ADF & JSF: implementing PagePhaseListener

Question

Hi all,
I implemented PagePhaseListener on my bean, and made the afterPhase() call a method to do some item rendering, but some issues arose at runtime that are vague to me.
First: beforePhase() and afterPhase() are called more than once every time I run the page or refresh it, I thought it was from my bean, so I created another class called ControllerClass1 which implements PagePhaseListener and changed the Controller Class of the page definition to ControllerClass1, but the same results, they are called more than once.
Second: whether I call my method in afterPhase() or beforePhase(), the item rendering wont happen.
Can anyone help me please, how can I solve those issues and is there another way to call a method when the page starts.

I am imitating a calendar, I have dates stored in the Database, each date has a flag denoting if that date is a holiday or not, holiday type and desc.
Based on the dates, I have to render selectBooleanCheckboxes and outputtexts to true/false, also I set the values of those selectBooleanCheckboxes to checked/unchecked based on the holiday flag,and outputtexts based on the desc.
All this is done in a method on the bean( setLayout() ), and I want to call this method when the page starts to populate the page from todays month, and when I try to call the method from either beforePhase() or afterPhase(), my method wont work, my code is as follows:
