Address Format Help Needed

Could someone please direct me to some information explaining how Apple deals with Address Formats?
I upgraded to Snow Leopard, then synced. I was syncing from what a perfect version which I had saved on Mobileme before upgrading, and I had not changed anything on the computer after upgrading. I expected it to be straightforward. However, I was told that I had 730 conflicts in Address Book. (That's half my records). When I started to go through these conflicts, I found that they all had something to do with Address Formats. One version, for example, had format 'Japan', and was formatted one way, and another version, had format 'ja', and was formatted another way. Also, sometimes I had 'United Kingdom', and sometimes 'uk'. Actually, there were all sorts of strange conflicts, which is why I'd appreciate some general information that I can study.

Using 'Reset Sync Data', I uploaded a perfect version of my contacts from an ibook running 10.4.11. It was when I tried to download this onto another, new, computer using 10.6 (again using 'Reset Sync Data' that all these conflicts came up. There was nothing on the latter machine for there to be a conflict with.
Thanks for your advice, but if I always choose the side with the full name, then I will be sometimes choosing a side that has an incorrectly written address. And I'm afraid I don't want to have to spend a morning doing this 730 times, as very often I also need to check the address from the original computer.
What I'd like to know is if there is a way to do this without these conflicts. I suppose I could just copy/paste the address data, but then next time I sync, will I get the conflicts again? Why is this happening? What are these two letter codes?

• IP address rules - help needed

I recently bought a Synology DS212j NAS and set it up last week. I'm new to NAS and port forwarding, so I struggled to manually forward the ports on my BT home hub 3, but got there in the end.
I can use my iphone to access my movies & songs on the NAS, using the Synology iphone apps. It works when I am at home, or out and about on 3G or wifi.
The only thing I haven't managed to sort out is the IP address that the iphone app needs to connect to. The NAS created a DDNS IP address for me (I don't really understand what this is, but followed the instructions). This works fine when I am on 3G or away from the home. But when I am at home on my own wifi network, I need to log out of the app and log back in using the 192.168.1.xxx IP address. Using the synology "xxx.synology.me" address doesnt work when at home on wifi. This isn't a big deal, but I would like to get it fixed if possible, it would be nice not to have to log in/out depending on where I am.
Is it possible to somehow make the BT HH3 use the xxxx.synology.me IP address correctly when I am at home using home wifi? Thanks for any help and apologies if anything is unclear.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

This is because the home hub 3 does not support NAT loopback. This is fixed in the latest firmware revision, which is just being rolled out now.

• Date Format help needed

Hello Friends,
I need to mormat my date valye to get something like the following:
Sunday December 3rd, 2006 OR
Tuesday December 5th, 2006
I understand that one can give a custom format for date as per the SimpleDateFormat symbols. However, I did not find anything for achieveing the pattern in bold
Can you please help?
Regards,
Leena

umm.. did not think about it..
I thought on it after reading your post.
My first thoughts for writing my own formatter are that I will have to extend the SimpleDateFormat class, right?
Not sure what do I do next.. :(

• Address.getHostName help needed

Every computer has a Name when connected to the Web via the Internet. The name of my computer when connected is blahblahblah.
Now when I use address.getHostName(), the name of my computer is displayed, blahblahblah.
How and is it possible to use this or perhaps something else to get the Name of any computer connected to the web via the Internet?
Before I get flamed into oblivion, I am not a script kiddie nor a hacker just a developer of Internet related applications.

You may not be a scriptkitten, but you are in err.
Not every computer has a name (DNS-name to be precise) when it connects to the internet. DNS is pure for human readability, DNS is also linked to someone's IP, THAT everyone has.
For example, you have 1 pc connecting to internet using the name mycomputer.tld and another one using 192.168.0.123 (although, that C-Class range is reserverd for internal network).
You could look into DNS and if there are API's for Java for using (talking to) DNS servers. Still you will need to have the ip of the name you are trying to resolve (resolving = getting the DNS-name linked to an IP if any).
Hope this helps you in the right direction,

