Address Book won't stop synching with .mac

Address Book keeps Syncing with .mac even though I don't want it to and I did not extend the free .Mac trial.
I turned off "Synchronize my contacts with other computers using .Mac" in the Address Book preferences.
I can not however turn off "Synchronize with .Mac" in the .Mac preferences (it is dimmed) and even though it says "Manual" the Address books continues to sync and leaves me with an empty address book every day!!!!!
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Thanks for a quick response. I don't see a way to print the address and phone number on a mailing label either. Some people still like their paper address books and I thought printing labels would make it a lot easier to read and I could just print labels for Christmas cards - instead of handwriting them. nice thought, I guess.
(note to apple: please fix in your next update)

Hi there ... not sure why but Mail has stopped automatically synching with my .mac account. I haven't changed any settings and it has been working well for almost a year. For some reason now I need to go to the menu "Mailbox -> "Synchronize .Mac Account". I am using OS 10.3.9. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Address book won't syncronize (automatically) with Google

I recently noticed there was a synchronize with Google contacts on address book, so I set it up, logged in okay, and closed the preferences window.
then nothing happened. It doesn't sync unless I have the sync logo in the menubar and click 'Sync now'.
Google also offers exchange for contacts and calendars, would this work on address book or is that unnecessary?
Either way: why isn't it working? cheers!

  • Address Book won't sync with .Mac address book

When I attempt to sync the address book contatcs on my Powerbook with .Mac, after much spinning and churning, it get the error message:
"An inconsistency was detected on .Mac for your Contacts data. You may want to reset .Mac from a computer with good data."
This is the ONLY computer with this contact data. There is no other computer with "good data" to reset .Mac from. I have 776 contacts on this computer and it is my work base. .Mac only has 103 contacts. Sereiously, this is not a joke. You must be prepared to fix your gross errors with this software.
.Mac sync is probably the worse software implementation on the Apple platform. It has wiped on critical and important data on many occasions my cell phone and my wives Motorola phones. Getting errror messages such as these are alarming and terribly distressing. Where have Apple's standards for quality gone?

You must be on OS X 10.7 in order to use iCloud.
OS X 10.7 (Lion) is available in the App Store as a digital download. It is $29. Best practice - be sure to make a backup copy of your computer before upgrading any software.
After you download and install 10.7 Lion, you will have an iCloud icon in System Preferences.

  • Contacts and Mac OS Address Book won't sync anymore

I have an iPod touch, 2nd generation, with iOS 4.2.1, which has worked perfectly well for years.
Since I got an iPad 2 with iOS 5.0.1, and iTunes 10.5.1, and set up iCloud, and synced the iPad to my Mac, now my iPod touch will no longer sync any address book entries between iOS Contacts and Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion's Address Book.
I've tried restoring the iPod touch to its factory-fresh setting and syncing with the Mac. I've tried rebuilding the Mac OS Address Book index, and repairing permissions on Mac OS X. Nothing seems to help.
Another clue is that the iPod touch Contacts stopped syncing at 512 Contact entries, while the Mac's Address Book had 521 entries. I think 512 is a suspicious number; is it an upper limit on entries that sync with iTunes and Address Book?
    Any help would be appreciated.

The messaget is correct, that is, your iCloud calendar will no longer be on your Mac as long as you are signed out of iCloud.  Your calendars will still be on you iPhone and on iCloud.  After syncing your contacts to your iTouch, you then sign back into iCloud on your Mac and everything will be back as it was before you signed out.  I did it on my Mac and have all my calendars and contacts as well as my wife's iTouch has all calendars and contacts.
You seem to be concerned about losing data, which is a valid concern.  Do you back up your Mac using Time Machine?  It is a great resource installed on the Mac to assure that if you commit any errors that resutls in the loss of data, then you can easlily restore it via Time Machine.  If you have not been backing up your Mac then consider doing it.  The Apple Store sales personnel recommended to me the LaCie Storage devices since they easily interconnect with the Mac.  A Google search will find them at competitive prices as compard to what Apple charges.  I am so paranoid about losing data that I have three separate 1TB LaCie drives backing up my Mac.  I will be installing a forth as a network backup drive for my wife's Mac and my MacBook Air.

