Address Book Won't Launch after re-installing system.

Hope someone has a suggestion here. I just installed a new HD and made a nice clean install of system, starting with original that came with my 1st edition G5 Tower and then upgraded to 10.3, then to 10.4.11 (which is where I stop), performing the Apple Software updates along the way. Everything seems to be fine. Boots extremely fast, just like when it was a baby.
Everything except Address Book. I had been importing e-mails, etc. from my 2nd HD so that I could erase it and went to import from my old Address Book and it won't launch. Does the little animation in the Dock, but immediately quits. If I try to open it through Mail, it immediately kills the Mail application.
I really don't want to have to go through the lengthy installation process again. Does anone have any thoughts as to what might be causing this? Even the version of Address Book on my 2nd HD is doing the same thing.
Any help would be appreciated.
Jim C.

Ok. For those who are interested, I did a search and was able to find some things to look for. Bottom line is that it is now fixed. For some reason, the required info was not contained within the new system's Application Support directory. In comparing the same directory on both the new system and the one on my 2nd HD, I discovered that there was only one thing in the new directory, while the directory of the other system had many things (including Address Book and DVD Player).
I hadn't yet launched DVD Player since installing, when I did, I got an error indicating that there was an error starting DVD Player. I copied the directory from the 2nd system into the Application Support on the new system and it then launched instantly.
I'm not sure why these things didn't get placed in Application Support under normal installation, but that is what the problem was.

Suddenly, Address Book won't launch in Leopard. It worked after initial installation but now won't open. I have tried re-syncing with .Mac, re-starting. Address Book info (e-mail addresses) is still accurate and available in Mail.
I also installed Leopard on my Mac Book. No problems, Address book works fine.

  • Address Book won't launch

    Hello!
Sorry, if this has been covered before, but for some google hours I couldn't find any answer. Address Book doesn't launch: "The application Address Book quit unexpectedly. ... ... Relaunch". Relaunching doesn't work either. And this is the first time I try to launch this app. (The Console report is below.)
Using Disc Utility I've repaired permissions, verified disc successfully; then trashed the com.apple.addressbook.plist file, cleared font cache, disabled all non-system fonts, enabled all fonts, switched user –all with no luck. One thing I've noticed is that there is not any font in the Monotype Sorts font folder.
    Can you help?

I use free AppCleaner, but it does not always remove everything. Gmail Notifier, for instance, installs some other things around.
No, an uninstaller would and should not replace Applescript, and I understand that it's a very convenient utility for the ones competent and eager enough to learn it. And I like that.
What is annoying is that you can't extract any practical understanding when you click "Help" and go to the web page. Increadably, you click and click and click on the links and all you get is the same simple abstract descriptions and the complicated side issues. Neither the uninspiring built-in examples help.
I don't expect to be an Applescript expert in a minute, but Apple could do much better to give some working knowledge. Instead it says again and again that Applescript has a language of its own and uses the Applescript dictionaries of certain applications. Well, I understand that, but when I look into those dictionaries I understand nothing.
Why not explain those terms in dictionaries, at least some basic ones, and give usage EXAMPLES? Why not say: "Now we're going to write an Applescript. Open the Applescript dictionary of application x. Now you'll see the term x there; it means this and the other term y means that. Now put that term in Script Editor window...."

  • Address Book doesn't launch after OS Upgrade

After upgrading from Jaguar OS 10.2.8 to Panther OS 10.3, I had a problem with my Mac which I've now resolved by performing an 'Archive Installation' of 10.3. I've run Sofware Update so I'm now running 10.3.9.
Everything seems to work fine now apart from Address Book. If I launch the application, it appears to be running (there is a small black arrow below the icon in the dock indicating that it is running) but there is no visible interface window. If I command-click the Address Book icon in the dock, I get the option of Force Quitting - 'Application Not Responding'.
I don't want to have to re-install my OS again if I can help it. I've tried Repairing Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, but it didn't help. I've also tried re-installing Address Book using CharlesSoft's Pacifist utility - that didn't help either. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Did not have fonts Lucida Grande and Helvetica activated in Font Book. Once activated Address Book functions as normal.

