Adjust stroke weight when scaling problem

Hello,
I am having trouble with the stroke on an object changing when I scale that object.  I have already read to uncheck "Adjust Stroke Weight when Scaling" but my problem is that option is grayed out in my "Transform" panel.  When I go into edit>menus, there is an "eye" graphic next to it so it should be showing.  I am trying to figure out how to make that show up so that I can then uncheck it, resize a photo and keep the same stroke weight at all times.
Thanks
Pat

Peter,
Thank you for your response, that was what I needed to fix the problem!

  • Why are my stroke weights not scaling?

I'm new to InDesign. Just installed it and playing for the first time.
I'm having issues with scaling the stroke weight of vector objects. I create an object or path, but when I go to scale it, the weight doesn't scale too. I've made sure that the 'adjust stroke weight when scaling' is ticked.
    What am I doing wrong?
Really appreciate any help I can get on this.
    Thanks

There have been several discussions reporting the same problem.
Re: Photos with iOS8.1 Event and Face out of sequence
There is no known fix. Send feedback to Apple to request a better photo sync, that will respect the sorting of faces albums.

  • Exporting to PNG, Stroke Weight not Scaling with Export Scale

    Hi there
I am having some issues exporting illustrator documents to multiple sizes of PNG.
I am actually scripting this, but the issue seems to be more general - hence the posting here.
If you export a PNG through the web and devices tool:
    File->Save for Web & Devices
And you scale the image by 50%, the line weight does not seem to be scaled with the export scale.
In Illustrator->Preferences->General I have Scale Strokes and Effects ticked.
This problem is also apparent when scaling a scripted PNG export through the ExportOptionsPNG24 class.
Is there anything I am missing please - or does anyone know of workarounds?
    Thank you

Thanks for looking into it Kurt.
I can't post the illustrator file in question to the forum.
And, you are right, when I aim to make a demo file from scratch I can't reproduce the problem either.
I am having this difficulty on multiple files though, and they are all quite complex.
I will aim to try and make a file that shows the problem.
The files in question may have symbols that were created in much earlier versions of Illustrator.
I'm not sure if that could do it.
The sequence above shows the output as I export via script to successively smaller scales.
This is by setting the horizontalScale and verticalScale in ExportOptionsPNG24.
I see the same results if scaling in Save for Web & Devices.

  • Can I retain stroke weight when applying brush?

A path automatically goes basic(1) weight when any brush is applied to it. Is there any way to avoid this?

I want to do some perspective-ish illust using scatter brush(which I use for randomness), like lights of cityscape at night or audiences in music concert(larger in the front, smaller in the rear). If it didn't reset weight to 1, I could've easily used transform effect or blend to make cascading paths. But, to acheive what I want, I have to apply scatter brush first, then adjust each path's weight at a time.

  • How to stop changing stroke weights when changing the size of an object in CS5 on Windows 7?

I'm not sure what I did to make this happen or how to change it back, but for some reason when I change the size of an object/line it changes the stroke weight as well. (For example, if I drew an ellipse with stroke weight 2 pt, and then increased the size the stroke weight would be 2.856 pt or some such number instead of 2 pt.) Does anyone know how to change this back?
    Thanks!

Take a look at the Scale Strokes and effects preference either in the general programme preferences or in the flyout menu of the Transform palette.

  • Maintaining Stroke Weight when changing path to brush stroke

Is there a way or an option I am missing to convert my regular paths to a path stroked with a brush profile, while maintining the proper stroke width?
For instance, I have a regular line with a stroke of 5 and then add a brush profile, which then converts the original stroke to whatever the brush was made at.
Can I change this? I am hoping I am missing something with an option or how I make brushes
    Thanks!

    dasikins,
When you apply a Brush to a path, the resulting width of the brush will be the basic brush width multiplied by the path Stroke Weight in points.
Presuming you wish to have a final brush width of 5pt and the basic width is 2.5pt, you will need a path with a Stroke Weght of 2pt because 2*2.5 = 5.
I wonder whether this is relevant or nonsense.

  • Stroke Weights when resizing

I have made a logo design which uses both filled sections and a 1pt weighted line.
But when I resize the logo the stroke weight doesnt shrink accordingly with the design so I have a massive fat line in the design.
I know theres a setting to choose to fix strokes to shrink or expand inkeeping with the design... How???

Thanks very much, you've just saved me a night of looking through Illustrator for Dummies :)
    How appropriate :)

  • Keep stroke weight when zooming into a comp

    Hello
I am building an animation which depicts the building of an element in Photoshop using grid, guides, and bezier paths. I need to represent these items graphically, and not using a screen grab animation.
I need to zoom into a comp up to 800% and show how paths and grid are manipulated in pixel-perfect work. When zooming in, the paths that show the grid and the bezier paths must stay at 1px in width at all zoom levels.
I'll be creating "bezier" strokes using the path tool in AE. I'll be applying a line weight to it in order to show the strokes. When I zoom in, the strokes need to stay the same weight.
What's the easiest way to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    ------------S

You would link the stroke width of e.g. a shape layer to the zoom/ scale with a linear() expression.
    linear(zoom,startzoom,endzoom,startwidth,endwidth)
Fill in values as needed. The actual zoom varable could be linked to a slider ir the scale of the pre- comped main animation in the parent comp...

