Addressbook smart group selection not correct

A simple matching condition for a smart: Card is not member of group xy doesn't work: Some members of the excluded group are still shown. I found this error in a posting as early as 2008 , but still no fix for it.
Are there any solutions or workarounds???

That condition does not work. When I try that, it just returns all address in the AB.  Funny that "is a member of" condition does work.
Perhaps no-one has reported this to Apple. Send feedback.

  • AB Smart Group "is not  member of" a group not working

After having some trouble with AB over time (group members disappearing after some time syncing via MobileMe), I went through the 1700 cards one by one and deleted all the groups, and old cards, now am down to 1500, with a main Group of about 900. So simple math would say that there are 600 "not a member of" the main Group, or, #1, am I missing something there?
I'd like to have my wife go through those that are not in the Group and delete those cards she doesn't need. So I tried a Smart Group with the one parameter that the Card is not a member of the Group. The result was 64 cards, not 600.
So question #2 is what's going wrong here, am I misunderstanding or is this a flaw somehow?
    Thanks!

As far as I know, Apple does not monitor these boards any more. Remind them here:

I just sent them a note, as I'm sure thousands others have since this seems to be a known issue, but considering they've let it slide for at least six months now, it can't hurt to have more people contact them. In the mean time, see these articles to use AppleScript to find items in/not in various groups:

    Hi Anja,
Please check the field number.  Check the CRMc_BLUEPRINT and make sure that you give the field number which is not in the actual list and also make sure that you check check box display in list of in details.

  • Group select not adding rating stars or keywords in Win 8.

    PC, Win 8, i-7.
When I select a group of images by click on 1st image, and the shift Click on last image (now all are selected)... then hit the 3 star to rate them... only the first image gets rated.   Same thing for key wording.   It only happens on my new "power horse" win 8 computer I bought just for heavy duty photography work.  Works fine on old backup computer (win 7) & the one before that (win xp).
Is this a Lightroom setting, or a Windows 8 setting?
    Thanks Marv.

You either need to be in Grid view when you multi-select and try to apply ratings and keywords to all selected, or if you just want to stay in Loupe mode and multi-select using the Filmstrip then you need to have Auto-Sync enabled.

  • Syncing iPhone with selected groups: selection not possible

I'm trying to sync only a part of my address book to my iPhone 4, but iTunes did not sync the group named iPhone (the group was created in the iPhone, but was empty). Then I've created a new group called "Mobil" in the address book with 300 or so contacts. But now iTunes is not able to see this group (as shown in the screen shot below).
Any hints from an experienced sync expert? Should I look for some third party apps to sync properly?

    Mac OS X 10.6.7
Contact application is Apples Address Book 5.0.3
Here's the screenshot (didn't upload the first time)

  • Smart Group not working Correctly

I use Plaxo to sync my Outlook (exchange) to my Address Book. My Outlook hits my blackberry, so I am going to Omit members of the group "Old".
I can add members to the group Old with no problem. It currently has 99 of my 800 contacts. I created a Smart Group that says to Not include cards that belong to Old. When I click on this list, it shows only 95 contacts, which should be much more. I deleted the addressbook-v22.abcddb file and restarted Address Book and it showed several more groups.
My Non Old Smart group is not very smart today.

C, sorry…I read your posts out of order. I see that you have links to your smart groups after all. My apologies.
It's as you say, the course pages load up, but I don't see anything in the smart groups. Just thinking out loud here…maybe the search criteria don't genuinely match anything on your site? Perhaps there are actual matches, but you've hidden content with a new credential?…I accessed both pages using the "Unauthenticated" and "All" credentials. My last/craziest guess is that it has something to do with localization…français versus anglais?

  • Smart Groups not so "smart".

I have noticed that within Smart Groups I can not Edit Distribution List email addresses. After I change, they do not stick. Editing Distribution List works on regular Groups no problem.
Anyone have this issue or answer?
Also isn't it funny the Smart Groups do not sync to MobileMe or iPhone, once again not so "smart".
    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean about editing distribution list addresses, but what you need to understand is that Smart Mailboxes are not actually mailboxes. Think of them more like saved searches - they remember what you're searching for and do a new search for those items when you view them. This is why they don't behave like regular mailboxes in many ways.

  • Smart Groups in Address Book not syncing to Contacts

I have a couple of Smart Groups in Address Book on my primary Mac, and I sync Address Book with Contacts on my iPhone 4 through MobileMe.
Today, I noticed that, under Groups in Contacts on the iPhone 4, these Smart Groups do NOT show up. How can I make these Smart Groups on the Mac to sync and show up in Contacts on the iPhone 4?

I just found an answer myself: https://discussions.apple.com/message/4902780#4902780

  • "Smart Groups" in Address Book not syncing to the iPhone

"Smart Groups" in Address Book not syncing to the iPhone
Normal Groups sync but smart groups do not.
Anyone else have this issue or know of a fix?
    Thanks.

This same concept applies to syncing two macs via .Mac
The method I use for iPhone is this.
Define your smart group as needed.
Define a read group with a similar or convenient name.
From time to time drag your whole smart group to the real group.
The real group is the one that then syncs to your iPhone.
As a safety factor, I usually clear all entries from my real group before I drag over the updated smart group.
Anyway, this is simple and works well.
    Hope that helps.

