Adjusting canvas size

I am new to photoshop cc and have just bought it.  Having never used it before, I don't know if I am doing it the right way.  I recently joined a photo club and am submitting digital images which have to be 1400 x 1050 and the canvas size has to be 1400 x 1050.  I have tried to do this in photoshop cc, but it is not saving properly.  I am going to image - canvas size  and then  adding the dimensions I need and then trying to save, but it is not saving.  Please help
Thanks
Jane

Jane, image size is something that causes more issues in camera clubs than any other, and I think they have not been helping you by mentioning canvas size.
You should be using Image Size, (Ctrl Alt i)
Click to check Resample
If the box next to Width is in cm or inches, change it to Pixels
Enter 1400 in the width.
_IF_ that leaves the height more than 1050, then enter 1050 for height.  This will make the width less than 1400, but the rules for Projected Images usually state a Maximum of 1400 wide, or 1050 high, so you have to use the appropriate one.
Ignore the resolution setting.  It is irrelevant for projected images.
All you have to do now is knock them dead by winning all the competitions   But please don't get disheartened if the judges make stupid comments.  Most camera club competition judges make a LOT of VERY stupid comments.

  • PSD files canvas size changes?

    Hi all,
    Working in FCP (6.0.4) and noticing the importing of certain PSD files don't maintain their original canvas size. I need PSDs in order to have a transparent background but don't understand why this happens. Older versions seemed to handle this but for some reason it's doing this and not sure if it's playing up.
    thanks guys
    Chuck

    Your PSD graphics need to be contained in a file that has the same dimensions as your video.
    If your graphics came from another source, such as a print ad, they will most likely not be the same as your video.
    Make a blank Photoshop document. Either from the presets for video available in PS or one of your own. The presets are available by going to File > New and choosing from the Preset selection button.
    You can set options for transparent background etc, here too.
    Copy the content of the original graphics file and paste it into the new PSD that you just created.
    Use the Transform controls to adjust size and position as required.
    Aspect ratio controls are in the "Image" menu bar item of Photoshop, should you need them.

  • Question about image size, canvas size and Picture frame

    Hi,
    This has always been a little confusing so let me describe what my question is:
    Assume I have a created a new PSD that is 8 1/2 x 11.
    The canvas size is the same 8 1/2 x 11.
    I want to put a border around the picture (say 1/2 of an inch all around), and put the finished picture in a Picture frame.  After it is in the frame, you would be able to see the entire picture plus the border.
    Q.  Should I change (reduce image size) of the PSD to (for this example), 8 x 10 1/2.      Then increase the canvas size to 8 1/2 x 11.  After I increased the canvas size, do a  Paint Bucket fill with white (to create the White border)?  then print the changed size PSD on 8 1/2 x 11 paper so that it will fit into a 8 1/2 x 11 picture frame
    I realize I could have just created the new PSD to be 8 x 10 1/2 in the first place.
    Hope I made this somewhat clear.
    Bob

    1: Decrease the size as you describe.
    2. Go to File>New or Ctrl N
    3. Make the box 8.5x11. Make sure the other data conforms to your image.
    4. Now,holding down Ctrl-Shift, Drag the image to the new box and release the mouse. Your image will be centered in the box.
    Note: there may be a method to do this including any adjustment layers, but I usually only do this as a last step, flattening a copy of the working file.

  • Photoshop Touch Canvas Size? Or precision Crop?

    I frequently want to crop an image to a new aspect ratio, equivalent to the Canvas Size feature of desktop Photoshop.
    Does PS Touch allow precise canvas size adjustment?
    The Resize Image option lets me key in the exact smaller dimension, but now I'm using the Crop tool to adjust the other, and it can be awkward to drag to the exact pixel size. I'd like to be able to type in this value instead of relying on finger pressure.

    Yes; when you go to use the Crop command, there should be a little arrow pointing upward on the left hand side of the crop options. Tap it to specify an exact width, height, or X and Y coordinates.
    (This tip can apply to other tools as well, like the Transform command (5th icon from the upper right). Be on the lookout for the same arrow icon when using the other tools.)

  • Right click top bar to open Image Size/Canvas Size/Info?

