Address Book, Palm and syncing

1. Thinking about adopting the Address Book / iCal / Mail combo for both business and personal use. When I initially looked at this some 2yrs+ ago, there was a limit to the maximum number of Address Book entries possible.
Does anyone know the current maximum?
2. Hoping to sync with a Palm m500 and benefit from cross-app contact info. on my Apple hardware. How comprehensively does the Apple syncing transfer the fields from the Palm? Previous testing showed that at that time, syncing between devices was pretty limited - I have a complex Palm setup with 2,000+ entries and would like to preserve as much of this data as possible.
3. Of the members using the Markware Missing Sync software, is this better than the Apple sync as claimed?
Many thanks for any feedback.

The Missing Sync for Palm OS from Mark/Space is a far more robust and capable program than iSync, even with earlier Palm devices. It does not, however, provide maximum support for handheld organizers or smartphones running any Palm OS release prior to version 4.5, so you will not—with your m505, as I do not with my Palm Treo—enjoy the extended support offered to users of Tungsten E2 and T5, Treo 650 and later devices. Mark/Space explains it in this manner:
"…Mark/Space conduits support syncing extended fields only with the newer Palm applications: Calendar, Contacts and Memos. When syncing a Treo 600 [EDIT: and earlier organizers and smartphones] with the Mark/Space conduits, extended fields such as contacts photos, birthdays, location fields, IM addresses, URLs and others will not sync between the Mac and the device because of the older applications…"
It is important to understand the field mapping afforded by the Mark/Space conduits, and the limitations imposed by the Palm OS. You can find more information about those issues here…

…and here:
http://www.markspace.com/support/index.php?x=&mod_id=2&root=123&id=2563
Proper installation of the Missing Sync also requires that you overwrite the contents of your handheld during the first synchronization event, requiring that you synchronize one last time with the Palm Desktop [if that is what you are now using] and then export your records from the Palm Desktop as vCard and vCal files, import those into the Address Book and iCal, then install and use the Missing Sync for Palm OS. You'll want to proceed cautiously and make sure that you back up your contact and calendaring data at each appropriate step.
The iSync Palm Conduit is not nearly as extensively mapped as the Mark/Space conduits are and you are liable to be quite disappointed with the limitations imposed, including the fact that you can synchronize only a single address in each record, and only where such an address is labeled home in the Address Book contact record.
Any reference to maximum record limits that I have seen refers only to those imposed by device manufacturers like Motorola for contact and calendaring records on mobile handsets. The Address Book and iCal seem to have no pre-defined limits.

  • Contacts and Mac OS Address Book won't sync anymore

I have an iPod touch, 2nd generation, with iOS 4.2.1, which has worked perfectly well for years.
Since I got an iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1, and iTunes 10.5.1, and set up iCloud, and synced the iPad to my Mac, now my iPod touch will no longer sync any address book entries between iOS Contacts and Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion's Address Book.
I've tried restoring the iPod touch to its factory-fresh setting and syncing with the Mac. I've tried rebuilding the Mac OS Address Book index, and repairing permissions on Mac OS X. Nothing seems to help.
Another clue is that the iPod touch Contacts stopped syncing at 512 Contact entries, while the Mac's Address Book had 521 entries. I think 512 is a suspicious number; is it an upper limit on entries that sync with iTunes and Address Book?
    Any help would be appreciated.

The messaget is correct, that is, your iCloud calendar will no longer be on your Mac as long as you are signed out of iCloud.  Your calendars will still be on you iPhone and on iCloud.  After syncing your contacts to your iTouch, you then sign back into iCloud on your Mac and everything will be back as it was before you signed out.  I did it on my Mac and have all my calendars and contacts as well as my wife's iTouch has all calendars and contacts.
You seem to be concerned about losing data, which is a valid concern.  Do you back up your Mac using Time Machine?  It is a great resource installed on the Mac to assure that if you commit any errors that resutls in the loss of data, then you can easlily restore it via Time Machine.  If you have not been backing up your Mac then consider doing it.  The Apple Store sales personnel recommended to me the LaCie Storage devices since they easily interconnect with the Mac.  A Google search will find them at competitive prices as compard to what Apple charges.  I am so paranoid about losing data that I have three separate 1TB LaCie drives backing up my Mac.  I will be installing a forth as a network backup drive for my wife's Mac and my MacBook Air.

