Address book "places" feature Possible??

I would like to search my contacts list by location, on a map (similar to the "places" feature in iPhoto). For instance, if I am in Dallas on business, I'd like to be able to search for all contacts in my address book who have a Dallas address and map out ALL of them. This includes searches by zip code, area code, state, etc. I understand the address book is already paired with google maps and it's possible to map out a contact for driving directions etc, but that can only be done with ONE contact. I want to be able to see ALL of the contacts for a specific region. Possible??

Hi, I have no idea how it ties in with Google Maps, but have you tried making a Smart Group that say contains Dallas?

  • Address Book Search Feature Died

I'm baffled. One minute I'm using Address Book fine. The next, I type any text in the search box and the results come up blank.
All my contacts are still there. They show up if I click on "All" or on any of my groups I've created.
But I cannot search for a name. With 1400 names that's a lot of manual searching to do.
    Any suggestions?

Don’t reinstall anything. Your data is stored within your home folder, not in the application itself. Try this:
    1. In Address Book, do File > Back up Address Book, just in case.
    2. Quit Address Book, Mail, and any other applications that might use Address Book for something. Or just quit all applications to be on the safe side.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Caches/ and move the Address Book and com.apple.AddressBook folders to the Trash (there is no need to empty the Trash yet). Check whether the problem is fixed.
    4. If the problem persists, quit all applications again, go to ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/ and trash any ABPerson.skIndex or ABPerson.skIndexInverted files you may see there. Check whether the problem is fixed.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Looking for claws mail address book plugin/feature

    Hi
I was wondering if there a way to show the address book as a panel in the message editing window (like in thunderbird)?
I haven't seen it neither in preferences nor external plugins (but of course I could have missed something)
    Thanks!:)

Can you export your Thunderbird address book as a vcf card? That is, select all cards, and drag them all to the desktop, or export to the desktop, as a single "mega-VCF" card? If so, then double clicking on that single vcf file should import all into the Address Book application. Fields that do not have data entries in Thunderbird will be left blank in the Apple Address Book.
You may run into an issue with duplicate cards of the same proper name if you are using proper name on the cards. But if, for example, you use proper names on the address/phone set, and email addresses only (no proper names), you should be able to avoid that problem. You could then create groups within Address Book to make a distinction between them. Maybe, once each card was associated with a group, you could maintain proper name on both, since they should be distinguished by group affiliation. But I am not sure on that; that is something that you would have to experiment with.

  • Is it possible to export my outlook contacts to my macbook address book?

Hi! I am trying to export my outlook contacts to my MacBook address book, is it possible or should I type every contact again? thanks!

There is a 3rd party application called o2m that does this and I can vouch for the fact that it works - a client of mine was going crazy until we found and used it.
Outlook sure makes it difficult to export mail stuff, doesn't it?
    Best of luck.

  • Address Book Sharing

Is it at all possible to share parts of my address book but not the hole darn thing? Not sure if this really needs to be in feedback or if I am missing something.
My address book covers everything from family, several groups of friends, financial companies, software companies, health related companies, work venders, co-workers, past job references and several different mail lists participants. As you can see I have many aspects of my life that should not be viewed by all other aspects of my life.
Simply, how can I share the "Family" group of my address book with my family to edit and put their current or updated information?

Unfortunately the Address Book sharing feature for both Tiger and Leopard only works on an all-or-nothing basis.

  • How can I move address book information between Address Book and Entourage?

(I have the same question regarding iCal and Entourage.) I have a lot of important information to enter, info that would be very difficult to relocate. I had some problems with iCal awhile back (it started randomly deleting events), so I am trying to figure out which program(s) to use. Since I don't have much experience with these, I would ideally like to be able to start in Entourage since that program seems better laid out for me, but be able to export the information to Address Book and iCal so I can make use of the Address Book widget feature, etc.
Is it realistically possible to export from Entourage into AB and iCal and how do you it?
Also, I have a first generation iPod, and just got an iPod Touch so that I could have access to this information on the go, along with the rather lame "notes" approach to entering information (while I hope for a free upgrade that will allow me to edit my calendar). So I am also trying to figure out:
How do I export Entourage information onto my iPod Touch? Can it be done directly easily now or does it need to go through AB and iCal?
I've done that on my old iPod, but it was very confusing between "identities"?? and remembering exactly how to do it again one I figured it out. I had to locate a copy of Tiger just to manage to get the iPod Touch, so I am grateful for any suggestions of the best way to do this.

