Address Book Sharing

Is it at all possible to share parts of my address book but not the hole darn thing? Not sure if this really needs to be in feedback or if I am missing something.
My address book covers everything from family, several groups of friends, financial companies, software companies, health related companies, work venders, co-workers, past job references and several different mail lists participants. As you can see I have many aspects of my life that should not be viewed by all other aspects of my life.
Simply, how can I share the "Family" group of my address book with my family to edit and put their current or updated information?

Unfortunately the Address Book sharing feature for both Tiger and Leopard only works on an all-or-nothing basis.

  • Address Book Sharing: are custom fields shared or left behind

I want to share an Address Book on one system with 3 other users through MobileMe. I will also allow the 3 other users to add, delete and change the contacts. All 4 systems have their own MobileMe accounts.
We make extensive use of custom relationship fields. Will those fields transfer with the with the shared contacts, or are they left behind?
(I know that only a limited number of relationship fields (no custom fields at all) in Address Book are available to Pages and Bento)
I've looked all over the Address Book sharing information (that I can find), and the issue of custom fields does not seem to be addressed in connection with Address Book Sharing.
Can anyone recommend any documentation that answers this question?
Is there any real (detailed) documentation at all about Address Book Sharing?
    Thanks for your help.

@taylor thanks for the suggestion, but it's not quite what i had in mind. The red -/green + buttons are used to add/remove more items in the same category, ie., phone numbers, email addresses, URLs, etc. If you finish editing a record and then click on one of these fields, you get a contextual menu with various options.
But, my Skype name is not an email address, nor is it a phone number. It belongs in the IM section of the Contact template, but unlike the "Custom" option for labeling a Phone Number, the IM drop-down menu doesn't have a Custom option, nor a Skype option.
There are several possible workarounds, but that's the point, innit? Skype has been around a long time - there shouldn't be a need for a workaround.

  • Address book sharing crashes

Address book sharing appears to be stuck. I am using a .Mac sync for sharing address book with myself, but don't want to share my address book with anyone else, but the app seems to want to share itself.
On login, and every hour after logging in the system slows to a standstill for about 5 minutes, the mouse still works but I get the beachball. I found a problem with address book in console:
    crashdump[1462]: AddressBookSharing crashed
If I open address book preferences on LDAP or Sharing it crashes. Deleting preferences [com.apple.AddressBook.plist] doesn't fix this, but opening address book 3 times resets preferences and allows the preferences to be opened, but the Mac is still sluggish every hour after login. Restarting starts the whole fiasco again. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

    Hi Erik,
I have tried tossing out the plist files, any prefs or settingsfile i could find with connection to address book
Can you recall which files those were exactly? Maybe you missed something that someone might spot.

  • Address Book sharing via MobileMe does not seem to work

I am trying to share my address book with my wife's Mac and here iPod touch. We both have a Mobile Me account (via the Family Pack). So I shared my address book and invited her. All worked so far. But: while my address book shows up on her Mac it appears to be empty. No addresses, nothing.
I looked up the /Library/Application Support/Address Book/ folder on my iDisk which address book sharing has created. There's an "info" and a "dateFile" file there as well as a "Peoples" subfolder. The latter contains folders from 1 to 31 but all are empty so it appears that somehow my Mac is not sharing my addresses.
Has anybone here an idea what could be the problem or where I should search for the cause of this behavior?

OK, solved this myself by deleting the whole Address Book database and reimporting my contacts not from an archive but a previously exported vCard. It seems the database was simply damages somehow.

  • Address Book (Sharing) Preferences hang

    Hi,
I've been wrestling with this problem for a few months now and have been unable to resolve it.
    Problem
    When I am in Address Book.app and select "Preferences" I get a spinning beach-ball of death. Eventually the preferences will appear. If I then select 'Sharing' I will once again get a spinning beach-ball that will eventually go away but the sharing preferences don't (usually) appear. At that point I also get an error in my console.log;
    2007-08-03 13:41:23.998 Address Book\[3063\] Read attempt failed (1,60)
    I have also seen additional errors;
2007-08-03 13:18:00.431 Address Book\[2810\] Could not find image named 'QuestionMark'.
    2007-08-03 13:19:34.256 Address Book\[2810\] Caught Read attempt failed (1,60)
    Additional information
    * I was running AddressX and have now removed it in case it was in some way related to this problem.
This error occurs on the other account I have on my MacBook pro too.
    I am running an up-to-date 10.4.10
I have no items in the 'Sharing' preference pane on either of my accounts.
I did have 'Sync with Exchange' ticked on one of the accounts (on which I have never used the address book). I have now unticked that option and the problem remains.
    Things I have tried
1- I have verified my disk. No problems reported.
2- I have run 'plutil ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist' and it came back OK.
3- I removed each of the 3 .plist files in ~/Library/Preferences/ in turn, logged out and in again and recreated the problem each time.
4- I removed the (Adium) add-in scripts that were in ~/Library/Address Book Plug-Ins/ and the problem still occurs.
5- I removed the (Skype) plugins in /Library/Address Book Plug-ins/ and the problem still occurs.
I wonder if there are any kind souls out there who can suggest any further debugging steps I could take to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance.

