Cannot print from Address Book! Print freezes and will not proceed.

I want to print an address list for Christmas cards. When I select the Group, select all and select Print I get the option box. I then select my printer and use the down arrow to open the dialog box that shows I am printing from Address Book and gives the different forms I can use (ie list, label, envelope) as well as the fields to include in the list. Once I have everything selected I click the Print radio button. All of the information under the Address Book options line disappears. Print remains highlighted and my printer Que never opens or appears. If I manually open the printer there is no print job showing. At this point the Address Book application is frozen. I cannot select cancel on the print dialog box (I can click it, but it does not highlight and it does not close the dialog box! In order to get out of this situation I have had to close Address Book. The quit option on the menu does work and Force Quit is unnecessary.
I actually spoke with AppleCare on this issue on Friday 05 Dec 2008. The tech I spoke with knew of no other such situations, but when I started checking on this discussion page I see a posting from REECO from clear back on 24 Sept 2008. The technician had me do several things. One was to pull my Caches folder out of my system Library folder. He also had me remove some Address Book preference items. The end result of these actions was a Mac Pro that would not boot! (The failure followed an Address Book crash with a "KERPROTECTIONFAILURE" and the message that some QualityMedia plugin might have created the problem!)(I could find no such plug in either on my system or via Google search!) The tech had asked me to boot to safe mode by booting while holding down the shift key untill the spinning gear appeared. The machine never progressed to a successful boot! I ended up having to use a 2nd hard drive and physically place it in internal slot 1 on my Mac Pro proceeding to reinstall Tiger! The bad news is that this did NOT solve my printing problem.
If I am attempting to print from a new install with just the Apple address card and the Owner's card in Address book the print proceeds fine. Once I import my data I am back to the same print failure.
Some diagnostic steps I have tried. I have tried USB local printers and bonjour printers. I have used Epson and Canon printers. I have tried to print to a PDF. I have tried printing from another computer (12 inch PowerBook) with identical results!
At this point I am going to call AppleCare Monday morning and see if anyone there has any more suggestions. Any suggestions this forum has will be received gratefully!

I was having the same crash or "just not print" problem as seen in other posts. I was able to fix it however, by making changes in some of the address cards I was going to print. By editing the "parent", "child", "spouse" fields which will get added to the name line of the label, I was able to get labels to print (or pdf preview) without difficulty.
I did not try and determine exactly what the problem was, but basically did a data cleanup. Since I didn't know that those fields would print, I had previously included information beyond just a name in the fields, like birthdates and such, eg. "Jimmy - 12/1/05". After either removing the fields entirely where I didn't really need them, or just cleaning them down to names only, they printed just fine. I'd considered trying to disable the feature entirely but the data cleanup was not hard for a dozen or so names.

Address Book: Importing Multi-Line Fields

A common and often unavoidable import format for Mac Address Book is Comma Separated Value files (.csv). Address Book cannot import CSV files that have multi-line fields, such as might be included in Notes, because it cannot tolerate embedded newline characters (a.k.a., carriage returns, line breaks). (See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AddressBook/4.0/en/ad808.html. The CSV spec (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comma-separated_values) addresses this need by requiring that fields which contain newlines be enclosed in quotes, but Address Book doesn't adhere to this part of the standard.)
Here's a way to import CSV files and have multi-line fields preserved:
Using an editor, replace +every embedded+ newline character in the CSV file with "\n". Take care to not alter the newline characters that end each record. Import the resulting file into Address Book using the CSV option. Selecting the 'Last Import' group, export those specific records using the vCard option. Then delete those records. Then import the vCards previously exported. Presto!
Apparently, although Address Book is blind to "\n" when importing CSV files, and exporting vCard fields, it interprets this character sequence as newline when importing vCards.

Thanks, but the problem is not importing to AddressBook, it is exporting. I did discover from another that I can export very easily to a Numbers spreedsheet. It is exceptionally simple. But it will not export custom fields. Someone said that is because of a vcard standard. My custom fields are just "name" fields that I have labeled differently. But Numbers does not support the name (it only takes the name of the card).

Thanks for the question. You can actually configure this behavior from Mail preferences:
1. Choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
2. Click Composing.
3. Deselect the checkbox for "When sending to a group, show all member addresses".
When you send an email to the group, only the groups name will be seen.

Access via command line to the data files for Address Book

Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8
Mac Mini 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHZ DDR3
I rolled back from Mountain Lion Server to Snow Leopard Server because I needed mySql. At the time I was under AppleCare and they walked me through the steps. However, I ended up with Address Book issues.
Addressbook user on the Snow Leopard Server was upgraded to Mountain Lion Server. During the rollback process, the Apple tech had me delete the Addressbook user.
When we finished the rollback, he had me recreate the Addressbook user, but now it is linked to a new, empty data file. I cannot add new contacts nor edit or delete them. So I need to use the command line to view both data store files, find the one that has my data in it and re-attach it to my new Addressbook user.
Can someone help me with the Command Line commands?