''' "I thought FF29 was supposed to be the most customizable Firefox yet?" ''' <br />
Whoever told you that was incorrect, as far as I am concerned. Firefox still is more customizable that the "competition", but not as much as previous versions were.
The Home button can be moved, but the Back / Forward combo button is attached to the Address Bar - they can't be separated.
The combo Stop / Reload button is locked in the Address Bar.<br />
The old "Activity Indicator" is gone. Deemed unnecessary with the loading animation on the left corner of each tab, where the Favicon appears once the page is fully loaded.

  • Adding address to email address book

Is there a way to add email addresses:
    1. From a previous address book in another mail program (Netscape)?
    2. Without having to actually send an email to someone...or receive an email from them?
When I enter a name/email address into the BCC field, the recipients in the BCC field don't appear on _my own_ sent emails, so I can't add that email address to my address book because I can't SEE it! Mail is very limited in that respect. You apparently have to enter their email address in the TO or CC fields, and not in the BCC field, to be able to click on them and add them to your address book.
Is there _any other way_ to add them to my address book when the email I sent them has them listed in the BCC field? I don't want to list a bunch of people in CC or TO fields just so they will appear on the sent email for me to be able to click on their email address to add them to my address book. That's why I use the BCC field for a list of recipients. It's MY email anyway. Why can't I see them in the BCC field on _my own_ sent emails? It just doesn't make sense to me.
    Thanks!

You need to understand that Address Book is a separate application; in Mail you can view and use the information maintained by the AB app. If you have an email address that you need to type in and will want to re-use, open AB and click the + at the bottom of the columns of names; you will get a blank contact card on which to type in details. If now in Mail you start a new message and start typing the new email or name the auto-fill feature will pull it from AB. From AB, if you click the label beside someone's email address the popup menu will include the option of sending them an email. Alternatively drag the icon for the contact card and drop it on the Mail icon in the dock. Or use the address book viewing features in Mail - you are spoilt for choice.
As for Netscape, if there is any sort of address book export facility it should be possible to do an import into OS X Address Book. Best is if Netscape supports the vCard format.

  • Hierarchical Address Book Access Enumeration?

We are currently looking at the Hierarchical Address Book (HAB) feature for our Exchange 2010 SP3 on-prem deployment. One request was to limit the user/room/resources a user can see in the HAB based on whether the user has permissions to "see"
that resource or not. Bonus points if we can even limit which HAB Organizational parent/child groups they can see.
Is this possible or do we have to stick with Public Folders for this kind of hierarchical browsing?
    Thanks all!

    Hi,
In Exchange 2010, we can use Address Book Policy which administrators can segment users into specific groups to provide customized views of their organization’s GAL to meet your requirement.
When creating an ABP, you assign a GAL, an offline address book (OAB), a room list, and one or more address lists to the policy. You can then assign the ABP to mailbox users, providing them with access to a customized GAL in Outlook and Outlook
Web App. The goal is to provide a simpler mechanism to accomplish GAL segmentation for on-premises organizations that require multiple GALs.
For more information about different scenarios about this deployment, please refer to the following article:

  • Address book and Outlook

I have hundreds of addresses and phone numbers stored in outlook and want to get them converted over to address book as well as my calenders imported into the calendar program. However, I can't seem to get it to work.
I export outlook to a tab and/or comma delimited file and neither imports. Address book says it can't read the file.
Is there a straight forward way to perform this function as after 5 times of going in and selecting fields to export and trying again I'm getting rather frustrated.
Apple should really put for a bit of effort to help with things like this since most of their new customers would be coming from Windows...
    thanks,
    glenn

Why do you have to click on each one with the received message?
If you are using Apple's Mail application, there is a Save button directly below the message header for message attachments which will save all attachments to your location of choice. My instructions included creating a folder to save all attachments. Using the Address Book import feature will import all 300 vCard files at one time.
and the vcard not containing the company information
or notes that are attached to the contacts
Not sure why this wouldn't be included with an Outlook vCard export but it should and not an Apple or Mac problem if it isn't.
There has been plenty of thought about someone converting from Windows over to a Mac but it isn't Apple's fault that MS uses a number of proprietary/closed formats with Outlook's storage format for messages and calendar events being one of them. MS doesn't make it easy to switch from Outlook to another Windows email client.
vCard isn't one of them which was originally proposed in 1995 by the Versit consortium which consisted of Apple Computer, AT&T (later Lucent), IBM and Siemens which MS adopted.

As provided in my previous post, you can purchase O2M for $10 which provides for transferring Outlook messages, calendar events and contacts.

