Address Book now showing all LDAP attributes

The Address Book does not provide access to all LDAP attributes. For example
homePhone
homePostalAddress
labeledURI
are some of the fields currently left out. It would be nice if it was possible to configure the schema mapping, similar to thunderbird which allows the mapping off all the field it know about to corresponding LDAP attributes. Also inetOrgPerson, even though it is the defacto standard is rather due for redesign.
I am just wondering if anybody else if having this problem and if they found a solution?

the script did not work for me
python fixBirthdays
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "fixBirthdays", line 6, in <module>
import AddressBook
ImportError: No module named AddressBook
further, the particular one vcard that is misbehaving - i exported it, and opened in Tedit.
this is what isee for the date field.
item1.X-ABDATE;type=pref:2003-06-17
year is not negative either.
i unchecked and checked birthday calendar in iCal. exited iCal after uncheck, relaunched iCal and checked that option.
no show of the birthdate.
stumped.

  • 3 Problems with Address Book-- now considering Bento

I have 3 problems with Apple Address Book that make it close to unusable for me, so I'm considering buying Bento 3:
    1. *Can't un-do accidentally deleted text*- When you click in the "Notes" section, it will select all the text there by default (instead of merely inserting the cursor). If you are not paying attention, and hit any other key when it is selected, it deletes everything in there. UN-DO will not un-do this. I've verified and reported this issue to Apple, but it has still never been fixed or formally addressed (aside from many complaints in the Apple forums).
    2. *Search doesn't always work*- Yesterday I searched for one of my entries, Harbor Freight, by typing in the search "harbor". Nothing came up. I thought that maybe I never actually added this business and started with a new one. After I created the new one, I noticed that now, along with the new entry, the old contact suddenly showed up in the left column.
    3. *Cards disappear*- Many complaints on the web about this. I do not do any syncing with MobileMe or any device. Occasionally, cards just seem to vanish. Sometimes the card is actually still there, but changes in the Notes field or other fields I made on a previous day were evidently not saved and gone. Very frustrating.
Here's my concern with using Filemaker Pro's Bento: if it's using and accessing the same database as Address Book, all these problems might end up also existing in Bento. I use Address Book for business and personal and heavily rely on the Notes section. I can't keep wasting my time with this.
I don't mind paying the $50 for Bento if it resolves these issues, but the shared database worries me. I guess that I could create an independent Bento database that is completely separate from Address Book, but then I don't know how well it would integrate with Apple Mail.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Dave

DON'T DO IT. DO NOT INSTALL BENTO. I bought & installed it on 01/20/10 and it destroyed my address book. Gone forever. If you are having problems with Address Book now, wait until you see the damage created by Bento! Bento does not replace Address Book. It is a 'supplement' (at best) and uses and updates every file in your Address Book without you even knowing it! Well, you notice it when your database is destroyed and you find all of your contacts under 'No Name'. I am so serious. Bento is just a shell. None of your addresses are actually stored in Bento. They remain in Address Book. Every time you open Bento, it accesses your address book database, and starts re-formatting and re-working every entry along with any 'changes' you make. And who do you call for help? Apple says 'not our program'. Filemaker says 'we don't know anything about Mac's'.....I lost four years of addresses for all of my customers. Gone. In seconds! Just don't do it. Don't install Bento. And be sure to remove any 'smart groups' you have created as it seems to be at the root of most problems one encounters with address book.

  • How do i erase a corrupt contact list from iCloud,iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro and restore Address Book backup to all devices and cloud?

how do i erase a corrupt contact list from iCloud,iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro and restore Address Book backup to all devices and cloud?
I saved a corrected, most up to date version of my master Address Book Contacts as a back-up on my Mac Book Pro.
then in an effort to "simplify my life"  i attempted to sync my I phone contacts - ( pre clean-up version) with my clean list on Mac Book Pro, New I pad and newly available icloud. DUH!! Using iTunes to do the sync caused the clean MacBOOK Pro list to be commingled with the dirty iphone contacts. amd now the whole mess is in the cloud.
I need to clear out the contaminated lists from all iplaces, and startover with Back-up on my macbook pro. BUT HOW???
    Help
    Karen

I had exported an address book backup: abbu
so since i wrote, i have found my way into the cloud: selected all entries - deleted them all from the cloud.
This wiped out contacts on my iphone and i pad, and MBP, as well as on the cloud.  I then imported the abbu back into my now empty address book.
To repopulate the crowd, i selected all in my address book and created a single card vCard for export to my desktop.  I then dragged that vcard into my empty cloud.  Now my cloud has the same clean contacts as my MBP addressbook.  The cloud then pushed the clean contacts into my empty ipad and iphone contacts.
I had to go back to Address Book>preferences>Accounts and Add an I cloud account - but if you accidentally create a second i cloud account - all of a sudden your address book will duplicate itself.  I quickly reversed it by deleting one of the icloud accounts in my Address Book>preferences>Accounts.
I created a new entry on my MBP and it is now on all devices and in cloud
I also created a new entry on my iPhone and it is now in the address book on my MBP.
    I feel empowered!!
    Have i missed anything??

