Address book wont open

Hello
Maybe someone can figure this out. When I click my "address book" in the dock I get a big"?". I can open and get info. when using dashboard. I recently installed MS Word and had to reinstall "Ical" and "appleworks". Hopefully I don't have to do that. Is there a simple solution?

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, proceed as follows:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/, and try to open Address Book by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.

Address Book Never Opens

I have looked over many postings and have tried some of them. However, I am unable to get my address book to open (it just flashes in and out of the dock) at all. Here is a selection from my crash log. Any suggestions?

You say you reinstalled Address Book, but haven’t explained how, which is essential information that you should have provided from the very beginning. It appears you “reinstalled” it by copying it from another computer running a different version of Mac OS X (10.4.10), which is a really bad idea.
Regardless of what the original problem was, fixing the problem you currently have would require either properly reinstalling Address Book, or updating the whole system to the version of Mac OS X that the version of Address Book you currently have installed expects to be running on.
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, in the Finder go to /Applications/, move Address Book to the Trash, and reinstall it as described in the second part of the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Note that Address Book may appear grayed out in the installer, but will be checked if you check Applications there, and will be installed if it has been removed from the /Applications/ folder.
If the version of the system software on the Install discs is earlier than what you’re running now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re running, to bring Address Book back in sync with the rest of the system:

Alternatively, you may want to install the latest Combo Update instead, as Henry suggested, which should make reinstalling Address Book itself first unnecessary:

After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.

Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails....

When emailing a group from address book it opens individual emails for each name rather than one email with all email addresses listed. Have I set things up wrongly or is there something I can do to have a single email sent to multiple addressees via Address Book?

Yes, it works directly in Mail - type in group name and all's well and lovely - but if I'm in Address Book and want to email a group it opens numerous emails. THere seems to be no way of opening Mail from Address Book and go straight to emailing a group.

Address Book mysteriously opens

I'll be working and all of a sudden Address Book will open for a second or two and then quit. It makes me wonder if someone is maliciously trying to get my contact information. I can't see that I have any event scheduled that would open it.
Anyone hear of this happening or have any suggestions as to why this would be happening? Thanks!

You have a piece of software such as a Dashboard widget, or a plug-in, or a system utility, or something like that, that requires Address Book to be running for whatever it does.

Every time I open Address Book (Lion) it opens to the same vcard with the same name in the search field. How do I keep this from happening? I have tried deleting the vcard, deleting the plist, and importing/exporting my contact. However, the search field contents are alwyas the same - even if I delete the field, close, and re-open. You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]].
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. Then you can set your homepage to anything you like.

Address book not opening

My address book is not opening in Leopard, I get a message saying that address book does not work in this version of OSX, can anyone enlighten?

I didn't to my knowledge do an archive and install, though the old version was still there, as I just sent it to the trash. Thankfully I was able to extract the new address book using pacifist as you recommended, thanks for that. (useful program )
I have another query, cover-flow is supposed to have pointers if you hold the mouse pointer over a document or movie, so as you can move through a document or open a movie, these pointers don't appear in my cover-flow ???

Address book wont sync with imac

Hi, Just picked up a new 3GS for the wife. The iStore transfered her contacts from her old Sony phone. Problem is when we try to access a contact on the phone it just closes that app and returns to the home screen.
I tried to sync it with our iMac via iTunes but it fails at the last stage and states that the address book is in use on the iPhone, also saying that the contacts must be closed (on the iPhone) and then try again.
I'm stumped. Any help would be great as I dont want to drive to our nearest iStore in B'ham to get it sorted.

Also, just been playing, when I go in through settings to Mail, Contacts, Calendars the phone again just returns to the home screen.

Iphoto book wont open

all was good and then today I was finishing book and it will no longer open. I can open iphoto just fine but when I click on my book I get spinning beachball forever.............I tried shutting computer off going to disk utilities etc..........still the same. Book is done cant get in to order it or open it

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

Bought book wont open in my Nook reading tablet

Hi,
I recently bought (or so I thought) J.K Rowlings "A casual vacancy" at IBooks. Then I moved the book from my Macbook Air to my reading device Nook. It did not look ok because the cover was blank and did not show the right picture. Then when I clicked on the book it did not open... which means that it is not there. I tried to transfer the book again, the result was the same. No book - no contents. There is a picture of a book, but it is not the right one. Can anyone help me?

Ok but I´ve also transferred a free book from ITunes and that worked ok... The few books I´ve managed to load on to my Nook and read all end with .epub, and that format works fine with Nook (including the free book from iTunes).
I should´ve written that I bought Rowling´s book from iTunes, not iBooks... Does that matter?

I would suggest you go to your Dock and open Finder>click on the "McIntosh HD" in the column>click on "Applications" in the next column>the app "Addressbook" should be in the next column's list of your Applications>drag that Addressbook line down down to the dock. If the app Addressbook doesn't appear in your Applications folder list, then you had somehow deleted it and will need to reinstall Snow Leopard, from your Installation Disk, over itself to reinstall your Addressbook app.

i have not used my PalmVx in a few years; however, the database on my Laptop, Inspiron 2650, continued to work until recently. Now it reads: 'the selected port com4 is not available at this time' and ''Error:Failed to open address book' Does anyone know how I get my address book to open again? The 'directions for dummies' works best for me as i am clueless. Many thanks to the kind soul who responds to this email. I've tried online answers for last three hours. to no avail. Anybody..thank you in advance!

Hi, Poeta. Thank you in advance for responding. Six hours later and I fear I"m getting no where fast. When I clicked on my Palm icon, it read what i emailed you: 'the selected port com4 is not available at this time' and ''Error:Failed to open address book' . So, an hour ago, i uninstalled and reinstalled. now a Palm Pilot database/calendar, et al pops up, but NONE OF MY information is there.. In truth, my PalmVx database has not worked on my laptop for one year (since 2008). my handheld has not functioned for a few years - the handheld keeps telling me to 'use stylus to tap center of target'. which is what it told me the first day i opened it in 1999. My PRIORITY is accessing my PalmVx database on my laptop and would appreciate your help in how to Reactivate it. Let me know what you need from me. Again, I am a simpleton when it comes to this tech stuff. Thank you so very much for your thoughtfulness and expertise.