    I've just upgraded from PS 5 to PS CC. In previous versions I was able to just right click on the top image bar to bring up a dialog box allowing me to access the Image Size, Canvas Size, Image Info, etc... That does not seem to be the case with PS CC, or am I missing a prefence setting that will allow this?
    Thanks!

    I tried your suggestion but still cannot access that info by right-clicking the bar. I've gone through my preference settings, primarily under the Interface section and enabled and disabled several options but still no luck. It's just habit from many years use and nice to be able to access several common settings I might adjust.
    The keyboard shortcuts are fine also, but again habit and if my hand is already on the mouse it's just...or was just a simple click. (Me being lazy)
    Thanks for the help and suggestions. If anyone else a suggestion, great!

  • Can't  specify canvas size?!!

    using CS3 on iMac 10.5.4. creating a new doc. specify canvas size 6.302 inches x 4.56. when i check on the canvas size from within the doc it has become 6.303. I change it back to 6.302. click OK. go back into canvas size to check and it's back to 6.303! please help!

    Lisa,
    >i still don't understand this conceptually
    Here's another way to look at it. Pixels ("picture elements") are the smallest unit of a Photoshop image. Magnify any Photoshop image, and you will see a colorful checkerboard of colors. Each of those color squares is one pixel.
    So, getting back to your question, let's say that you're setting square tiles on a bathroom floor. And your tiles, like pixels, are fixed size and butt up against each other like a checkerboard. Now when you finally reach a wall with those tiles, they may fit exactly, or you may have to use a tile cutter to get the last row, closest to the wall, to fit.
    But with pixels, Photoshop doesn't supply a tile cutter, so you may have a minor image size adjustment to get them to fit properly. If you need the tile cutter, you place your image in another application (as I mentioned earlier) in an exactly sized box which can mask the unwanted portion of the last row of pixels.
    Hope that helps.
    Neil

  • Is anyone else having trouble using pixels for the canvas size instead of in's in the trial version?

    I go to image and then image size and everytime i go to change the canvas size to inches it will not work. Is it becasue the it's the trial version?

    oh ok I found out the resample but it still doesn't allow me to adjust the canvas size to pixels. The option is still in inches and it is impossible to crop quickly with it in inches

  • Why FlowLayout - JPane will NOT auto adjust in size?

    Hello java friends,
    I don't understand why my little demo program's JPane(use FlowLayout manager) will not adjust the size correctly. When run, I see one row of buttons, which only show 11 of them; the rest are shown on secon row which only visible if I go resize the window. Why is that? Wouldn't FlowLayout manager will auto size the pane? My main frame used the pack() method, so it's up to the pane's preferredsize. Please give me some ideas. Thanks.

    import java.awt.event.*;

        public static void main(String[] args) {
             JFrame mainFrame =new JFrame("Template");
            mainFrame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            mainFrame.setContentPane(new TemplatePane());
            //Display the window.
            mainFrame.pack();
            mainFrame.setVisible(true);
    class TemplatePane extends JPanel
              implements ActionListener {
         JButton componentAry[] =new JButton[100];
         TemplatePane() {
              this.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
              for(int i=0; i<componentAry.length; i++) {
                   componentAry[i] =new JButton("Test#"+i);
                   componentAry.addActionListener(this);
                   this.add(componentAry[i]);
         public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae) {
              System.out.println(ae.getActionCommand());

    I did read the API doc:
    >>>>
    A flow layout arranges components in a left-to-right flow, much like lines of text in a paragraph. Flow layouts are typically used to arrange buttons in a panel. It will arrange buttons left to right until no more buttons fit on the same line. Each line is centered.
    >>>>
    My question is why won't it adjust the pane size if the there is more than one line? It did draw the second line for things that won't fit in the first line... just not visible unless the whole window is resized to a bigger view. Can you please provide an explanation?

