Adjusting audio DVD Studio Pro

I've imported a tune to play over the menu in DVD Studio Pro. But I can't figure out how to adjust the volume.
It's very very loud. I know this is not the DVD Studio Pro forum, but the other forums don't get as much traffic, and I was hoping you could help me.
Thank you so much.
Jess

What I did was create a droplet in compressor from the Apple preset for Dolby 2.0 with dialogue normalization tweaked to -15dbFS. The workflow is as simple as dragging my menu music file to the droplet, them importing the resulting .ac3 into the DVDSP project.
On a side note it does seem that menu music in DVDSP is too loud if left alone. It's just one of those little quirks I've learned to work around. Whenever you're unsure of whether DVDSP can do something the rule of thumb is, DVDSP does not entail in its functionality any editing of any source media. You can move things around, script things to happen, etc but changes to the assets can't be done in the application.

  • Adj. audio levels - transparent to DVD Studio Pro

I've reviewed posts about audio levels and I understand it must be done outside DVD Studio Pro. I've run into several work-flow bumps that pose these questions...
When I use an app to raise or lower the audio level when I "Save As" or export to match the original parameters (48k, 16bit, Stereo, big endian) DVD Studio Pro will reject the new file (that has been used in the project already) with this error msg.... "file no longer uses a supported graphics format"
What is the fastest and most transparent way to change audio levels? (to aviod this rejection by DVD Studio Pro?) Ideally one would simply "Save" after the adjustment vs Save As or export.
On a related score, other apps allow you to substitute assets. So provided the running time and basic (audio) parameters are the same, can one do this in DVD Studio Pro?
In my haste for a solution in a simple dvd demo reel I was making I was willing to trash the pair of quicktime files (m2 & aiff) after manually purging them form the project, then re-importing and reassigning a new pair that included the adjusted audio. Even in a simple project this workaround was no fun. Suggestions? Thanks in advance.
    Paul

As this "imported" file is the only thing in it, I'm not sure what multitrack means in this example but I'll experiment. When you say "editor in a new tab" I wish I understood what this "editor" tab is as it does not appear in the pdf manual. Is there another name for this tab-window? Exporting the multitrk proj would put me in the same mismatch pickle I was in to start with.
    Thanks,
    Paul
This is strange. Are you viewing it in a "multitrack"
project? Once double-clicked on, the file should open
in the editor under a new tab, which has the same
name as the file. In this editor you can perform
whatever is necessary. If this continues to fail, try
exporting the multitrack project with the same name
and file type as the original to replace it. That
will work also. Hope it works this time.

  • AAC audio file increase in size when imported into DVD Studio Pro

    Hello all!
I just encountered a very unique issue with the DVD Studio Pro. I used the compressor to export my video as an MPEG2 file and my audio as AAC file. After the compression my audio file had an .mpg4 extention and was about 160MB in size. When I imported it into my DVD Studio Pro project, however, the audio increased in size to 1.2 GB. I tried so many different compressions, but the problem really is (I think) that the file bumps up in size once imported into DVD SP project. Is there anything in preferences that I need to adjust or change? Please help!
    Thank you.

    Hi
I'm a little lost now with versions history, but if you have A.Pack in your App folder, then must use it. Check this tutorial: Encoding AC3 with A.Pack.
Compressor 2 and 3 has AC3 encoding inside the main application.

  • Having a problem with audio in DVD Studio Pro with the finished copy

I am making a DVD of a clip I had transferred from a mini DV. All the audio was present when I transferred it. I had then turned it into an MPEG movie format (.mpg). When I play that clip there is audio. Then I compressed the file on Compressor. I selected the file format by choosing Apple > DVD > DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes > MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass (the clip was about an hour and 20min long) and compressed the clip. I then opened DVD studio pro, made a menu, and then added this new file (MPEG-2 6.2Mbps 2-pass). I burned the DVD and put it into my DVD player. The picture was great and everything worked fine except there was no audio. How do I get audio into this DVD? I have tried compressing my .mpg file into the Dolby Digital Professional 2.0 option that is under DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes, but when I try importing that into DVD studio pro it a message pops up saying "Incompatible format." It might also help mentioning that when I saw the file size on the Dolby Digital Professional 2.0 after compressing it, it said Zero kb. How would I get audio onto this DVD? I would really appreciate your help, I tried to be as detailed as I could. This DVD is for a family member and is urgent, so anyone who can help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you so much.