  • BOTH computers have suddenly stopped synching with my Treo

    Howdy -
I've been battling this for a week. First my home Mac, then my work Mac, within days of each other (no more than a week, maybe) stopped synching with my Treo. And I think the problem is with both computers!
Reason: The problem is clearly with the Transport Monitor on the Palm Desktop HotSynch. It ain't there. And before you ask, I've redownloaded the latest desktop (I already had the latest to begin with!), and restarted, several times on both computers in the past week.  The EXACT same things happen:
    - attempt at Hotsynch yields nothing on the computers. No reaction, no connection, no communication.
    -  Open Hotsynch on desktop; low and behold, Hotsynch is DISABLED - Ok; click on Enabled......and 5 seconds later, by itself, it DISABLES itself again.
--- and gives an error message:  "Transport Monitor  could not complete your request. (16)."
Ah-hah; that's why there's no communication with the Treo when it tries to Hotsynch, he says smugly.  I'll check the Palm Folder.......checking....well, the Transport Monitor icon is there.  Huh.
    - simplest thing:  re-download and install latest Desktop.  Done. Restart.
    - now, that's funny; while the computer was rebooting, that same darn error message came up:   "Transport Monitor  could not complete your request. (16)."
This is before the computer is 100% restarted even.  It's almost like, during the restart process, when it checked (or tried to enable, I guess?) Transport Monitor, it was failing right there.
    - Try to Hotsynch - again, Palm desktop doesn't even know it's happening; no communication with the Treo.  (And no "Transport Monitor" error message, either; maybe because it doesn't know it's there?).  Nothing.
    - Go check. HotSynch; yup, same thing; Hotsynch is DISABLED - and won't allow itself to be enabled.  Go to Palm Folder, and yup, Transport Monitor appears to be right there, size 360kb.
If there is a problem recognizing Transport monitor, even AFTER it is ENABLED; or, replaced with a brand new transport monitor (via the Desktop download)..... then he thinks he'll: trash the Transport Monitor.  Empty the Mac trash. Restart.  Then redownload the Desktop which includes a totally pristine Transport Monitor!
    Ok!  Restart.....
    - and the exact same thing happens.   During the Mac restart after yet another Palm Desktop download, that darn Transport Monitor error message comes up, just on the restart.  Then repeat all the testing and checking above......nothing has changed.
AND THIS ALL HAS OCCURRED ON TWO SEPARATE MACS - one at work, one at home.  And while they don't have identical software applications (naturally), they are acting exactly the same with this Palm Desktop error, too the tee - and they failed in this within one week of each other.
Both MacBooks are almost identical; both less than a year old; one with 4 gig RAM, one with 2 gig ram.  Both running 10.5.7 . (Question: Is it possible for me to find out when each computer was updated to 10.5.7? Could that be the problem?? Or another of the common applications; e.g, I have the same version of Microsoft mac Office on both).
Guys, I haven't been able to hotsynch with EITHER computer for two weeks now - which for my lifestyle is unacceptable. "Help me, Obi- wan; you're......."
    Standing by.....
    Dave

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. • Address Book Sync running slow parallels and mac (iCloud)

Briefly, every time that "address book sync" becomes active on the Mac side, the computer on both the Mac and the Windows side becomes incredibly slow, almost usable. If I disable the "address book sync" through the activity monitor (force quit), the computer on both the Mac and Windows side restores to normal speed. I have 4 CPU's on this MAc book pro and i have configured parallels to 2 for the Mac side and 2 for the Windows side. I have also allocated 2GB of memory to the Windows 7 side which is within the recommended range of 512MB to 4GB (Maximum memory is 16BG).
I have also noticed in "activity monitor" that the process name "prl_vm_app" can run as high as 200% of cpu usage and vary anywhere from its current level whilst writing this email of 5% upwards. This does not however seem to affect the speed of the computer and again this is being caused by "address book sync". For information I am running Outlook on the windows side and using "contacts" and this is also being replicated on the mac side in "contacts". Whenever I update or enter a new contact in the windows side (Contacts in outlook) then address book sync starts shortly after on the Mac side and the computer slows considerably.
I have iCloud working on the mac side and windows side syncing my contacts calendar etc.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the same problem too. My iphone is not syncing with my addressbook on the mac, no matter what I try, it is very very frustrating!!

