ADFS 3.0 Issue - Caching Bad Passwords

We have come across a slightly odd problem with ADFS.
For over a year now we have been running ADFS 2.0 for our Office 365 Enterprise Mail, the solution was set up as default ( with the obvious exception of Certs and passwords it was plain next, next next and take all the defaults ) and this has been perfect
all this time.
We just used the same method for a nice default install of ADFS 3.0 and we have switched one of our smaller domains to use it as a test, however we have come across a very annoying issue.
If a user opens Outlook, they get a password prompt as usual, if they put in the password all is perfectly fine, if however they accidentally typo and put in the wrong password, when the password prompt finally comes up a second time, it dosent seem to care
if they put the right one in, it sends the first password again, and keeps going no matter what you do until the account is locked out, the only way to fix it is to close and reopen outlook.
I'm sure many people will not read or understand this correctly and just say it's a setting or some other issue with Outlook etc. but bear in mind I can even switch this domain back to our ADFS 2.0 setup and do the same test with the same user and the same
machine, and everything works as you'd expect, and typing the correct password the second time leads to authentication. This must therefore be an issue or difference between ADFS 2.0 and 3.0, or perhaps its just a plain old bug, who knows, all I do know is
that it's an issue that causes some very annoyed users, and we cant complete our update to ADFS 3.0 until this is fixed.
I have read a few ADFS 3.0 articles that suggest that using a GMSA account ( the default ) may be to blame so I am investigating using a normal account as the service account, but that does unfortunately seems to entail a reinstall of ADFS to accomplish
so will take a little time to switch.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Hi David,
I just tested this on Outlook 2013, after input a wrong password, the password prompt popped out without any error message, and the wrong password was cached (displayed as ********), if I click on OK, the password prompt will popped
back with wrong password again.
Is this the issue which you were referring to?
If that’s the case, then it is a normal behavior, by design at least. To avoid account lockout, every time the password prompt pops out after a failed logon attempt, we need to clear the password, then input a correct one manually.
Best Regards,
Amy

  • Detect Source of Bad Password from ADFS Server 2.0

    Hi Folks,
I'm dealing with user who report AD account locked every 2-3 hour due to 5 times bad password. The security event log  show that source of bad password is ADFS Server (W2K8R2). We advise her to update password  in all active sync device and PC yet
the account still locked. how can i identify source of bad password for every device authenticate to ADFS? i have been working with this issue for 4 month and still have't find way to identify the source of bad password. Thanks and appreciate your help and
    time.

    Hiya,
You might be able to get a time indication in the ADFS logs first about a failed attempt due to wrong username or password. From that time indication, it would be easier to search firewall logs for additional details.

  • Unknown user name or bad password issue while creating AD accounts

    Hi All,
While creating accounts on AD through IdM, I am getting below error. Sometimes I don't see this error while sometimes I do. What could be the actual reason ?
com.waveset.util.WavesetException: Error opening object 'LDAP://cn=ut9778ug,ou=Employee USA,ou=Users,ou=CorpHQ,dc=corpz,dc=utcz,dc=com': ADsOpenObject(): 0X8007052E: , , Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
I just faced the same problem while provisionning account on AD through Sun Identity Manager Gateway. (I'm in Oracle Waveset 8 patch 6)
When I test configuration on the configuration page of my AD resource, everything was ok, but when i tried to create / update account on AD, i had the same error. (when i forced a bad password for example, the test configuration was in error, so i know that was ok)
I resolved the problem using IP address in "LDAP Server Name" instead of url or host name. I don't understand because 'ping' on url and test configuration on resource were ok.
I hope it will be usefull for you

  • "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password" even with correct Credentials