If you don't want to go back and recapture the tape you need to understand that MPG files need to be "DeMuxed" to extract the audio. My recommendation would be to use the free MPEG Streamclip and then select your MPG to be Demuxed into an AIFF file. That AIFF file will then need to be converted to an AC3 file, similar to what you did with the video.

  • DVD Studio Pro not playing back audio of asset converted from FCP via compressor.

    I exported project via compressor:
    File Extension: m2v
    Estimated file size: 4.34 GB
    Video Encoder
        Format: M2V
        Width: 720
        Height: 480
Pixel aspect ratio: NTSC CCIR 601/DV
        Crop: None
        Frame rate: 29.97
        Frame Controls: Off
        Aspect ratio: 4:3
        Field dominance: Bottom first
        Average data rate: 3.6 (Mbps)
        2 Pass VBR enabled
            Maximum data rate: 7.5 (Mbps)
        High quality
        Best motion estimation
Closed GOP Size: 15, Structure: IBBP
        DVD Studio Pro meta-data enabled
This took about 7.5 hours.  I exported the audio separately as AC3. Finder plays it sound & pictures.  Quicktime plays the video.  DVD Studio Pro, when I drag the assets (video, audio) to the timeline editor, so I can play it in the viewer, it plays the audio the video is black.  No setting in view or any other setting will get it to play the video.  This project is due to ship today and I don't want to re import it if I don't have to.
I exported this project before the MPEG2 export as a Qicktime with .mov suffix.  This plays alright, but there is artifacting around motion.  I think this is due to low VBR, but don't know.  Can ayone help?

    If I may chime in...
I'm a little confused on the "what plays what" part, but  all that really matters is what DVDSP sees/plays.
I've worked on a system like yours and what I'd recommend is:
    1. NEVER export via Compressor. It's just ungodly slow on anything less than a Quad. Export a self contained QuickTime Movie using the first export option and use that to feed Compressor.
    2. Segment your output into manageable clips (I like 15-20 minutes) both to perfect the encoding and so you aren't re-encoding the whole show if something goes sour. It will all play fine as long as it's all in the same DVDSP timeline.
From what you describe, I'm thinking you're on an early version of Compressor that had A-Pack as the AC-3 encoder. This is no biggie, I mention it mostly to verify. Early Compressor was good too.
Make maybe a 5 minute piece to tune up. Just export as normal, then into Compressor. Your encoding values seem about right. Get the AV pair into DVDSP and it should play. I'm guessing that part of your problem is that the processor is fighting to handle the project size. Build the test clip project and look at it in DVD Player to view what would have been burned. If all looks OK, go for it. If not, bring back the results for discussion. This should be a snap, it's just a really big project.  Keep your head up, I had a friend do a 225-minute disk on his G5...

  • Major Problem with audio from Final Cut to DVd Studio Pro

I am posting this problem again because no further responses have been received regarding my first post. I purchased an MR-HD100 Firestore device from Focus Enhancements. When I use clips from it alone or with other clips created by digitizing from min DV tape on a sequence or timeline the audio works fine in Final Cut. When I import any type of file and believe me I have been trying all kinds of suggestions and wasting almost a dozen DVDs. Whether it be a Final Cut QT file, going straight to compressor and producing an MPEG-2 file and a dolby audio file .ac3 importing them into DVD SP and making the adjustments that MR. Harbsmeier suggested DIAL NORM at -31dbfs and COMPRESSION MODE to NONE, as well as the suggestion to make an aif file with the audio and importing it into DVD SP as well as the video. I get the same result with every try, the clips made with the firestore are so low you cannot hear them. NOTHING WORKS!!!!. And yes I have tried making a DVD with just digitized footage and yes it turned out fine. I called Apple support today and that gentlemen basically told me I am out of warranty so phone help was not available. However, he made a suggestion of changing sequence presets in Final Cut which has now developed into another problem. I have messed up my settings so bad I don't know where I am I can't LOG & CAPTURE in the manner I used to ???? Could someone please advise as to why this problem exists and the correction to resolve it. I do not understand why the audio works fine playing the sequence on the timeline in Final Cut. It plays fine after making a Final Cut QT file. AND it plays fine in simulation mode in DVD Studio Pro. However after you burn a DVD the audio from the firestore clips are not to be heard unless you crank up the speakers or TV to it's maximum level and you can barely make it out. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME Projects are stacking up and was really hoping to go tapeless

Try building the project to your desktop and then open the Video_TS in the Mac DVD player application.
How does it play/sound?  This application is the best way to see and hear how your burned DVD should play vs. just using simulator and burning.
Just to clarify- are you taking your FC QT file into Compressor and creating a MPG-2 and AC3 file or are you bringing your FC QT directly into DSP?
What codec are you exporting from FC? ProRes422, DV, H264?
Open the FC QT in QT and apple+I to see this.
What does it say for audio?

