Address Book Reverts

Address Book adds back dele3ed names. I make a new card, changing the name, and delete the old card. Later, the old name returns. Maybe this occurs when I Hot Sync with my Treo. Where could these be stored and why are they returning?

  • Problems with Reverting to an Address Book Backup

I keep my address book updated on my iMac at home that is running OS v10.6 Snow Leopard. At work, I am now using a G5 that is running OS v10.4 Tiger. I have created a +Backup of my Address Book+ at home and brought the .abbu file with me to work so that I could +Revert to an Address Book Backup+ on my G5.
I've done it twice already and I'm still missing vCards (mostly recently added). Also, some of the other vCards have old information. Is there something I'm not doing right? If the solution is to highlight all vCards and +Export vCard...+ then what is the point of +Back up Address Book...+

    Dear Pat,
Thank you. I have received the exact same reply from Amreso.
I thank you both for your replies. If the problem occurs again, I shall follow your advice.
I just need to pluck up the courage. I get so nervous with the computer when it plays up.
    Regards
    Anthony

Is there a way to recover old emails? I moved a few folders around on the hard disk and now my emails have reverted to Factory settings and all my old emails and address book have vanished. I am still running on 10.4.11 and Apple can not help me. Does anyone out there have any idea on how to recover my lost emails and/or addresses?

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

  • I cannot revert to address book backup

Clean installed Leapord last night, I backup the user home folder, how do I revert the address book contact, I can't seem to find it anywhere.

The address book data are all in a folder,
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
    where
    ~ is your home directory.

  • Problem reverting to backup/address book archive

I created an address book archive on my home computer (desktop), transferred that backup file to my laptop, and tried to revert my address book on the laptop to the new backup file. it doesn't work. I'm using OS 10.5.7 on the desktop, and 10.4.11 on the laptop... is that why the backup won't install on the laptop? do they need to be the same OS? I have the same problem with my ical backup. My ical and address books are up to date on my desktop computer, and I really want to put all that info on my laptop as well. is there another way to go about this? please help, thanks!

    Greetings,
If memory serves me, Address Book for Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5 are different versions, so you can't overwrite one with a backup from the other. If you want to get the contacts from the 10.5 version into the version for 10.4 on your laptop, you would need to open Address Book on your Desktop, select the All group and drag it to your Desktop to create one vCard with all your contacts in it.
Then you can transfer it to the laptop, launch Address Book on it, then drag & drop the vCard onto Address Book to import those contacts.

  • Address Book Note Field reverts back any edits I make

I have been a long time Apple user and Address Book. I have noticed something peculiar happening with my contact notes in Address Book. Changes that I make to the note field, by either deleting or adding information will revert back to previous record before my edit. This does not appear to happen to all contacts but definitely is happening on multiple contacts and I have no idea as to why.
The only way I have found to fix this problem is to make a vcard of the contact onto my desktop. Then delete the contact and reimport the vcard, this seems to fix the problem, but I have close to 4000 contacts and it is a random thing. Please help if you have any suggestions.
    David

thx for the quick response VK
I sync with an iPhone but not mobile me.
I corrected 25 sync conflicts a few moments ago but that did not help the situation
I rebooted and ran a few YASU scripts... that did not help either
I removed pref files and still have the same bug rearing its ugly head in the notes field
I rebuilt the AB DB and... the bug is still occurring
    interesting news is that:
I added a new record and the bug did not occur!
I copied one of the offending records and then edited the copy by deleting the first 3 lines of notes.. this resulted in the same bug (the first 3 lines reappeared)
I then clicked the EDIT button and replaced the first 3 lines of notes with text
and the change was saved... this worked.
Then I deleted the offending record and checked back with the copy that I just created... it was fine
the issue is that when I edit an existing record, I will have no assurance that my edit is saved after I leave that record and continue to another one...
    hope you have some ideas
so that I can trust AB once again
    thanks..
    what next?

  • Address book contacts revert after edit

This is a minor problem, but a frustrating one. There are certain people in my address book for whom I only want a first name listed but previously had a last name in the contact. After deleting the last name, the contact stays as I desire for a while, then reverts back to the full name. Similarly my contact for "Mom" keeps adding my mom's last name to the contact. So it will say for example "Mom Smith". How do I stop this? Thanks!

For the last few daze, I've been unable to add or edit contacts. Almost all the menu options are grayed.
I've checked the permissions in get info and I'm set for read/write. However, I don't doubt that my system permissions are toast. Disk Utility has been giving me eight or so permission errors it can't fix since I upgrade to 10.5. I ran DiskWarrior and it fixed a ton of stuff. Then I used Disk Utility and it gave me more permission errors than ever. It fixed them all ... except the eight original ones.
I'm using an iMac Late 2006.

  • How to revert to yesterday's Address Book Back up?

I have deleted some contacts in error. I have multiple backups from Time Machine and want to revert to an Address Book from yesterday. Each time I try to open Address Book from a back up it appears to have been updated to the subsequent changes.
Where is the actual Address Book file stored and what is it named?
    Thanks.

while TM is integrated with address book and, as Kappy mentioned, you can restore individual contacts directly from TM interface while in address book this feature is extremely buggy. it's best to restore the address book database from finder. quit Address book and restore the whole folder home directory/library/application support/address book.

  • How to revert to Classic view in Address Book?

I tried to use it, but this NEW look of Address Book in LION is just a worthless pile of junk!
Not only is fake book look out of place and a ridiculous addition to a MODERN OS, but I'm also getting sick of the new trend to hide info that was once easy to see with no extraneous need for interaction.
This new 2 column view is full of new extra mouse clicks.
I want the old CLEAN CLASSIC 3 COLUMN VIEW back!!
I want to see "Groups", "Names" and "Individual" info all at the same times!

