Address book not updating/odd sync issues

I've been fighting with this for about a week now. We are looking to simply have a shared address book for our office. We have one windows XP machine, but we aren't even worried about that at this point. He's actually on a macbook pro, so we'll likely end up running him on parallels eventually. Other then that, its strictly macs with the most up to date versions of the OS. I figured from the literature, it'd be a matter of creating an address book on the server and hitting "share", but reading around, it seems I'm not the only one having issues.
I set up our iCal by creating a user and set up our calendar. I was able to use the "delegation" tab under the accounts preferences to allow all the users in our office to view and edit the calendar. It's a little clunky, but overall not terrible. It works great. Updates come within 10 seconds to everyone.
I figured Address Book would be the same setup, but no such luck. I did the same process, but there isn't an option to delegate. We have three groups of contacts in our Address Book. Customers, Suppliers, and Employees. When I got it all up, one computer would get one group, another's wouldn't' get anything, and someone else might get two of them. If anyone edited anything, no one else got it. Where am I going wrong here?

O.K. I think I know what's wrong - - although I don't know how to fix it.
When I look under Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars, I have two accounts:
a 'MobileMe' account, that has Mail, Contacts, Calendars and Bookmarks listed underneath it in smaller font, and a second account, named 'office', which has only Mail listed underneath.
When I'm syncing, I'm successfully getting any new emails (from my 'office' account on my MacBook Pro), but no new Contacts, etc., are coming across.
I seem to be locked into this mobileme account, which isn't working right. I did check mobileme's 'cloud' page (if that's how you describe it), and my newly added Contacts are there sure enough. They just don't get copied across when I sync.
Is there a way to sync without using mobileme? Or changing my mobileme account so my default account gets new Contacts as well as new mail?
Thanks, malcolm

  • ICal & Address Book Not Updating from iCloud

I updated everything Apple throughout the day today, including my iPhone & MacBook Pro. I now have iOS 5 on my iPhone 4, OS X 10.7.2 on my MacBook, and all the apps associated with those 2 have been updated as well. I have iCloud set up on both my iPhone and MacBook. From what I understood from the demonstrations and ads about iCloud, when I add a calendar entry or change an address book entry on my iPhone, it will immediately be updated on my MacBook. I tried adding an event on my iPhone after everything was set up, and 4 hours later, it still is not showing up on my MacBook. The address book entry that I changed is also not showing up on my MacBook. Photo Stream is set up and running on both my MacBook and iPhone, so I know my credentials are entered correctly. I have Address Book and iCal checked in the options to be a part of iCloud on my MacBook, so it appears that everything should be staying in sync.
Any ideas why the changes on my iPhone would not be showing up immediately on my MacBook?
    Thanks

Install the Lion 10.7.2 OSx update or later.
In Apple/System Preferences/Internet/Wireless, connect to iCloud account.
    1. In iCal/Preferences/Accounts, add iCloud.
    2. In iCalPreferences/General, change the default calendar and reminder group to ones from iCloud, otherwise adding new appointments in iCal will default to the On My Mac calendar and they not show up in the iCloud calendar.
    3. In iCal/Calendars deselect the On My Mac calendars.
    4. To get subscriptions back, go to each of the subscriptions under iCal/Calendars and select Get Info then change the location from On My Mac to iCloud.

  • "Smart Groups" in Address Book not syncing to the iPhone

"Smart Groups" in Address Book not syncing to the iPhone
Normal Groups sync but smart groups do not.
Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?
    Thanks.

This same concept applies to syncing two macs via .Mac
The method I use for iPhone is this.
Define your smart group as needed.
Define a read group with a similar or convenient name.
From time to time drag your whole smart group to the real group.
The real group is the one that then syncs to your iPhone.
As a safety factor, I usually clear all entries from my real group before I drag over the updated smart group.
Anyway, this is simple and works well.
    Hope that helps.

  • Is there a trick to forcing Address Book to update/sync with Google?

I cannot figure out how to force Address Book to update / sync with Google. Every time I go into Address Book preferences and check the box for Google synchronization and type in my information it shows that it is connecting. But the contacts do not update. Then when I close Address Book and open up preferences again, the checkmark for Google synchronization is gone. This happens on my Mac Pro tower and also on my MacBook Air -- both are running OSX 10.6.4. Any ideas?

Try opening up iSync in Applications. Go into preferences and make sure the "Show in Menu Bar" option is selected.
Then you can click iSync in the menu bar and tell it to Sync Now. Might help?

  • Address Book auto update (sync?)

I'm having an issue where when I send an email, the contact it is attached to in address book is being automatically updated, so I'm having to go into address book and fix the change. For example:
In Address Book I have a friend named in Jessica. When she sends me an email it reads in mail as coming from "Jessica -" (I guess this is how it's configured with her mail provider). So when I reply to that email Address Book updates "Jessica"'s entry to read "Jessica -" (first & last name), when I don't want a last name at all.
Also, when I compose a blank email, I start typing Jessica and the To: field displays as "jessica - <[email protected]>" until I change fields and then it displays as "Jessica <[email protected]>". However, once the email is sent, Address Book is edited so her entry is "Jessica -".
I've tried looking in the preferences of both programs, but don't see where this action is controlled. Any help is appreciated.

