Address book predictive typing is...um..."slow"?

Is there a way to edit the addresses that Mail has memorized, and possibly delete or at least re-prioritize them? Example: There are several people named "Phil" in my address book, and probably the last 30 times I've typed it I meant my father. But every single time the default suggestion is a former colleague of mine from a job 3 years ago.
Does Mail make any attempt to guess the most likely match? How does it decide which one to suggest? Can I tell it to do something different?

you can delete obsolete emails from the previous recipients list. it's available in mail from window menu->previous recipients. but that will only get rid of emails that are not in your address book. there is nothing you can do to tell Mail to offer one email before another one.

  • Address book-predictive typing?

The old address book versions would predict the entries; city or state or names. The OS 10 version doesn't seem to do a whole lot. Am I missing some preference settings?

Actually, Address Book has an interesting bug. In the Edit it mode, deleted lines will reappear if clicking to different app. All the previous editing is lost and must be redone.
Not a lot of effort was put into this system app.

  • Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

My old e-mail address is going to be discontinued and I need to notify everyone in my Mozilla Thunderbird address book. Is there a way to send an e-mail to everyone in my address book WITHOUT typing/selecting each address in individually?

    Bonjour zmerill
Yes it is possible and simple to do.
    - In the compose window of TB, display the address books on the left
    - select the adress book you want
    - select normally the first contact (left click)
    - while pressing a shift key, select the last contact (--> all selected)
    - just under the last contact, use the button you want.
In an address book it is also possible to create a mailing list.

  • Address Book 3.1.2 excruciatingly slow

    Hello,
I recently imported about 150 vcards into AB 3.1.2. Address book has always been slow but now it is extremely slow and I get the spinning rainbow wheel of horror. When I edit records and tab from one field to the next, it takes 10-15 seconds to go from one field to the other.

I got vcard creator from www.macalerts.com.au and it worked, however address book is very, very quirky and s l o w!!!!

  • Why is it that I can no longer access all of the people in my address book by typing their names in the address line of an email?

Until the last month or so I have always been able to type the first few letters of a persons name in the email address bar and his address would be entered. Now this only happens for those people that I have contacted recently. The really big problem is my group that contains 40+ people. I use it only once a month and do not want to type 40+ addresses.

I think that may be a javascript issue.
In Firefox 23, as part of an effort to simplify the Firefox options set and protect users from unintentially damaging their Firefox, the option to disable JavaScript was removed from the Firefox Options window.
However, the option to disable JavaScript was not removed from Firefox entirely. You can still access it from about:config or by installing an add-on.
    '''about:config'''
    # In the address bar, type "about:config" (with no quotes), and press Enter.
    # Click "I'll be careful, I promise"
    # In the search bar, search for "javascript.enabled" (with no quotes).
    # Right click the result named "javascript.enabled" and click "Toggle". JavaScript is now disabled.
To Re-enable JavaScript, repeat these steps.
    '''Add-ons'''
You can alternatively install an add-on that lets you disable JavaScript, such as
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/noscript/ No-Script] (to disable JavaScript on a per page basis, as required)
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/quickjava/ QuickJava] (to easily disable and enable JavaScript, automatic loading of images, and other content)
*[https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/settingsanity/ SettingSanity] (adds back removed options for JavaScript, Advanced JavaScript Settings, loading images, and showing the Tab Bar)
Thank you and I hope this helps!

  • How do I save a sender's email address to my address book without typing it in manually?

I used to be able to right click and save an address to my contacts with my old email program, but I can't figure out how to do it with TB.

You simply click the star right next to the sender's email address in the message header. This files the address to your Personal Addressbook and the star turns yellow.
You can click the star again to edit the contact.

  • Slow predictive typing in Address Book

When I type a name in the search window of Address Book, the letters are very slow to appear and the find is delayed; however, if a name is pasted in the find is very fast.
When left deleting letters in a name the deletion slows down, especially when approaching the first two or three letters, but when the whole name is selected and deleted there is no delay.
This seems to be problem with predictive typing, if so, does anyone have an idea about how it might be cured?

I'd start by doing a shift-login; i.e., hold down the shift key just after you enter your login password and keep holding it until the desktop appears. That prevents your login items from loading.
Then try moving your AB database in
    Library/Application Support/AddressBook
out of the way and creating a new one. If that isn't it, try the preference files,
    Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
Then there are various cache files you can delete.

  • Imported Address Book not linking - when typing, results are red

    OS - Windows Vista
    Thunderbird Version 24.6.6
Issue: Address book was imported into Mozilla from Windows Live Mail 2006. When trying to send an email, even though the contacts are listed in the address book, when typing them out in a new email, they are still flashing up in red.
Troubleshooting performed: Composed new mail, typed out email manually - this added to address book. There were four copies of the address book listed, deleted the duplicates and migrated the addresses from the imported book to Personal Address Book. Still not working. Opened Address book and selected contact, attempted to compose mail to selected contact, failed. Checked Address Book entries - found that the entries didn't import properly into the following fields:
First, Last, Email - rather they got imported as Display Name, Nickname (with nickname being the email address)
Solution: Went into each contact, and modified them by moving the 'nickname' (which contained the email address) to the 'email address' field. Now able to send emails through to the contact.
    Questions:
    1) When importing the Address from Windows Live Mail - how can we stop it from importing/mapping the email address field into the nickname field?
    2) Is there a faster way to update all the contacts to copy across from Nickname field to the Email field?
    Thanks,
    Angela

If you import via CSV fie, you should be shown a dialog that asks you to re-sort address book fields so the fields in the imported address book correspond with those in Thunderbird's Address Book.
    Did this not happen?
See "From somewhere else to Thunderbird:" here:
    http://www.ramsden.org.uk/11_Thunderbird_Settings_and_the_Profile.html
I don't know of any easy way to work directly with the address book file itself; it's not organized in a user-friendly manner internally. These matters are usually best addressed either before importing (i.e. tweak the CSV file in a spreadsheet program) or via the import dialog.
Alternative formats such as vcf or vCard may avoid the need to massage the data, but IMHO are less suited to managing address books. If you can use these formats, this add-on can be useful:

  • Address Book Wish List Additions???

