AddressBook Suddenly has over 115,000 entries!

Since I began syncing my Treo 650 with iSync (for iCal and Address) and Hotsync for Memos, etc., AddressBook has acquired over 115,000 blank entries that appear as "no name" in AddressBook and "unnamed" on the Treo. AddressBook is totally bogged down and iSync cannot complete syncing now. I was also syncing a sony ericcson 520a phone and an ipod with iSync. I deleted the "no names" from AddressBook a couple of times, but now the program will hardly open, much less allow me to choose delete from the edit menu. I use the 160g hard drive as my startup drive but the original 30g is also bootable, though it has recently become (inexplicably) full. I repaired permissions on both discs a few days ago, and ran all of the Cocktail routines. Any ideas how I can get out of this mess, and If I do, what is the best way to synchronize these devices? I will probably be buying a new iMac soon. Do Tiger and Sync 2 work better? Should I be using "the missing sync" or some other program? Thanks for any help!

Lucas,
syncing is always tricky, especially with non-Apple hardware.
Did you use backup from inside the AB application?
Tiger may solve some of your issues, but you will get better help when you post these questions on the Panther forum

Looking at your problem, I suggest you could need some serious repair software like DiskWarrior.
Start making backups of all your essential data before this gets worse.

  • I suddenly have over 5,000 emails in my IN box as a result of forwarding transferring emails from another site

Is there a way I can quickly delete all those emails? The emails that have suddenly been dumped in my Gmail account are from [email protected] This happened after I asked that emails continue to be forwarded to my Gmail account as they were until about 10 days ago. I just want current emails forwarded.

I still don't understand what to do. I want emails addressed to me at [email protected] to still come to me and be forwarded to my gmail account. But, I want to get rid of the 5,000 or so ones that are now in my IN box. Is there a fast way to delete a bunch of items?

  • An older style Ipod has over 10,000 songs on it.  The original computer that contained these songs on itunes has since been replaced.  Can itunes/match get the songs from this ipod to store in match and then put on new computer/itunes?

Can this new service of itunes/match allow you to retrieve songs from an older style ipod, store them in match, and then download them onto a new computer/itunes?  The original computer that contained these songs has since been replaced b/c it broke down.  There were alot of songs on there and now I can't get the songs onto my new computer.  Can match work from ipod > match > computer?

Only if it is an iPod touch that you can turn on iTunes Match.
The original computer that contained these songs has since been replaced b/c it broke down.
Did you make a backup of all the  important files on this computer before it broke down?
    Try this -> http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
Then backup your computer after you recover the items.

  • I just turned on Match for the first time. One of my playlists now has over 1,000 duplicate songs?

Everything seemed fine. Now when I click the "Songs" tab it shows about 2,200 songs and when I click the "playlist" tab and look my main playlist (I only have one right now) its showing over 3,700 songs so there's about 1,400 duplicates. What's going on?

  • I recently purchased a new computer and just downloaded itunes. I have an old iphone that has over 1,000 songs that I want to put on itunes. How do I get the songs on my iphone onto itunes?

Help! I just bought a new computer and am trying to get the songs from my iphone to itunes on the computer. My old computer that had all of origional songs on itunes crashed so all I have is my old iphone. How do I get the songs to go into my itunes library. I would like to purchase a new iphone and plan to load the songs on it after I can figure this out? Please Help?

Restore them to the new computer using the bakcup of the old one. If you don't have a backup of the old computer, you can re-download music purchased from the iTunes store. If they were imported from CD's, etc. You will either have to re-rip them or purchase third party software to extract them from the phone. The iPhone is not a backup or data transfer device.

  • 115,000 Addressbook contacts.  How do I delete Addressbook data file?

Because of (I think) a synchronization problem, I now have over 115,000 contacts in addressbook. the unwanted entries are blank, and appear as 'no name.' Because the file is so cumbersome now, I haven't been able to delete the 'no names.' I recently exported a copy of all my addressbook contacts, so I am thinking the best thing might be to trash the problem data file, and then import the backup. Where is the addressbook data file kept, and how do I delete it?
    Thanks!

