Adjusting Light

Hello all of you lovely Final Cut Pro's :O)
I shot some video in bright sunlight and I was wondering if there was a way to edit it to make it appear near dusk or even dark.
Thanks for reading this.

You can also composite a gradient over the video clip ... effectively creating a graduated neutral density filter with the option of colorizing as well to warm or cool the image. Or using the 3-Way Color Corrector's "Limit Effect" function, you can manipulate the bright areas as needed.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

  • Best way to adjust lighting in video clips

Is there a "best" way to adjust lighting conditions within a video clip?  I have a clip with terrible lighting conditions and cannot reshoot the scenario.
While I don't expect a perfect solution, I am hoping that there are better approaches than the ones I've been using.  If recommendations include third-party plugins, I would appreciate hearing about them, as well.
I have been using the gamma corrector and luma corrector filters.  The gamma corrector adjustments in greater values, but seems to only work in discrete steps.  So, if the gamma needs to be stepped up or down within a clip, there is a very visible and sometimes jarring visual effect.  The luma corrector seems to only be able to increase the brightness level (through a combination of all 5 or 6 variables including brightness, gain, gamma, etc.) before the clip looks washed out.
    Thanks,
    Steve

All CC and Grading should start with "Levels"
You could then go into 3-Way Color Correction.
You could also look at a more powerful CC such as Colorista 2

  • Best Practices - How to adjust light in selected areas and best options for export (only adjust ligh

    Hello,
I have the cs suite, and recently downloaded the lightroom demo. I am fairly good with picking up programs but couldn't locate where or how i can select individual elements to lighten/darken? If i wanted to make a an object lighter, should i be doing this within ps or is there an easy to use tool within lightroom?
Second question, when exporting into ps, what is the best practice.. should i only adjust lighting and any other edits within ps?
    cheers
    Kenny from Vancouver

Take a look at the Adjustment Brush. It's in the tool pallette, just below the histogram when you're in the Develop Module. It will not only dodge and burn, but allow you to apply lots of other kinds of local changes.
In general, I find that I can do everything in Lightroom for most images.

  • Does Touch have "remove color cast" and adjust lighting - levels like Photoshop Elements?

Does Touch have "remove color cast" and adjust lighting -> levels like Photoshop Elements?

There isn't a "remove color cast" command per se but there are Levels and Curves adjustments so you can effectively remove/diminish colors yourself.

  • Elements 11, Vista Home Premium, Expert Edit Enhance/Adjust Lighting

I have a Vista Home Premium and Elements 11.  When using Expert Edit Enhance to Adjust Lighting, the edit "tool" box covers a large part of the image.  I can't figure out how to move the box out of the way so I can see the image being edited.  (Everyone in the world probably knows how to do this but me.)  Anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks,
    Norm.

There are several adjustments under the Adjust Lighting and if your talking about the dialog that opens with say Levels you should be able
to left click on the top part of the dialog and drag the dialog.

  • Adjust Lighting issue - program freezes

I'm using Elements 9 and I've never had any problems with it until today. When I tried to use the Adjust Shadows feature under Adjust Lighting, the program became unresponsive. It wouldn't allow me to do anything at all. I had to exit the program using the Task Manager. I tried two more times to see if I was doing something wrong, but I followed the same process I've been using for years and each time the program would freeze.
What's gone wrong? And more importantly, how can I fix it?

Quit the editor and restart it while holding ctrl+alt+shift. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

  • Can't get widget to appear to adjust lights in lighting effects

have PS cc and when I use Lighting effects a lighting effects window pops up but it won't show me light handles or a widget to move the lights around. i can switch lights to adjust their properties but can't move the lights around my image, So it is of little or no use without that functionality.
Can any one help me solve this problem? .....................  Windows 7os, nvidia geforce 650 with latest drivers updated.

Try disabling the OpenGL support in Preferneces > Performance. You'll need to reopen the image for this change to go into effect.

  • Adjusting lightness of images

What is the best way to adjust image lightness in FCE 2?
    a) To make an image lighter I can choose between the filters for a) lightness and b) gamma. Which one should I use i.e. which one results in less noise in the adjusted video (at least if I want to increase lightness)?
    b) In case I choose gamma, how should I do the adjustment. I have adjusted thousands of images in the "curves" of Photoshop, but the settings of the FCE gamma filter don´t look clear to me. Should I just change the gamma setting or also the input and/or output settings? First I tried changing just the output setting but with little effect. So finally I ended up changing the gamma value (I suppose I was then changing the gamma curve)... That offered a quick help, - I think also the contrast was changed as a by-product but that was not a problem.
    c) In case I want a darker image, I can also drag down the image rubber band in the timeline. What about this method in comparison to the two others?
All this is everyday work for a pro editor - how would you pros do this?

