Adjust subtitles

I was given stl files for subtitles on several tracks.
The reference movies that were used to generate the time code must have been running slow or something, because the subs drift out of synch over time. Most of the videos are in the 12-16 minute range, so the adjustment is fairly painless. But i've got a 55 minute vid and a 76 minute vid that drift out of synch around eight minutes in, and the drift gets progressively worse until by the end, the subs are almost 30 seconds late.
Is there an easier way to adjust these other than dragging each individual sub ahead, and then doing the same with the next? Obviously I can select all the subs in a range, but it doesn't appear that I can move them all together.

  • Writing to mplayer's stdin from bash script.

I was just fulling with some bash script in order to automate the listening of my favorite radio stations via mplayer and a bash script. Going through the mplayers manual I saw the option -slave.
    -slave
This option switches on slave mode. This is intended for use of MPlayer as a backend to other programs. Instead of intercepting keyboard events, MPlayer will read simplistic command lines from its stdin. The section SLAVE MODE PROTOCOL explains the syntax.
At first I thought "ok, easy". I made some tries like "mplayer -slave -quiet .... < /tmp/stdin &" and then something like "echo -e 'mute' > /tmp/stdin" but it wouldn't work.
Is it possible to send a process to the background inside a bash script and then write to it's stdin?
    SLAVE MODE PROTOCOL
If the -slave option is given, playback is controlled by a line-based protocol. Each line must contain one command otherwise one of the following tokens:
    Commands
    seek <value> [type=<0/:1/:2>]
Seek to some place in the movie. Type 0 is a relative seek of +/:- <value> seconds. Type 1 seek to <value> % in the movie. Type 2 is a seek to an absolute position of <value> seconds.

    alt_src_step <value>
When more than one source is available it selects the next/:previous one (only supported by asx playlist).

FIFO's are awesome and can be (ab)used for a lot of cool stuff.
I've written some applications that do just what you are trying to do ( http://github.com/trapd00r/rmcd and http://github.com/trapd00r/RPD ), if you need inspiration.
As for the backgrounding - you want to make a 'daemon', to detach from the running shell. See man fork, man 3 setsid and man 3 wait / man 3 waitpid (or my daemonize() function).

  • Problems trying to adjust imported subtitle file

I'm trying to move some of the subtitle timings around slightly by dragging backward and forward and trimming etc but some refuse to budge. Any suggestions?

It had me puzzled too until I realised I had exceeded the
amount of webspace my ISP had granted me. By uploading a FLV file
to my ISP, I had exceeded the 100mb they grant me for nothing. It
was tricky to work this out because there didn't seem to be any
indication that the flv file hadn't uploaded.
Check your webspace allocation to see if it's the same

  • Script for moving multiple subtitle clips in the works - EXAMPLES NEEDED!

    Hi everyone!
One severe deficiency of DVD Studio Pro is the inability to move multiple subtitle clips back or forward in a track by an arbitrary offset.
I ran into this problem while I was creating a DVD from an EyeTV recording of a DVB broadcast, the subtitles from which have to be extracted to a SON file and a bunch of .bmp images with a separate piece of software, ProjectX. For some reason, ProjectX messed up the subtitle timecodes, so I had to move the entire track forward by a fixed amount. Unable to do this inside DSP, and unable to find tools that would do this for SON files, I set out to code my own tool with Python.
Currently, I have a very simplistic working version of the script, which I successfully used to shift the timecodes of the aforementioned SON file.
This got me thinking: I can't be the only one who has faced this problem. So, in the spirit of giving something back to the community, I thought I'd try my hand at turning this little script into a versatile tool for timescaling several different subtitle formats.
If possible, I would like to receive real-life examples of several different plaintext (no binary formats, thanks) subtitle formats from you guys, both those that DSP supports and those that it doesn't.
For now the tool only shifts entire tracks and works on the command line, but who knows, maybe I'll create a GUI at some point and add the ability to shift specific subtitle clips instead of whole tracks - time permitting, of course.
If you think you might have some juicy subtitles laying around, please reply or contact me directly by e-mail: elamaton (at) nic.fi. Don't worry, I won't redistribute anything you send me, it will only be used as test data.