• Making IP Address field - help needed

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me how to make the IP Address field as displayed in windows operating system network settings.
Actually I have made one IP field using JFormattedTextField and MaskFormatter class.
code is given below:
private MaskFormatter getMf2() {
if (mf2 == null) {
try {
mf2 = new MaskFormatter(" *** . *** . *** . *** ");
mf2.setValidCharacters(" 0123456789");
} catch (Exception e) {
JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, e.toString());
return mf2;
jTextField = new JFormattedTextField(getMf2());
Am I doing anything wrong here?
Problem is its not behaving in the way windows operating system IP field behaves?
Actually I am unable to display 3 dots(.) in the field which look like they are with regular space gap in the jformattedtextfield?
In windows OS, dots in the IP address field will remain static, but with my IP field, they are moving when I am adding values into the field? How to solve this problem?
I have given three spaces in the mask formatter initially? so if I click on the first place, I am unable to type at that place? how to rectify this problem?
Please anyone help me to solve this problem and make proper IP field as it looks in windows operating system. If Any code is available in the web, please provide the link here.

Hi folks,
I am going to install Oracle 10g on SunOS 5.9 and for this the parameter noexec_user_stack has to be set to 1 in /etc/system .I did it and then I rebooted the machine .Then the problems started - 3 filesystems containing oracle installation and oradata was not mouned. When I try to mount them manually, I get
# mount /dev/md/dsk/d36
mount: No such device or address
mount: Cannot open /dev/md/dsk/d36
If I try -
# mount /dev/md/rdsk/d36
mount: mount point cannot be determined
In /etc/vfstab
/dev/md/dsk/d36 /dev/md/rdsk/d36 /local/oracle ufs 3 yes logging
Can someone helpl me? IS this a hardware problem with the disk(and eventually the disk was gone) or it was caused by changing this kernel parameter?
Any help would be appreciated.

You have probelm either with vfstab or you have not created directories where you want to mount the filesystem.

• Data format - Help needed!!!!!

I have a String with this value:"Thu Dec 19 09:23:49 2002" ;
is there a java method to convert it automatically in another string to this format: "19/12/2002" or "12/19/2002" (it depends on italian date)
thanks all!!

As dateString does not seem to be a proper Java term (unless Mr sssako knows something I do not) I would be a string.
You could do it with two instances of SimpleDateFormat, one set up for the format of the string you have and one set up for the format you want.
You then call parse() on the first one to get a date and use that date as the parameter to a call to format on the second one.
String s = "Thu Dec 19 09:23:49 2002";
SimpleDateFormat input = new SimpleDateFormat("E MMMM d HH:mm:ss yyyy");
SimpleDateFormat output = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy");
try
s = output.format( input.parse(s) );
System.out.println(s);
catch ( ParseException e )
e.printStackTrace();
}

• Design / Formatting Help Needed

Good Afternoon,
I am in the process of developing a help system to support a
proprietary green screen application that we use in our
organization… the green screen application is very convoluted
and all steps/processes etc to be completed in the system have many
many steps to complete. In order to not overwhelm the end user, in
any given help topic there are multiple subtopics that are
“hidden” until the DHTML dropdown hot spot is
activated.
Within each hotspot, there are also “sub hot
spots”. However, this is confusing to the user… there
are so many hotspots etc (both hotspots from the main topic page
and “sub” hotspots within a hotspot) that the user is
losing track of where they are at.
I was wondering if anyone had an general design
recommendations or best practice recommendations that I should be
adhering to in order to eliminate this confusion.
Thanks!

I've used hotspots within hotspots without issues. I suggest
you break the information into smaller chunks if you can. If a
particular task is very long, consider making it a book instead of
a single topic. For example, if you assign one topic to each of
five tasks, but the third task involves six steps, turn the third
task into six steps/topics, and bind them as a book in your Help
file. So you'll go from this:
1. Task 1 (single topic)
2. Task 2 (single topic)
3. Task 3 (single topic)
4. Task 4 (single topic)
5. Task 5 (single topic)
To this:
1. Task 1 (single topic)
2. Task 2 (single topic)
3. Task 3 (one book with six topics)
4. Task 4 (single topic)
5. Task 5 (single topic)
This kind of solution should cut down on some of the
nesting.

