Address Book Server & Smart Groups

Do these two even work together?
We are running OS X Snow Leopard Server and Address Book.  Clients can see the records as expected.
But clients that create Smart Groups can't use them with records on the server.  You can create a Smart Group, and it will show the desired records in the "Name" column, but no other clients see the Smart Group on their versions of Address Book.  And when you try and print a Smart Group, no records show up.
It looks like regular groups work, but smart groups don't?  Is this correct?
Thanks,
Kevin

I have similar problem with Mawerkicks. Did you find some solution since you posted your question in 2011?
Thanks

  • Address Book Server - access from WAN

I can access my Address Book Server using the server's LAN IP address but not its domain name.
I have set up a global Address Book using the technique suggested in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/message/10571482#10571482 which works well. I have a couple of users set up who can see changes the other user makes to the Global Address Book.
The Global Address Book is accessed at my OS X Server's LAN address, 192.168.1.1 with the details as stated in the above thread.
I should (and want to) be able to access the Global Address Book from outside my LAN using the OS X Server's fully qualified domain name, myserver.mydomain.tld. But it doesn't. The client (10.7) Address Book fails to access. The domain address is correctly mapped to the server and works for other services such as iChat. Router ports are (obviously) open.
So I can set up a client Address book using 192.168.1.1:8800/principals/groups/abglobal/ but not myserver.mydomain.tld:8800/principals/groups/abglobal/ nor over port 8843 & SSL.
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

It likely would be, if it's supported at all. Ask the support department of your service provider.

  • Allow user to edit their own Address Book server entry

    Hiya.
I'm looking for a way to let users edit their own information in the Address Book Server/Open directory. I've made sure the main group for users is in the AB Read-Write Groups group in WGM.
I've even checked the box in Server Admin that says "Allow users to edit their own contact information", but after adding the account to an address book client and authenticating as a user (For example, myself), I can't edit my own contact info anywhere that will push to the server.
Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks!

You'd need to write a php script or something to interface with applescript…

  • ADDING CONTACTS TO ADDRESS BOOK SERVER!!!!!!!!!

Can someone please help me figure out how to add contacts to the address book server. I tried to drag my contacts but it doesn't work. There is no "+" button for me to add new contacts. I've been trying for a couple days and nothing. Thank you in advance!

Try Googling create group in address book -- or something similar!
In Address Book there is a + sign at the bottom of the window. Select the root folder of the server account in the Address Book client, and click the + to create a group, then type its name if you don't want it to be called 'new group'.

  • Cant add new contacts to Address Book Server

I would like to have a Global Address Book Server where all the user can add/delete contacts. I have done all the setups but in the iMacs (the users) I can see the Address Book Server but NOT the + button to add a new contact. Why ?
In the group name, together to "Address Book Server" there is not any error icon so I understand the client-server connection is well done.
Can someone tell me what should I check ?
    Thank you in advanced

I was look ing at this last night. I think there's an 'add new contacts to' type pop-up somewhere in the client account settings. That might be it.

  • 10.6.2 breaks syncing address book server contacts on iPhone?

I had this working, then I think it broke what I updated to 10.6.2.
Snow Leopard Server with Address Book Server. My 10.6.2 client can successfully connect to and sync contacts that are on the server. No problem. When I go to sync my iPhone, only the contacts that are stored locally on my machine sync, not the contacts on the server.
As I said, this was working, then one day it wasn't. I was able to sync the contacts that are stored on the server to my iPhone via iTunes. "All Contacts" is still checked, nothing changed other than 10.6.2 update.
Can anyone else verify this? Are you doing this? Is it working for you in 10.6.1? 10.6.2? Thanks in advance. (And yes, I have posted this in the SLS forum, but this isn't a server connectivity/behavior issue, it's between the iPhone and iTunes and Address Book.)