    Greetings,
Is there some reason why you can't enter your recipient's last name, since that's how she has it in her mail program? There could be many different people you know, all named Jessica, and you know that would not work in Address Book without a last name to distinguish each of them.
Address Book is updated automatically when you receive email from someone that is in your contacts already, and it will change the name and/or email address to whatever your sender has. That's why you need to get in the habit of using first and last names for everyone, even if you only address them personally by their first name.
You can't see where this is controlled, so you shouldn't look for it; you won't find it. There is a way to stop it, but it will also stop anyone from being added to the Previous Recipients list. If that's what you really want to do, I can tell you how. But it's much easier to do what I suggested above.

  • Address Book "Note" is truncated when printing and syncing

I just upgraded to 10.5.2 and this is still a problem: The "note" section of a contact in the Address Book is truncated when syncing to my iTouch (and I've heard the same problem for the iPhone). I haven't run into a limit to the amount of text you can type in a Contact's note section on the Mac. I have some Contacts with rather lengthy notes. But when printing a Contact (and checking the box for the Note to be included) it prints a long note in two narrow columns on one page and if the note won't fit on one page, it truncates it. Even less of the note gets sync'd to the iTouch. If this isn't fixed soon, I'm going to go back to Outlook and my Axim pda. I gotta have my Notes!

Address works with Phonetic Name. Doesn't like the Name only for some reason.
    Solved!

  • Can't sync Address Book note field to iPhone contacts

    Hi:
I make heavy use of the "note:" field in my MacBook Address Book app. I store all kinds of detailed info about people, organizations, etc. in that field. I would like to be able to access that information on my iPhone 3G, but the phone's Contacts app has no corresponding "note" field.
Could this be a result of the way I imported data into my MacBook when I first got it?
In searching the fora, I found several people who said their iPhone contacts sync nicely with the Address Book note, and others who say it doesn't sync at all. Can anyone please shed some light on this for me?
    Thanks!

Not quite sure what you mean by "editing" but I've tried every method of selecting, deleting, cursor placement, backspacing, and typing I can think of -- again, with and without the Edit button clicked. I did seem to accumulate a huge number of duplicates along the way, and there were more than a thousand cards in my Address Book; maybe I went over the limit?

  • Why is my address book not syncing with my icloud contacts

Why is my address book not syncing with my icloud contacts?
I have my desk top and I have an iphone. I seem to have 2 different contacts list, 1 from my mac and the other icloud. If i add adress on my iphone to contact it does not sync to "my mac"

thank you very much that worked.first i thought if i restored then I would lose everything but of course I could re-sync so everything good now!!

  • Why does my address book not sync to iCloud?

Why does my address book not sync to iCloud?

I believe the duplicate address book accounts stems from the move from MobileMe to iCloud and both accounts still being active.
This is how I merged the two address books:
    1) To make sure all the contacts are in both:
    a) I selected On My Mac account - clicked on any address - Command A to select all - drag the contacts to the iCloud account - answered OK to merge and resolve duplicates.
    b) same in reverse: select the iCloud account - click on an address - click Command A to select all - drag the contacts to the On My Mac account - answer OK to merge and resolve duplicates.
In system preferences I found an iCloud icon and also a MobileMe icon. I was logged in under both.
    1)  In the Address Book preferences I selected iCloud and unchecked Enable this account.
    2)  In the Address Book I selected iCloud and clicked on the minus “-” to remove that account – leaving only the local Mac address book.
    3)  I went into system preferences and logged out of MobileMe
    4)  In system preferences I opened iCloud and the “Contacts” was not selected (from above) and I selected it.
I got a dialog box asking if I wanted to merge the iCloud contact with the local contacts – clicked YES.
… spinning wheel for a minute … voila – only one address book account – iCloud with syncing to iCloud and my iPhone.

  • Address Book not syncing with 9100 Pearl

I have a new 9100 Pearl. I have it connected to Blackberry Desktop Manager on my Mac via USB. When I sync the address book it seems to sync OK and gives a message that the sync is complete, but the are no contacts actually transferred onto the Blackberry.
I have the BB set to show all contacts and cannot think of any other settings that may need to be changed. Any ideas?
I have just changed to the 9100 from a 9700 Bold and had no problems syncing my address book with that device from the same Mac.

Maybe is some kind of filter on your device.
You can verify if your device has the contacts
Open your Desktop Manager for Mac connect your device go to Backup and there is an area there that is show you your device data or content verified if you has any data.
If you has data on your phone then is the filter on your device address book
Go to address book, press the menu key and go to filter, just be sure Business and Personal are not checked.