I have networked PCs before many times successfully, so this is not my first time trying to network PCs in a home environment. Though I’m wondering if Windows 8.1 is part of the problem.
I would have thought that for sure, until one of the new laptops running W8.1 would not connect to any of the other three PCs/Laptops running W8.1. Yet these other three W8.1 PCs/Laptops CAN connect to this laptop. Then it gets a little more interesting:
this same laptop that couldn’t connect to those three W8.1 PCs/Laptops, CAN connect to a Windows 7 desktop, and a XP Laptop, and those two can also connect back to it without issue. It’s almost like my network is divided in half, and only half can talk to
each other. But then when I thought it couldn’t get any more interesting, I realized the first three W8.1 PCs/Laptops can talk to the others, it’s just that the others (W8.1 Laptop, W7 Desktop, XP Laptop) can’t talk back to them without getting the error,
"Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password” even though the username and password are 100% correct.
I don’t fully understand this error, because on the surface, it’s just WRONG!
My username and password are correct, but it appears something somewhere is interfering or hijacking the authentication process. Three of the computers (laptops) are brand new, just purchased last week and setup this week. The HostPC is also fairly new,
    just purchased last month.
I am not using a HomeGroup, and have removed all computers that were part of a HomeGroup. I have enabled file sharing and network discovery and enabled “Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers” on all PCs.
I have DSL and am using the wireless modem provided by my ISP which has router functionality built into it. It is a Sagemcom Model: F@ST 1704N.
All computers are connected wirelessly. Time is correct on all PCs. I cannot use Group Policy, since they're all Standard or Home edition. DHCP is enabled and all computers are on the same subnet, using the 192.168.254.x range of ip addresses.
The six computers are as follows: (I figured this may make is easier to visualize the layout)
    HostPC: HP Desktop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend
U/N: DrsBlend  p/w: 123456 (not showing my real password)
    PC1: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-1
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC2: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-2
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC3: HP Laptop W8.1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-3
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC4: HP Desktop W7 SP1
    PC Name: DrsBlend-4
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
    PC5: Dell Laptop XP SP3
    PC Name: DrsBlend-5
    U/N: DrsBlend    P/W: 123456
Every PC stated above has the same user name and password and is logged-in with the username, DrsBlend and the password 123456. The "Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password” happens when trying to access HostPC, PC1, or PC2 from PC3, PC4, or
    PC5.
The HostPC can see and connect to all the PCs, but only PC1 and PC2 can talk back or access the HostPC.
It’s like the HostPC and PC1, and PC2 are in their own little clique, and can talk back and forth to each other. Those three PCs can also talk to PC3, PC4, and PC5 as well, but PC3, PC4, and PC5 cannot talk back to them (HostPC, PC1, PC2).
Profile corruption? I would have entertained that thought, but the fact the first three PCs can access and talk to one another kind of defeats that idea, and the fact the PCs were just recently setup.
Firewall? Disabled, and disabled TrendMicro with no change. With them on/off, the first three PCs can still talk to each other and the rest of the PCs.
    Anyone have any additional suggestions?

    Hi,
How did you connect to other PCs? Do you use RDP to connect to other PCs? If so, check the version of the RDP, as I know, some low version RDP can't connect to higher Windows like 8.1.
And could you please tell us the detailed information about how the six PCs connect to the home network?
    Can PC1, PC2, PC3 ping back to host PC, PC1 and PC2?
You can also run command " rundll32.exe keymgr.dll, KRShowKeyMgr " view the credentials stored in your PC,check whether this issue is related with some old credentials stored in your system.

hi, I encountered the same error with you,
i resolved the issue with following steps:
    1. add you Office Web Apps server to domain;
    2. login  Office
    Web Apps server as domain user;
    3. run power shell as administrator;
    4. run shell command;

    cd E:\HSBC\HSBC_IN\

    Hi,
May be my suggestion is a stupid one but still you can just look into it if nothing works out.
See the non-SAP server you are mentioning here, should also be same type I mean if  you are moving file from SAP-DEV then the non-SAP server also should be of type DEV, SAP-Quality to Non-SAP Quality etc
    Check this.

  • How do I resolve this problem: This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required

This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.
Additionally, a 401 Authorization Required error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

You may have saved a bad password so Firefox is entering that rather than giving you the option to try again. Go to Tools > Options > Security > Saved Passwords and delete the saved passwords for that site and then try logging in again.

  • Why do I get "Unknown user name or bad password" on Windows 7 when trying to connect to an SMB share on my Mac?

Before installing the update to 10.7.3 I could connect to an SMB share on my Mac from Windows 7 but I can't any longer. When I try I get the error "Unknown user name or bad password" on the Windows 7 system.
When I try to connect using the "net use..." command I get the error: "System error 86 has occurred".
Does anyone know how to resolve this? What really confuses me is that it was working fine until I installed the update to 10.7.3.

Check the Wins Tab in the Advanced section of Network in system preferences.
If you don't have the same workgroup name and the correct NetBIOS name showing up in the WINS tab you will get the Bad username or password.
I know I deal with this everyday.
There is something wrong with Lion and it does not automatically fill in those entries in the WINS tab.
What I have to do on every reboot/startup is open System preferences go to Sharing and uncheck File Sharing then recheck it. That will fill in the WINS tab entries.