    Austin,
The fonts validated OK so I removed Address Book.app plus the preferences using AppDelete. This deleted all the relevant files including the .data file that actually holds the address book.
Whilst I was downloading the combo updater (even before I reinstalled the 10.4.8 version of AB) an iSync window popped up telling me that it was syncing and going to add 2 new addresses and delete 1189 (the number of addresses I have). I cancelled the sync. This was a surprise to me as I don't run iSync usually- I guess MacOS X maintains a separate address book somewhere.
Anyway- long story short- after the reinstall and update back to 10.4.10 AB is working fine. Thanks!
I still can't figure out what the Sync window was that popped up and how AB reinstalled with my full address book, but the world is a good place again. Thanks.

  • Address Book shared contacts syncing issues

    Hi all,
So I've been trying to set up a system with a co-worker where I share his address book, and we both change as needed (on a daily, hourly basis). I subscribed to his address book, he has sharing on, and added me. It shows his address book, but it doesn't load his contacts.
There are about 6,000 contacts in his, and it says there are 1,200 but thats it and it won't go further. I tried restarting all of the sharing contacts process but now its just the pinwheel till the end of time.
Am I just impatient? BTW I've been waiting about 6 hours. Please help! Also if you know any Contact Management database for mac that syncs over mult. users, PLEASE let me know. We're willing to pay. Thank you!!
    - Mark

My Address Book is also not syncing with Google. I ticked Synchronize with Google, entered my username and password, closed the Preferences window and nothing happened. I reopened Address Book to see if it would start syncing, but nothing happened again. After that I tried entering a new contact into Address Book to see if it would sync to Google Contacts. It didn't. On the other hand, my iPhone has no problem syncing with Google Contacts.
What gives? Why put an option if it doesn't work? Is there a solution, a trick?

  • Address book sharing slow

hello, it is now two weeks we are running our new MACs . we are all 10.6.2 (3 clients + 1 mac mini server)
I was able to create a shared address book adding the same account on each clients.
What I see is that it is really slow, useless for business applications, you can wait for minutes after you click on one contact or jump from one group to a different one.
our database is made by 1000 contacts and approx 6Mb
    any idea?
    thanks.

Join the club. This service prominently featured in SL Server sales literature is, to be charitable, not useable with many contacts. Our database is about 3400 so maybe it works with less than a thousand, Apple support could not tell me. To save you some trouble it is not your hardware as we are running a quad-core Xserve and have increase RAM to try to get this to work to no avail. We were told early on in the 10.6 life cycle that we should use a shared MobileMe account. Works better that Address book sever but not reliable - sometimes doubles contacts, sometimes we find differences between Address Books on different Macs, etc., etc.
Also, I cannot recommend Daylight. Wrestled with it for 5 years and finally gave up to try Address Book Server when Apple released it on SL.
Sure seems like this should not be so hard!

  • How does Address Book sharing work? Apple help not specific enough.

I've set up my home and work Macs, both with .Mac accounts, to share Address Book. But how do you actually do it? I don't see my work contacts on my home Mac, or vice-versa.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    I found the answer myself.