  • Apple Address Book Won't Open

On my iMac G5, my Apple Address Book won't open. It has been working perfectly and I've never had a problem since buying the computer about a year ago. Though the name appears on the top menu bar and the triangle shows beneath the Address Book icon on the Dock, nothing appears on the screen. I ran the Disk Utility Repair Permissions, but aht didn't correct it. I've rebooted and that didn't solve the issue either. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
I don't know how to troubleshoot Address Book, other than replacing its data with a backup copy if you have one, or just getting rid of that data. Address Book stores the preferences in ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist, and everything else in the ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook folder.
You may try moving those files out of there, to the Desktop. You may try removing just the com.apple.AddressBook.plist preferences file (so that Address Book re-creates it again), for example, or removing just AddressBook.data and renaming AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data. Whatever you do, make a backup copy of those files first, just in case.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder.

  • HT2486 My address book won't work

I just installed Snow Leopard and now my address book won't open. It says I have address book 4.1.2, but I can't find an update or anything for it. Help please! I need my addresses!

The latest version of address book for 10.6.8 is 5.0.3
You could apply, if you haven't already (or) reapply the combo update  Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
That should solve your problem.  You should also check out software update for things like the new security update 2012 004.

  • 10.4.7 update and now my Address Book won't open

I recently ran a software update and the Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 errored out. After the required restart I now find my Address Book won't open.
Any advise to fix this problem?
Is it safe to run the 10.4.7 update again or will this problem repeat?

    hi there--
i would check out this thread. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1863756&#1863756 basically, try repairing permissions first. then if that does nothing, see if you have your addressbook.data file. it's possible you could rename a file like this user to regain your info. if the addressbook.data file is there, select it and get info on it by pressing the apple and i on the keyboard. ensure that you have read/write access to the folder. make yourself the owner and make the rest of the fields as open as possible. also, if the address book launches in a different user (you could create a test user) you could do a number of things. if you have a backup of the address book in another place you can try pulling the com.apple.addressbook.plist from the preferences folder in the home user library. do not do this if you have no backup. also you could check ~library/address book plug-ins. if there's stuff in there, try pulling folder to desktop and restarting the computer. keep me posted as to whether or not you make any progress. • Address book won't save changes to note field

Like the header says. Address book won't save changes to note field. There's another thread with the same header:  https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2591053?threadID=2591053  But it's archived so I had to post this new one.
If I made a change in any non-note field however, it would stay.
Note: the notes field can be edited with actually having to go into official "edit" mode. Does this make it more prone to corruption? Why would Apple make the notes field NOT need that extra step of protection. Do they think my notes aren't as important?  How would they know?
I fixed this one card with a bandaid solution by exporting it and reimporting it.  But I guess I need to do that with all 2,000 of my contacts now. It was mentioned on theother thread that somebody made an address book backup and then deleted every contact in the address book and imported them fresh from the backup and that worked.
The underlyilng issue is still not solved though. How could this happpen in the first place, and how do I know what other contacts haven't held lthe changes I thought I made?

    Hi,
    Using the Note field
You can add notes to any contact in Address Book. This makes it easy to keep track of details about a person in your address book.
Select the person in the Name column in Address Book, then click the Note field in the card.
The Note field can be edited at any time, even if the card is not in edit mode.
You could make a dedicated field that requires the edit button...
    Using custom labels
You can change the label that appears next to a piece of information on a contact's card. For example, you might want to change "work" to "support" next to a phone number.
Select the contact that you want to change.
Click the Edit button at the bottom of the window.
Click the label next to a field, then choose Custom from the pop-up menu.
Enter a new label for the field.
The new custom label appears on this contact's card only.
If you want to change a specific label on all cards in your Address Book, edit the card template. Choose Address Book > Preferences and click Template. The Template pane also allows you to add other types of fields on contact cards, such as a nickname, job title, birthday, anniversary, and URL. Use the Add Field menu.
