Adjusting for Backlighting

I'm combining footage from a party that was shot by two people using two different cameras. One individual did a terrible job of taking into consideration indoor backlighting. For instance one relatively long sequence has the quests of honor standing next to each other about two feet apart. Directly behind and between them is a lamp. So...the lamp is bright - faces dark. During a toast, the speaker is standing in front of a patio door. Nice exposure of the yard outside, crummy exposure of the speaker.
So the questions is...as a newbie with FCE, is there a way for me to adjust the exposure in these scenes. Please don't assume too much. I'm learning.
Thanks.

You can try this, it should make some improvement depending on how blown out the whites are:
Place the Playhead over a dodgy clip in the Timeline.
Double click the clip in question in the Timeline and it opens in the Viewer. You should see two identical views in the Viewer and Timeline. Note the Viewer has dots in the Scrubber Bar indicating a clip from the Timeline and not the Browser.
Drag the Viewer clip onto the Superimpose Canvas Overlay. The Timeline should have two exact clips stacked one on top of the other. If you don't want the audio stacked, disconnect the the audio Patch Panels by clicking on them.
Important: Double click the newly added Timeline clip and it opens in the Viewer.
Go to Effects>Image Control>Gamma Correction and drag this filter onto the Viewer. Click the Filters Tab in the Viewer to reveal the Gamma controls. Move as required to lift the dark areas.
Next, enable the opacity overlays if they are already switched on. Do this by clicking on the ZigZag shaped button at the bottom left of the Timeline. Go the the upper clip in the Timeline with the added filter and drag this opacity overlay line down. What you are doing is reducing the opacity of the upper clip to allow the lower clip to be revealed.
You will need to find the _sweet spot_ between how much the Gamma is raised and how much to lower the opacity to make both clips look best working together as one.

  • Bridge CS6 How to turn off auto tone adjustment for the loupe?

Adobe Bridge CS6. 'Apply auto tone adjustments' is unchecked in Camera Raw Preferences. Yet every time I click on an image in the preview panel it does a tonal adjustment before it magnifies the image detail. I am viewing bracketed images and do not want any auto tone applied at any time while previewing images. How can I turn off all auto tone adjustment for the program - including the loupe. I never had this issue in a previous version. I'm on PC. Thanks for any help!

All 4 Default Image Settings are unchecked. Checking this further I have found this is only a visual issue in Bridge Preview. I have opened the same raw file before any adjustment had taken place (w/o using the loupe magnifier) in PS CS6 - and then again opened it after using the magnifier which did an auto contrast adjust on the image. Both files are the same in PS CS6. This is only a visual issue within Bridge (Master Collection CS6) on my Win7 64 bit machine. No issue with a standalone PS CS6 version on my XP 64 bit system.
There is no auto adjustment of the image until I use the loupe (magnifier tool).
Note my previous comment as to what happens when I use it. Thanks!
I have a feeling this is a bug. I have a Photography help group on fb and posed this question to them. I had mostly no issue responses but got this from another person. I checked after reading this and it is the same issue with me - this only happens with raw files, not jpeg. Here is his comment line.
Carl, I see what you mean, I have tried several adjustments to the preferences and none seem to work. The image automatically adjusts after a brief time. There does not seem to be any way to turn off the adjustment. I'm using Bridge CS 6 on a Mac. I don't think it has anything to do with camera calibration, but it only happens when using RAW files. I tried it on JPGs and TIFFs and it did not adjust the loupe image. Wonder what Adobe has to say
So - tThanks for any thoughts! So at least it's not going to be an editing issue - but it's a pain here. I use Bridge to edit my shoots and I often shoot bracketed images. While I cull images according to the histogram, I also do visual assessment and I can't have Bridge doing it's own thing on tonal adjustment.

  • No volume adjustment for video clips

    Hi there!
I have noticed that the volume adjustment for video clips, set in the options pane of the clip itself, will not be respected by iTunes while playing the video.
Is there someone else with a similar issue or already with a solution?
    Thanks in advance!

I've tested all versions since 10.0.1 (for PC) and none work. Versions 10.0.1 and below will allow you to change the volume adjustmant and the equalizer setting for individual videos. No answer from apple!  You can try an older version like I did.

  • Why is there a limit on the number of times a "DVD player region" can be changed, and can it be adjusted for more region changes, or an indefinite number of region changes?