    1. Make sure that you've got all of the required Kerberos delegation

I am not sure about the severity of the error. I can observe the error message almost every minute in the Log file and I have the impression that this message occours more often before the portal has more "problems" in general and is for a short time not accecible (it freezes and sometimes a java server restarts itself). I am asking myself if this error message could give a hint for the system crash we have had today. (a restart of the host was needed.)
However I would like to know what causes the error message?
It is a critical error message? It means can it cause a system crash? Or is it not important?
What can I do to solve the problem?
    I appreciate your helful answers.
    Thanks in advance.

  • JDev 9.0.3 appears to cache CVS password

I am attempting to define a new CVS connection to a CVS server which is on a brand new box. Previously, I had been using a CVS server on a different box, but with the same username to log into CVS.
Now, whenever I try to set up this new connection, JDeveloper is not asking me for my password, and I'm getting permission denied errors from CVS. My hunch is that JDeveloper is somehow "caching" the password for this username, independently of the CVS server which I'm trying to log into. Using WinCVS I'm able to log in with the same CVS server details, username etc without any problems.
So, my question is, where would JDev cache this information if this is indeed what is happening? Conversely, is there any simple way for me to clear this cache?

    Hi,
When you log in to a CVS server, JDeveloper stores the password in a location suitable for the external CVS client to find. In most cases this is the '.cvspass' file in the user's home directory. If the client is CVSNT, the password is stored in the Windows registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\cvsnt\cvspass. To ensure that there is no cached password information, remove the password file or delete this registry key.
If the problem persists could you tell us the error message you're seeing, and the CVS client version being used by JDeveloper?

  • Windows Security Error! Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

We RANDOMLY can't access one of the computers in our company's network. It is now saying - Windows Security - Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. It doesn't matter what I put in for a user name and pw it still doesn't work.
    Any help is much appreciated!

To be added, if it is part of domain, is this computer had local account? If so, try to logon local account for test, If sucessfully, follow Cyber's suggestion remove PC from domain and rejoin it for test.
If not, you can try to boot system into recovery mode and choose recovery computer for test.
Press F8 at startup, then choose Recovery system.

  • EffectiveUserName Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

    Hi
I am trying to connect Sharepoint 2013 services (performancepoint , excel services) to SSAS 2012 using the EffectiveUserName.
I was getting a error message regarding conencting the datasource and when checking profiler it was saying Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
On the SSAS server i tried using EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters and it failed for the above reason. I also tried my username as well as the sharepoint service account
the sharepoint service account and my username are both server admins.
When I try using the EffectiveUserName in the additional Connection Parameters on another server I can connect with no problems.
What seems to be the different with server where I am getting the error message?
    Regards

    Hi aivoryuk,
According to your description, you get the "unknown user name or bad password" error when using EffectiveUserName in Connection parameter to connect Analysis Services. Right?
In this scenario, if you use a connection string to create the data connection, and the connection string contains an effective user field, the EffectiveUserName feature will override the user-supplied effective user value with the system-supplied value.
On this server, you may use a domain user to run the SSAS. So it will show the "unknown user name or bad password." However, on the other server, it may use system build-in account to run SSAS. Please refer to link below to check the steps for using
Analysis Services EffectiveUserName in SharePoint Server 2013:

Hi thanks for the link but it just shows how to set effective user name in sharepoint which I know how to do.
In SSMS and when I connect to the SSAS server and I select options and then I go to the addional connection parameters tab i set Effectivename ="domain\username" on once server I get the error mesage but on the other I don't.
I'm not clear from you explanation as to why this is?

  • Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password... ?Authenticator class?

I'm connecting to a MS Exchange server (internally) but I'm getting the following error:
    ........Non SSL........
    POP3: connecting to host "xxxx.xxx.com", port 110
    S: +OK Microsoft Exchange POP3 server version 5.5.2658.25 ready
    C: USER [email protected]

    C: QUIT
S: +OK Microsoft Exchange POP3 server version 5.5.2658.25 signing off
test2 :: javax.mail.AuthenticationFailedException: Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password.
I can get my email using Outlook because I don't have to provide a password to connect. So I left it blank in my program but I still can't
login. Does this mean that I need to use the authenticator class?