The 10.8 Beta is under NDA, which is why I did not want to get more specific. I am one of the testers and can assure Address Book salvation there. But I still think it should be fixed in 10.7 as well…

  • I had to revert my PC to factory settings. I have a recovery folder. How do I get my address book and mail folders back?

I had a serious system problem on my PC and had to restore it to its factory configuration. During the process, I was prompted by Windows to create a recovery folder on an external device. I have mostly recovered from my disaster. I have reinstalled Thunderbird, but it does not see my old email folders or my address book. How can I get them back?

Do you have a backup of your files from the computer before you reinstalled? Otherwise this won't be possible

  • Address Book/iSync - email addresses moving to phone number fields

I'm not sure what is causing this, but I'm noticing that email addresses in my cards are moving to phone number fields. I originally thought this had something to do with cards that had no phone number in them, only an email address, but now I"m realizing that's not the case.
I fixes all cards last night and just a minute ago, when I was in Address Book I noticed some or all of the email addresses had moved again. I reverted to my backup from last night and it fixed things, but I'm wondering what's going to cause those addresses to move again.
I do use iSync to sync my AB contacts to my Motorola phone (I think I have it set up where it's one way, computer to phone) and I have Entourage that's using my AB contacts to populate its address book.
Any thoughts about what in my environment is causing this?
    -John

Thank you for the suggestion. I did this, but noticed that some cards were still messed up. So I reverted back to a clean copy of my address book from last night. Then I went to iSync and synchronized with my Motorola phone. That's when iSync says that it's going to modify over 5% of my contacts in AB (122) at which point I said okay. Problem appears to be that the cards it modifies is random.
Now to make matters worse, it appears that if I repeat this process over and over (revert, iSync, look through cards), there is no pattern to which cards are changing. I don't even know how to troubleshoot this. I'd love make iSync go one way - computer to phone - so that the phone can never write information to the computer. Is that possible?
I'm sure this needs to go to a different section...

  • Address Book importing Mac to Mac

I need some help with moving (really just copying) my address book from one mac to another. I don't know where to start...but, I think moving a .plist file would do it, but I have no idea where to find that file.
Also, a bit off topic in this forum, but how do I do the same with Safari bookmarks?
    Thanks.

At the Address Book menu bar on the Mac to be transferred from, go to File and select Back up Address Book.
The default name for the backup file is Address Book - (and the date).
On the Mac to be transferred to, at the Address Book menu bar go to File and select Revert to Address Book Backup selecting the Address Book backup file created on the other Mac.
Regarding Safari Bookmarks, using the Finder go to Home > Library > Safari > Bookmarks.plist.
Copy this file and with Safari quit on the Mac to be transferred to, place the Bookmarks.plist copy in the same location.
If you want to transfer all Safari data, copy the entire Safari folder at Home > Library > Safari and with Safari quit on the Mac to be transferred to, place the copy at Home > Library.

  • Lost mail settings, address book, ichat settings and other prsnl settings!!

Quick question for you. Have you heard of anything in 10.4+ that causes the machine to revert back to startup condition loosing address book content, mail settings, ichat setttings, along with other personal settings??
All of iphoto still has its content. You have any idea? This happened to my parents machine on the eastcoast and I am trying to figure out what happened. Supposedly my father was "doing something" and then they noticed this happened. Is there something he could have done to reset the settings like that? Thanks for any input.
I have read a lot of posts that people are having the same kind of issue, at least with address book.
    Jeremy
    g4 867 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hey Jeremy, my iBook is all messed up, too. Somehow it set back to the default settings. Mail, Address Book, iTunes and iPhoto lost their data. However, all music and photo files are still in folders, only all of my emails are gone, which is more or less a catastrophe! Having read your discussion, I somehow have the impression that it has something to do with the user name, I wanted to change the name and then all of a sudden there was a big mess which resulted in having two users now, but all of the folders are mixed up. Can you be a little more precise about the repairing that worked for you, I would appreciate it very much, since I'm not very familiar with Apple products yet.
    Thanks, Daniel

  • Address Book weirdness...

Ok, I have 2 accounts that I have running on my machine, one for domestic and one for business.
I've made my peace with the fact I can't have multiple Address Book accounts with only 1 iCloud account.  I understand why it's impossible, and in a way there is a crossover between my domestic and business contacts.
However, in one account I am seeing all my groups under the header of iCloud.
Then in the other account I just see the groups, and they are not under the header of iCloud.  There is no iCloud header, although it does sync with my iCloud.
    I just don't understand why it's different.
    Any ideas?

    Try the following steps:
Make a backup of your records with the build-in application of AddressBook (AB).
Quit AB, trash the following files:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist.saved (if present)
drag the following folder to the desktop:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Addressbook
restart AB and type in a couple of new records to see if your problem is gone.
If yes, export these new addresses to a vCard and save on the desktop.
Now do "Revert to AddressBook backup..."
Import the new records from the vCards (this was just to prevent you typing these new one again)
Hopefully, the problem is now still gone. If not, please report back.

  • How do I transfer an address book from one computer to another?

I'm trying to transfer an address book from my G4 to my Imac G5 and can't seem to figure out how to do it. I've tried exporting out of one, but the other doesn't read it. These computers are not connected so I'm transferring via cd.
    Thanks,
    Dick Skover

    Hi Dick
If they are both running Tiger
Use "Backup Address Book" in Address Book > File to make a copy then
"Revert to Address Book Backup" on the iMac
I use this for backing up both Address Book and iCal as a matter of course (it is the Apple recommended way in the Help files) I put them into a folder in my "Documents" and clear old copies once a month. If you use .Mac I would certainly recommend it seeing the problems with data loss some folks have had.