Apple says that if it used to work for me, as is described in the materials on the website which is the way it is supposed to work, that it was actually the unexpected behavior. Hm.
They did say to wait for an iPhone update which will allow the iPhone to talk directly to Address Book Server. For now, I should make a local group, copy the contacts from the server into that local group, and sync them that way. Kind of defeats the whole purpose of a central contacts server. Oh well. Here's hoping.

  • Problems with the address book server! Really need some help here!

    Hello everyone!
for about some time now, we're having some troubbles with the address book server located on our Mac Pro Server running SL Server. The connected clients somehow show multiple entries of groups, contacts and everything else address book can show. Sometimes you see one group or contact about 20-30 times or even more.
How can the addressbook server on SL Server be configured that these faults won't show up again. With this present, using address book server is useless. As far as my knowledge goes, I've tried everything I can. I deleted the address book account set up on each client, readded it, but no help. I stopped the address book server on the Mac pro, but no help either.
For your further information: we're connecting 14 clients. Moste of the rum Lion, three run ML and several iDevices connect via WiFi.
Please help me, as this really is frustrating!
    Looking forward for your help.
    Regards,
    Moritz

  • IChat always adding contacts to "On My Mac" (cf. Address Book Server)

    I added:
Encountering exactly the same issue here on the Snow Leopard Server and clients I set up at our office. When joining an iChat contact to a Contacts stored in an Address Book Server card a (slightly incomplete) copy of the Address Book Server card is created in the “On My Mac” location and it’s this new local card that iChat connects to.
I don’t want these duplicate cards in my Address Book. The ones stored on the Address Book Server should be enough.
This whole local vs server card access issue seems… unfinished (and at a lower API level, if indeed FaceTime exhibits the same issue). Is there a solution to keep these cards on the Address Book Server but still reference them in iChat, without ending up with a duplicate local copy of the cards? Do I need to log this in Radar as a bug?

I have the same issue, and it is quite annoying. It seems as though Apple got the CalDav, CardDav, Push Notification, and iChat servers working just well enough to release, but didn't really get them working well.
I would file a bug with Apple, as I have not found any way of preventing a local copy being made.

  • Address Book Server sync to iPhone

Once you've setup Address Book Server and you've connected to it via the Address Book client, what's the best way to get those contacts onto the iPhone? The iPhone doesn't have a CardDAV account option so that leaves syncing via iTunes, unless I'm missing something.

    Hi Demonstrous,
Intersting! You gave me a flash on inspiration, so I went and grabbed the Iphone Config Util (latest version). I setup (just) a CalDav account, uploaded it, and pointed Safari at it. It updated, and sure enough there was my new account setup.
But, ... this is where are story differs.
Where does it say PUSH in your iPhone config, which would make you think its working.
I checked on the server, ... 1st clue, under Push Notification, only TWO connections (one for mail, one for Calendar), ... technically there should be a THIRD for the iPhone using CalDav push. Not there.
I check under: Settings -> Push Notifications. (I see Prowl), but no mention of Calendar. Not there.
I check on: Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and under my calendar there is nothing to show that its now Push. Not there.
With my iPhone on, at the springboard, .. I log into a test account Web Calendar, ... setup a new appointment and INVITE my iPhone CalDav account. Its setup.
1 - No PUSH notification, that its received a new event.
2 - No PUSH notification on the badge for Calendar, to show a new event.
Click on iCal, and ofcourse it POLLS my server, and shows the event.
But this thing is NOT smart.
It doesn't know that despite it being setup as MY CalDav account, and showing a new event which is inviting me to attend....
1 - It doesn't know that ME is ME. i.e. when I click on my (invited) name, it gives me options to create a new contact, add to existing contact, or share contact. It doesn't get that this is MEEEEEEE !
2 - It doesn't allow me to accept the event (based partly on #1 above). It should know there's an invite for ME, and should allow me to accept or decline the invitation.
So, .. all this leads me to believe that its not push, its still POLL, and that it needs a serious upgrade to the iPhone app to become "user aware".
    Still think yours is Push..?
    Cheers!