  • ICal and Address Book no longer syncing with iPhone - HELP!

    HELP!
I am a long time Apple user and rely heavily on my iPhone to keep me where I need to be, when I need to be there. I have an iPhone 4 and it is running OS 6.0.1. Everything was working fabulously until recently. Sadly I don't know when the problems started--when I updated to OS 6 OR when I updated iTunes to version 11. Either way, my iCal and Address Book no longer sync with my iPhone. And to add insult to injury, my phone is no longer automatically detecting the AT&T microcell I have in my house. I have to reboot my phone every time I come back in the house--talk about annoying.
I am not super techy, so I am hoping someone can help me with this. I LIVE by my iPhone and as a self-employed person, I can't afford for this device to stop giving me information. I also don't want to do entries on my phone AND computer everytime something changes. I do not want to go back to the more reliable paper calendar and address book.
I have iCloud turned on, and it appears to sync my address book with my iPhone. But I seem to be a mess with iCal and my desktop. And between iCal/Adress Book on my computer and iPhone, nothing is talking.
    HELP!!!!

I think my company updated Exchange on Friday and since then I cannot sync with Mac Mail, Entourage does not seem to be working either?
    Any fix found

I ahve the same problem, I had to re-intall the OS on my phone and since then both of my Rogers email account are refusing to let me access the CARDDAV.
When I try to add the CARDDAV I get the following error : At This Time Your Contacts Account Can`t Be Added. Please Try Again Later
I have been trying daily for the past two weeks with no success, and the same thing is happening on the PlayBook (I tried to change the password on the accounts to see if it would solve the problem)

  • Address Book Won't Sync Between iTunes and IPT

I just authorized my new macbook for my iTunes/iPod Touch. Everything syncs perfectly EXCEPT for the address book (despite the "Sync Address Book contacts" being checked).

I hope its OK to join my problem to this Post...
I have a very similar problem, where all my contacts were delete from my computer Address Book and transfered (not sync) to the iPhone.
    Is there a fix...

  • Address book app and Addresses pane in Mail not synced

Address book app and Addresses pane in Mail not synced
I add a contact to Address Book app eg [email protected], this address is not imediatley available to use in Apple Mail app.
The address [email protected] eventually appears in the Address panel in Maill app, it can take from 3 minutes to hours to appear, surely both apps are reading the same database.
This is particularly problematic when adding new contacts to groups and then emailing that group, Im never sure the group in Mail app is the same as the group in Address Book app.
Nothing seems to speed up this process ie quitting and re-opening Mail app or Address book app.
    I have tried deletting "AddressBook-v22.abcddb" ~/Library/Aplication Suport/Address Book
    I have tried forcing ~/Library/Aplication Suport/Address Book to re-index.
I have also restarted, repaired permissions, ran fsck -fy in single user mode.

Because the sender has their name as part of the email address that is sent, and when they send you a message that matches the one in your Address Book, it's updated to show their name as Mail received it. But if you had previously sent them email before that update occurred, then your Previous Recipients database in Mail doesn't use that newly updated information in Address Book.

  • ICal and Address Book have stopped syncing

For some reason, iCal and Address Book have stopped syncing between my MacBook and my iPhone. They had been syncing with iCloud but I noticed that some things aren't being updated. My photos are still being synced via Photo Stream just fine.
One other issue, when i go into System Preferences on my MacBook and click on iCloud, it wants my Apple ID password. But when I enter it, the spinning disks spins indefinetly. Doesn't connect. Then when I hit escape, it asks me if I want to delete my contacts or delete them from my Mac. (Yep I'm on the internet.)
I have also gone into Address Book prefs>Accounts and unclicked "Enable this account". When I do, some of my contacts dissappear and they reappear when I re-check it. So it seems like it is still seeing iCloud.
In iTunes I have checked Sync Contacts and Sync Calendars. I got a pop-up dialog box telling me that I didn't need to do that because iCloud wasn handling the Sync. But I checked them anyway. And I can't get them to sync on normal iTunes manual sync.
Any thoughts? I don't mess with iCloud often enough to know what should be happening. Thanks!