  • A script to increase the minimum canvas size? (Like Fit Image, but with just my canvas)

    For starters to be clear, I'm looking to manipulate canvas size. Not image size.
    I want to create a script to automatically increase the width and height of my canvas in Photoshop to a specific size when necessary. I only want this to happen if my canvas is less than that specified size. For example: Let's say my canvas size is 300x250. I want the canvas to be at LEAST 600x600. If I run my action it will increase the canvas size to 600x600 for me. If I run this same script on an image where the canvas size is already 700x700, it won't do anything at all to it because both the width and height are equal to or greater than my target size.
    It would also need to work with the height and width on an individual basis. If my image is 400x800, the action would increase my width from 400 to 600, but it would leave the height of 800 alone. So the final canvas size will end up being 600x800.
    It's kind of like the "Fit Image" option in Photoshop, but I only want to manipulate my canvas size, NOT my image size.

    It is possible.
    But if you hope that the dialog remembers the last settings that would require storing those values (which could be done with a txt-file at some pre-defined location), but it would make the Script a bit more complicated.
    // resize canvas in either direction if it is below a defined minimum;
    // 2011; use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
    // dialog;
    var dlg = new Window("dialog", "increase width and height if under", [500,300,750,380]);
    // filter for checking if entry is numeric, thanks to xbytor;
    numberKeystrokeFilter = function() {
              if (this.text.match(/[^\-\.\d]/)) {
                        this.text = this.text.replace(/[^\d]/g, "")
              if (Number(this.text <= 0)) {this.text = 5};
              this.text = Math.round(Number(this.text));
    // fields for entry;
    dlg.hor = dlg.add("edittext", [14,15,88,35], "600", {multiline:false});
    dlg.hor.onChange = numberKeystrokeFilter;
    dlg.horText = dlg.add("statictext", [93,15,118,35], "px", {multiline:false});
    dlg.ver = dlg.add("edittext", [129,15,210,35], "600", {multiline:false});
    dlg.ver.onChange = numberKeystrokeFilter;
    dlg.verText = dlg.add("statictext", [215,15,240,35], "px", {multiline:false});
    dlg.hor.active = true;
    // ok- and cancel-button;
    dlg.buildBtn = dlg.add("button", [13,45,118,68], "OK", {name:"ok"});
    dlg.cancelBtn = dlg.add("button", [128,45,240,68], "Cancel", {name:"cancel"});
    // show dialog;
    dlg.center();
    // show dialog;
    var myReturn = dlg.show ();
    // proceed if ok-ed;
    if (myReturn == 1) {
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    // set to pixels;
    var originalRulerUnits = app.preferences.rulerUnits;
    app.preferences.rulerUnits = Units.PIXELS;
    // set the minimum values;
    var minWidth = Number(dlg.hor.text);
    var minHeight = Number(dlg.ver.text);
    // get current ones;
    var theWidth = myDocument.width;
    var theHeight = myDocument.height;
    // resize canvas;
    myDocument.resizeCanvas(Math.max(minWidth, theWidth), Math.max(minHeight, theHeight), AnchorPosition.MIDDLECENTER);
    // reset;
    app.preferences.rulerUnits = originalRulerUnits;

  • How can I adjust text size in ibooks dictionary?

    How can I adjust text size in ibooks dictionary?

    Hello Eoradec2012,
    It sounds like you are using the Define function in iBooks and you are wanting to increase the size of the font on the page showing the definition. The size of that text can be controlled in the Text Size section:
    To adjust the font size, follow these steps:
    Go to Settings > General > Text Size.
    Drag the slider to the preferred size. The text on the screen will adjust as you move the slider.

  • How do I adjust the size of program fonts to accommodate low vision users?

    Is it possible to adjust the size of program text to accommodate low vision users, like an enlarge text button or CTRL + zoom text function like in my browser?
    I know I am not the first person to approach this issue.  Since PSE 5 the text sizes have been getting smaller each version and even harder to read, and now that screens are much larger, it makes the menu text even smaller. I predict that by v. 20, users will have to just memorize where to put their cursor to click on a menu item.
    I have already adjusted my system text sizes to 175% but it does no good for PSE, if I use the zoom entire screen, I can only view 1/4 of the workspace at a time. There really should be an easy way to personalize your workspace. I have to reduce my screen resolution to 800x600 and change back to 1920x1080 to view the item in it's intended location each time I edit or create images and cannot work on the document that I am creating or editing a graphic at the same time.  What a huge inconvenience.
    I have resorted to keeping my binoculars next to my computer for just this reason.  Picture it... binoculars to select anything on a menu.  In a way I feel like a prisoner.  Who are the quality control people, anyone that suffers with low vision? The last major problem I had to live with, PSE 10's gray on black! Find the scroll button when your eyes are tired! LOL.
    There are major reasons why I stick to PSE too, so changing programs is not a viable option for me.

