Address Book quirky search behavior in Snow Leopard vs. reg. Leopard?

Address Book in 10.5.8 Leopard always allowed quick location of an entry by typing the first few characters of the last name. Gets me the precise name or close to it. AB in Snow L. doesn't do the same. In SL when typing same first 3-4 characters, AB finds a matching first name. Not what I want! Did Apple change that feature, or do I have a problem? I have several machines, some w. 10.5.8, a new one with 10.6.3. Addition of new Snow Leopard also messes up MobileMe sync of Contacts between the different computers (always resetting data on the MBP 10.6.3) The courtesy of your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,
I'm having exactly the same problem.
The search now works on the last name only if it is displayed before the first name, which was not the behavior before Snow Leopard.
Thank you for your help ...

  • Mail and address book problems after updating to snow leopard

Hello, I recently installed snow leopard on a an imac running os10.2. The installation process stalled and I called Apple and spoke to someone who had me shut down the machine and start again. The second attempt worked but when I first opened Mail there were no messages all mailboxes were empty and I was unable to send messages. I tried "rebuild" and nothing happened at first but on a later restart the messages finally showed up and the program worked normally. OK. But now I find that of my hundreds of contacts in "Address Book" only a few of them remain. "Address Book" doesn't have a rebuild command. "Help" says to look for the particular folder from the old system and copy it to the new but I can only locate that folder in the new system. None of the old system is there, and why should it be? I wouldn't want the old system software taking up all that space when it isn't needed.
Does anyone know how I might recover those contacts?
thank you for your kind attention,
    Julian

    Hi,
I'm sorry that number was from memory. I checked the disk that came with the computer and I find that it was version 10.4.1

  • Address Book Doesn't Work in Snow Leopard

I recently downloaded Snow Leopard, and now my Address Book won't open. I'll click on the icon and this message pops up: "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.2." I can still access all my contacts via Mail, but I cannot add or delete contacts. What should I do?

I'm not sure what you mean by you "downloaded Snow Leopard" as it cannot be downloaded. I'm guessing you mean that you installed it, or you downloaded and installed an update for it.
If you moved the original application out of the Applications folder, it will not get updated when you run the upgrade/install. Make sure it is in the Address Book. A couple things to try:
    1) Try installing 10.6 again.
    2) Download the 10.6.3 combo updater and install it--Make sure Address Book is still in the Applications folder when you install it.

  • Address Book won't open in Snow Leopard

    Hi,
    I have Snow Leopard 10.6.1
When I try opening my address book I get the message: "You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. You have Address Book 4.1.1."
    How can this be?
This is not quite an emergency since I still have access to my address book through Mobile Me, or my Entourage address book, but still.
    Anybody understand this issue?
    Thanks

Hey guys I had the exact same problem as you did and didn't find the fix until opening the Guest Account wiped my entire profile. (seen in the Login forum)
From what I can tell, you need to make a new user account for the Contacts application to work, as it replaces it with a new version (5.0), if you don't want to copy over all your files to a new account you could try copying over Contacts 5.0 to your other users Documents folder, then copying it from there to the Applications folder on your old user.
    Hope I've helped

  • Lost all Address Book info upon upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mavericks.

Contacts is empty. I did a Carbon Copy Clone before upgrading so I have the abcddb file, but not sure what to do with it to get the info into Contacts. Thanks for any input.

Any ideas how to input Address Book (Snow Leopard) into Contacts (Mavericks)?
    Thanks for any help.

  • ICal and Address book will not print using Snow Leopard

I have had several issues resulting in my having to re-install Snow Leopard several times. Currently all the issues are resolved, but now I have a new issue. The printer and PDF functions will not work. I dread having to reinstall Snow Leopard AGAIN. What is the deal?

This issue was resolved, thanks to a call to Apple Care support. Simply uninstalling and then reinstalling the printer driver fixed the problem. This may be necessary after another printer driver update.

  • Old address book will not open in Snow Leopard

After upgrading to SL, attempting to access AB in the dock brings up the message "This version of Address Book will not open in this operating system. You have Address Book version 4.1.2". Querying Apple Support brought suggestions from reinstalling just Address Book to utilizing Time Machine. Solution was incredibly simple.
When upgrading to SL, the OS upgraded AB...but only in Applications. If you're getting this message, go to Applications and click on AB there. If it opens, just delete AB in the Dock, then transfer the new, updated AB to the dock, and you're all set.

Somehow you've retained an old version of Addressbook (version 5.0.3).  The current version is 6.1
Look in the apps folder to see if you have the current version, the dock icon may be pointing to the old version.

