Address Book window

Hi. I'm using Address Book to organize my data...and it works just fine.
The only problem I can't solve is:
When openning a card, (which has name, phone, email...) it places a huge 'gap' between the fields, so I have to scroll...actually it should place the fields line by line...
I don't know what's going on.
if anyone could help...!
Thank you,
mk.

You're on to something; I think it's just the address panel window, as there's no way the Address Book app would be able to open quickly enough and then close quickly enough for me not to catch it.
I can't figure out what is triggering the panel popping up though -- it's certainly not the Mail-specified key command. Plus, when it pops up, it pops up in the background and then just as quickly disappears.
I was concerned that it was some kind of a virus trying to farm email addresses out of my address book.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
I would recommend that you check out Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther, by Kurt Lang.
Another possibility is to Quit Address Book, find the com.apple.AddressBook.plist in the ~Library/Preferences Folder. Drag it to the Desktop, and log out/in or restart.
Attempting to install a newer version as you have discovered will not work.

  • Address Book window not visible

Have a strange problem with Address Book on a friend's new 27-inch iMac.
When Address Book is launched, the menus appear at the top of the screen but there is no window. Some menu items are greyed out but some are visible. Have tried various things:
Window > Address Book does not make the window appear. Repaired permissions, removed .plist files.
Can view the Address Book entries from the Address Book button in Mail.
    Any ideas, anyone?

Start by backing up the user/Library/Application Support/Addressbook folder.
In that folder is a file called AddressBook-v22.abcddb. Delete that and start address book. That will delete the index and have AB recreate it. I don't know if that is the problem, but may be.
On a different tack, download and install the 10.6.3 combo updater. It may fix what is broken. However, most problems are data-related, not the application itself.
Can you log into a different user and open Address Book? Just create a new user account for testing, if there isn't another. I keep one just for checking stuff like this. Checking in a different user will tell us if it is a system-wide problem, or just that one particular user.

  • How can I customise the fields shown in the main Thunderbird address book window?

When I click the odd-looking icon (a book with an arrow?) at the top of the vertical slider, I get a list of only 13 fields. I can display, hide and rearrange these fields. But I cannot see how to access any of the other fields in the address book, which I would prefer to see in the main window.
(I know the fields are there because, yes, I can see these fields for individual entries. Also they appear in an exported csv file.)

Quit Address Book then delete ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/AddressBook-v22.abcddb - it will be rebuilt from data in the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata folder.

  • Address Book Windows Moves

I like to run all of my applications such that the windows space is maximized. In Address Book, I move the upper left corner of the app to the upper left corner of the desktop. Then, I drag the lower right corner of the app into the far lower right corner of the desktop.
Unfortunately, with each successful quit and re-launch of the program, the top of the Address Book app window migrates down a few pixels. If I do this over and over, I get a significantly smaller window that is just more of an annoyance than anything. I have tested this out with display Macs in the Apple Store and Address Book behaves the same way. Does anyone know if this is fixable?

    Snow Leopard fixed this.

  • What's with the double window appearing out of nowhere in Address Book?

There is one window visible all through the Time Machine process until the very end when suddenly a phantom Address book window appears.
    To recreate:
    Open Address Book
    Open Time Machine
Scroll to the oldest address book window in TM
    Click Cancel
TM returns to present and as TM quits the two windows appear.

I duplicated this, and indeed, a second window shows up. However, it vanishes in less than a second on my machine. I believe it's the one shown while in Time Machine mode; apparently, when viewing the address book, Time Machine moves back to "real time" before closing the window, the opposite of what one usually sees. Are you saying that in your case, the second window stays open?

  • My address book randomly "disappears" behind my compose window. Just started happening. How do I fix or reload firefox?

While in the "compose" page of my email account with Cox.net I have the following problem. When I click on the "To" icon, my address book appears and functions properly for a short time, then mysteriously disappears behind the "compose" window. I have to minimize the "compose" window in order to expose the address book window and complete my selection of recipients. This is a new problem that occurred in the last two days. Can you help me correct this issue?