    I am assuming that you are on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
    Not sure if there is another way, but the way that works for me
    a. right click the computer taskbar, and click on Cascade Windows
    b. in the Premiere Elements Expert workspace, go the the bottom right edge of the workspace view, place the mouse cursor at that point until its tip has a diagonal icon, and then drag upward right to left diagonally to give some view of the desktop where I have the file for the drag and drop into Premiere Elements....then drag and drop the supported file into the Timeline or Project Assets or a drag and drop location.
    Please let us know if that worked for you.
    Thank you.

    Microsoft store will provide a download manager (.exe) using your Product Key, which needs to be run on a PC. This manager will then let you download an ISO image to a USB and/or DVD.

  • Adobe Photoshop cs4-What Does Canvas Size Really Mean?

    What are we actually looking at when we place a picture on a canvas?
    For example, if I have a canvas of a width of 800 and a height of 1500 it appears on the screen to my eyes to be about 3 inches by 7 inches.
    Then let's say I add the headline: Risk takers of all kinds think the same.
    This headline will possibly take three rows to complete itself.
    But then I can make the same canvas fit the screen.
    Now the entire headline will fit on one row.
    What confuses me is which image of the canvas is a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get" in terms of how it will actually look on my webpage?
    In other words I guess my real question is how do I start with a canvas size that actually reflects my webpage or a defineable portion of it.
    Thank You,
    Jerry

    You'll have to forgive me but at times I'm not really sure what I'm talking about or doing.
    But an image or other content is built on layer canvas' I think?
    It gets all confusing because you may or may not fill a canvas with an image?
    Assuming you do fill a canvas with an image then I think the pixel dimensions and resolution will be directly tied to the canvas size?
    But I don't think any of that is my real point.
    I'll try to speak to my confusion using words other than those I first used.
    For example let's say you are making a squeeze page for your website.
    So you start with a headline that reads as follows: INTERNET MARKETER STICKS TO HIS GUM!
    Let's say those words are in large print.
    On my computer and I am using a small screen, if I create a canvas of a width =800 and height=1500 it occupies a space of
    of about 3" by 7".
    Now (and this part is now becoming like what I wrote above) those six words in large letters will occupy three to four rows on my computer.
    So in my mind I am thinking that when I eventually publish that page that the headline should occupy four lines. Make sense?
    But if I click the "fit to screen" Photoshop button, the canvas becomes larger on my screen and the entire headline will now fit on a "single" line.
    So now in my mind I am thinking that when I eventually publish that page that the headline should occupy one line.  See my problem?
    I guess my point is am I looking at WYSIWYG in the first, second or neither case?
    In other words what is the meaning of what I see when I look at a canvas?
    Thank you for your help.
    Here's one more attempt.
    Let's say you spend 12 hours designing a canvas in Photoshop that you thought would properly fill your webpage, and then you discover to your dismay that instead of your headline fitting properly only 37% of it does.  This would make you very unhappy and perhaps others.
    So what I'm trying to understand as a beginner is how does what I see on a canvas in Photoshop cs4 relate to a webpage.

  • Change canvas size in Final Cut Express?

    I completed an animation in FCE before I realized that I did something foolish: My animation frames are shot in HD (1920x1080), but I failed to set my canvas size, which is NTSC. Now, when I export my animation, the video size is distorted.
    Is there a way to change the canvas size of a movie so that it applies to existing sequences? Or, can a sequence's dimensions be changed? And, if not, can anyone recommend a workaround? I'm dealing with several thousand individual animation frames, so starting from scratch isn't an option for me.

    You can't. FCE is a fixed resolution editing application, either DV or HD at 1080 or 720.
