DVD, but nothing helped so far.
Second thing: when I invoke Spotlight, and start typing after 2-3 seconds, it quits and also Dock unusable, restarts automatically. Spotlight is useless, it behaves every time like this. Spotlight in Finder windows are OK, system-wide menubar has this error. Also, it was suddenly gone wrong like Address Book. Can I think of some virus?
P.S. (off topic), might helpful to share: very frustating, that registering to Discussions took me over an hour.
    - With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
    - With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
    - After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
    - That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
    - Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
    - Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

  • Address Book entries have very strange appearance

Since updating to Leopard, my Address Book entries have a very strange appearance. When I copy and paste them the info is correct, but in the Address Book right-hand window the name (first and last) appears like gobbledigook, as if it was a strange font that is almost like mathematical equations
With my utmost thanks in advance (as ever) if anyone has the answer to this weird problem
    Kind Regards
    Bernard

Thanks a million for taking the trouble to respond Ashka.
I was only reminded of the problem when I opened a web page and saw a similar effect on a couple of lines as I had in my Address Book and having discovered your response, I followed your instructions and on scanning through my fonts, I also turned off "Helvetica Fractions" (as the gobbledigook looked as if it might be fractions). One of these actions seems to have done the trick.
Whilst looking for a particular font a while back, I ended up downloading absolutely hundreds, but it wasn't until I foolishly installed them all that I realised what a mistake I had made, as Word wouldn't even open, as it couldn't cope with the number of fonts. So I had to keep deleting fonts until Word was happy and even now, I still have far too many fonts. I kid myself that I like having so much to choose from, but truth is I am never going to use 90 per cent of them. Moreover, having discovered this problem, I wonder if there are any others in there that are going to cause me problems in the future?
Again, can't thank you enough for your trouble
    Best Regards
    Bernard

    Please?!

    Hi dp13.
Do you have any Address Book plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Address Book? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
    ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins ~/Library/Address\ Book\ Plug-Ins
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.
    <hr>
Did you also reinstall the appropriate Combo Update after reinstalling Address Book?
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • TB on new Windows 8.1 computer won't lookup names from address book

The computer came with Windows 8 and TB worked fine. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 Update, I had to reload the address book from an old Outlook Express system under Windows XP. Now the address lookup isn't happening when I create a new email.

I should add that I am trying to get the autofill function working but all that happens is that characters appear in red as I type in the email address until the complete address is typed.

  • Strange problem with nested address book groups

I have a strange problem with iSync. I have created a group On-the-Go in my Address Book that I'm syncing with my phone (Motorola v600). The group consists of three other groups. Let's call them A, B and C.
The problem is that only group C gets synchronized. Contacts from groups A and B disappear from the phone. Strangely, if I select A or B to sync in iSync - they get synchronized just fine. Also, group C, in turn, contains other nested groups, but that does not seem to be a problem.
I played with group names, tried to recreate group A to no avail.
For now, I have added all contacts from A and B to On-the-Go as a workaround, but
it looks like a bug to me.

  • Strange items in Address Book

I have a very strange situation, open Mail to do a new email, to address the email I type in Frank, nothing comes up, but yet I have 4 names with Frank in them. If I try the same thing addressing with Larry it shows all of the Larry's I have. The names show in the address book within the Mail program
Everything is listed last name then first name, I have rebuilt the address's in Address book an have replaced the address book .pilst. This is happening on just one computer, the other works fine, I have copied over the address from one computer to the other.
When typing in the name Frank the wheel just goes round and round
    Any suggestions?
    thanks
    Mike

And does that address correctly populate the To box in the new message composition window?
Would it be possible for me to see that address, as in not a privacy issue? If OK, then Save as Draft, use one click to open it in the Draft mailbox, then with a New Message addressed to me, click on Edit and choose Append Selected Messages.
My address can be found by clicking on my name to the left.

  • Strange problem with auto-fill addresses in mail and address book

There's an entry in my address book (version 4.0.6) that keeps adding a first name to an entry. I keep deleting it and somehow the first name keeps getting added. I suspected that Mail (2.1.3) was using auto-fill or LDAP to take the name it remembered in Mail and put it in Address Book by associating the email address, so I turned off LDAP and auto-fill and the problem still persists.
As an aside, I use mobileme to sync two macs (Address Book) and a pc (Outlook) so I really want to clear up this problem so the phantom entry does not keep getting transfered to all databases.
Should I delete some cache or something? One other problem (unsure if it's related) is that my Mail application always ask for my keychain password on startup - I have tried the keychain repair app and it seemed to work once, though this problem persists, as well.
    Thank you in advance!

Yes. the dot in front makes it invisible.
    Show hidden files...
Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Reboot or Force Finder quit needed for either change to show.
I'd move them both to the Desktop then reboot, if it works fine then you can Trash them.