Exactly what Shootist007 states - take it in for service or replacement - could be a simple software issue or it could be a hardware issue...
Don't even bother messing with it.....Might screw up even more.....
Make sure your files are backed up in case they give you a replacement....
Good luck - hope you get it sorted out...

  • Address Book's window moves down 3 pixels every time you start the app.

I want to confirm that this is not an isolated issue and to make a bit more noise because Apple didn't fix this in the 10.5.3 update. The problem is that the Address Book's window moves down 3 pixels from it's previous position every time you start the app. This only happens if the Address Book window is sized vertically larger than minimum. Now, each time you quit and start Address book it will reposition it's window 3 pixels down. After some time and many Quit/Starts your window will end up at the bottom of your screen and even size itself down to vertical minimum. If you have it positioned so that the bottom of the window protrudes off the screen then it will continue until it reaches the top bar of the window. It's not a serious bug I know. But, for the way I use Address Book it's annoying to have to reposition it's window to align with my other apps which I have open aligned/arranged at startup. It's just that all the other Leopard apps don't do this. Maybe it's a feature added to avoid patent infringement. Who knows! Apple I know you have bigger fish to fry but would you please clean this up.
To test first start Address Book and size your Address Book window vertically larger than its smallest size. Now repeatedly quit and start the Address Book application. Watch your Address Book window migrate down 3 pixels from it's previous position every time you start. Have fun, watching Address Book falls from grace. Good thing it doesn't migrate off screen completely!

    Hey! It works! Nice catch
Gee, now if the rest of Leopard would work properly they would even have the time to fix this

  • ICloud for Windows Not Displaying Contacts in Outlook Address Book

I am trying to setup my iCloud account in Outlook 2013. I have installed the iCloud Control Panel applet and it is all setup fine, I can see all my emails, my contacts are in the people section and I can see my Calendars in the Calendar section. But when I try to search my contacts in the Address Book window there are no Contacts to search. When I try to make the contacts visible in the address book by right clicking on the contacts folder the option is greyed out.
I have read everything I can find about it online and tried every trick that I have come across but nothing seems to work. I have tried changing the default data file, I have tried recreating the PST files and signing in and out of iCloud reinstall the iCloud control panel Applet. Nothing seems to work.
Does anyone have this working? If so how did you do it?
Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide.
    Kind Regards,
    Gryffon-G-Wiz

    Address books aren't email.
You need to export them from yahoo and import them to Thunderbird. Yahoo will probably offer CSV ("comma separated values") format which Thunderbird can use.

  • Address Book: can't "re-open" window once I closed it (Command-W)

I closed the Address Book window (Command-W) and now want to "re-open" it. So I press Command-Tab to get to Address Book and I can't "re-open" Address Book so I can see it again!

    Someone gave me this answer....
Actually, there is, as I recently found out....much to my astonishment. It is a bit hard to describe, but actually easy to do. If you have minimized a window to the Dock, use the Command-Tab shortcut to get to the application. With the application selected press the Option key and release the Command key. One minimized window of the application will become un-minimized (if you have more than one minimized application window, you have to un-minimize the other windows the old fashioned way). If the application is hidden, the same steps will make it reappear: Command-Tab to the application, press the Option key and release the Command key.

  • Address Book Search allows no typing in its window; how can I fix this?

From the Address Book window I select Search Addresses... from the Edit drop-down menu. I then see the window as shown in http://en.flossmanuals.net/thunderbird/address-book-basics/# but it won't accept any typing.

Can you search successfully from the search/filter window at top right of the address book itself? - Yes
Do you see all the addresses as you'd expect in the imported address book? - Yes & no. All the fields seem to have been imported all right. I can see them for an individual. Also, I can see them all when I export the address book to a csv file. BUT I can't properly see them in the main window of the address book.
When I click the odd-looking icon (a book with an arrow?) at the top of the vertical slider, I get a list of only 13 fields. I can display, hide and rearrange these fields. But I cannot see how to access any of the other fields in the address book.

  • I upgraded to Snow Leopard, made a change to Address Book that I need to correct, tried to use Time Machine to find the prior version and it keeps pulling up the later ones info. How do I use Time Machine to restore Address Book from a few hours ago?