As a long time Mac user I find Address Book extremely lame in that it lacks many helpful usability features that were standard in older third party contact managers. Ever since Now-Up-to-Date bought out and stupidly extinguished Touchbase/Datebook, Macheads have had to put up with less than optimal address book solutions. In the hope that Apple's AB developers peruse this forum once in a while, I'd like to start a wish list of features I'd like to see in a future version...please copy, append and post your suggestions to this list as well.
    1. Selectable auto-capitalization with manual field override when in auto-cap mode.
    2. Selectable auto-fill with manual field override
    3. Ability to query contact database and to mark, unmark, select, sort, total and display contacts in printable listings. I still use my dinosaur Touchbase program in Classic to perform marketing studies on my business's house list. TB provides an elegant usability model.
    4. Ability to save and edit custom list formats.
    5. Selectable Alpha-tab A-Z index at top of contact window.
    6. Ability to auto-dial numbers from contact window or menu bar.
    7. Integration with Text Edit or ??? to create auto-letters.

    Here's my 2 cents worth:
Allow users of Address Book to --
    1. Auto select an address from Address Book by typing in a nickname associated with an Address Card. (i.e. "mom" or "gramps").
    2. Set a preferred or default email address for cards in your "ALL" group, just like you can when you select "Edit Distribution List…" from the EDIT menu on a particular distribution group. (Kind of like how you set Favorites on the iPhone in the Phone application)

  • Adding Two Addresses From One Record in an Address Book Group

I have a Group in Address Book to which I send a weekly newsletter.  People here in the community were kind enough to tell me how to edit the group and choose which email -- some want their "home" email, others prefer I use "work" -- from individual records I use.
    Now ...
One of the recipients would like me to send to both his home and his work email.
When I right click on the group and go into "Edit Distribution List ..." I see the record and the various emails for each person with the bold email address being the one Mail picks up.  But it seems I can only choose one email per record.
Any ideas how to get my Group to house (and let me email to) both the work and the home emails for the same person?
    I'm using Address Book 5.0.3 (883) and Mail 4.5 (1084) with OS X 10.6.8
    Thanks

Rather than dragging the card in from the Address Book, start typing the person's name. Mail will give you a pop-up menu on choices. Pick one. Then repeat and pick the other. This is less convenient if you want to put someone in a group and send to both addresses in the group... in that case, V.K.'s solution is the best you'll do.

  • Address Book Wish List!

Unless it's already possible, anybody know if Apple ever plans on updating "Address Book" to enable the user to password protect an address book and to have multiple address books.... Having multiple sign-ins is not really a solution.

  • Address book search damaged?

when i try and search on my address book after typing in the first two letters the beachball comes on for minutes, also spotlight is having trouble as well - and most of my other search tools. What's going on?

    Hi there,
How much free space is on your Hard Drive?
    I'd start with this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go... if it takes way too long, then you must find another way to repair your HDD first, like DiskWarrior, or Drive Genius).
Then try Spotless to repair/restart Spotlight...

  • Address Book and iCloud

I am using OS 10.7.4. How do I get the data from my Address Book into iCloud contacts?

Roger emailed me, but I've only just seen it and note that Roger seems to have answered your question.
One thing I might add is that if you are going to keep your 'On My Mac' group' as a duplicate of your 'iCloud' group to facilitate keeping an identical contact list on your pre iOS 5 devices, you may find the simplest way to do this is simply copy the whole bunch of contacts from iCloud to On My Mac every now and again, this should save painstaking searching to identify new contacts and copy them across individually.
    To do this:
Go to the groups (Either from the view menu, hitting the tag at the top of address book or typing cmd+3)
    Select 'All iCloud'
Ensure the search field is empty
Select the first contact in the list
Shift-select the last contact in the list (This should select every contact)
Drag all the contacts to the 'All on my Mac' group
Select 'import' from the dialogue box that appears
This will not end up with duplicate contacts within the same group, if you add any new contacts using your pre iOS 5 devices, you can copy in the same way from 'On My Mac' to 'iCloud'.
Take a little time to see how choosing groups in the group section affects how your contacts are displayed in Address Book, to avoid working with the wrong groups.

  • Address Book/Mail: sending to two addresses from one contact in a group

I would like to send an e-mail to two addresses from address book, but it is only one contact/family name. It seems it only lets you pick one for a group. Does anyone know how to pick multiple e-mail address for one contact name/family in a group so I don't have to manually look up each name?

How do I transfer my existing Address book to an iCloud address book without typing them all out again?

Before trying to answer your question, I note your profile states you are using OS X 10.5.8. You can't use iCloud on your mac unless you have OS X 10.7.2 or better. Can you confirm which OS you are using.