  • Address Book Adds Carriage Return to Street Field on Import

I've been having some fun and games trying to import a large list of addresses in a tab delimited file into the Address Book. After finally managing to sort out all the issues with importing the file, I have now discovered that the value for the Street in all of the imported addresses has a carriage return (\r) character appended to them. There was not a carriage return present in the tab delimited file.
I doublechecked the Address Book entries using Applescript to inspect the final character of the Street field and it was indeed a carriage return.
I presume that this is due to the mapping of fields in the Address Book to the columns in my file. The Address Book allows you to enter 2 values for the Street, yet I am only using the first one with the second one being set to be ignored.
However, the import still adds the carriage return character despite the second Street field not being required. It's not obvious that this is happening when viewing entries in the Address Book, yet when it comes to printing the imported addresses onto labels, a blank line is left due to the empty second Street field.
If I edit the card and amend the Street field to, say, add a comma to the end of the Street or, take it away, the problem disappears. I don't want to manually edit all the imported address of which I have 275. Is there a workaround for this, or some Applescript that will automatically edit all the Street entries to remove the carriage return?
Is anyone else experiencing this? Could this be classified as a bug?
Before someone suggests I use the thirdparty Address Book Importer, I have tried that too and it also results in the same problem.

The blank line appears when looking at the addresses through applications like SOHO Labels and Envelopes or Imprint. The problem is that the carriage return is added by the Address Book as it is being imported, rather than the carriage return being there already, so loading the tab delimited file into a spreadsheet will not show any carriage return characters.
In the end I cooked up some Applescript to go through the Address Book and strip out any trailing carriage returns from the Street field for all addresses. I'm no Applescript guru, but the following seemed to do the trick:
    tell application "Address Book"
    set thePeople to every person
    repeat with thePerson in thePeople
set theAddresses to every address of thePerson
    repeat with theAddress in theAddresses
set streetinfo to street of theAddress
if streetinfo ends with "\r" then
set streetinfo2 to (text of characters 1 thru -2 of (streetinfo as string) as string)
set street of theAddress to streetinfo2
    end if
    end repeat
    end repeat
    save addressbook
    end tell
The other alternative was to write a script to parse my file in something like Ruby and then use Applescript to add the records rather than use the Address Book import feature. That would probably have given me some flexibility with being able to add multi-line notes, but the above was quicker to hack together.

  • Help transferring from Outlook to Address Book

My husband is working on a Mac in a PC office. Outlook addresses are stored on a network. Not on his computer. He's trying to import the addresses into Apple's Address Book. Apparently he can't export the addresses since they are on the server. He thinks he needs to export from Outlook, then import with Address Book. Any Window's people out there have any idea how to fix this issue?
    Thanks

Have someone else in the office who is using Windows Outlook select "Contacts" in Outlook.
At the menu bar, go to Edit and Select All to select/highlight all contacts (shouldn't matter if the contacts are stored on the server or locally) and at the menu bar, go to Actions and select Forward as vCard.
This will open a new message with each contact added as separate vCard attachment to the message.
Send the message to an email account that your husband accesses on the Mac.
Save the vCard attachments to a folder created on the Desktop or the location of choice and use the Address Book import feature selecting vCards as the import type.

  • Sync iPhone contacts to Address Book

Can anyone tell me how to take the contacts from my iPhone and store them in my address book. I never typed my contacts in my address book, and instead of syncing Address Book to iPhone.....I want to do the reverse!
Also, is my contacts already stored on my computer under the backup of my iPhone? If I was to purchase another iPhone, would I just load my contacts that way.....from the backup??
    Thanks!

The Revert to Address Book Backup feature opens a backup file created by the Address Book backup feature only.
I'm not sure if any of these files can be used to restore the data but I've got something for you to try.
Why do the the contacts get erased from the iPhone if the computer's address book is empty? Is this a feature or a bug? Seems like a bug.
I don't believe this is a bug - kind of like which was last changed prior to the sync process - in this case if was your Address Book database on your Mac. If there had been at least one contact available on the Address Book on your Mac, I don't believe this would have occurred but since it was empty and the last changed all contacts were lost on the iPhone.
With the Address Book application quit on your Mac, move the recovered AddressBook.data.previous file from the backup drive to the Desktop. Change the name of this file to AddressBook.data or remove .previous from the file name.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Application Support > AddressBook. Move the AddressBook.data file from the Desktop within the AddressBook folder. This will replace the existing AddressBook.data file which is empty.
Cross your finger and then launch the Address Book application to see if most or all of your Address Book contacts were restored.
