Address lookup (painfully) slow in Calendar (Mavericks)- can I disable it?
This new features seams really neat, but in reality it takes so long to find an address that I can barely type something into the event location field. As I start typing it starst hunting, and… I… have… to… wait… to… type… the… next… letter.
I don't really need this feature anyway since I use Mynd on the iPhone and that finds addresses just fine.
Short of speeding this up incredibly, is there a way to disable this?

MacBook Pro painfully slow, lagging after Mavericks install
I know I'm not the only one with this problem, but I'm not often able to follow the advice given to others -- it's too technical for me and uses abbreviations I'm not familiar with. I would so appreciate any suggestions anyone might have -- expressed so people with not much expertise can follow them. Here's the report on my machine. Thanks!!

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -
Slow address lookup when writing emails
When I begin a new email, and begin to type in the name or email address of the person I'm writing to, the lookup/auto-populate is painfully slow. Its so slow in fact, that I can usually type out the entire address before it returns the suggestion list.
I know it used to be faster, but I don't remember when it got this bad. I've looked all over the forums and Google, but can't seem to find anyone else that has this issue.
I have two email accounts on the iPhone- Exchange &MobileMess. I don't populate anything from iTunes.rlevs wrote:

Okay, but have you ever plugged the phone into iTunes and synced it ?
I ask as a common cause of problems is an overabundance of the memory type "Other" which occurs due to bad data etc building up over time. Normally I would say to plug it into iTunes and see how much the Device has in the Other category and seeing whether it needs a restart.
But if its never been synced before I would be wary of advising this. -
Editing pdf files in Preview painfully SLOW with mavericks! Why? How to fix?
Editing pdf files in Preview is painfully SLOW with Mavericks! With mountain lion everything was so smooth .... Why? How can I fix this?
I stopped using preview. Adobe Acrobat Pro is running fine ... this is not a solution to the problem though. The question remains open: why is preview not running as before?
Why did I upgrade?! -
After upgrading to Mavericks, from Mountai Lion, all applications are slowing down. iMovie particularly is painfully slow. When iM is running, any other application that is opened up also runs slow or does not respond altogether. It was fine before Mavericks, can somebody help, please.
Thank you. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Problem with replies in Maverick's mail. Originating emails send fine. When replying to an email (various addresses) the reply is hung up and can not be sent. Option becomes put in draft, delete, etc. Any suggestions would be helpful. Mid 2013 iMac.
I don't know how rare this is. I went a week or so without a problem, and now it's starting to recur. Also, in some instances, an email will look unsent (remain in the outbox on the Treo), but it has been sent, and recipients are replying while I'm trying to figure out what is going on. Further, it will send the same email over and over during this madness.
This is a show stopper. If there isn't a software fix soon, I may chuck this phone in the garbage.
Post relates to: Treo 800w (Sprint)
UPDATE: The problem comes and goes. The next day, no changes to the treo, everything workeds. Now i'm suspecting the sprint server, and how it/the phone responds from failing to send while roaming. I've since turned off roaming, and haven't had a problem for several days.

Upgraded from 10.6.8 to Mavericks last week on my MacBook Pro running the 2.4 GHz i5 and it's painfully slow on start-up- I mean, 5 minutes or more, to be fully functional... Is this normal?
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo). -
Painfully slow access to admin console (how can I fix it?)
Hi,
I'm using using Sun Java System Web Server Version 7.0U4 B12/02/2008 02:17 running on CentOS (Redhat EL) release 4.4.
The problem is that using the Admin Console (on port 8989) is painfully slow. It takes minutes for each page to load, but they do usually load.
Any ideas on how to fix that?
There are some other things going on that might be related and helpful to know:
I get certificate errors when I access the Admin Console (e..g, IE complains about a mismatched address). I've tried following the directions to install the certificate in IE7 and FF3, but neither has stopped bothering me about the certificate error.
I have the server behind a firewall which allows all outgoing traffic and select incoming ports to the server. The firewall also maps a public IP address to the server's local IP address (e..g, 10.10.10.8).
If I access the Admin Console locally via the LAN address (https://10.10.10.8:8989) it is no longer slow, but I get booted back to the login screen very frequently (e.g, every minute or two of casual browsing through the console), and I still get the certificate error
We haven't given the server a name, but access it by IP address, and the virtual server configuration in the Admin Console is name "localhost.localdomain"
Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! I've tried searching for solutions several times, but haven't succeeded.
Thanks,
TimThanks for the thoughts

sounds more like some network issues. are you running your browser on your centos 4.4 as well ? also, did you try to connect using your IP - some thing like https://<ip>:8989 ?
No, we're not running the browser on centos 4.4. We're runing browsers on laptops, connecting both offsite via public IP address and in the office via both the public IP address and the LAN ip address.
Yes, we're using the ip address as you demonstrated. This machine does not have a domain name attached, so we only connect via ip addresses (mapped public or LAN)

I've tried following the directions to install the certificate in IE7 and FF3, but neither has stopped bothering me about the certificate error.it is not a certificate error. web server 7 admin server uses a self signed certificate . this is necessary step. however, IE reports a warning when it sees a self signed certificate. it wants you to know that it does not understand who sent this certificate. you need to create an exception - saying that you know what you are doing then there won't be any certificate error ..Okay, I'll look for how to do that, but so far I've only found instructions for how to install the certificate in the browsers, and unfortunately, that hasn't made a difference.