  • DVD Studio Pro recognizes video file as audio only

    Dear all,
After encoding a file in Compressor using the HD DVD 60 min encoding setting (H.264 format), DVD Studio Pro recognizes this file as if it's audio, while it is in fact a video (I've checked and tested that).
The strange thing is that I encoded a file a few weeks ago using the same settings and then everything went well.
Any idea what this could be? I'm using DVD Studio Pro 4.2.1 and Compressor 3.0.5.
Thanks in advance and best regards,
    Tim Metz

It is very likely that your conversion choices involve CODEC's, that PrE cannot handle.
Can you convert to a DV-AVI Type II, in the conversion program, as a test?
If not, then please run your final converted file through either G-Spot, or MediaInfo, to determine which CODEC was used for the problem video.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
PS - some players, like VLC, contain many CODEC's for playback, that are not installed on the system, and many of those, even if installed, would not work with PrE.

  • Audio sync drifts w quicktime or mpeg-2 ac3 in quicktime or dvd studio pro

Sorry to post twice but question wasn't asked right so I posted again with the subject correct as I didn't know how to delete other that said audio drifted opening in compressor which isn't the case this is about audio drifting that is perfect in a final cut pro sequence, perfect when I look at a self contained quicktime made, but when I import into dvd studio pro even before making a dvd and just looking at the video and sound in tracks as assets, it's already drifting, and is still the same if I make a dvd:
    This is very perplexing.
My audio is spot on for sync in final cut sequences.
When I make a quicktime self contained and open it in final cut it is also perfect.
If I open that same finished self contained file in quicktime or place it in dvdstudio pro, there's what looks like moments the picture is faster than the sound but not always....it is not a lot like maybe 5 frames or so sometimes worse at times...this project is 90 minutes...it occurs in and out throughout not just at the top or the end.
This is the same both for the quicktime self contained with its aiff files and the mpeg with ac3 files the same amount of drift I can see when dropped into dvdstudio pro in the same places it appears...I checked the source audio files and don't see a difference
sound is mostly source 16 bit, there are music parts that were originally 24 but this isn't necessarily where this drift occurs it occurs in places where it's just dialogue.
Compressor version is 3.05 final cut studio 2 with latest updates

I opened two files they do the same things when they go into studio pro
    the quicktime file
    fps 23.98
    rate 24.55 mbits/s
    size 720x480
    actual the same
    playing fps (available while playing)
    the mpeg 2:
    720x404
    fps 23.98
    data size 3.85
    rate 6191.42kbits/s
this is just the quicktime self contained file as I said if I open it in final cut it's right in sync, in quicktime I see the same drift as when I open this in dvd studio pro the same as with the mpeg 2 file I make in compressor...
the pixel discrepancy for whatever it means this is an anamorphic rendering in the nest just so you're aware

  • Dual audio tracks in dvd studio pro

Is there a way to play two audio tracks at the same time? I have a documentary setup with chapters and would like to add low level music under the commentary to mask room noise. I am hoping not to have to do in my editing program and just add it in DVD studio pro!

DVD SP is an authoring program, not an editing/compositing arena.
You need to go back to your NLE or an audio program to do this.

  • No audio in simulator or viewer - DVD Studio Pro

First project on DVD studio pro.
I imported MPEG2 and AC-3 on the timeline, but when trying to play on either the viewer or simulator there is no audio.

Try to preview just the AC3 by double-clicking on it (assuming that all your system audio stuff is working...)  if it plays, you may have an issue with the disk your MPEG-2/AC3 source is on.
If the AC3 doesn't play, you'll want to go back to the source clip you used in Compressor to assure that the audio was exported from the FCP timeline. If the source clip has audio, you'll need to re-open the source in Compressor, add the appropriate codec, test it in Compressor using the Preview function, then transcode it again.
Obviously if the audio was good in the timeline, then an export error occurred.
Post back where the chain broke.
    Nevermind...

