Address book - printing group address letter using only business address
I have a group that has business and home addresses for each person. I want to print mailing labels with just the business addresses. I went to address help and it told me to choose edit > edit distribution list. Now comes the problem. When I am in address book and click on edit the edit distribution list is always grey so I can't select it. What do I need to do so that it is selectable or is there another way to have it only print the business addresses instead of two labels for each person (one business address and one personal address)?

I wound up deleting this group so that when I synced from desktop to laptop, I wouldn't be sending the corrupted address. But since they are all still in the All listing, I will check them out one by one and see what the particular problem was. I suspect it was an address that included a suite or apartment number and was just two long for the template.

Address Book smart groups - can't use job title in criteria?
Trying to create a smart group in Address Book. One of the search criteria I want to use is based on information I am entering into the Job Title field. However, the Job Title field is not one of the options that is available in the drop down menu. I'm using the Job Title menu on at least 12 of the cards in my address book.
Suggestions?sorry, what you see in the smart group parameters is what you get. as something of a workaround you can copy the job titles into the Note filed and use that in the smart group.

Mail & Address Book - Do I have to use AB?
I currently use Thunderbird for my email client. At present it does not work with Snow Leopard. In looking at Mail, it appears that it uses the Address Book app for its address book. Questions:
1 - My Thunderbird address book is quite large and contains ONLY email addresses. I don't use it for phone numbers, etc. Can I import it into Mail.
2 - I use Address Book for addresses and phone numbers, NOT email. Do I need to "link" Address Book into Mail or can I unlink it?
This may seem atypical but I prefer to not have email and addresses/phone numbers integrated.
ThanksCan you export your Thunderbird address book as a vcf card? That is, select all cards, and drag them all to the desktop, or export to the desktop, as a single "mega-VCF" card? If so, then double clicking on that single vcf file should import all into the Address Book application. Fields that do not have data entries in Thunderbird will be left blank in the Apple Address Book.
You may run into an issue with duplicate cards of the same proper name if you are using proper name on the cards. But if, for example, you use proper names on the address/phone set, and email addresses only (no proper names), you should be able to avoid that problem. You could then create groups within Address Book to make a distinction between them. Maybe, once each card was associated with a group, you could maintain proper name on both, since they should be distinguished by group affiliation. But I am not sure on that; that is something that you would have to experiment with. -
I have several groups on my Mac Address Book and would like to sync only one group to each IOS5 device (each device getting a different group) via iCloud. Is this possible? If so, how is it done?

how can I send an email to a group in my address book, but hide the individual names and email addresses?
You used to be able to do this through leaving unchecked the box in preferences "when sending to a group show all member addresses". However, that feature failed some time ago (two or three years?) and the only way to hide the addresses now is to put the group in the BCC field.

Address Book printing completely broken
I cannot print at all from Address Book. I am trying to print labels on an iMac G5 with 10.5.8. Here's what happens:
I have a group with about 25 contacts selected in the left column, then choose File>Print. (Often the first time I choose print it does nothing, so I choose print again.) When the print dialog opens, the preview is blank and underneath it says "Sorting..." but never seems to stop. If I then choose the "Layout" tab and click on any of the drop-down menus, the addresses show up in the preview, but "Sorting..." never goes away. The number of addresses reported and previewed in the print dialog is seemingly random (11 or 13 or 22 of the actual 25).
At this point, if I click "Print," the Address Book print settings disappear from the dialog and nothing happens. If I press cancel, either the same thing happens or the whole app crashes. Print to pdf doesn't work either.
I tried printing from a MacBook that is synced to my iMac with MobileMe, but got the same results. I also reinstalled the 10.5.8 combo update and repaired permissions.Okay, the one test I didn't try before posting turned out to be the answer. The group included some contacts that did not have complete addresses. I didn't realize how badly that would screw things up. After selecting only the contacts with complete addresses everything worked as expected.