You will find it in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/AddressBook/ folder.

  • Problems with outlook and address book contacts: my outlook contacts had around 3,000 entries. Outlook duplicated by itself and now outlook and address book have each over 340,000. What should I do?

Problems with outlook and address book contacts: my outlook contacts had around 3,000 entries. Outlook duplicated entries and have now 340,000. I reinstalled microsoft office and, thus, outlook, and reinstalled mac OS X system and applications. While I managed to delete outlook contacts so that I can re-sync with my blackberry, the contacts at Mac Address Book were not deleted and still have over 340,000 entries. I do not mind deleting all contacts since I have back up, but I have not been able to delete them. Also, when I go at Address Book and try to delete or merge duplicated entries, the system takes forever and never ends because of such large amount of entries. Worse, when I do so I run out of RAM memory.
My Macbook pro is just 2 months old.
What should I do? Is there a way to delete my Mac Address Book without having the problem above?
    Many thanks

  • My ipod touch displays a loading symbol and then goes to the apple logo and then repeats the process. I cant turn it on or off and has been this way for the past 24 hours. I have an 8GB 4th Gen and have over 7,000 pictures, but cant delete. help

My ipod has over 7,000 pictures and there are 5,00 i could easily delete but it wont let me do anything! it just has a loading symbol that converts into an apple logo and then back again. Ive tried pressing down the home and sleep/wake button down at the same time for 10 seconds. The apple logo does appear, but it goes back to the loading symbol or a white screen. Its been like this for 24 hours and is unresponsive. Please help.

    - Connect the iPod to the computer and see if iTunes sees it. If it sees it try to get the photos off the iPod.
    - Next let the battery fully drain. It will likely take days. After charging for at least an hour try again
    - Last, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    Hello there, RJ Quick.
I've located the following Knowledge Base article that might be the information you're looking for:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12165
The following section may be of help:
Change where imported files are stored
Choose iTunes > Preferences and click Advanced.
Click Change and select a new location for your files. From now on, new songs and other items you import will be stored in the new location. Songs you’ve already imported stay in their current location. To go back to storing imported files in the iTunes folder, choose iTunes > Preferences, click Advanced, and click Reset.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

You should have copied everything from the old computer to the new one.
Type "move itunes library" into the google search bar

  • Lion Address Book problem - all of over 2,000 contacts disappeared - one mysteriously reappeared - then they all reappeared during resync with Gmail!