  • Address Book Shared via Server to Client

    Hi guys!
Do you know a procedure in order to configure and share, Address Book from OSX_Server Leopard to all my clients???
At the moment, every single client has own addresses.....i want to share address book to all client!
    Thank a lot!
    Simone

This is a way of getting a company-wide address book with Address Book Server. It's been in this forum on numerous earlier threads, although is not necessarily a supported method by Apple:
    1. Open WorkGroup manager.
    2. Create a new Groups in LDAPv3/127.0.0.1 , for example: group name: managers. Add several users to this group. eg. user1.
    3. Change to "Local Directory" by clicking the "global" icon and click Groups.
    4. Click "view" at the menu bar and select "Show system record". Then you will see "AB Read-Write Groups" in groups.
    5. Click "add". At the top of pullout sidebar, change it to "LDAPv3/127.0.0.1", you will the "managers" group. Drag it into the "AB Read-Write Groups" groups.
    6. Save it. Restart AB service in ServerAdmin.
    7. Open AddressBook.app ( client ). In the preferences account, click add,
    8. Enter user name and password ( eg. user1 ::: see above, which is in "managers" group. )
    9. Enter "http://you-server-address:8800/principals/groups/managers/" in server address.
    10. Click create.
    11. Working.

  • Is my address book shared with ios developers?

What measures is Apple taking to lock down security on iOS Address Book so contents not freely available to developers?

Those details are available to developers that have participated in an agreement and related NDAs.
Google is your friend to otherwise publically available info on iOS security.

  • Cannot find address book sharing

I've logged into iCloud, and when I pull up my address book, it does not offer me the option to "share" my address book with other iCloud subscribers.

Your address book is a separate application called AddressBook in your Applications folder.
Mail remembers previous address and you can see that in Mail menu > Window > "Previous recipients".

  • Address Book Sharing and Subscription Trouble

I have successfully subscribed to a friend's Address Book from my Mac laptop at work, a G5 PowerPC laptop running MacOSX (10.4.7); however, when I try this same subscription from my home computer, an iMac Intel Core Duo (20"), I have trouble. The trouble is that when I try to subscribe to my friends published (to me) Address Book from my home computer, I just get a spinning kaleidescope and the Address Book application hangs indefinitely.
What can I do? Who can I call for help..?

  • Calendar & Address Book Sharing - Cross Platform

I am setting up a LAN for a new business.
They will have a Mac OS X 10.4 server and less then 10 Macs. 2-3 Windows clients will be added too.
What they seek to accomplish it to share calendars and contacts across the LAN and across the platforms. They also want easy syncing with their Palm phones. Mail will be served from the ISP.
Can this be done with the tools supplied with OS X Server 10.4 and the Windows clients? Are there better 3rd party solutions to try?
    Thanks for your time.

  • Adding an Address Book card from a shared address book to a Group

I have an Address Book Sharing Question/Problem. With the .Mac Family Pack, I have multiple .Mac Accounts. I have set up Address Book to share addresses from the individual .Mac accounts and set each to be able to edit the shared addresses. Initially, I was hoping that these would appear in each users Address Book and sync all changes, instead of just appearing as a shared Address Book below the users Address Book. But that does not appear to be the case.
However, my question/problem is that I want to be able to add a card from a shared Address Book (for example from my wife’s Address Book) into a current group in my Address Book (say a family member group). I can drag the card in, but the information is apparently copied as a new card into my Address Book and changes I make are no longer synced with the shared Address Book (my Wife’s Address Book). Is this working correctly? (I know .Mac has been acting up in the last few weeks) If so, there does not appear to be much value in say sharing family, doctor, and friends info from my wife’s address book, as I can not create my own groups or if I do, our contact info is no longer synced. The new cards I copy in are also not visible to the shared Address Book, so we will also have no way of seeing that a card has been changed. Is there anyway to truly share a card or group of contacts between users of separate .Mac accounts so that the contacts can be separated into different groups for each user and card info / changes will remain synced? If this is already supposed to be occurring, any ideas as to a fix?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Also, if I drag an entire group from a shared Address Book to my Address Book, it is copied in a blue color, making me think "Cool! It is different from a group that I create (which are white), so it must be shared!" But it is not. Changes to cards in this "copied" group are not synced to the original shared Address Book. So, what does the blue color mean?

  • Sharing Address Book with e-mail only accounts

    Hello:
I have created two email only account and would like to share the primary address book with these accounts. I have added these accounts in sharing folders and sent the invite.
The main functionality I am looking for is access my contact information via the .mac interface with the email only accounts. I have created the new emails accounts based on the fact Tiger was going to allow the contacts to be shared across multiple accounts.
    Can anyone help??
    imac dome 2002 17in 1.25Gig   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Address Book sharing uses the iDisk to store the contact data. So I am fairly certain that this feature doesn't work with email-only accounts.
