Address Book's Directory Services question

I have one server running 10.6 server. It's an Open Directory master, with several accounts created in the network node. I'm thinking there has to be a way that Address Book can show contact information of everyone that's managed by Open Directory.
What I can do now, is search via the search box (in Address Book client) for people managed by Open Directory and their contact information will show up.
What I can't do now, is click on the created group that should contain everyone's contact information and it show up. So I see zero contacts in the group created by being able to connect to the Address Book server. Any ideas? Thanks.

Used to be, maybe OSX server 10.4, that an . would bring up all entries in the directory but that no longer works either in 10.5 or 10.6 server.
Anyone have an idea?
Appears that it is only searching fname lname fields

  • My Address Book application is GONE - question mark on it on taskbar

Hi. I'm a relatively new Mac user. My Address Book app is gone completely from my Applications folder and it has a question mark on it when I click on the icon in the taskbar. All of my contacts appear to be intact in Mail - they show up when I type addresses in emails, and I can still see the photos I assigned to contacts when these contacts send me email. But the app itself is gone from the Applications folder and I can't seem to find it no matter where I search. I've searched for Address Book under every user profile on this machine.
I should note that I have 4-year-old daughter who uses this mac on occasion and who seems to have a special gift for the sorts of mouse-clicks and command-typing that evaporate or otherwise misfile important applications.
How do I reinstall just Address Book? It seems to be the only App missing. The Leopard disk seemed to be suggesting that a complete reinstall would be necessary which seems a bit much for just the one app.

You can use a program called "Pacifist" to install individual applications from the Leopard DVD (Available here: http://www.charlessoft.com/)

  • Address Book / Corporate Directory server (JES3)

Many of our users are pop and access mail via various browsers. Switching from o=xyz.com to o=xyz.com,o=abc will require users to update their address book "search root" to the new DIT. Is there any way to configure either messaging server or directory server to reconstruct (or redirect) a request made to o=xyz.com to the new structure?

Just wanted to let you know that I did find a solution. Using a smart referral works for this purpose, in that a lookup of o=smart_referral_domain.com allows search (and auto_completion) of user/group mail addresses in the o=x,o=y config.

  • How can I import iPhone contacts into Mac Address book

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and am in the process of trying to dump my Windows PC.
All of my important contacts are on my iPhone. How can I get those contacts into my Mac Address Book?
The same question goes for the music (ripped from CD) and my video files that are on my iPhone? The media is not that big of a deal because I can easily transfer it from my PC to my Mac but I assume I am not the only one in the world trying to do this and that Apple would make it very easy for MSFT Windows users to easily migrate to Macs.
I must be an idiot but I don't see any option in iTunes to transfer the data from my iPhone into iTunes and/or the Address Book.
    Thanks

The iPhone's primary function is NOT a word processor or a spread sheet analyzer.
I didn't say, nor was I trying to imply ANYTHING of the sort. You should read what I provided again a little slower and in it's entirety, not taking this out of context, which you made into Apples and Oranges.
It IS an iPod, a device designed to store and play music (in addition to being a browser and a phone).
It is a phone, an iPod, and an internet device, which supports transferring iTunes content from iTunes on a single computer ONLY.
Making it difficult to transfer my legal music from my iPhone to my Mac does not make me want to go out and buy more Apple products or Apple software.
Good, then don't - no skin off my back. I couldn't care less if you want to remain a Windows sufferer. All this doesn't come from Apple. Much of it comes from those who OWN the distribution rights for content sold thru the iTunes Store.
All of Apple's commercials imply how easy the user experience is over Windows. Well, in this case, they missed the boat BIG TIME!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but let me get this straight. You will likely need to transfer much more than just music from your Windows PC to your Mac and if so, how do you plan on accomplishing this? If you are transferring Word and Excel files, photos, and any other data, you won't be using an iPhone for this, so I don't see the big deal with transferring your iTunes library along with all other data being transferred.
I understand that the iPhone was not designed to be used as a backup. However, you allow the contacts to be merged in but not the music that I legally installed (but didn't purchase from the iTunes store).
I don't allow anything - this is a user to user help forum only.
As I provided in my first post in this thread - the sync process for contact information, calendar events, and bookmarks with an iPhone is bidirectional with the supported application on your computer. This is a sync process by definition of syncing - which is not the same for other data such as iTunes content and photos transferred from your computer to your iPhone.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1296
Apple wants to make it difficult unless I purchased the music from iTunes.
No, Apple or really those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for content sold thru the iTunes Store wants to make this difficult. Content sold thru the iTunes Store is set up by Apple to be a break even - which is included with the Apple stockholder's report. Apple makes their profit via sales of the iPod and iPhone. The bulk of the iTunes Store revenue goes to those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders for the content.
In addition, if my hard disk suffered a crash and I lost all my music it just seems stupid not to be able to pull it off my iPhone (yes, I know data should be backed up on a different drive, and mine is, but I am sure a lot of people do not back up their data).
Maintaining a backup of your data is important for this very reason, and for other reasons which is not Apple's responsibility. I believe iTunes includes an occasional warning message to backup your iTunes library (which can be turned off), and iTunes includes an option to transfer content purchased from the iTunes Store from an iPod or iPhone - since the overwhelming majority of this content includes DRM protection required by those who own the distribution rights or the copyright holders.
The iPhone was not designed as an external storage device or as a backup device - end of story. If someone chooses not to maintain a backup, they are playing Russian roulette with their data. Maintaining a backup is important regardless the platform, but even more so when running Windows with constant virus, adware, and spyware concerns.