  • Output Audio from DVD Studio Pro works on some DVD's but not others

    Hello All,
Would really appreciate any help here.
My project in final cut pro 6 has audio and it plays fine on the computer as well as the dvd studio pro simulator. I send the final cut pro file to compressor and then to dvdsp to burn. Everything works fine except when I play it in some dvd players I get no sound. I have another dvd player that plays everything with no problem. This is a big problem as I can't determine what kind of player a client has.
Is there something I need to fix in final cut pro, compressor or dvdsp?
Thanks a bunch in advance for any help anyone can provide.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Sync Issues and Audio Drop-out from FCP to DVD Studio Pro

I have edited a piece in FCP 5.1.4 and all audio/video is in perfect sync. I have been using this program for several years with no issues, until now. Upon exporting with compressor and importing into DVD Studio Pro, the audio is out of sync by 15 seconds and after that first 15 seconds there is simply NO audio, period.
Any ideas? Please send the calvary...tight deadline and the hanging rope is getting shorter and shorter by the minute!

Could be something got corrupted in DVD SP (preferences). I have had my audio act strangely and playback getting bogged down. Repairing permissions and deleting prefs works for this one for me. Did you do any recent upgrades to the OS or QuickTime?

  • MP3 audio cd's and DVD Studio Pro???

I need to know if DVD Studio Pro can be used to author cd or dvd programs containing mp3 audio tracks only along with graphics for menu pages. If not, is there another software program for Mac that will do this? I am working on creating a cd product featuring the narration of the Bible in mp3 format and want to create an authored cd with title pages and button selections, auto-run, etc. I would appreciate receiving any information anyone can provide. Thanks, Chris, for your response. If I understand correctly, mp3 tracks are not compatible with DVDSP as mp3. As I have looked elsewhere on this subject I've learned my primary objective is to create a cd with autorun function and would like to know if there is an apple software program that offers that feature using mp3 tracks and some graphics-menu page, title page, etc. So far, I have determined that there is none and will have to go with one of the Windows options using a pc.

  • I can't get the audio compressed small enough for DVD Studio Pro

It's only 89 or 96MB.It always ends up 1GB in DVDSP 4. I have Compressor 2 on a Mac G5 The video for 1.5 hours is a desirable size and quality but even when I make the audio file small, when I bring it into DVD Studio Pro it comes out 1GB or more. Is there any way to change the way DVD sees this asset? I am working on a Mac G5 Dual Proces. from 2003 / 8GB memory

Look to see if you still have A.Pack installed on your computer; it should be in the Applications folder on your boot drive.  That's what was used for AC3 encoding prior to Compressor 3.   In the meantime, you could lower the bit rate of the video in order to use the AIF audio file on your DVD.

  • Export settings for quicktime movie to use in DVD Studio Pro

    The workflow:
I created a movie and did extensive sound adjustments in iMovie and a few video edits, and exported it to a quicktime format:
    compression H.264
    Quality: High
    Frame reordering: yes
    Encoding mode: multi-pass
    Dimensions: 1280x720
Since then I upgraded to FCS, and tried to create a DVD with DVD SP and import the movie, and I get this error:
    Import error:
One or more files failed to import. Common reasons for this are that they do not match the current project's video standard or their file format is not supported.
I'm fairly sure I have matching video standard...and the file format has always been supported before.
I imported the quicktime (.mov) file to FCP and added some edits, recreated the chapter markers, and early on there was a pop-up that said my movie format did not match the project settings, so I checked the "okay" to adjust the video file to match.
When I finished, I exported the file from FCP to a quicktime movie with the "current settings" that have always worked with DVD Studio Pro before, and I'm getting the same error.
I don't know where the problem is.  Both the original movie I created in iMovie and the movie I recreated in FCS will import to iDVD.  I wanted the better quality production from DVDSP....
I no longer have the iMovie project file.  (I thot I was done.)  I do  have the original footage, but I'm already three days in and hoping to  avoid starting over.
I would sure appreciate any help!
    Thanks!

The specifications you listed are the problem.
I can't comment on iMovie -don't use it personally.
From FCP, you would export a self contained movie using the current Timeline settings (not H.264 ever)
Bring that file into Compressor and apply one of the time based DVD presets that the running time of your movie fits into. This will produce a MPEG 2 video file and an AC3 audio file. Bring both into DVDSP and author.
A DVD video is always standard def 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL).
Converting the output from FCP to H.264 is adding an unneeded compression stage that will compromize quality -because DVD assets are always MPEG 2 / AC3. Even if DVDSP accepts that H.264 file, it gets transcoded again using DVDSP's own compression system.
All of this is covered in the DVDSP user manual. Take the time to read it. DVD authoring is complicated if you just jump in and start poking around, simple if you take the time to understand the basics.