Why is there a limit on the number of times a "DVD player region" can be changed, and can this numbert be adjusted for more region changes, or an indefinite number of region changes?

Region encoding is the mechanism that enables motion picture studios to control the worldwide release of their movies. It is required by the DVD Forum (http://www.dvdforum.org/forum.shtml) in all commercial hardware DVD players. Every DVD-Video disc contains one byte of data representing a region code, which limits where the disc can be played.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Once you have set the region in DVD Player five times it cannot be changed.
Instead, use VLC to view videos from different regions:

  • Adjust for Brightness Corrections the Camera made

I have some video clips where I am trying to make two types of corrections.
I am using Warp Stabilize to correct for movement in the way I handled the camera during the filming process.  Warp Stabilize seems to do a fair job of fixing this, I can accept this for now.
Then I am trying to repair/ adjust where the camera made some auto brightness corrections when the focus was made/moved to a darker object in the scene.  It causes intermittent bright and dark lighting in the clip.
I realize both of these situations are my own fault, but I am still trying to learn how to adjust for them.
I tried using the Effect /Color Correction / Brightness and Contrast tool because this seems logical, but the results are not  smooth.  I set a key-frame on both sides of the problem point on the clip so I can stop/ lock in the effect from making changes to an area  that is good/ acceptable.  Then I move to the center point between the two key-frames I am holding as correct and make a brightness adjustment (creating a new key-frame).  This sounds like it should compensate, but I end up with even more intermittent flashes of bright and dark.
Can anyone tell me if this logic is correct and is this the correct tool I should be using to make this sort of adjustment to a clip   The adjustments are not  smooth as I would expect from key-frame.  And it appears the key-frames I set to hold what is correct are being auto adjusted.
I think there should be a metering tool  that I could use to measure/meter Brightness (ie; 1-100) throughout the clip so when I see the brightness is  varying away form my desire meter reading I could make an adjustment at that point where brightness varies to bring it back to the metered level I want to hold
Thanks for your help in advance

I've never used the Brightness/ Contrast adjustment. Curves and Levels work much better. Beyond that - if the aperture change is immediate, then split the clip on the respective point and correct each segment separately. otherwise it seems you do not quite understand how AE keyframes work. You don't "encircle" a problem, you just animate the respective parameters. In your example the only keyframe that actually holds anything useful is the one in the middle, the other two hold neutral default values. It's inevitable that you get additional brightness jumps because you are telling AE to revert to those defaults on the third keyframe, but the exposure is still wrong. Simply makes no sense. The rule of thumb is always to use as few keys as possible, especially on something as tricky as color corrections.

  • How to do Price Adjustment for PO issued?

    Dear experts,
My user has already issued one PO with the unit price of $770 and also issued the GRPO under the price of $770. After that, the vendor said the actual unit price is $1000. How to do the price adjustment for the wrong unit price issued in the PO?
    Kindly share with me. Thanks.
    Regards,
    Xavier

    hi xavier,
    GRPO - Goods Return
    A/P Invoice - Credit Memo
previously you didn't mention A/P Invoice was already made. if A/P invoice is already made you need A/P Credit Memo to reverse it.
now, since adjustment is already done, is $230 is added to the same A/P Invoice and added to cost (qty * $230) that was base to GRPO? if yes, then your item cost is already corrected in A/P Invoice and also your Payable to your Vendor.
However if the adjustment is done, in other document like JE adjustment then you need to Credit Memo, then GRPO (Not base on PO) with $1000 price then A/P Invoice base on GRPO.
    regards,
    Fidel

  • ColdFusion did not adjust for Daylight Savings Time change

Both my 8 and 11 machines did not adjust for DST over the weekend. The computer times look ok, but CF times are still an hour behind. We've restarted the server, which did not fix the problem. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Do you have ALL CF Server updates/hotfixes applied?  I don't _know_ that any CF updates included the new rules for DST changing; but that's the first thing I'd check, if it were my system.
What web server are you using?  Built-in, Apache, IIS?  Could there be a setting in there that might affect the DST difference?
Just off the top of my head.

  • Calender adjusts for timezones when it shouldn't

Is there a way to configure the calender so that it doesn't adjust for timezones? To clarify if you enter and event in another timezone it will shift the time when you arrive in that timezone, for example if you enter a 7:30 event in Chicago when you are in Boston the Pre will display it as 6:30 when you arrive in Chicago. Calender events are always specified as an absolute time, they should never be adjusted for timezones.