  • Personal Address Book Error !

    hi
i have added the ip phone service personal address book, subcribered the service for the phone, and i can see the service from the phone when i press the services button. But when i search the entry in the PAB ,it shows the message "Error:-7ffbc5c2:User(none)was unable to be validated(14910)",what's wrong with it?
    thanks

    Hi
It sounds like you've subscribed the service but haven't either defined the correct parameters, or set the parameters for the user you are subscribing.
As you create the service in CCMAdmin, you need to defined userid, pin and prefix parameters as defined in this document:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_tech_note09186a00800b2eba.shtml
Then each user has to either use ccmuser to set their password and userid when they subscribe, or you need to do it for them individually from ccmadmin.

  • Account options - Refresh address books / rules range

    Hi Forum,
sometime I get (annoying) calls that there are old users on distribution lists which are already deleted. They get an error message if they send mails to that list...
So far I could always resolve that issue by simply refresh the system groupwise address book manually.
My question now is how I could reduce the mentioned refresh range in the account options to 1 day e.g. via C1 or some other way (default is 7).
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance :)
    Cheers,
    Pascal

    Hi Pascal,
Firstly double-check that nightly user upkeep is running on your post offices. This process removes deleted accounts from personal address books.
As far as changing the setting for a caching/remote mailbox to download address books every 1 day instead of the default of 7 days - I never found a way to automate this. We manage this manually. Fortunately for us, we the IT people, setup the caching mailbox for each user, so the process of changing this setting to 1 day is well documented.
Perhaps there's a registry key - but I'm not sure.
    Cheers,

    You're welcome.

You can sync contacts between your Apple Address Book and the Outlook address book via sync services with Outlook.

  • Mail and Address Book Missing contacts after importing a VCard

Okay, I don't know precisely when this happened, but I guess it might have happened when I upgraded to Leopard. I rarely used Address Book, but I would add contacts of some of my friends to in every now and then from Mail. Right click on the address in Mail and select "Add to Address Book".
Immediately after upgrading to Leopard I had received a massive VCard from my coworkers, which I promptly added to my Address Book. Weeks later I'm digging around in Address Book and I see only about 10% of my old addresses. ***?!
Stranger, when I go back to Mail and go to Window>Previous Recipients, among the long list of emails there, it shows that the emails that I had long ago added to Address Book ARE indeed in Address Book.
    So, three questions:
    • Where did my old Address Book contacts go?
    • Why does Previous Recipients list my missing contacts as being in Address Book when Address Book itself doesn't show them?
    • How can I get the contacts that Previous Recipients sees to appear in Address Book again?

"The ones with the v-card icon are already supposed to be in addressbook, and so, the button goes gray."
Yah. But they don't appear in Address Book anymore.
Something I noticed, in Users>Home>Library>Application Support>Address Book there is "AddressBook.data" and "AddressBook.data.previous". Might the ".previous" version be where my old contacts are residing? Might there be a way to pry them out and merge them into the other file?
    Hmm.

  • How To Restrict SSL Ciphers for iCal and Address Book

  • I want to use a Thunderbird address book folder to mail merge into MS Word letter [name, address]. How to?

I recently migrated from Outlook 2010 to Thunderbird. I have contact folders. I publish a newsletter in MS Word. I want to mail merge my newsletter with now a specific contact database [folder] in the Thunderbird address book. So my question is, how to do this?