  • Smart Group has no Country choice

AddressBook Smart Groups let you select people by Address, State, City, etc., but not by Country (at least my AB 4.0.3 version). Is there a way to add this to the choices?
I can get most of what I want by selecting Address, but sometimes a country name appears in an unintended part of the address (e.g., selecting Israel yields people whose work address is Beth Israel Hospital).
    Thanks!

    Hi!
I think that I did what you meant with "enabling", i.e. I opened the AppleScript Utility, which now states:
    +Default Script Editor = "Script Editor (2.2.1)+
+GUI Scripting = "Enable GUI Scripting" is UNCHECKED+
+"Show Script menu in menu bar" is CHECKED+
    +"Show Computer scripts" is CHECKED+
    +Show application scripts at = bottom+
Moreover, I saved your script as *Contacts with No Pictures.scpt*
    under */Library/Scripts/Address Book Scripts*
Now, I see the scripts Icon on the +right part+ of the Finder Menu, so that all the Scripts are available whatever Application I am just in.
I have had many Itunes Scripts in the past, and they all appeared under a special Menu Item of Itunes Menu (i.e. on the left part) with the specific Script Icon.
Can I get something similar now, that is hence only available from within Address Book?
    Thank you for your patience!

  • Syncing Smart Groups from Address Book

Spent a lot of time creating a smart group in address book, only to find that iphone sync doesn't recognize "Smart Groups", only regular groups. Maybe the engineers can write some script to fix this little bugaboo to have the sync software recognize smart groups from Address Book and place them in the box so that the user can select the smart group and not have to sync the whole address book. Thanks.
    tjrmac

Yes. Please. It would be great if the syncing of smart groups were to be added. Right now with the large amount of address' I manage for business, it's important that I see the same groups on my iPhone.
    Please add.

  • Automating e-mailing to multiple Smart Groups

Limitations imposed by my ISP require breaking what used to be a single weekly e-letter to about 400 people into 23 separate messages to subsets of the by domain, achieved through SmartGroups. At present am having to compose and format the lengthy message, then open a new message window, change the "from" choice (so it shows for my arts council e-mail address rather than my default e-mail), paste the formatted text into the window, re-enter the subject, and select the SmartGroup and send, then have to repeat this 22 more times. I think there's probably a way to automate this, but don't see how--can it be done with Automator? If so, how? Or AppleScript? If that, how?

Well, you will get an immediate reduction in workload by using "Send Again". After sending to your first smart group, select the message in the Sent box and use Send Again. The message will open, allowing you to remove the first group from the To field and substitute the next.
As for proper automation, what are you using to compose the newsletter? Building the script in there might help. Applescript can certainly help with the distribution task, but it has no way of knowing a smart group from an ordinary group. I would be inclined to keep a master group, and have applescript iterate through the contacts in it, adding 20 (or whatever is left) to the To field and sending off the mail.
Another possibility is to talk to your ISP, and see is the limit absolute, or if it can be lifted in clearly-defined non-spam cases. Or find a more co-operative ISP ...

  • Smart Groups possible in Address Book for PANTHER?

Can you tell me if "SMART GROUPS" is just something in TIGER's version of ADDRESS BOOK or do these exist in PANTHER as well? Actually, I'm not sure what they are, but someone mentioned that I should use them...
    Thanks very much!
    Regards,
    Steve

    Steve,
"Smart Groups" are not available in Panther. This is the Tiger definition of Address Book Smart Groups: Smart Groups are group addresses that Address Book automatically updates with new contacts when they fit the criteria you've specified for that group. For example, if you create a Smart Group for all the members of your swim club by searching for "swim" in the Note field, then every time you add or change a contact and put "swim" in the Note field, that contact is automatically added to your swim club Smart Group.
You can also create a Smart Group by entering a word or phrase in the search field in the upper-right corner of the Address Book window, then choosing "Save Search" from the Action pop-up menu near the upper-left corner of the Address Book window.;~)

  • How to access Address Books "Smart Groups" on iPhone ?

Address Book on the Mac allows for the creation of both Groups and Smart Groups.
Although my Groups show up fine on the iPhone, the Smart Groups do not.
How can I access my Smart Groups on the iPhone?
    Thank you.

Unfortunately, the iPhone does not sync SmartGroups from the MacOS X Address Book, at this time. Only regular groups.

  • In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email addresses I want to use?

In a Smart Group in AddressBook 6.1, how do I designate which email address I want to use for contacts who have more than one address when I'm mailing to the whole group? The "Edit Distribution List" is grayed out.

Thanks, Barney, but that's not really my question. The "Edit Distribution List" is in the Edit menu on my version, too, but I can't use it to edit the email addresses of contacts who are in Smart Groups. In the version of AddressBook I was using before I bought a new MacBook Pro and upgraded to Mac OSX Lion, I could use the "Edit Distribution List" to pick which email address I wanted to use for contacts in Smart Groups with more than one address. Apparently that isn't an option in Lion. The Help menus for AddressBook 6.1 even say that "Edit Distribution Lists" doesn't work for Smart Groups.
Okay. I get that. But some of my contacts have more than one email address, so how do I choose which email address I want Mail to use for these contacts when I send an email to a Smart Group they're in?