This morning, I upgraded to Snow Leopard from v10.5.8. Then, I exported 11 contacts from our old Now Contact database, intending to import that info into Address Book. It was an experiment, as we have 1199 contacts in 20+ categories and want to eventually get them into Bento from Address Book. The export automatically created a file called Export.vcf on the desktop, after I highlighted the 11 contacts. I tried to look at the info, but when clicked it opens Address Book, which then simply asked if I wanted to import the 11 contacts to it. I clicked yes. Then in checking Address Book 7, not 11 contacts appeared. I clicked on "All Contacts" and there were 1630. We only have 1199, so where did the extra 400+ come from? Since I had already clicked twice on the Address Book window, I couldn't undo the import. So I thought 'Ok, I'll trash Address Book and go to Time Machine, find Address Book, go to right after the upgrade to SL, hit Restore and bingo. Nope. I keep getting the post-import info, not pre. Con someone direct me to a solution? I want to get rid of the import contacts plus the extra 300 or so ( I already had a hundred or so in several categories)? Then, I need to figure out (1) why ALL the old records were exported from Now Contact, (2) where they were hiding in that .vcf file when Address Book recognized that I only wanted to export 11, (3) why Address Book showed only 7 imports in the "Last Import" group, but showed ALL my contacts in the "All Contact" group, even though they should nearly all have been safely untouched in the Now Contact DBase file. PS, I am not especially computer savvy. Thanks for any enlightenment.

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • How Do I Load Info From One Address Book to Another?

I'm setting up a new mail / address book for a member of the family.
We have loader her email settings and imported her emails. She wants to use my address book data. (I know we can't use the same address data but just want to start her out with the stuff in my book).
We use different accounts on the same iMac.

That's not the way to do it. Instead, do this:
From your copy of Address Book, select the All group and export it as a single vCard; this will include every contact in your Address Book.
Copy that file to the other account on the Mac. Launch Address Book there and then drag & drop that vCard file you copied over onto the open Address Book window; that will import all the contacts.

  • HT2486 My address book only displays e-mails. How can I sync it with my i-phone to display the address book the same way as my contacts in my i-phone?

Currently my address book only displays e-mail addresses. It uses the portion of the address in front of the @ as the name. How can I sync it with my i-phone 4S that has name/numbers and addresses of my contacts?

    Hello there, Seta.
You are correct that this can be done with iCloud. The following Knowledge Base article provides some great instruction for syncing contacts:
iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1296
    Particularly:
    Contacts, Calendars, Bookmarks, and Notes
You can sync contacts, calendars, bookmarks, and notes with other applications on your computer. This allows you to keep all your information in sync across multiple computers and iOS devices. The settings for these items are all in the Info tab for your iOS device in iTunes. With your iOS device connected to the computer, select your iOS device. Then click the Info tab.
For details on syncing content on your iOS device with your computer, click the sections below.
    Contacts
To sync contacts with your computer, choose "Sync Contacts with" within iTunes for Windows, or "Sync Contacts" in OS X v10.8, or "Sync Address Book Contacts" in OS X v10.7 and earlier.
You can sync your contacts with:
Microsoft Outlook 2003, Microsoft Outlook 2007, Microsoft Outlook 2010 (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
    Windows Address Book (Windows XP)
Windows Contacts (Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
Address Book (Mac OS X v10.7 and earlier)
    Contacts (Mac OS X v10.8)
Microsoft Entourage 2004, Microsoft Entourage 2008, or Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac
    Notes:
When syncing contacts, you can choose to sync all of your contacts or only selected groups. The option to sync selected items may not show up until after the first sync.
You can select a group of contacts to which all new contacts created on your iOS device will be added.
Additional options for syncing include syncing your contacts with Yahoo or Gmail/Google Mail. You will need to configure it with the user name and password for your Yahoo or Google account.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • How can i print the e-mail address book

I need to be able to share the address book. How can I print the contents

There is no good way that I have found to print them directly from Thunderbird.
The best way that I have found is to export the address book to a comma separated file, .csv file, then open that with Excel or Open Office, format the file like you want and print from there.
The added benefit of doing this is now you have a backup file of your address book in case something bad happens.
The Export command is under Tools in the Address Book window.