  • Finder won't launch after re-install 7.1

I reinstalled QT 7.1 after having problems with 7.2. I was getting only audio and no video. After the reinstall I rebooted and now the finder won't launch so I can't see my hard drive or any icons on my desktop. And oddly enough the only app that will open is safari and quicktime now works!
What have I done and any clue on what just happened?

There is no "re-install" of older software versions allowed in OS X.
The only safe way to revert to previous versions is by Archive and Install using the Tiger DVD.

  • Address Book won't launch (just hangs) - need advice

    Hi all,
I can't seem to launch Address Book. I have OS 10.4.10 (the problem has been there since 10.4.9) on a MacBook Pro (2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of RAM). No matter what I do Address Book just hangs there and won't launch, even if I restart and try it with no other applications running. Are there any known conflicts? How should I go about resolving this? It's destroying my so called life :<(
    Thanks,
    Robert

Back in your normal account drag folder Application Support/Addressbook and file Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist (both in the Library in your Home directory) to the desktop. Start Address Book and report back.

  • Mac book won't boot after security install

I've experienced major issues ever since the update to 10.5.5. I've performed the disk repair a few times, but the computer kept freezing, or it would quit my application with no warning, so I did an archive and install. It seemed to be working fine, although safari wasn't showing some content, so I ran the software update to update the system to see if it would work better. It was closing safari a few times, but after the security update tonight, I cannot get the system to boot.
I've held the shift key to try and start is safe boot... that worked once, when I went to restart it wouldn't start. I've tried to start form the DVD, it won't start by holding the c key at start up.
I've tried the option key at start up and selected the DVD, won't start.
Several times I'll get the gray screen with the apple for about a minute, then the computer just turns off.
Any suggestions besides take it in to get serviced?

I also tried the fsck thing..there were some errors showing.. and the end message said something like it cannot repair.. then exit 8.
It's always better to boot into the Safe mode (hold down Shift key during boot) rather than manually run fsck. The safe boot runs fsck.
I hope the Apple Care will take care of the issue.
It may not be your HD. It could be that all your data are intact but that a controller or some other hardware is bad.
Whenever we install software, updates, etc., we use areas of the HD that were unused. This is why it's not a coincidence that many failures occur during a software install/update. Updates exercise hardware much more than do many standard apps. Even when storing a large file, a failure does not do much damage, but when installing a system program or update, any HD failure can result in disaster.

  • Apache won't launch after MySQL install

I just installed PHP and MySQL in order to learn it. I installed PHP and everything worked fine, I tried out some basic PHP functions and then decided to get MySQL so I could do some more advanced functions.
After installing MySQL I couldn't reach my own site through 127.0.0.1, and I entered the terminal and found out that Apache wasn't running, so I gave the command "sudo httpd" and got the following output:
    sudo httpd
    Processing config directory: /private/etc/httpd/users/*.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/+entropy-php.conf
[Mon May 15 00:25:24 2006] [warn] module mod_php5.c is already added, skipping
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/Helena.conf
    Processing config file: /private/etc/httpd/users/hulken.conf
    Bus error
I have tried both with MySQL stopped and running, but it makes no difference, what should I do?
    PowerMac G4 MDD, iBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I've read through the file thoroughly several
times and it is all good, nothing seems to be missing
    or be malplaced.
Good, but let's make sure. First, look at the output of this Terminal command:
<pre class="command">grep Documents /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.default</pre>You should get something like this:
    <pre class="command">DocumentRoot "/Library/WebServer/Documents"
    <Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents">
    Alias /manual/ "/Library/WebServer/Documents/manual/"
<Directory "/Library/WebServer/Documents/manual"></pre>If you don't, or you get an error message, post back with the result. If you get the same thing as what I posted, try swapping the default config file for the one you have now. First do this:
<pre class="command">sudo mv /etc/httpd/httpd.conf /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.cmbak</pre>That will back up the current configuration file. Now, copy the default config file so Apache sees it:
    <pre class="command">sudo cp /etc/httpd/httpd.conf.default /etc/httpd/httpd.conf</pre>Try starting the server now:
<pre class="command">sudo apachectl start</pre>If it starts, then it's a configuration problem. If it still crashes (bus error), then look for a crash log for httpd in your Console app. I suspect it'll be in /Library/Logs/CrashReporter. Post back with the contents of the thread that crashed. That might have a clue.
One more thing, post the output of this Terminal command:
    <pre class="command">ls -l /etc/httpd/users/*</pre>I'd be looking for a file Apache can't open perhaps.
I haven't made any modifications to
it, it was working fine until I tried it after
    installing MySQL.
It's really unlikely to be MySQL. If I had to take a guess right now, I'd say it's a problem caused by installing the PHP5 stuff. I can't think of any reason why MySQL would affect Apache, but because the PHP5 installation is changing Apache's config files, I'd suspect that first.