Unfortunately, the tight and smooth integration you have experienced between Outlook and Word is due to those two products having come from the same Office stable and having been designed from the outset for such interoperability. With Thunderbird coming from a third party author, there's not much incentive for Microsoft to support or encourage interchange of data between Office components and Thunderbird.
If you have Outlook and Word, what advantages do you anticipate in using Thunderbird? (Personally, I do exactly the same because I dislike Outlook and its Ribbon in particular). But I don't have much call for the sort of task you are attempting.
The long and short of it is that you'll probably have to export your TB Address Book to a format that your Word mail merge can use. Since I haven't tried this for myself in a long time, I don't know what Word can use. I'd hope that CSV would fit the bill.
If you are thinking about moving away from Microsoft Office, then you might look at Libre Office, which can, IIRC, use a data source such as Thunderbird's address book as a mail merge source. But this alone may not be a very good reason to move away from tools you know. :-S

  • Simple question; Mac Server Setup for Mail, iCal and Address Book Services.

    Hi Guys;
I'm new to the Mac Server world and need a few questions answered.
I have purchased a new Mac mini Server for hosting File, Web, Mail, iCal and Address Book Services.
I’m comfortable setting up File and Web Services however I’m a bit uneasy setting up Mail, iCal and Address Book services to be access locally and remotely(via the internet).
    My current setup is;
Internet connection (Dynamic IP) -> Router -> Mac mini Server.
I have purchased a domain name (Thornton-net.com) from DynDns.com + a custom DNS service as I can setup my router to update my domain’s IP address automatically.
I can access File and Web Services remotely (thortnon-net.com) perfectly without any issues via the Port Forwarding feature of the Router.
If I setup Mail, iCal and Address Book Services -> will Mail, iCal and Address Book clients be able to access these services hosted by the server via Thornton-net.com?
    Message was edited by: Allan.Thornton

    Welcome to the forums.
For mail services (and specifically for your outbound mail to be accepted by other mail servers) your mail server needs to have a static IP address and matching forward and reverse and MX records, or a tunnel to a static IP (with matching DNS), or you need another mail server where you have an authorized relay. Without that, your mail will be considered a spam engine, and dropped.
Additionally, your particular tier of service with your ISP (with a static IP) will generally allow server-oriented access and server-oriented network traffic, where a residential or other tier of service (with a dynamic IP addresses) can be firewalled.
The ISP controls the "high ground" of the network connections here, so you pretty much get to play by their rules and requirements. If they don't offer static IP, then (presuming their T&Cs permit it) you get to tunnel (via IPv6, for instance) to a tunnel broker, and receive your network traffic via that (and with matching DNS) point of presence. That could well be a tunnel for your mail at whichever your DNS provider is here, because you'll have issues with your dynamic address. (You get to sort out if they offer that.)
Far and away the easiest approach (if you want to host this stuff yourself) is to work with the ISP. They're inherently involved in your network, and they and they alone have full control over your reverse DNS configuration.

  • LDAP support limited. How to configure Address Book / Directory Access?

I complained to a sysadmin that my LDAP searches were returning very limited information (just surname and e-mail). He replied,
"...[Address Book] can't be configured to query specific attributes, it can't be configured to show specific attributes except for the small set they have elected to permit, ... it doesn't even show cn/commonName which is a compulsory field in the inetOrgPerson schema or ou/organizationalUnitName which is the standard way of distinguishing components of an organization..."
Directory Access seems to offer facilities for requesting specific attributes. I tried mapping them to Address Book fields, but with no improvement in the search results. Any tips?