There are a couple of more advanced solution I can think of and I'm actually working on one myself.
* You can create your own jnlp client that allows you to pass in arguments. That sounds harder than it easy. Building a stripped down jnlp client (e.g. no installer, no applets) using one of the two open-source client as a start takes probably just a couple of days and should be sufficient for in house usage.
* Another solution is what I'm working on now. You can wrap your own executable around javaws that takes your passed in arguments plus jnlp href and looks up the original in the cache and adds a new one to the cache that it passes on to javaws and suddenly everything works as it should. Add line to address book?

I know it's possible to add a line to a contact's street address but how can I add a line for a town or a suburb?
I've looked in abaddressformats.plist and there seems to be a possibility but everything I've tried seems to be ignored by address book.
Any ideas?

I'm not sure if there is a way to add an Address2 field, but if you are typing the in Address field and press enter, you will start a new line just below the Address filed. It is still technically one field, but will appear as two lines, hopefully giving you the desired result.

Custom fields and line length in Address Book

Hi everyone. Does anyone know how to alter the permitted line length of a label in Address Book? If I create a custom label the label will be truncated if it is too long. This does not seem necessary as there can be loads of blank space to the right of the card window. In other words the label will not resize dynamically to accommodate a long custom label. I have a feeling that you may be able to edit a .plist file in the Package to adjust the default number of characters the label can have, but I'm a bit nervous about poking about when I'm not too knowledgeable. Any ideas?

Of course not. You've chosen a specific label style/size, so if it were to resize dynamically, that would cause text to print where there is no label stock.
You cannot edit any file to change the number of characters per label; at best, you could creae your own label size and define the margins, but that's it.

Add 2nd address line to Address Book template

This question was asked back in December (by another user) but got no answers, so I'm going to try again.
From the original post: "How can I add an a second address line to the address book "address" template? Many of my contacts have multiple line addresses. For example, 1st line = department and mailstop, second line = street address.
I can see how to add other information to the "global template" such as job title and birthday... how do I go about getting some flexibility from the address record?"

Is there any Contact Manager or Address Book that I can install on my PC (Windows 7) that when synced to my Iphone that will accept my custom Lables for type of entry, such as you have- Home, Work, then "Private Line" ?

The issue eventually resolved itself, I still don't really know why. I kept up with Windows update, and attempted downloading iTunes again from the Apple website, and it just... worked. It now works fine. I don't know why it took approximately 4 months to work, though.
I'm sorry I don't have any more helpful information. Posting here was my last resort, and clearly Apple never bothered to reply.

Suddenly my iCal monthly view has begun listing two lines for each birthday from the address book. I didn't make any changes to the preferences. How do I return to one listing per birthday?

I've noticed this as well. I think it started with 10.7.4.

Address Book prints a line break before each long email or instant messenger address.
When printing a list to PDF with e-mail addresses too long for one line, the address is preceded by a line break. See image:

This bug is not critical, but it is annoying. Use this information as you see fit.

What have you done (if anything) to result in the apparent fonts being used in this example?
However, with testing, I see what you mean. The only setting that seemed to avoid this, is to use Pocket AB format, which then uses a smaller font for the email address, and appears to avoid this.

Issue with long gaps between lines in both Mail AND Address Book

Hey folks,
I'm having a weird problem... I've done a bit of research on here but I have yet to find my exact issue... I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on this for me!!
This problem has been happening in my Address Book app for awhile now, but more recently started happening in Mail - there are long gaps in between lines such as Name, Date, Subject, From, ect...etc... Plus, in Mail, when I hover over the To and From names, the highlight bubble is really large! It's very strange... check out this screen grab...
I've tried repairing permissions but that didn't seem to help.
My Mail only did this after quitting the program and starting it back up, but now it does it all the time. Address Book has been having this issue for quite some time.
Any help would be much appreciated!!!

Thanks so much for your help... To answer your question, yes I did research those topics but finding things in bits and pieces didn't seem to do the trick. Well, tonight I ran Font Finagler AND I reinstalled Library > Fonts from my OS X install disc... And low and behold, MY PROBLEMS ARE CURED!!!!

You chose a group of addresses you want to print and then use command-P. You will get a drop down menu where you have to select the Avery number or size of labels. It's pretty rigid.
I can't stand the limitations of the Contacts method of printing address labels. I don't want to waste a partial sheet if my selection doesn't come out even with the number of labels. I'd like to duplicate addresses which I use often to fill up the partial sheet. I like being creative with fonts, colors and even borders or images. Your ability to be creative with Contacts printing is severely limited.
I've used Pay&Play's Label Printer Pro software for years. I originally paid MUCH more for this program. It's extremely versitle. Design one label and you can copy it to the rest of the labels in the drop down menu with one click. Chose how many of whichever lablel you want to duplicate with a simple cut and paste to fill up the page.
I can vouch that it works perfectly with Mountain Lion, v 10.8.2.