Not sure why, but now I have two of everything. GREATTTTTTT.

  • (Exchange) Address Book will not SYNC

I've had issues for a couple days now..
We were struggling with some BESAdmin security issues. but they've been resolved.
but one of our blackberries out of 4 will not sync with his address book on exchange.
    i've re-activated his account.
    i've pushed service books.
i've check the PIM settings and they're fine..
i've tried everything and i'm getting ragged on because he's a boss.
please help! any tips or ideas..
it's a 8310 on the Rogers network.. we have 2 others the same model without any problems.

So in the Address Book Options the Wireless Synchronization is set to Yes? Was the device wiped and re-activated at any point, or just re-activated?
I'd try to deleted the Desktop[SYNC] service book, regenerate the encryption key from the device, and undelete the Desktop[SYNC] service book.
If that doesn't work you can force a sync with the Desktop Manager. First in the Address Book Options change the Wireless Synchronization to No. Then go into Backup and Restore | Advanced. Select the Address Book on the right side and hit Clear. Now go back into the Address Book Options and change the Wireless Synchronization back to Yes. That will force a sync from the Contacts folder to the Address Book on the BlackBerry

  • Why is there missing info in the windows address book fields after syncing iphone 4 contacts?

I am reaching the end of my rope trying to deal with syncing/backing up contacts and other "non copyright protected" content from my iphone 4 and my desktop (and preferably my laptop as well).  I've spent literally days trying to solve this problem with ultimately no solution.  So, cutting through my MULTIPLE issues and focusing on one primary I need help backing up my contacts from my iphone 4 to ANY computer.  Here is what I am working with:
A relatively ancient (5yrs) Window XP desktop with virtually no contacts in Windows Address Book and with only the native Outlook Express on it.
An iphone 4 ios 4.3.1 that was initially and is still setup/synced with the above XP box (minus checking the sync contacts box).
An iphone 4 contact list that is primarily populated by about 200 contacts transfered from an old ATT SIM from the previous ancient phone.
A new Windows 7 laptop that I would love, love, love to use in conjuction with the XP for syncing/backing up not protected, personal data and iphone purchases.
So, with that in mind I have been syncing my phone with the XP w. the "manual manage music..." box checked and all other syncing options other than apps unchecked.  I wanted to backup by contacts for emergency recovery and to allow sycncing for the increasing business contacts.  Should be easy right?  Not so much.  I tried clicking the "sync contacts w/ windows address book" option and then synced.  I go to WAB and the contact list is there.  However, if I look w/in each contact the fields are not filled in.  If it was a contact that had name, number, address on my phone the WAB version has the name listing but nothing in the number/addy fields.  Now, this is true w/ virtually every contact and most were from that SIM transfer.  HOWEVER, contacts that I added ON the iphone (ie manually w/ the phone) DO have complete information.
So, what do I do to make an actual, complete backup of all the contacts on my iphone w/o having to manually reinput all of the real information??  I'm frankly terrified that in trying multiple solutions I will lose all my phone contacts which at this point in my life would be absolutely devistating (ie I would probably lose my job).  If it is a matter of newer hard/software I would gladly sync to the new Win 7 laptop instead but there I run into the other aggrivation of apple making it so bloody difficult to use one ios device with more than one personal computer.  I'm dumbfounded and frustrated on soooooo many levels and would send countless good vibes to anyone who can help!   Advice?  Solutions?  I'd promise my first born but who wants that these days...?  Help, please! ;-)
BTW, sorry for the long wind but I'll add on my "optimal solution" if anyone is feeling especially helpful and has an answer:
I'd like to be able to plug my iphone into both my XP desktop and my Win 7 laptop and sync/backup to both freely (that is after all the real intent of syncing, non?)  I don't care about music, videos, or other protected content.  I manage that manually and frankly, I can do without having on the iphone as long as I can accomplish being able to sync/backup/restore all the iphone stuff like apps, settings, personal info, and contacts to both the desktop and the laptop.  The purpose is that I need to be able to use and recover everything (on the road or at home) if either my laptop or my iphone dies/disappears.  But, understanding impermanence as it relates to portable devices, I want a solid backup of everything at home waiting on my desktop.  Is that really too much to ask apple???