The subject iine pretty much describes what happened.
I am wondering if it is anything to do with what looks like an odd file in the directory ~ Library -> Application Support -> Address Book
As well as the "real" database file there is this zero bytes one:
    AddressBook-v22.abcddb.0F392545-78F2-4AE6-8D30-457C138332B2.unknown
From the date, it might be something to do with installing and linking Cobook to Address Book maybe?
These are the files and folders in that directory (sub-directory files not shown):
I have enabled the debug menu in Address Book but have not been able to find any info about how to use it.  I lie!  I did read that I might possibly have been able to "retrieve" the contacts using the debug menu "Force Refresh" - however that was after I had started to resync with Gmail contacts.
I realised that something odd was going on during resync when I saw that there were over 4,000 contacts being processed rather than the 2,000 or so that I was expecting.  Initially, none of the contacts groups from Gmail were showing in Address Book after this partial sync (I stopped it when I saw what was happening).  However, after quitting and restarting Address Book, the groups appeared again.
I have not lost my contact data - as well as Gmail contacts I also have an Address Book backup from about two weeks ago and also the backup created by Cobook about two weeks ago.  (Installed Cobook as it looked like a very efficient way of getting to view individual contacts quickly - Quicksilver just isn't finding them at all).  I used third party app "Contacts Sync for Google Gmail" to link Address Book with Gmail as it gives you options about what to do for each duplicate card that it identifies.
I then spent a lot of time sorting through the contacts on Address Book, finding duplicates, updating data, etc. with the intention of managing contacts in Address Book from then on, rather than in Gmail. Not all of these changes are reflected in the Cobook backup or Gmail.
My worry is, with Lion being such a god-awful Pig's Ear in so many more ways than this, that this Address Book mess might happen again.
I seem to have spent most of my time over the last month wrestling with the numerous problems that keep cropping up with Lion and getting little to show for it.
WARNING! FOOT-STAMPING WHINGE ABOUT LION - LOOK AWAY AND DOWN TO THE HOWLING FACES - IT WON'T BE ANYTHING THAT YOU HAVEN'T HEARD BEFORE:
I gave up on OSX when I tried Panther - that was dreadful - but was lured back by Tiger, have used Leopard very comfortably for about 5 years, had a very happy couple of months with Snow Leopard and now - this mess that is Lion!  I have repaired OSX install permissions and "home user" permissions time and again, TinkerTooled it until I am blue in the face and it seems that every few days I manage to fix something and then almost immediately something else screws up. I can't upgrade to Mountain Lion on this machine and am seriously considering installing or running Linux as these problems with Lion are just never-ending - and then there are all the other stupid changes that have subsequently been sensibly reverted, mitigated or worked around in ML).
I have never bothered much with Address Book or Mail in the past as I have found them too limited.   I have used either the Gmail web interface or Thunderbird.  However, Gmail has started crashing my favourite browsers (Seamonkey and Firefox), Thunderbird has got just a bit too complicated and I cannot get Quicksilver to play ball with Gmail.  The Lion version of Address Book is better than Gmail Contacts and Mail Smart Folders can emulate Gmail filters and labels - a huge improvement.  So, just when these apps look good enough to be worth bothering with, they come part and parcel with what I have seen mocked, and rightly, as "Apple Vista"!
Sorry for that  but I am about at the end of my tether with it all ;-/
I would be very grateful if anyone can offer any advice about:
    1) That strange looking zero bytes file in the Address Book folder.
    2) Whether the Address Book debug menu options might be of any help in this situation?
There seem to be lots of people having problems with Address Book in both Lion and Mountain Lion, if not exactly this issue, so maybe the answers will help others too.
    Fingers crossed!
    Ms Mousette
ps. In the product list to tick for this question they are grouped so I cannot specify that this is actually nothing to do with the iPhone.  I have got a load of contacts on my iPhone too but I am not going to sync them until I have got this issue sorted out.

Could this font be the cause of the problem?
Possibly, since that font is not the one that Address Book uses and there is no method to specify or change the font used by Address Book. You could have recovered your Address Book contacts without syncing, so that could also be part of the problem. You should always make a keep a backup of your Address Book on your computer and in another safe location whenever you make any change to it.
May I ask why you haven't updated to 10.4.11 yet, as it provides various bug fixes and security enhancements?

  • Why does mail app show over 2,000 messages (not new) but only 10-12 in my inbox?

So I recenly got a new rMBP and have begun using the Mail app. I've had a bunch of problems with Gmail and the app but my my biggest gripe is that it seems to have downloaded over 2,000 messages from the server (of which I have no idea where its getting them because I've deleted pretty much everything in trying to solve this to the extent of completely wiping out my email folders). I wouldn't have such a problem with it except that it seems like its actually downloaded the 2,000+ messages onto my computer, no dobt taking up space (and its mildly annoying to me to always see 2,514 to the right of the "Gmail" folder in the left window)
I have tried emptying my mail completely including emptying the trash+deleting mail account from all apple devices and then restarting them before adding the mail account back.
Looking in random folders to make sure I haven't lost my marbles and theres a stash of emails lurking somewhere...
Again, deleting the accounts, powercycling the apple devices and then setting up mail again (just incase the first three times didn't work) and I'll mention that EVERY time I set up the account it imediately starts downloading the 2,000+ emails all over again (little windw shows up in bottom left counting down how many it has and how many there are left to go).
Any advise would be appreciated- I know its not huge but its driving me crazy!!
Just FYI I'm using the mail app simultaneously on a rMBP, iPad 4, and iPhone 5...

Go to Gmail (on the web) look in the folder named All Mail, they will be there, delete what you want.