• Email address shrouding help needed

For years I've shrouded my email address by using encrypted JavaScript code to hide my address from robot address scavengers.
I use Enkoder
Enkoder [and others like it] spits out a short piece of code that replaces the live address. Previous GUI software I've used lets me add the script as part of the hyperlink setup, or, I send the script to my Wordpress coder.
I'd like to use Enkoder within Muse but can't find a backdoor to add the code.
Here's an example of Enkoder code using my email address:

Any ideas?

Vivek,
Apologies for the delayed response. I made a form, as you suggested. However, I often just display my email address or text [with the link] that directs readers to 'click here'. All I want is a shrouded version of my email address that the 'bots have a tough time dealing with [Enkoder provides this].
[email protected]
=

Unless I'm missing something, the forms option is overkill for what I'm trying to do. Generally, competitive software [for example, NetObjects] will allow me to add a replacement script at the place where the shrouding script is required that replaces the actual email address.
Any thoughts?
Steve

• T400 - Accidentaly formatted the disk 1 (IMD-0) partition in disk management - Help Needed

Hello,
Initially when I re-formatted my computer to get rid of the factory image, I found that there was a hidden partition of 1.37GB which I could not touch, meaning i could not delete. I ignored it at that time and formatted my computer and reinstalled vista business on it using the license i got from lenovo. Now after some days, I was kind of getting concerned as to what exactly was the 1.37Gb partition on my computer. I guess I was getting worried as to why I was not able to reclaim that space for normal use. Today, I tried to reclaim it, by deleting the volume, thinking it should merge into the unallocated space, that I have on my primary hard drive. But it did not. However, what happened was that this space of 1.37GB did start showing up on My Computer, once I formatted it using NTFS. I then checked its properties in My Computer and it had an option of readyboost. I selected the option which says use this disk for readyboost, and immediately in no time, the disk was full with on 68MB remaining as free space. It also has an icon of readyboost in the drive, when I double-click it. This is when I figured that this space could be on a separate physical disk. I did some research and found out that this drive or device or chip, is listed as Disk-1 in disk management and as IMD-0 under Disk Drives in Device Manager. I googled about it, and found that it was related to the turbo memory. Now, I believe that turbo memory would be a separate flash chip, which would be hardwired to function in a particular way (enabling boosting speeds), and that it would be non-accessible to users from within windows for formatting or doing anything else. Hence, I also believe that the space which I reclaimed, is existing on my primary 320GB hard drive and is used in addition to the turbo memory, as a cache, to boost speeds. However, since I do not understand the turbo memory concept very well, I would really appreciate if someone could explain how the turbo memory works, i.e. including IMD-0 and all that. And the main help I need is on how to hide the 1.37GB partition again, and put it in a format that it was earlier in, and usable for turbo memory. At present I do not know if it is being used by turbo memory or not, but below is the current status of the turbo memory:
1. In Device manager, under disk drives, IMD-0 shows up, and in properties it just says device type -- disk drive. Now I read somewhere that it should say NVCACHE, but it does not say that on my pc, under any tabs of the properties of IMD-0. Can someone help me putting it back there.
2. Under Disk Management, it says Local Disk H:, 1.37GB NTFS, Healthy (Active, Primary Partition). I don't exactly remember, but I guess prior to me formatting it, it said unallocated. Help needed here too.
3. In the Turbo memory controller, it says Windows readyboot enabled, Windows Readydrive enabled, 2GB
and below that I have checkboxes for enabling windows readyboost and readydrive checked.
So guys, can please anyone help me in re-hiding the 1.37GB partition and making it in the state it was before.
Thanks a lot for your help.

• In Contacts version 8, how can I print ALL information in each individual card? When I select the print command the only thing printed is the name and address. I need phone number(s) and all other information in the cards.

In Contacts version 8, how can I print ALL information in each individual card? When I select the print command the only thing printed is the name and address. I need phone number(s) and all other information in the cards. We enter various pieces of data, other than the standard name address & phone numbers and we print all information on each card so it fits in a 5x7 inch loose binder. We have used InTouch software for many years and it has served us extremely welll, however, the publisher (The Prairie Group) has not, and apparently has no plans to update their software to be compatible with any Mac OSX OS beyond 10.6. Any help will be appreciated!