Address Book Smart Groups and Custom Fields
Anyone have issues syncing Smart Groups in Address Book? Seems like an awful waste of resources if we cannot keep that synced between MobileMe, our Mac/PC and iPhone.
Also, same issue with custom fields I've created for certain contacts. For example, I've created hours of operation for certain businesses. These fields sync into my contacts in MobileMe but it's not pushed to my iPhone. Again, such a waste to have information that cannot be maintained.I have been advised by the .Mac team that Address Book Smart Groups cannot be synched between two (or more) computers using .Mac

I used to be able to copy or drag and drop links from the address window. Now with the update, only the address is copied or dragged not the link. (Says something about not giving site information). I want to be able to drag and drop or copy links.To be more precise, you can setup a JComponent or JPanel on top of your JavaFX nodes that has a TransferHandler that can convert the (AWT/Swing) images dragged to the app to JavaFX image and then insert it into the underlying node.
As for the file chooser itselft: ListView and the JavaFX composer can allow you to create one quite easily. TreeView can aslso be used to a lesser extend (still a big buggy). For both of these, there are small bugs in the Cell API that may (or may not) prevent from displaying a proper thumbnail in the cells.
You can also use a regular JFileChooser if you do not mind the dialog box having a different LnF from the rest of your application. -
Uwc address book problems (groups)
I downloaded and installed communications suite 5. As I was playing around with it (trying to get a better handle on the changes from what we have today), I discovered an oddity with the address book and groups in the "cooperate directory". I wonder if anyone else has noticed this as well as if anyone knows of any patches for commsuite 5.
Details:
when I expend a group from from the cooperate directory, the members do not appear (though they do appear in a group I manually assemble in my personal address book). The little icon simply just changes directions no matter if members appear when the group name is clicked on or not.
Another oddity is that if people are associated with groups (in the directory) via "mgrpRFC822MailMember" attributes, they also do not show up as members of the group (when the group name is clicked on). Though, members which are associated via "uniqueMember" do appear in the member list.
This is a schema 1 directory which works well with our. I am unsure if these are incompatibilities with schema 1 vs schema 2 or if these are bugs in the product. Anyone have any insight?

report? How would I go about reading the bug report?Correct. As for reading the bug report itself I don't think you can read this from outside of Sun. I read through it myself and it definitely reads as the same issue, in this case though it affects 6.2 and is fixed in the next point releases:

I recommend if you have a support contract that you log a support case via http://www.sun.com/service/online/ That way when the patches for 6.3 come out you will get them first.

the same patch level?There aren't any patches yet available - so if you are running the GA release (and there is no reason to think you are not, then chances are you are running the same patch level).

Hi, I made a mistake by allowing facebook to download all my contacts in my address book. Now i need to clean my address book and keep only my original contacts. If i do it on my macbook, will it reflect on my iphone? Or will my iphone redownload all the contacts i deleted when i connect it to my macbook or through the cloud?
when working with icloud, is there a primary device (macbok, ipad...) on which if the changes are made, they reflect on all other devices?I see. If you are syncing contacts with iCloud on both your Mac and your iPhone, deleting a contact from either device will delete them from icloud.com and all other devices.
What's really going on with iCloud is that your contacts actually reside on the iCloud server. Your Mac and iPhone are merely reading the current contact list as it exists on the server. When you delete a contact (or make any other change) on either device, you are making these changes on the server. As a result, all other devices "syncing" contacts with the same iCloud account will read this change. When you log onto icloud.com, you are viewing the server from your browser. -
Mail Group addresses not the same as Address Book contact group addresses.
A group in my Address Book does not show up in my Mail address book the same. The Mail addresses for my group includes ALL my contacts. How do we fix this problem? I am afraid to send a group e-mail in case it goes to everyone else in my address book. We set up the group in the address book via drag and drop.
That's what I thought.... Although when I log on to Mobile Me through the internet the sender's name there appears just like it does in my address book, so I thought there would be a way to set it in mail.

i use macbook and lion os 10.7.2.
I want to sync gmail contact with address book.
For this i goto preference in address book and select "sync with google".
I put my gmail details.
However, the sync does not happen.
Please help.You should have signed in with that address in the first place, but there is a workaround: go to System preferences>Mail, Contacts@ Calendars and add your @me.com address as an account there.

If not, copy the AddressBook folder from your username/Library/Application Support/ folder on the old mac (or backup).
Copy it to the same location on your new Mac, replacing the one that is there. Start Address Book in Mountain Lion and it should convert the files to the correct format.
If you do have addresses, it is a little more complicated.
First, create a Contacts Archive (from File>Export menu). This will be your backup.
Next, export the current contacts as vCards.
Then, follow the steps above.
Then, import all the cards you exported. If you select all and double-click, it will ask if you want to add them. You'll then have to add them to whatever groups you had set up. -