Sounds like a very good idea... but have you seen Subtitler:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26322
Not to say you won't make a better version, and I'd be delighted if you did! Manipulating subs in DVDSP is not something I do any more - I use an external text editor for any job where more than a few subs are needed.
The problem in DVDSP is that you cannot extract the subs directly, you have to export an track item description which has the subs and time code buried within the XML. You might find that PHP will give you a web based tool to extract the subs and time codes and write a text file, which you can then manipulate.
In fact, wouldn't a web based tool be a good idea? People could upload the track description, it would export the subs and you could get it to adjust the timecodes and write a text file back in the correct format to import back in to DVDSP. Once the subs are in a text file it is a simple matter to manipulate them further...

  • Semi-opaque background rectangle for subtitles

There should be a simple answer for this, but can't seem to find it after hours combing through the archives.
I want to have subtitles for a documentary using FCP HD (no plug-ins) and have succeeded creating the text. But I want a transluscent box in which the text appears, to help its readability... darkish box for white text, or whitish box for black text. I've fooled around with "Shapes--Rectangle" but am just improvising and the results are dismal. I'd be very grateful for a walk-through for a graphics newbie.
    Thanks!

I want to have subtitles for a documentary using FCP HD (no plug-ins) and have succeeded creating the text. But I want a transluscent box in which the text appears, to help its readability... darkish box for white text, or whitish box for black text.
This might not be feasible if you've already created all your subtitles - as opposed to having created only a few for testing purposes - but what you want can be accomplished all in one spot: the Outline Text generator in FCP.
If you go via the 'A' button in the Viewer: Text > Outline Text. If you prefer the Effects tab: Video Generator > Text > Outline Text.
Anyhow, once Outline Text is loaded into the Viewer...
Hit the Controls tab and scroll down, to reveal the Background Settings
By default, the background is 'turned off.' That is, Horizontal Size and Vertical Size are both set to 0.
To get it working, I usually set Horizontal Size to 106 and Vertical size to 102.
Alter Back Soft to 2. (That is, unless you want a hard edge to your box)
Adjust Back Opacity if you want, though I find that setting Opacity to less than 40 starts to get counter productive. I usually leave it at 50, myself.
Optional: alter your Text Settings to move away from (or completely eliminate) the not-so-subtle default settings for Outline Width. (50!!!)
(Not to mention adjust all the other font settings to your liking, but I think you're old hat at all that now.)
Like I said, not the easiest adjustment to make if you've got all your subtitles done, but certainly the simplest way to do what you're asking (if it helps in the future).

  • Timecode offset in subtitles

I just imported an STL file with 230 subtitles. They are offset by 10 hrs and I want to adjust them. I follow the manual and use an offset for the track and use the asset time code. Then I set the $TapeOffset to TRUE. But this makes DVD SP refuse to import. So I use search and change to change all my time codes. Easy but it turns out they're off by a couple off seconds.
Why can't I offset or drag the subtitles somehow. I can only move them one by one. Very NOT Mac feeling, I must say. Or am I stupid? Is there an easy solution?
    Oh, its DVD SP 3.

yea - the most recent versions seem to have done some funky things. you should look into the preferences, because you can specify that it do everything as unicode, and that should retain any special characters. while they may display wrong in STL Edit, it's always possible that they'll appear correctly in DVD SP - if there's a text encoding mis-match that can happen.

  • Possible to place subtitles beneath the image with 16:9?

    Hi everybody,
I couldn't find away to put subtitles beneath the image with 16:9 like it would be possible with such a video in FCP: having the 16:9 video in a 4:3 image, placing the subtitle in the black under the image - the issue with FCP is that later the text becomes blurry ...
    Any ideas..? best, s

If you're looking to adjust the positioning of subtitle text based on the playback system's aspect-ratio, no, DVDSP is not able to do this. This is made even more frustrating by the fact that this was possible in the Spruce product that DVDSP is based on and because many clients demand what you're asking for (subtitles always appear under letterboxed video on 4:3 monitors).
The only viable 'alternative' that I've found is to adjust the Y offset of the subtitle stream so that the bottom line (or only line) is in the letterbox area. The downside to that is, on 16:9 displays, the subtitles appear very low (though I've never encountered a setup where they are ever cut off.
If some sample code helps, this is what I use:
// Begin Font & Formatting Data
    $FontName = Arial
    $Bold = True
    $FontSize = 28
    $ColorIndex1 = 7
    $ColorIndex2 = 1
    $ColorIndex3 = 1
    $ColorIndex4 = 3
    $TextContrast = 14
    $Outline1Contrast = 15
    $Outline2Contrast = 15
    $BackgroundContrast = 0
    $HorzAlign = center
    $VertAlign = bottom
    $XOffset = 0
    $YOffset = 20
    $TapeOffset = True
// End Font & Formatting Data

  • Why do burned in subtitles cut off on bottom of screen?