Seriously folks?  I know it was long but I added all info to negate a need for endless back/forth clarifications.  No answers???
FYI, i tried syncing contacts to google/gmail and it was a total clusterF as well.  No gmail contacts, synced iphone, gmail contacts populated w/ all info but w/lots of repeat entries.  Used seek and merge repeats in gmail and then resync but no such luck.  Lots of iterations and nothing but fails.  Seems everytime the phone and the gmail lists are "as desired" a new sync puts a ton of repeats back into gmail or onto phone.  Still perplexed and still needing help....
    pretty please....

  • Address Book doesn't sync UP to iCloud, but syncs back down..

(Sorry, Winston, and maybe Roger, I must be developing Alzheimer's ..I just cannot understand how this iCloud system works..)
I've searched through hundreds of queries and answers, but cannot find a similar problem ..but maybe I simply haven't looked hard enough.
Question on behalf of my good lady ..and I've been tearing my hair out over this for WEEKS..
She has 3502 contacts in her Address Book on her OS X Lion 10.7.4 MacBook Air. She has two iPhones. They're both running iOS 5.1.1. She has enabled iCloud on ALL these three devices, using her @me.com identity and appropriate password.
She updates Address Book contacts ONLY on her MBA - for sync'ing to her phones - and she does NOT update any Contacts info on her phones in order to have them transferred BACK to her Mac. That's how she prefers to work.
The only way that her Address Book contacts will sync UP to iCloud from the Mac appears to be to select 'All on My Mac' within Address Book, and to Export as vcards to a file on her Mac, and then, in the online iCloud Contacts webpage, to Import that file of vcards. All well and good, but that seems to ignore all her various Groups; everything ends up bundled all into one group. (Perhaps each Group in her Mac's Address Book needs to be separately Exported and then Imported, but surely it shouldn't be as long-winded as that.)
(About 402 of these contacts are not accepted by the online iCloud Contacts, although they seem to fall within the requirements of not being too many, not being too large, etc. But that's a separate problem which I'm still investigating ..maybe the names are formatted incorrectly; I'll keep working on that separately..)
Anyhow: by explicitly Importing all those Address Book contacts into the iCloud Contacts, they then immediately start to get distributed - correctly! - to her iPhones ..but also back into the Address Book on her Mac, thereby DUPLICATING them all in Address Book! (They CAN be seen as SINGLE entries by choosing 'All iCloud'.)
I cannot understand the opaque instructions in all of the iCloud documentation. NONE of the documentation which I've studiously read (online, in System Prefs, in every Help file I can find) seems to indicate a DIRECTION for this iCloud sync'ing.
WHERE - if there is such a place - does one specify that contacts should go only UP FROM the Mac, and not BACK DOWN to the Mac?
There seem to be options only to turn ON sync'ing (or off), but not the DIRECTION of sync'ing, or which device(s) take precedence. (..In iTunes - when sync'ing phones to a Mac with a cable - there's a preference to over-write EITHER the host Mac with data FROM a phone, or to over-write an iPhone's data with data FROM the Mac..)
    So I'm asking..
    (a) Can one specify a DIRECTION when turning on sync'ing for a device?
    (b) With iCloud sync'ing turned ON on a Mac, is there any known reason why Address Book contacts should not send themselves UP to the iCould, instead of having to be manually Imported?
    (c) Does one Export Groups individually? ..But what if a name is in more than one Group ..does it get duplicated online in iCloud?
    (d) Is there not the intelligence within the iCloud facility for the system to NOT distribute back, or duplicate, contacts to the device which is the SOURCE of those contacts? Should it not do a comparison between iCloud and a device, and then recognise that those contacts already exist on the remote device, and therefore NOT distribute them BACK again to the SOURCE? (..Or am I having too high expectations?..)
Many thanks in anticipation, and I'm so sorry to be such a nuisance if this has already been answered a zillion times before.
(Yes, Winston; she has almost as many iPhones as you have AppleTVs!)
    All best wishes,
    David.