Here is some info I found on manually configuring and mapping schemas.
    Configuring LDAP Searches and Mappings
Using Directory Access, you can edit the mappings, search bases, and search scopes that specify how Mac OS X finds specific data items in an LDAP directory. You can edit these settings separately for each LDAP directory configuration listed in Directory Access. Each LDAP directory configuration specifies how Mac OS X accesses data in an LDAPv3 or LDAPv2 directory.
You can edit the mapping of each Mac OS X record type to one or more LDAP object classes.
For each record type, you can also edit the mapping of Mac OS X data types, or attributes, to LDAP attributes.
You can edit the LDAP search base and search scope that determine where Mac OS X looks for a particular Mac OS X record type in an LDAP directory.
IMPORTANT: When mapping Mac OS X user attributes to a read/write LDAP directory domain (an LDAP domain that is not read-only), the LDAP attribute mapped to RealName must not be the same as the first attribute in a list of LDAP attributes mapped to RecordName. For example, the cn attribute must not be the first attribute mapped to RecordName if cn is also mapped to RealName.
For detailed specifications of Mac OS X record types and attributes, refer to "Mac OS X Server Open Directory Administration for Version 10.4 or Later" (available at www.apple.com/server/documentation/).
    In Directory Access, click Services.
If the lock icon is locked, click it and type the name and password of an administrator.
Select LDAPv3 in the list of services, then click Configure.
If the list of server configurations is hidden, click Show Options.
Select a server configuration in the list, then click Edit.
    Click Search & Mappings.
Select the mappings that you want to use as a starting point, if any.
Click the "Access this LDAPv3 server using" pop-up menu and choose a mapping template to use its mappings as a starting point or choose Custom to begin with no predefined mappings.
Add record types and change their search bases as needed.
To add record types, click the Add button below the Record Types and Attributes list. In the sheet that appears, select Record Types, select one or more record types from the list, and then click OK.
To change the search base and search scope of a record type, select it in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then edit the "Search base" field. Select "all subtrees" to set the search scope to include the entire LDAP directory's hierarchy from the search base down. Select "first level only" to set the search scope to include only the search base and one level below it in the LDAP directory's hierarchy.
To remove a record type, select it in the Record Types and Attributes List and click Delete.
To add a mapping for a record type, select the record type in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then click the Add button below "Map to __ items in list" and enter the name of an object class from the LDAP directory. To add another LDAP object class, you can press Return and enter the name of the object class. Specify whether to use all or any of the listed LDAP object classes by using the pop-up menu above the list.
To change a mapping for a record type, select the record type in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then double-click the LDAP object class that you want to change in the "Map to __ items in list" and edit it. Specify whether to use all or any of the listed LDAP object classes by using the pop-up menu above the list.
To remove a mapping for a record type, select the record type in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then click the LDAP object class that you want to remove from the "Map to __ items in list" and click the Delete button below "Map to __ items in list."
Add attributes and change their mappings as needed.
To add attributes to a record type, select the record type in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then click the Add button below the Record Types and Attributes list. In the sheet that appears, select Attribute Types, select one or more attribute types, and then click OK.
To add a mapping for an attribute, select the attribute in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then click the Add button below "Map to __ items in list" and enter the name of an attribute from the LDAP directory. To add another LDAP attribute, you can press Return and enter the name of the attribute.
To change a mapping for an attribute, select the attribute in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then double-click the item that you want to change in the "Map to __ items in list" and edit the item name.
To remove a mapping for an attribute, select the attribute in the Record Types and Attributes List. Then click the item that you want to remove from the "Map to __ items in list" and click the Delete button below "Map to __ items in list."
To change the order of attributes displayed in the list on the right, drag the attributes up or down in the list.
Click Save Template if you want to save your mappings as a template.
Templates saved in the default location are listed in pop-up menus of LDAP mapping templates the next time the current user opens Directory Access. The default location for saved templates is in the current user's home folder at this path:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Directory Access/LDAPv3/Templates
Click Write to Server if you want to store the mappings in the LDAP directory so that it can supply them automatically to its clients.
You must enter a search base to store the mappings, a distinguished name of an administrator (for example, uid=diradmin,cn=users,dc=ods,dc=example,dc=com), and a password. If you are writing mappings to an Open Directory LDAP server, the correct search base is "cn=config, suffix" (where suffix is the server's search base suffix, such as "dc=ods,dc=example,dc=com").
The LDAP directory supplies its mappings to Mac OS X clients whose custom search policy includes a connection that's configured to get mappings from the LDAP server. The LDAP directory also supplies its mappings to all Mac OS X clients that have an automatic search policy. For instructions, see Configuring Access to an LDAP Directory and Setting Up Search Policies.

  • Random Address Book Question

Apologies if I've posted in the wrong forum.  I am not quite sure where this question belongs.
My mother still uses the ancient Rolodex (see picture below) for her contact information.  I would like to transfer this information to her computer as an early birthday present.  I am hoping that some software or technique exists that can help me avoid the hours and misery of having to enter the names, addresses and numbers from each card ... there are thousands.
Ideally (and I mean that in the strongest sense of the word), I am looking for a program or service or other mechanism that would
take the information from a scan of a card (or cards)*
    convert that information to text
    and then either
              (a) provide me the data to copy and paste onto a new cards in the Address Book application or in Outlook, or my Google Address Book.
              OR
              (b) Magically create the cards for me. (Obviously this would be the preferred method in my idyllic computer world.)
    * The only reason I mention scanning the cards is because it is the only way I know of to get the information from the paper card onto a computer.  If there is another method please feel free to tell me.
While it does not show, I have attempted to ask this question in the least confusing way possible.  Any leads would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.
    A Rolodex ------------->

You would need a scanner with OCR (optical character regocnition) software. It scans the text and makes an educated guess as to what the letter is and types that into a doc for you. It works best when you are scanning typed text. If it is handwriting it will be pretty spotty getting the letters right. Either way this will be very labor intensive because you will still need to correct any mistakes you find, and it will only save the step of actually reading the cards yourself and typing them.
The other thing I can think of is when you said service. You could just hire a temp agency to have someone do it for you, paid by the hour. Or maybe a school job wanted board.
But no magic to create the cards I know of!