  • Lock stroke width when scaling?

    Hi,
Is there a way to make the stroke width of a shape remain constant when I scale the shape?
I find it frustrating that my stroke widens as I enlarge and thins out as I shrink the shape.
    Thanks

If you are using the layer scale that's expected since you are scaling everything in the layer.
The easiest way to get what you want is to use the "Transform Control Points" option for Scaling the shape.
-Switch to the edit points tool and select all the control points in you shape.
-From the Edit Menu select"Transform Control Points". This will allow you to rotate and scale the control points. Make sure you have all of the points selected.d
-At this point you can animate the scale (or rotation) for the shape and the width of the stroke will stay the same.
-Use this for all the scales you need to do with this layer.
Remember, as soon as you scale the shape at the layer level you will alter the width of the stroke.

  • Is It Possible To Prevent a Stroke's Weight From Scaling with the Rest of an Object?

I want to animate a person moving off into the distance, but while I want the size of the figure to get smaller, I don't want the weight of the lines that comprise the image to scale down, too. I made this little sample of a person skating (poorly) away from the viewer, and I'd like the line weight to be 9 points in the first frame and the last frame. Is there a setting that allows me to exclude stroke weight when scaling and resizing an object?

If you're asking if you can scale the length of the stroke but not the width, I don't think you'll have much luck there... I'm pretty sure one follows the other.

  • Adjusting font weight?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this question,
but since I'm using Fireworks, I'll ask it here.
Is there a way to adjust font weight when entering text that
will be used to create a graphic (besides the bold command, that
    is)?
I'd like to adjust a font to be a bit heavier than it is
bolded - somewhere halfway between standard and bold. I know that
with CSS you can adjust weight in 10 increments from 100 to 1000,
with 400 being standard. Is there any way to do something like this
    in Fireworks?
    Thanks.

  • How to adjust path stroke weight?

I'm unable to adjust the weight of a path. Here's a 40 sec video (no audio, 1920x1080) that demonstrates I know how to adjust the stroke weight on a path, followed by a demo of it not working when I try to adjust it:
    http://stephenbuck.org/adobe/il-point-width/point-width.html
Here's what I do in the video:
First, on a path that allows the change:
    Select an elipse.
Increase the stroke weight of the elipse.
    Control-Z to undo.
Decrease the stroke weight of the elipse.
The above demonstrates I know how to adjust the path weight (at least I think it does).
Next, on the path that doesn't allow the stroke width to be reduced:
    Select path.
Increase stroke weight to demonstrate it increases.
    Control-Z to undo.
Decrease the stroke weight to .25 to demonstrate it does not reduce in size.
    And that's the problem.
What do I need to do to decrease the weight of the path I am trying to adjust?
    Thanks,
    Buck

    Hi Jacob.
Yes, thank you and I've figured out what has happened. The layers panel included a layer titled "Meridians" and a sublayer titled "<Path>". Each item has an effect applied through the appearance panel, and that is what was causing the problem. I had been meatballing only the <Path> item in the layer panel, which is behind the Meridians layer item. Decreasing <Path> was not noticable because the Meridians layer item was the 5 point weight in front of it... I changed each item to contrasting colors, increased the weight of <Path> to 20pt, and then it was apparent that the Meridian layer effect was the item that needed to be resized.
Somewhere in this process I mistakenly applied the same effect to the Layer and the Path, and that's what caused my little dilemma.
Thanks to you and everyone else who participated in researching this problem. It's solved.

  • Keep stroke weight for EPS when scale it in InDesign

    hi all,
Is it possible to have an object (in an EPS-file which generated by AI) with a stroke width that stays the same, when you scale the EPS in InDesign? if so, how?
    thanks
    AC
    system: windows 7
    InDesign CS6

Everything in the EPS file will change size when you scale it, either scaling it up or scaling it down.
A way to do it and it's not very neat is to copy and paste it from Illustrator into inDesign and scale it that way.
The better option would be to scale it in Illustrator to the size you want and the stroke weights you want and import that into InDesign.

  • Line shifts when I increase stroke weight

    Hi,
I'm using strokes in a document. I have a series of lines that are centered on grid lines; however, when I increase the stroke weight, the line moves as if the top edge of the stroke is anchored and not the center of the line.
I am unable to find any setting to change this, but it is really making my work difficult. Can anyone help with this?
    Thanks!

    gleake,
In cases like this, the first guess is Align to Pixel Grid.
You may select everything and then untick Align to Pixel Grid in the Transform palette, and also untick Align New Objects to Pixel Grid in the flyout options.
You may avoid document types with that as default (RGB for web and the like) or change the default for such documents.

  • Problems with Illustrator CS6 not accepting stroke weights with decimal points

So I have been using Illustrator for almost 10 years and have never run into this one. When enter a stroke weight on a line with a decimal point like .25 or 4.5 is keeps rounding the number up. For example I enter 0.75 and it makes it 1 point or I enter 5.5 and it makes it 6 point. Whether I enter the number manually or pick from the drop down (0.25, 0.5 or 0.75) it keeps rounding my strokes to even numbers. How did I do and how do I fix it?

Thanks from me too! Was also very frustrated by this.