sounds like some network misconfiguration - outside the scope of this forum.I cannot rule that out, but other servers/websites seem to work fine with this same setup. Although, only this server is using https

if you want to increase this time out, you could do so by manually editing <install-root>/lib/webapps/admingui/WEB-INF/web.xml and change the value for session-timeout to say 600 (for 10 minutes).. . pl . note that this is not a supported way and you could potentially leave others to use your session if you are careless. but, if you know what you are doing .Thanks I did that. It surprises me that the default timeout appears to be 1 minute. -
My 6 year old iMac is painfully slow after I installed Mavericks, despite upgrading to 4 GB of Ram. Everything stops and I see the spinning beachball way too frequently. Any suggestions or solutions?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Dear Adobe.
Yesterday I installed the latest version of Flash Player that auto appeared on my screen. Ever since I can not play video, and my system has become painfully slow. I have Mac OS Lion 10.7.5 and software is up to date. Before this everything was running beautifully. Can you please provide a link so I can uninstall the latest version only. Thank you. Stephen Kress. Melbourne. AustraliaWhen you run the uninstaller, it will uninstall all Flash Player versions.
If you want to revert to an older version after that, get it from http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html -
Mobileme calendar freezing and painfully slow
Both my ipad and iphone4 calendars are painfully slow and freeze up. Switching from month to month now takes about 10-15 seconds while it used to be instantaneous. Anyone know if there is a fix for this.
I have this problem too. My symptoms are that when I open the calendar, the calendar starts, but appears empty. The "network in use" spinning indicator next to the wifi on symbol in the screen header is on. It takes at least 20 seconds and as much as 45 seconds before any calendar entries are displayed. If you try to change the view (e.g., from day to week) or change the date(s) displayed, it also takes a long time to display.
If I had a slow internet connection, I guess I could understand, but I have a 15Mbps down, 5Mbps up FIOS connection which is really fast. I don't think the problem is related to wifi, but I couldn't say for sure.
I don't have this problem on my iPhone 4 (also iOS 4.2.1). It's a tad slower than it used to be, but at least it displays calendar entries within a couple seconds.
When I enter a new appointment, the same thing happens--after I hit done, the entry doesn't appear for many seconds after the appointment entry form has been closed. It's like it has to send it to MobileMe and then download it before it will display it.
On top of all that, the calendar app sometimes crashes, which it never did before.
If this keeps up, I'll have to move to Google calendar, as the very long delays makes the calendar unusable in practice. -

PAINFULLY slow- can take 4 min to infinity to change tabs!
I have a late 2008 MacBook Pro (original unibody MBP) that's running PAINFULLY slow! I used to be able to run 2 browsers with 15 tabs each, Photoshop, and word all at once. Over the last couple months, I can have as little as a browser with a few tabs and it grinds to a halt. I can simply click on a tab, or on a drop down menu, and I'll get the spinning beach ball for 4 or 5 minutes. Even cmd-opt-esc is unresponsive. Then, minutes later, it'll instantly execute anything I commanded over the last several minutes. Firefox seems to be the worst offender, but it can happen no matter what's running. It can happen immediately after rebooting, too (I used to only have to reboot every few weeks, now it's several times per day)
CPU load is 98% idle after it catches up, but once it catches up and the graph refreshes and I can see it was about 60% user load and 15% system while it was choking on the monumental task of opening the "File" drop-down menu
There are 482 threads and 129 processes.
This is the original unibody Mac with 2.4 ghz core 2 duo. It's been upgraded with 4GB of ram (2.7 used) and a 1TB hard drive. I did those upgrades 2 years ago and they've worked fine until recently. Clicking "get info" on the HD says 333 GB are free, but under "about this mac" it says 121 GB are free and 211 are used for "backup". I'm running OS-X 10.9.2 and it says there are no updates to install.
I've reset system manager
I've reset PRAM
I've fixed disk permissions.
No effect
I know I don't have the speediest machine, but even a mid-80's mac could smoothly handle a drop-down menu, and this is a recent problem. I'm at a loss here, guys. Any idea? My computer is quickly becoming unusable!Great- Thanks! Here's the info...

HELP! My Mac is now painfully slow. Downloading any internet site takes forever. Is it because of the McAfee program I have installed? If so, what can I do? It's driving me insane but I need to have security on my Mac.
Is it because of the McAfee program I have installed?
Very likely. You don't need it and I would delete it and instead use ClamXav.
There are many forms of ‘Malware’ that can affect a computer system, of which ‘a virus’ is but one type, ‘trojans’ another. Using the strict definition of a computer virus, no viruses that can attack OS X have so far been detected 'in the wild', i.e. in anything other than laboratory conditions. The same is not true of other forms of malware, such as Trojans. Whilst it is a fairly safe bet that your Mac has NOT been infected by a virus, it may have another security-related problem, but more likely a technical problem unrelated to any malware threat.
You may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435
The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.

one secure website loads painfully slow (7 minutes !). Only this site. How can I streamline firefox to load these pages faster? This started happening only after I switched from McAffee to Norton Security Suite. Other secure sites load just fine.
== URL of affected sites ==
http://www.chase.comIf you close Firefox, then start Firefox in Safe Mode, does the problem still occur? For instructions on starting in Safe Mode, see [[Safe Mode]].