You can select what you want included in a list format. In the Print command from Contacts, click the Show Details button. Then in the Style pulldown menu select "Lists" and there you'll be able to select what you want included. You can also select what you wish included if you select the Pocket Address Book style.
If neither of those options will work for you, then you will need to look to third-party software. Here's one possibility that seems to get good reviews:
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15485/labels-&-addresses
I haven't done more than try it to make sure that it works with OS X 10.9's Contacts, which it does, but you can download their demo and try it yourself.

• Adding a country to the Change Address Format menu

I have someone who I wish to write to in Turkmenistan, so I'm using Address Book to create a label for him. However, Turkmenistan (like many other countries) is not listed on the menu of countries you can change the Address Format to on the Edit/Change Address Format submenu, when you click on the address type (home, work, etc).
Is there a way to add countries, or perhaps to specify Other/Not Listed and just use a single blank field to type in the address? When I try and enter a Turkmenistan address according to the USA label format, it looks misaligned and has a gap between the second to last and last lines of the address.
I've searched the forums and all the documentation already, but I can find nothing on this. Please help if you can!

This is what I was doing initially, but for some strange reason, when I paste the Cyrillic in from another document (as I cannot type it myself), the second line of the address gets shifted all the way to the left, outside of the actual editing field. I can't edit it or make it align properly at all, and it looks that way even on the saved Card. I think on the label, it looks fine, but I can't delete the City, State fields, so there's a gap between the major bulk of the address and the country.
It would be nice if there were a way to say what fields you want on a card- for example, drag and drop Street, or Address Line 1, Address Line 2, and delete fields you don't want- like State/Province. (This would negate the need of needing to pick a country's particular format, because you could rearrange it as you pleased, or as was proper for wherever you were writing). I'm just wondering if there's some way to do something to help me-- maybe change something in one of the plist files, or AppleScript? (Though I'd rather an easier solution, if I can get it done, that would be great.)

• Mass-change address format in address book

Hi Guys,
I've recently changed from pc to mac (yay) and have imported all my contacts into address book.
I have several hundred contacts that have mailing address in the US, and several hundred that have mailing addresses in the Netherlands and some in other parts of the world.
I'd like to change the address formats to the appropriate ones, but so far have only been figure out how to do that one at a time, or all together.
I can use smart groups to group the addresses I want to change together, but after that I'm stuck.
Is there a way to change the address format from selected cards? or will I have to do this one at a time?
Thanks for your help.
mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)
mac mini Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Here is an Applescript you can run that will do what you want:
property CountryCode : {missing value:"us", USA:"us", Netherlands:"nl", UK:"uk"}
tell application "Address Book"
repeat with aPerson in people
set theAddresses to addresses of aPerson
if theAddresses is not {} then
repeat with anAddress in theAddresses
set theCountry to country of anAddress
set the country code of anAddress to my getCC(theCountry)
end repeat
end if
end repeat
end tell
on getCC(aCountry)
set s to "on run {CountryCode}" & return
set s to s & "get " & aCountry & " of CountryCode" & return
set s to s & "end"
try
run script s with parameters {CountryCode}
on error
return text returned of (display dialog aCountry & " not found. Enter a country code:" default answer "us" buttons {"Ok"})
end try
end getCC
In the property statement, change the "us" for missing value to your default country code. Add any other countries you have to the CountryCode list. The first part, before the colon, is the Name of the country as found in your address book. The second part is the ISO country code (two characters). I found a list of ISO country codes here. That list was upper case, but the address book uses lower. If you have variants of the same country name, you can just add them all to the list.
Note: the name of the country cannot be more than one word--I didn't want to work out another way of getting codes. However, if the script runs across a country name that is not in the list, it will ask you to enter the correct value. You can change the "us" in the getCC handler to the country code of multi-name countries in your address book to make it the default answer.
Need help with Applescript? Just copy the code into a new Script Editor document and hit the Run (green right arrow) button. It will open the Address Book and start looking through your contacts, finding ones with addresses, and setting the country code to what you say it should be in the property CountryCode list.
If it fails with any other errors, check the Event Log History window which may give you a clue as to what was wrong with the address it failed on. You may be able to fix the address so it continues. Otherwise, post back with the error and I may be able to figure it out.