Thanks for a clear answer. And sorry for confusing some people by saying that I have used "curves" in Photoshop thousands of times. You can of course use curves too, but actually I meant to say that I have used "levels" in Photoshop regularly.
In relation to that I could continue the discussion by asking why that same tool is not included in FC? When a pro photogpraher starts working on a still image in Photoshop he normally goes to levels and sets the white and black points and after that uses the slider to set the overall lightness of the image. Or are you guys setting also the white and black points every now and then in FC? Would you do that by using the color controller?

  • Elements 3 to Elements 10 radical difference in "Adjust Lighting"

I've just upgraded from Photoshop Elements 3 to Photoshop Elements 10 and I'm finding the degree to which "Brightness/Contrast" in the "Adjust Ligthing"
menu can alter an original image is radically different in its effect on the degree of whiteness I can obtain.   The same setting adjustment, such as a 44 for brightness and a 55 for contrast results in a radically darker white background with 10 as with 3 given the same starting point.  The starting ;point is an image of a line drawing on a pure white drawing paper.   The image is taken with a Nikon D200 camera and the background tends to be blueish version of the original drawing paper.   With 3, the settings mentioned above will render the bluish color a pure white as seen by the naked eye.  With 10, the same settings render the bluish color lighter but still clearly darker than white.   Higher settings using 10, such as 80 brightness and 90 contrast, do not achieve the pure white effect as with 3.   If, with 10, I go above 80/90, the non-white colors of the drawing get washed out so they are unacceptable.
QUESTION: Has anyone experienced this difference between Elements 3 and Elements 10?    If so, what can be done to get back to the brightness/contrast controls of Elements 3?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Thx.
    Bob G.

That change came about i think starting with pse6/photoshop cs3. in photoshop you have two choices in the Brightness/Contrast dialog:
Use Legacy or not to use Legacy.

You can use levels to get the same results as you did using the bright/ness contrast in pse 3.

  • Adjusting lightness/darkness in QT X?

Just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard and I notice the QT player no longer has controls for adjusting darkness, lightness, contrast, etc. Does anyone know if this feature was removed? And why??!

Does anyone know if this feature was removed?
Those features are not at this time part of QuickTime X Player. Use QuickTime 7 Player which is probably in your Utilities folder. If it's not, you can install it via the Optional Installs on your Snow Leopard installation disk.

    Hi,
In the Multisim component database go to the Misc Group and select Misc_virtual Family, you should find a generic optocoupler.  The input is voltage and it suppose to represent light.  I googled "Photodiode SPICE" and I found a model for you, agian the apply voltage to the P pin represent light.  With this model you should be able to create your own component and if you don't know how this is done, please refer to the following online tutorial:

  • How do I adjust the white balance in Elements?

How do I adjust the white balance in Elemements ?

Here is a way to obtain a salutary result in a less sophisticated way:
    Open picture file
    Go to Enhance>adjust lighting>levels
Point to the white eyedropper (see red arrow) and click on a white object

This picture is grossly underexposed. I clicked on the white shirt of one of the players resulting in instant improvement.

  • Tiny Levels Adjustment Panel histogram.

The histogram, in the Layers Adjustments Panel in E9, is now only 166 pixels wide.  Since there are 256 levels in an 8 bit image about 1/3 of the levels are not shown.  In addition to the histogram being incomplete the adjustment sliders are now more difficult to use as they too are reduced in length.
To rub it in, the full extent of this anomaly only applies to the Levels Panel accessed as an adjustment layer.  Clicking on Enhance>Adjust Lighting>Levels… brings up something like the old full size, 256 pixel wide panel. Well it nearly brings up a full 256 pixel wide histogram except for the fact that a new, since E7,  border round the histogram now occupies the 0 and 255 levels leaving only 254 levels displayed not 256.
Why two different tools for the same job?
    Why are both now incomplete?
    Why change something that worked?
The image above shows a histogram as displayed in the Histogram Panel and the histogram of the same image as displayed in a Levels Adjustment Panel.    A slight change of zoom has introduced some distortion but the wide gaps in the left hand image are as seen in the original.

That's a good idea in retrospect I did put it in the wrong place.  I really just want to sound off about E9s "new" features.
I recently gave a talk to my local Camera Club Digital Group on the new features in the Elements 9's editor.   In preparing the talk I came across irritating new features and changes that I normally put up with but were becoming a pain as I reworked examples.  In the end I had a much longer list of irritating new features than the list of new editing features that Photoshop proudly advertise.  It just seems to me that there is an unreasonable number of careless programming errors, if not errors then irrational decisions, that were not features of earlier versions of Elements.
After using Es 2,3,4,5,6 and 7 I just feel that E9 was a rip off Layer Masks or no Layer Masks.