  • Photoshop CS6 won't launch after successful installing the upgrade on my PC

After a successful installation process, Photoshop CS6 opens, starts to load, then vanishes....   I'm on a PC where I'd been running CS5, then upgraded to CS6 via internet. Had problems with installation setup, which were settled via Adobe Chat. Now the programme starts up ready to open but shortly after the PS sign comes up and before the window actually opens, just disapears. Can anybody help with this please?

Ok, I found one more article talking about upgrading to 11.3 upgrade instead of 11.4(latest). Finaly worked. Hope this helps someone else, this was painful.

  • Please help -- Address Book Crashing on Launch, causing problems with Mail

    Problem:
Address Book crashes on launch. Mail crashes on launch as soon as it tries to access address book. Can't use either program.
    History:
First noticed problem after an out-of-hard-disk space problem. Had about 2 GB left on the 80 GB hard drive in my 1 GHz iMac G4. Was comparing two very large TIFF files in Photoshop when it crashed because it had used up all the available scratch disk space. Mail and Address Book were also open at the time, along with a number of other apps.
After re-starting, Mail began crashing on launch. There had been a message open at the time of the first crash, and it appeared that the crash was happening as soon as Mail went to Address Book to find the sender's image for that message. The crash report showed that Address Book was the thread that failed.
Tried to launch Address Book; crashes on launch.
    Both applications refuse to launch.
(Have also noticed that Safari crashes when entering text in a field -- good thing I have an iBook to use to post this plea for help!)
    Attempted Solutions:
    Scoured these discussions for suggestions.
    Trashed preferences, re-started & re-launched; no luck.
Repaired permissions and disk repeatedly until squeaky clean
Used Pacifist to re-install sync services, address book, mail; no luck
Re-run Combo Update PPC 10.4.6; no luck
Have now done a full Archive and Install, re-installed the 10.4.6 combo update and the most recent security update, and verified permissions and disk.
Problem still persists -- which suggests it's something in my User library, I presume, but I'm out of ideas. Very tired and frustrated -- please help!
I've copied the most recent pertinent information from Address Book's Crash Log and posted below. Let me know if I need to post anything else, or logs from other apps. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem, everyone!

I'm no expert on Address Book, but I can tell you that the files involved in the crash could be HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and anything in HOME/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/. It looks like you have ignored this latest folder so far. I would try moving both items to the Desktop, restart, and see whether that stops the crashes.

  • 10.4.7 update and now my Address Book won't open

I recently ran a software update and the Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 errored out. After the required restart I now find my Address Book won't open.
Any advise to fix this problem?
Is it safe to run the 10.4.7 update again or will this problem repeat?

    hi there--
i would check out this thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1863756&#1863756 basically, try repairing permissions first. then if that does nothing, see if you have your addressbook.data file. it's possible you could rename a file like this user to regain your info. if the addressbook.data file is there, select it and get info on it by pressing the apple and i on the keyboard. ensure that you have read/write access to the folder. make yourself the owner and make the rest of the fields as open as possible. also, if the address book launches in a different user (you could create a test user) you could do a number of things. if you have a backup of the address book in another place you can try pulling the com.apple.addressbook.plist from the preferences folder in the home user library. do not do this if you have no backup. also you could check ~library/address book plug-ins. if there's stuff in there, try pulling folder to desktop and restarting the computer. keep me posted as to whether or not you make any progress.