  • Address Book wildcard searching LDAP

With Address Book under Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), and 10.5 (Leopard) it was possible to do a wildcard search of an LDAP server for contacts. You did this by typing *. or ** in the search box in the top right.
Unfortunately, this no longer seems to work in Address Book in Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
Does anyone know of an alternative way of doing this?

Do you use iCloud? If so, try going to the System Preferences then iCloud and unchecking Contacts. It will warn you about deleting the contacts from your Mac. If you know your other devices on iCloud have the correct contacts(or icloud.com) then this should be completely safe. Once you've okayed them to be removed, immediately recheck contacts.
Please let me know if this works. Thanks!

  • HT2486 Address Book Spotlight search reset

How can I reset the Spotlight search for my address book (Search not working)

Try the steps I posted here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3222240
Note that with iCloud (and I guess any other source) there is a Sources folder inside of the AddressBook folder. It has the same indexing databases. At this point, I don't know of you would need to remove those, also. When you throw away the iCloud one, it will take a few moments for the iCloud contacts to reindex.

  • Address book frozen; search function lost

I am running Mac OSX Lion 10.7.3 on a Mac Mini. My Adress Book stopped allowing me to use the search bar at the top of the screen to search on any data in the address book. I can only scroll down and up on the screen and then double-click on the record I want to view to open it. What happened and how can I fix it?
    Thanks!

Hmmm, reboot to the Restore Partition holding CMD+r at bootup, try using Disk Utility to repair the drive... does it report any errors?

  • Weird Address Book enrty Find behavior

Yet another oddity I just noticed with the Finder version of Spotlight:
I type the first name of my sister into the main Finder window Spotlight search field. The results show, among others, her entry in Address Book. In the default group view of the results, this initially shows up listed by her full name. However, if I do any of the following, it changes to the metadata cache name, the one with a long string of hex numbers & the "/ABPerson.abcdp" suffix:
    •Scroll the window
•Change from group to icon or list view
    •Select her name
•Switch to any application or any other Finder window
Even odder, if I click the "Repeat Search" curved arrow button, the results revert to the full name listing ... usually.
    Anybody see anything like this?

    anyone?

  • IP Address Conflicts - iMac and Airport Express, Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion

In our home we have an iMac, two Mac notebooks, an iPad, an Apple TV and a Sony Playstation that all use wi-fi.  I have a recurring problem.  When several devices are connected to the Internet through Airport Extreme (wi-fi) downloads really slow down.  Since the Airport Extreme is connected directly to a Motorola cable modem that also has wi-fi, I often shift my iMac wi-fi connection to the Motorola cable modem to speed up the Internet. Lately I have been getting an IP address conflict message in a pop-up box when I shift to the cable modem wi-fi. The system preference shows the IP address automatically assigned via DCHP.  It also offers the option of DHCP plus manual.
I am now using Snow Leopard and intend to upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How can I resolve the conflict?  Or, should I consider some other wifi network configuration?  Is the upgrade to Mountain Lion likely to resolve the problem or make it worse?  Can I use the DHCP plus manual to manually assign an IP address to the iMac to resolve the IP address conflict, and, if so, what it the procedure?

Is the DHCP assignment being done by your cable modem or your AirPort Extreme?
What is the exact text of the conlict message, and where does it pop up?
If your cable modem and your AirPort Extreme are both running DHCP servers for the same subnet (which they really should not be allowed to do), they must be set to assign addresses from disjoint pools.

  • Changing How Address Book Displays Search Results

When I use Search in Address Book the result everytime shows as the bottom item in the resulting list with extraneous items above it. It seems to me that the items below the first result are more pertinent to my search, but they aren't displayed, I have to scroll down to see them. Is there a way to change that so that the top item is my first result and the items below it appear?
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

That's an interesting question, so I tried it myself.
I found that all of the cards listed contained the search term, as expected, but the term was not necessarily in the name. So there seems to be no weighting given to the location of the search term (eg Finding it in the Notes could be less important than in the name). I can't disagree with this strategy.
Secondly, the found set of cards are listed in the normal order I'd defined in the preferences 'Sort by' option, again just as expected.
So the question returns as to why the result chooses the particular card it does. And the answer seems to be that the chosen card is the last one with the most matches.
I searched for St, and got many matchiing cards, and the chosen one had 3 occurences. I looked through the list, and there were a few other cards with 3 occurences of the match, but none with 4 occurences. So the chosen card was the last one with the most matches.
I then chose a card without a match and added some notes which had 4 occurences, and the following search for St then picked that card.
So you're actually getting what you have asked for (the last of the best matches). Its just unfortunate that generally the card you want is not the one with most matches.