I'm watching a Foreign film through NetFlix. The subtitles are burned into the film already and are part of the film. An example is Tous Les Matins du Monde. These burned in subtitles are being cut off on the bottom of the screen. I've tried all the available aspect ratios on my TV and there do not appear to be any setting on the Apple TV Ver.2 to adjust the aspect. I've tried the Apple TV on two other flat screens all of different makes and the same problem exists - burned in subtitles cut off.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem here. Watching mostly foreign or older films. Displayed with a black frame around the content, and everything appears squished. Top frame is cropped.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Applescript/Pages and adjusting column width (and paragraph style)

I was hoping that some someone might know how to adjust the width of individual columns in Pages using Applescript. It seems like it should be a simple task, and I can adjust the overall width/height of the table, but I haven't found a way to adjust the column width. Alternatively, I could have the program create the table in Numbers and copy/paste it into Pages, but I'd imagine that would get a bit messy and wouldn't allow me to use a hanging indent in the cells (to the best of my knowledge).
Also, is there a way to adjust the paragraph style used by the text in the table? Otherwise, I could just use a templet and define the the default table style appropriately. (Though not the most elegant solution).
Thanks in advance for your help!
(In case it helps, the script I'm working on parses an unformatted inventory and parses it into paragraphs/tables.)

  • Why brightness changes when subtitles appear?

Good evening, I’d like to ask for advice about a problem I found on iTunes running on Mavericks. I convert a video content (using handbrake)  adding subtitles from .srt file. When I watch that movie, if (and onlu when) subtitles appear, picture brightness becomes clearer. The same file opened using  VLC has no problem. My mac mini (latest generation entry-level) is connected via HDMI to a LCD TV. Searching the net I found nothing, does anyone have an idea on how to fix it? Thanks!

I am experiencing the same issue and it seems to be indeed a problem caused solely by iTunes as I only see this issue with movies (rented from the iTunes store and) played back with iTunes. Streaming videos in Safari (e.g. Netflix) and activating subtitles doesn't show the brightness adjustment issues.
It's really annoying as dark movie scenes become almost unwatchable as the brightness level changes all the time. I hope that Apple will fix this issue in the next release of iTunes or Mavericks whichever is causing this issue. In the meantime, I will look for alternative movie players. I'll give VLC a try, but wonder if it can play back movies rented from the iTunes store.

  • How to move multiple subtitle clips?

    Hi!
I want to move multiple subtitle clips in the timeline. How can i do that? I want to select multiple subtitles and then drag them to left about 2 minutes. Just click+drag doesn't work. I didn't find help in the manual also...
    Waiting for the small tip.
    Timo

    Hi Timo
As you have discovered you can't drag all the subs in the timeline - you can only drag one at a time... which is why you will find most people recommend creating your subtitles outside of DVD-SP and then importing them. If you have to adjust them you can then go back to this file created outside and adjust the in outs of the timecode.
One way you could save the situation (I''m assuming you made the subs in DVD-SP) is to export an item description of the track then use a little utility called Subtitler
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26322
This can extract those subtitles back out of the item description and can (I believe) adjust the timings as well and create a DVD-SP friendly STL file which you can re-import into SP... then if any others need tweaking you can go back to that external file adjust, re-import...
I've only ever tested it to see if it coul indeed extract a sub from an item description so can'tr vouch for it's other abilities - we normally use Lemony or Subtitle Workshop on a PC to adjust subs
    Hope that's some help

  • Look of image-based subtitles in Adobe Encore

    Hello,
I'm using Adobe Encore CS5.1 and I would like to create a simple Blu-ray with image-based selectable subtitles. For this I produce a FAB Image Script with the appropriate PNG files in an external application and import the FAB Image Script into Encore. So far, everything works fine and it is no problem to get the subtitles in sync to the video/audio. The problem is that the subtitles look ugly (extremly pixelated edges) as soon they are imported into Encore although the PNG files look perfectly sharp with smooth edges when I open them in Photoshop.
Does anybody know what I have to do that the subtitles also look nice in Encore? I played around with the import settings in Encore ("Map Color" window), but I didn't find a way to bring the subtitles into my Encore timeline in an acceptable style.
I would appreciate any help very much!
Can it be that I have to choose another option to produce and import the subtitles?
Does anybody know if there is a difference between Encore CS5.1 and CS6 regarding this topic?
    Thank you!
    Best regards
    Mark