  • Is there any optimal adjustment for Edge Sharpening?

When I mostly worked with PS I used an adjustment for sharpening portraits and another one for landscapes.
I wonder if someone could tell me a general good value for ·Edge Sharpening" with these two options working with Aperture.
    Best regards.
iMac Intel Duo 2 Core Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I've saved several settings from which I select:
    (weak) 50/33/66, 50/33/99, 50/50/99, 50/66/99 and 66/66/99 (strong).
Generally, on high ISO shots, I use weaker sharpening than on low ISO shots. Portraits also usually want less sharpening than, say, landscapes.
Otherwise I have no real rule of thumb. Depends on the image. I play with the sliders (which work quite well these days on my old G4 powerbook, as long as I don't have shadows / highlights enabled - thanks for that, Joe and team!) until I'm happy in this order: first the top slider, then the second one, and finally the third one.
    Cheers,
    Karl

  • Petition: Creative to change it so we can put a specific time for backlight on micro to go on/

CREATIVE TO CHANGE IT SO WE CAN PUT A SPECIFIC TIME FOR BACKLIGHT ON MICRO TO GO ON/OFF. Wouldn't it be nice during the daytime to save battery and have the backlight off, and then during the night have the backlight on, WITHOUT going to settings every single time to change it. Or in the menu creative could add a backlight shortcut, so when pressed the backlight will go on/off. PLEASE SIGN AND LEAVE YOUR OPINION... Thank you

In the interest of preseving battery life - my backlight is on permanent off (unless I specifically need it, say on a red-eye flight and its way dark in the plane), so this isn't so much of an issue to me.
What I would like to see, again as a power-saving thing, is an option to turn off the display altogether. For example, set the unit so after so much time (30 sec) the entire display turns off, and then comes back on when you hit the touchpad.

  • Adjust for daylight time saving different for just one user

I justed started a new job and I am introduced in a new Windows Terminal Server environment. We use Windows 2003 Server, Exchange 2003, a Sun Fire V210 server and SunRay 270 TC's. The SUN part is totally new for me, so forgive me ;-)
We have one user that has an Outlook (2003) problem. She saw that after the 28th of March, when the summertime here in the Netherlands is active, her appointments are shifted for an hour. I checked as a Windows administrator the Windows TS she is working on and it has the correct TZ(GMT+1, Amsterdam) and the option for Adjust Daylight Time Saving is enabled.
Then I checked with her in Outlook, whether this setting is reflected correctly. In Outlook I went to Tools, options, Calendar Options, Time Zone and the checkbox 'Adjust for Daylight Time Saving' is disabled! That is strange since this should be the setting of the server and as I already wrote, this is correct. Ofcourse therefor she can't enabled it here. I let her login with her id card on a different TC 270 client and the same problem there. Than I started on my laptop a remote desktop connection to the Windows TS and we checked again. The strange thing is, now the option is enabled and all her appointments are correct after the 28th of March.
We have checked with all the other users and nobody else has this problem. We have deleted her Windows profile totally but this didn't solve it.
Since it only happens when using TC's, I reckon the problem is with the Sun TC's or the SunRay Server.
Does anybody has a clue what this could be? The Sun Fire doesn't save user specific information, does it?
    Thanks in advance
    Kind regards,
    Olaf

Ok, now I am a bit confused. I saw the page http://wikis.sun.com/display/SRWC2dot2/Home and looking at that, it seems the SRWC software is Windows software, We have not installed any Windows software from SUN. So, also no SRWC software on Windows. I thought the SRWC was a software component on the SunRay server?
Maybe I did not explain the problem correctly, but the we have several thin clients, SunRay 270's. They are connected to the Sunray Server, Sun Fire v210. This server redirects them to our Windows Terminal Server. We use Exchange Server 2003 on our Windows 2003 Servers.
We have one user with the problem. She puts in her ID card in the TC, she is redirected to our WTS, she logs in in the Window login prompt. She starts Outlook and sees in there with Tools, Options, Calendar Options, Time Zone, that the Adjust Daylight Time Saving is disabled. Although this is on the WTS server enabled, system wide.
When she doesn't use a TC but starts a remote desktop connection from a Windows machine to the WTS, it works fine.
Again I apologise for my lack of knowledge on the SUN side of this.
    Olaf