  • Sync part of address book but not all... how?

Just started using iSync though I've been using my cell and Mac for many years (i.e. newbie at syncing though proficient with Macs).
How can I sync part of my Mac's Address Book without including all 600+ contacts?
It's a pain to have to scroll through so many to get to the few I regularly use (I'm not on an iPhone so scrolling requires continued pressing of 'down' button on my Motorola cell).
Thanks for any help with this.
    Ron

    Thanks Julian.
I had not thought to click on the cell phone image/icon in the iSync window so as to be given the choice of Group folders to select to sync with my cell phone.
Before posting here I used the online iSync Help and did not see it mentioned anywhere.
It would be nice if Apple made this apparent by including a menu item in iSync that would take a user to that options window.
    Regards,
    Ron

You might get a better response in the iSync forum, as your question is about syncing.

  • How do I synch my iPad 2 to my Address Book so that all my contacts are there, and I don't have to type each one individually?

How do I synch my iPad 2 to my Address Book so that all my contacts are reproduced?  I'm having difficulty find the place and directions for the iiTunes Store.

This is selected under the Info tab for your iPad sync preferences with iTunes.

  • I had duplicates in ical and address book. i got all deleted, but now when i import ical that was backed up, it goes away in a few seconds. my address book still has duplicates.

I have a mobileMe account. I had duplicates in my address book and ical. I got all deleted and tried to import info back. Now my mac will import ical saved file in .icbu for only a few seconds and my address book still has duplicates.

Not sure why, but now I have two of everything. GREATTTTTTT.

  • Snow Leopard's Address Book now Requires Full Name to find a Contact

In all previous versions of Address Book, the user could simply type 'T' to instantly go to contacts with last names that start with 'T' (and businesses that start with 'T').
In Snow Leopard, Address Book can no longer search with one letter the way it did before; it uses a 'Spotlight' type of search where the user must type the full name in order to get an exact match. This type of searching is useful for finding documents on the Mac or searching the Internet, but is totally inefficient for finding contacts in Address Book.
It sounds like someone at Apple decided this was a better way to search for contacts, because this change in search method is described in the new Address Book 'Help' file; it says, "As you type, Address Book begins to search all the information on the cards, including notes, and displays matching contacts, with the matching text highlighted in each card." For example, let's say someone used to type 'T' to search for a contact named Bill Tilman. Now what happens is that Address Book stops at the first person who's first name starts with 'T', and highlights all the T's in the person's card (the T in 'telephone', the T in 'Street', etc. The user must now scroll through all their contacts manually to find Bill Tilman, or else manually type out the complete name 'Bill Tilman'. (If they just type 'Bill', they will only get the first person named Bill.)
I hope Apple will reconsider and will allow Address Book to do the quick one-letter searches by last name (as opposed to 'Sort' by last name, which it still has) like it used to. (Or at least make this a choice in Address Book Preferences.) This would also be more compatible with the way iPhone searches for contacts; when you select a letter in the iPhone's contacts, it finds contacts who's last name starts with that letter, as well as businesses, just like Address Book always used to.

Thanks for your response Ernie. You are correct in that whenever you type a series of letters, Address Book (as it always has) finds every single thing with that combination of letters - Names, businesses, adjectives, people's dogs' names, letters in product serial numbers, etc. This is useful for finding a subject on the Web, or finding all documents related to 'iPhoto' on your Mac, etc., but not useful, quick or convenient when trying to find one person to call in your Address Book (which is what people use Address Book for).
What is DIFFERENT in the Snow Leopard version, is that the ability to type one letter to instantly go to last names with that letter has been removed. Previously, you could easily find 'Bill Tilman' in one second by simply typing 'T'. Now you get every word that starts with T and all the words in the card that have a T in them. If you type out a full name like 'Bill', it finds every person named Bill. No one would ever want to find all their contacts named Bill to call them. You could type out the full last name 'Tilman', but there again you are forced to type out a complete name to do a search. It would actually be quicker to scroll down and find it manually. The ability to type a single letter to find the last name (or business name) of a contact you needed to call, was much quicker and easier than having to type out the entire name.

  • I cannot access my address book now that I have updated to Snow Leopard.

I bought Quickbooks 2012 for the Mac, which required that I update my OS to Snow Leopard (at least.)  So I purchased it online (not available at apple stores anymore.) And Installed it.  Then I went to apple and got the free updates and installed them.  Now I cannot use my address book.  A message comes up that says " You can't use this version of the application Address Book.app with this version on Mac OS X. You have address Book.app 4.1.2"  HELP!  All my personal and business contacts are in there and predictably, I need them.