No, I am surprised that this hasn't been sorted out. My feeling is that I must be doing something wrong. I have been playing around wiuth subs in encore, and the text feature has been producing the best results. Check this out:
Even with this I had to adjust the size, kern, etc, and sometimes the adjustments were really small. I would love more advice on the subject.
    Thanks!

  • Cannot enable Subtitles in QuickTime 10.2

I'm struggling to enable subtitles while playing mp4 video file. Subtitles file has .srt extension. Both video and .srt files have the same name.
I went to View -> Subtitles to turn on the subtitles. It is shown that Subtitles is Off. However the selection is faded/grey
(shown below). so I can't really do anything to reverse that.
Does anyone know how could I solve the problem? Does it mean that I have to buy a pro version for QT or something?
Still learning how to fully function everything that I can get out of a Mac.

Students in my class recorded some voice overs in multipe clips.  We want to combine them into one track in quicktime 10.2.  However the choice to copy the track is grayed out.  How can we combine the tracks into one in quicktime 10.2?
You don't. Use QT 7 Pro or GarageBand instead. (Video editors will also merge multiple audio tracks but they are likely more limited than QT 7 Pro which allows up to 99 data tracks.) GarageBand, also based on older QT 7 Pro technology, allows you to segment tracks, set track or selected track segment volumes to duck track or track segments, adjust or "rubberband" master track volumes, adjust stereo pan for track or selected track segments as well as, "slide" tracks or track segments along the time axis and apply numerous enhancements beyond my ability to even remember here.

  • Only first subtitle line is shown since last AppleTV 2 update

    Hi,
I use handbrake to encode video with soft subtitles, since the last software update It only shows the first subtitle line for everything I've encoded, is anyone experiencing the same problem? Does anyone know a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

    Everyone:
    Here is some more evidence:
    1. I thought about the issue, and the distortion seems to follow the cursor in all cases, though sometimes the effect remains after the cursor has been moved away. So, maybe it's related to (drum roll) the cursor? What can I change about the cursor? Its size, in the Universal Access preference. Unfortunately, adjusting the cursor size to maximum and back to minimum has no effect. Oh, well, it was a good idea.
    2. Why don't I post a screen-shot of the distortion somewhere? So I put Grab on timer and fooled with the cursor in this very window until the text above "...Universal Access..." appeared with its lower pixels missing, waited until the timer expired. But.... The screen shot DOES NOT SHOW THE PROBLEM. In three completely different trials, the text in the screen shot was flawless. Hmmm, that should be a very good clue for someone who understands how the screen is maintained in MacOS.
    3. Right now I have two windows side-by-side mostly filling my screen. On the left, a large photo in Preview. On the right, the Main window of Entourage 2004. I bring Preview to the front and I move the cursor to the approximate horizontal center of Preview's toolbar, which is very near the top of the screen, and I move the cursor vertically towards the bottom of the screen. About half-way, I observe, well, a ripple running across the photo, no --wait-- across the entire screen. Where the ripple meets text (in the Entourage window at the right), it distorts more or less as I've already described. I think it is important that the problem occurs in all windows, not the frontmost. Oh, yes, I've moved this window down near the bottom of the screen and, so far, I've seen no problems. So the problem appears to only occur at mid-screen, vertically. That's where one usually works...
    Ideas, anyone?
    TIA
    Henry

  • Pixelation of video when subtitles come up

    Hi
Using FCE3.5 and I have my main clips in the V1 channel. I've superimposed subtitle text generator clips in the V2 channel to put people's names and job titles in when they are on screen. When the subtitle comes up it pixelates the V1 video clips until the title clip ends. Have tried adjusting the transparency of the title clip to 90% as suggested in one guide I have, but no change. The background for the title clip is the default black, I wonder if this is causing the problem. What have I done wrong?!

A properly made title that's been properly exported and encoded shouldn't do that. Sorry I can't tell without seeing it.