David, nice to hear from you again, hope you are well.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Address Book.
I believe you have duplicates because you have two sets of contacts. "iCloud" and "On My Mac". Once you have created all your contacts in the iCloud account, you should delete them from On My Mac.
You can move contacts simply by dragging and dropping from one account to the other, you don't need to export them all to the desktop (although doind so will serve as a good back up if all goes wrong). You should note that this copies them though rather than simply move them, so you'll need to delete the old set when you are done.
As for preserving groups from the On My Mac Account, you can't but you can simplify recreating them by copying contacts (drag and drop) from an on my mac group to an empty group in iCloud.
Not sure about the contacts that you are struggling to move.
Many aspects of iCloud are difficult to understand, have a mull through what I've said so far and come back if everything still doesn't fall into place.

  • How can I delete ALL of my Address Book entries and start fresh?

Yes. I know that sounds extreme, but……
I use Outlook on a PC at my office, and I have an sbcglobal/Yahoo mail account. I look upon my office Outlook as my ultimate contacts list (over 1,100 entries) and my calendar.
I use the sbc supplied free Intellisync software to sync all of my calendar and contacts from my office PC into sbc/Yahoo. That way I actually get e-mail reminders of appointments, etc. in addition to my Outlook notifications. It is actually pretty nifty.
I have also successfully signed-on to my Yahoo account at home on my MAC and exported all of my contacts from Yahoo (which had been populated by the PC Outlook listings via Intellisync) onto my desktop and then imported them into Address Book. But I did that some time ago and now my Outlook listings have been updated rather substantially. I would like to able to do a complete re-install of the new and improved contacts from the Yahoo repository.
Again - I certainly do not want to delete the Address Book app itself – I just want to start with a clean slate so there are no conflicts or duplicate entries (which in fact is seemingly a bug in the Yahoo/Intellisync. Is there a way to completely wipe clean all of my Address Book entries?
    Thanks

    Hello Allan -
Your help on a previous post was great re: my wanting to know how to delete the Address Book contents so I can re-import an updated list form my office Outlook, via my yahho/sbcglobal import.
Well - here is an interesting quandary:
I have successfully exported my yahoo address book/contacts as a .vcf file Yet - once I have expunged the prior Address Book data and want to now import the NEW Yahoo data to rebuild the database it only takes (enters) the phone numbers and does NOT import ANY of the address information. I am positive I did this once since our original exchange and everything transferred just fine, but now….?!
What I cannot determine is where the fault may be: does the export NOT include the addresses (in which case I am doing something fundamentally stupid wit the export) or the vcf cards are complete, but Address Book is not “seeing” anything other than the phone #s and e-mail addresses.
    Any thoughts?

Lost all my contacts in Mac address book.  Tried syncing my iPhone/iPad contacts to Mac via iTunes and is not working.  Please help

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Unless you have the contacts backed up somewhere, you won't be able to restore them.
You and your son should have your own iCloud accounts then you can keep your own contacts and calendars etc and avoid deleting each others.

  • Address book to google sync  does not work

I use Google apps as my primary calendar and address book. I have them synced to the Mac OS X ical and address book (to use off line). I have the Mac OS X ical and address book synced to mobile me to update other computers and my iphone.
The net result is everything matches the Google apps calendar and address book.
    Well, not so fast.
The calendar does work as expected.
In the Mac OS X address book, the Google sync option does not sync (you can enter in your user name and password fine, it appears to make connection fine, but it does not sync). The mobile me does sync as expected.
It is simple, there is not a lot you can do wrong, it just does not work.
As a work around, I am using Googles over the air sync to iPhone which does work, but that means the mac address book is getting skipped.
When does the checked Synchronize with Google happen in address book? When you open address book? Why does the option only appear if you have an iPhone? How do I get the address book to google sync to work?
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    bob

Mine actually performs the sync, but after a few rounds of syncing, some contacts get deleted, some get their photos removed, some get duplicated, and some get removed from groups. The sync basically puts my address book through a blender. I'm syncing both with MobileMe and Google. Well, that is I tried to. I've decided not to sync with Google since that's what seems to initiate the mess.