Can you open Contacts and edit, insert, and delete cards, or does it fail to work, also?
Try the steps I outline here: Re: After Lion upgrade, my addressbook does not work++

  • Multiple Address Book Entries that all send to the same GW account ?

Our CIO wants a few address book entries that if chosen, will all send to
    the same account.
Seems easy enough but I haven't found a way, without creating a new account
that has some Forward or Delegate rule.
Is there a nicer way to do it without having another real GW account created
    and using Rules?
I was kind of hoping to just create an External User that simply points to
the one account but it complains that that e-mail address already exists.
    Thanks
    Marc

Why not using nick names ? The only downside is gw7 and earlier
nicknames don't show up in the address book. GW8 does show the
    nicknames in the address book.

  • How do you get the custom fields added to a address book to show up on Pages 09 when merging fields?

I created some custom fields in the address book and want to get them merged into a Pages 09 document.  When using the merge fields feature in Pages, only the standard fields are displayed.  I am looking for a way to have the custom fields from the address book inserted into the document.

I believe you will find them if you go to table - unhide all columns.  When you drag and drop card(s) into pages, it automatically shows default fields.  The others are there but hidden.  I hope this works for you!

  • Sort address book (and show) company names

    Hi all,
I would like to be able to do the following in Address book. Any help/suggestions would be most appreciated:
    1) Display a contacts First/Last name and the company they work for in the list of names
    2) Sort the list of contacts by company they work for
The reason I want to do this is so that for our media list we can put in the individual PR contacts names, email address and blog, website etc they work for and then be able to quickly see this information without having to click on each one. It will also speed up dragging multiple contacts to one email.
I realise that you can use groups to do this but it seems somewhat pointless to have one group per blog sometimes with only one contact in it and anyway why bother having the company info in the first place.
It does seem somewhat strange that the list view cannot at least show some pertinent info about each contact without having to click on them...

you should back up your whole system not just those two files. then you'll never miss anything. what's your backup setup?
the address book data is stored in home directory/library/application support/address book and the ical data in home directory/library/calendars.

  • How to have address book pictures show when ringing

I have a photo assigned to almost every contact in my address book on my imac which has synced with my contacts on my iphone. When they call me, why doesn't their picture show up on my iphone?

    all figured out

  • Address Book backup restores all but Groups

I have my Address Book organized into a lot of groups. Yesterday, for some reason, the Groups disappeared - it may be related to my experimenting with synching to MobileMe. Fortunately, I had created a backup Address Book archive before I played around with MobileMe synching.
But when I replaced the messed-up Address Book with the archive, none of the Groups were restored. I even went into Time Machine and pulled up an Address Book from the day before - which showed all the groups - but when I restored it, none of the Contacts were assigned to groups.
Am I doing it wrong? Is there any way to restore Address Book from an archive backup or from Time Machine and maintain your Groups structure?

first, there are no promises of anything when mobileme is concerned. That said. Address book is integrated with time machine but I had similar problems as you restoring groups so this may be a bug. the following should work for sure. quit address book, delete the folder homedirectory/library/Application support/address book and then restore it from TM backup. start Address book. your groups should be back.

  • My phone contacts don't sync with Address Book now that I have "Lion"! PLEASE HELP!

    Hello!
I have a Macbook Pro and have recently downloed Lion .... after having done this, my contacts no longer sync with Address Book. My calendar syncs with the iCAL but my contacts don't sync. I don't have iCloud set up and am not sure if that makes a difference, but any help would be GREAT!
    Thanks!
    Esther

The link provided did not contain a solution for me. However, based on what I read there, I was able to figure out the solution on my own.
Here it is. If you have a Motorola razr. Sorry I don't know which version of the phone or software I have. Go to phonebook. Choose the options by selecting the center menu key. Scroll through the list until you find Share Phonebook Entry. It is not in alphabetical order and may be the last entry. Select it and on the next screen choose bluetooth. The next screen is object exchange. If your computer appears as an option choose it, otherwise chose Look for device and when your computer comes up, select it. The phone will then send a card to your computer. Your computer will ask if you wanted to accept the card. There is also a box that gives you the option to select all. Check select all and then choose accept or hit return if accept is already highlighted in blue. The phone card will be saved to your computer in a default save location. You will next be given an option to see where the card is, in case you don't remember where your default location is. If you choose it, a window will appear showing you where the card is.
Next run isync and your data should be synchronized. Many duplicate entries will be somewhat altered in your computer's address book, i.e. first and last name will be combined and put in the first name box and so will not be recognized as duplicates. This is just part of the idiosyncrasies of the process. Manually go through and delete these.
This worked for me and I hope it is helpful to someone else out there having the same problem.
Thank you for the link Julian and others.