  • Address Book not recognised by iTunes

My Address Book database refuses to sync through iTunes to my iPhone. In iTunes (v9.0.2) in the Info pane for the iPhone, the Address Book database list of groups doesn't show (it's just empty), and the Address Book doesn't sync to the iPhone so the iPhone has no contacts in it until this is fixed. It's a problem for me as my entire business runs on this data in the iPhone - over 5,000 contacts in all.
There seems so be some disconnection between iTunes and the Address Book data.
This problem seems to have arisen after updating from OS 10.6.1 > 10.6.2 and then immediately from iTunes 9.0.1 > 9.0.2.
    Any help much appreciated.

I phoned Apple under AppleCare and after about 30 minutes trying various things established that I needed to "Reset sync history…" in iSync preferences. Here's how:
    1. Create a folder on desktop in which you will store files to delete later (keep them until problem solved). Call it (let's say) Keeps.
    2. Go to Home> Library> Application Support> iSync> SyncLocalCopy> everything - carry all files to the Keeps folder on desktop.
    3. Go to Home> Library> Application Support> AddressBook> everything EXCEPT folder named Metadata (or any file carrying that name) - carry all files to the Keeps folder on desktop.
    4. Search in Home folder for file: com.apple.isync.plist - carry all files to the Keeps folder on desktop.
    5. Restart Mac.
    6. Launch iSync. Go to iSync Preferences and click the button at the bottom of the prefs pane "Reset sync history…". Quit iSync when it's done.
    7. Restart Mac.
    8. Launch iTunes, plug in iPhone. Don't click to sync. Let it go through its setup process (this is NOT syncing - took about 30 seconds for in to do whatever it was doing). Quit iTunes.
    9. Restart Mac.
    10. Launch iTunes - the list of AddressBook data should now be there. If not then quit and relaunch again.
    Sync iPhone.
It worked perfectly for me. I hope it works for you too.

  • How do i get my address book to update iCloud contacts?

i had some groups set up on my Mac Pro address book and they where syced with Icloud and my Iphone.  just a few days ago i noticed that the contacts from A to J in each group are missing.  I corrected this on the Macbook Pro but it did not change on Icloud  or my I phone.
how do i get my changes in my address book to update on Icloud?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • Any ideas why my address book is out of sync with iCloud

I migrated my mobile me to icloud a few days ago. I started with the website, verified that my iOS versions were correct on my iPhone and iPad. Then I turned the service on for my mac, iphone and ipad. The only choice I had was to merge my contacts with icloud, so I accepte it. I have 5,815 contacts. My address book backup is 367MB. Ever since I turned this on, they have been out of sync. iCloud shows 2,355 contacts and my iphone is not update. Also, it took "my card" and seemed to combine it with another business entry I had.
Bottom line, sync is not working and my Mac goes to 100% CPU ever 8 minutes. My system drops to a crawl and I have to wait for it to finish. iCal, Mail and Address book are consuming all the CPU as it seems to be trying to sync. But nothing ever works.
This is very similar to what happened when I turned on MobileMe sync. It completely screwed up my address book and caused a $1200 phone bill while I was traveling in Europe because it would erase my entire address book and try to sync it over and over again.
I just turned off the iclould sync for address book my mac so I could work on my laptop without the CPU going to 100%.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
It sounds as though you may have exceeded some of the limits of Address Book in iCloud.
Total number of contact cards: 25,000
Maximum size of a contact card: 256 KBMaximum size of a contact photo: 224 KB
Maximum size of a contact group: 256 KB
Maximum size of all contact cards:
    Card text: 24 MB
    Card photos: 100 MB
Supported file types for a contact photo: JPEG, JPG, BMP, PNG, GIF

  • "Address Book (not installed)" in Organizer

I updated both my device software (5.0.0.973) and my desktop software (6.0.0.43) this morning.  After updating, when trying to sync to Outlook 2007 after that to the address book, it gave me a 0x80040fb3 error and wouldn't do any more synching.  I tried to delete the pictures and the problem contacts in Outlook.  Same thing happened after that.  Then I tried deleting the data in the Address Book and restoring it from backup.  Now it states in the Organizer screen of the BBDS that  "Address Book (not installed)".  I attempted to go to setup and click on the box to enable synching, but it won't save my selection.  My address on the device has been messed up ever since the original upgrade.  It only says one name and doesn't give me any options.  I might have messed this up when attempting to delete files.  Don't know.  Anyone know how to restore functionality to my address book?
The above error occurred one time with Tasks synching and one time with Calendar synching.  Tried to delete all problem entries.

I am running 6.0.0.43 desktop manager.  I downgraded the device software, not the desktop manager software.  What I did was either click on the "Update My Device" button in Desktop Manager or close out of Desktop Manager and do the device update online.
I believe both will get you to the same place and will eventually give you a screen where a button reads "View Other Versions".  Click on that button.  It will then show your current version and other versions which you can downgrade to.  Select the one you want and let it do its thing.  Make sure everything you currently have is backed up, because you will want to do a restore.