  • Address Book server -- any way to make an account "read-only"?

So, they'd like to incorporate Address Book Server here to work as a "group" address book.
But they only want to give certain people read-write access to the group book and read-only address to others.
As far as I know, there's no way to do this (like you could with an iCal "delegate" for comparison.)
But I was thinking -- is there some way to just set an AB Server account read-only in general?
If so, I was thinking I could set up two AB Server accounts -- the "read-write" account for some users and then script/sync the values in that account nightly to a "read-only" account.
But I can't figure out if there's a way to marke an AB server account read-only to begin with.
    Any suggestions along these lines?
    Thanks!

I'd imagine this is a question that only Apple can answer, as it would require some "behind the scenes" tinkering with Terminal etc., if it were at all possible.
Its definitely something they should think about including in a future release, as there seem to be quite a few people here who want a shared calendar, plus therefore the ability to pick who can EDIT vs. just read the info on it.
    Cheers!

  • Setting up Address book Server

How do I set up an Address book server.
Do I have to go about setting up full blow network accounts.
I would just like to share contact information between a large group of coworkers. maintaining one company directory instead of individual directories on each users machine.
    Thanks for the help

I'd probably use LDAP (Open Directory), but you can choose to use use either LDAP or a shared Address Book Server, or you can use both in parallel. Here's a write-up: [Address Book Tips: Shared Contacts, LDAP Connections|http://labs.hoffmanlabs.com/node/1600]

  • How do I add an Address Book Server account to iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.3

    Heya,
I have an iPhone 3G that is running version 3.1.3 of the iPhone OS and I need to add an Address Book Server account (that is being run on Snow Leopard Server to the phone but the only option I have is LDAP. My understanding is that Address Book Server uses CardDAV not LDAP. So I went ahead and added the account by choosing "Settings" -> "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" -> "Add Account..." ->"Other" -> "Contacts - Add LDAP Account" and entered my servers information. After selecting "Next" it prompts me with the following message:
"Cannot Connect Using SSL - Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?"
I choose "Continue" -> the message disappears and I choose "Save" -> then I'm prompted with this message:
"This account may not be able to search contacts. Are you sure you want to save?"
I choose "Save" and it appears to add it. To verify I exit "Settings" and go to "Address Book" and none of my contacts appear. I even let it sit for an hour on a WiFi connection without any luck. Can someone help?
    Thanks!

    Hey Grupo Castillo,
Thanks for the question. You can actually configure this behavior from Mail preferences:
    1. Choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
    2. Click Composing.
    3. Deselect the checkbox for "When sending to a group, show all member addresses".
When you send an email to the group, only the groups name will be seen.

  • Calendar server and address book server login fails with outlook connector

    Hi all,
I have installed Java Communication Suite 5 according to the doc http://blogs.sun.com/factotum/resource/comms5-install-linux.html.

    Hi,
When i deploy the connector i get the pop ups saying
    "Server:servername:3080
Error:service not available" also Do you get exactly what you say above, or have you substituted in the real server name for "Server:servername:" above?
I would check through the outlook connector deployment configuration to verify that you have inserted valid information into all of the host & port fields - perhaps check the .ini file that is created to see if it has "Server" and "servername" listed.
    "Server:servername:80/uwc"
Error:service not available"You are able to log into UWC via the web-interface and access your calendar/pab and edit/modify/delete calendar & addressbook entries right? The services are all up?
asking to login to calendar server and address book
server.Clicking "OK" allows install. The outlook connector deployment software gives you the option to increase the logging level, try that and see what the logs say - what was it trying to connect to/check which failed.
In outlook i can send and receive mails but not the
meeting requests. It gives the error "login to
calendar server" when i create a meeting request.
Please let me know what i have to do to get rid of
the error. The username and passwd entered is
correct.I suspect this is more of an underlying configuration issue that needs to be sorted out, once that happens you shouldn't have to keep logging in.
