Adjusting lightness of images

What is the best way to adjust image lightness in FCE 2?
a) To make an image lighter I can choose between the filters for a) lightness and b) gamma. Which one should I use i.e. which one results in less noise in the adjusted video (at least if I want to increase lightness)?
b) In case I choose gamma, how should I do the adjustment. I have adjusted thousands of images in the "curves" of Photoshop, but the settings of the FCE gamma filter don´t look clear to me. Should I just change the gamma setting or also the input and/or output settings? First I tried changing just the output setting but with little effect. So finally I ended up changing the gamma value (I suppose I was then changing the gamma curve)... That offered a quick help, - I think also the contrast was changed as a by-product but that was not a problem.
c) In case I want a darker image, I can also drag down the image rubber band in the timeline. What about this method in comparison to the two others?
All this is everyday work for a pro editor - how would you pros do this?

Thanks for a clear answer. And sorry for confusing some people by saying that I have used "curves" in Photoshop thousands of times. You can of course use curves too, but actually I meant to say that I have used "levels" in Photoshop regularly.
In relation to that I could continue the discussion by asking why that same tool is not included in FC? When a pro photogpraher starts working on a still image in Photoshop he normally goes to levels and sets the white and black points and after that uses the slider to set the overall lightness of the image. Or are you guys setting also the white and black points every now and then in FC? Would you do that by using the color controller?

  • Best Practices - How to adjust light in selected areas and best options for export (only adjust ligh

    Hello,
I have the cs suite, and recently downloaded the lightroom demo. I am fairly good with picking up programs but couldn't locate where or how i can select individual elements to lighten/darken? If i wanted to make a an object lighter, should i be doing this within ps or is there an easy to use tool within lightroom?
Second question, when exporting into ps, what is the best practice.. should i only adjust lighting and any other edits within ps?
    cheers

Take a look at the Adjustment Brush. It's in the tool pallette, just below the histogram when you're in the Develop Module. It will not only dodge and burn, but allow you to apply lots of other kinds of local changes.
In general, I find that I can do everything in Lightroom for most images.

  • How to remove an adjustment from multiple images

Hi, i've used the lift and stamp method to apply a black and white preset to a group of images. I want to remove this adjustment from the same group of images but the only way i can see how to do it is to unclick the Black and White adjustment brick for each image individually. Is there a way to do this for a group of images?

You are absolutely right. My apologies.
What follows is what I found out this morning, just by poking around. I am not a programmer nor a program designer -- my apologies in advance for anything wrong or clumsily understood.
I believe you have stumbled across a significant design flaw in Aperture. Resetting an adjustment brick effectively removes it for some bricks, and does not for others ^1^. There is no way I know of to batch remove (or turn on/off (i.e.: check or uncheck)) adjustment bricks. There should be.
The [User Manual|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter =16%26section=9%26hash=apple_ref:doc:uid:Aperture-UserManual-91292AOV-1009540] is simply wrong about this. On the "Removing Adjustments" page it states:
To remove a single adjustment from an image
Select an image, then click the Reset button for the adjustment you want to remove.
This does not work for those adjustments which default to having an effect, such as the "Black & White" brick under discussion, "Vignette" and others.
It seems to me there should be clear distinctions between (and controls for) both the "on/off" status of an adjustment brick, and the "default/not-default" settings of the parameters within the brick.
Perhaps others can join in with further comments and provide some more light on this. As it is, I recommend sending feedback on this to the Aperture team, via the program. Use "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".
^1^ There are two kinds (at least) of adjustments in Aperture: those with a "null" default and those with a "non-null" default. Null-default adjustments can be "zeroed out" -- the adjustment can be applied and have no effect. Non-null-default adjustments cannot be zeroed out -- the only way to have no effect is to turn the adjustment off (uncheck it) or remove it. There are, to the best of my knowledge, no ways to batch turn off or remove adjustments (I don't use AppleScript, but I checked the manual).

  • Elements 11, Vista Home Premium, Expert Edit Enhance/Adjust Lighting

I have a Vista Home Premium and Elements 11.  When using Expert Edit Enhance to Adjust Lighting, the edit "tool" box covers a large part of the image.  I can't figure out how to move the box out of the way so I can see the image being edited.  (Everyone in the world probably knows how to do this but me.)  Anyone else have this problem?
    Thanks,
    Norm.

There are several adjustments under the Adjust Lighting and if your talking about the dialog that opens with say Levels you should be able
to left click on the top part of the dialog and drag the dialog.

In general theory, one now has the Edit button for their posts, until someone/anyone Replies to it. I've had Edit available for weeks, as opposed to the old forum's ~ 30 mins.
That, however, is in theory. I've posted, and immediately seen something that needed editing, only to find NO Replies, yet the Edit button is no longer available, only seconds later. Still, in that same thread, I'd have the Edit button from older posts, to which there had also been no Replies even after several days/weeks. Found one that had to be over a month old, and Edit was still there.
Do not know the why/how of this behavior. At first, I thought that maybe there WAS a Reply, that "ate" my Edit button, but had not Refreshed on my screen. Refresh still showed no Replies, just no Edit either. In those cases, I just Reply and mention the [Edit].
Also, it seems that the buttons get very scrambled at times, and Refresh does not always clear that up. I end up clicking where I "think" the right button should be and hope for the best. Seems that when the buttons do bunch up they can appear at random around the page, often three atop one another, and maybe one way the heck out in left-field.
While I'm on a role, it would be nice to be able to switch between Flattened and Threaded Views on the fly. Each has a use, and having to go to Options and then come back down to the thread is a very slow process. Jive is probably incapable of this, but I can dream.

I'm using Preview with a MacBook Pro and MacOS 10.6.8. When adjusting sharpness in the Adjust Colour tool, images are not saved. Any hint? Thanks.

I too experienced the same issue.  Here are my details:
Recently I bought a 15” Macbook Pro and last night I tried to connect and use a Edirol FA/66 Firewire 400 connected outboard audio interface using a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter then connected to a Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter since the MBP doesn’t have a native Firewire port.  What I observed is that the Edirol was not getting power from the bus nor did the MBP (running Yosemite) recognize the Edriol.  At first I thought there was a problem with the Edirol since I haven’t used it in a while but when I connected it to an older MBP that has a native Firewire port, it worked normally.  Is there a known issue with these sorts of external audio interfaces working properly with newer MBP running Yosemite?  I’m hoping that a software update will fix this issue.

  • Remove adjustment from multiple images?

I have multiple images where I used Sharpen instead of Edge Sharpen. I know I can Lift & Stamp the Edge Sharpen adjustment to multiple images but I can't seem to find a way to remove the Sharpen adjustment from all of them first. Is there a way to accomplish this? Thanks

I can add the other keyword using your techniqe, but how do I get rid of the wrong keyword without interfering with the other keywords I have already set for the images?
    Keywords are metadata, not adjustments.
If you want to add or remove keywords to multiple images, without interfering with the keywords that are already set, I'd suggest to configurekeyword sets and to use the keyword controls:
For example, after designing a keyword set"Himmel" (sky) I can add or remove one of the keywords for all selected images  by simply pressing a button in the keywords panel or using a key combination: for example ⌥6  to add the keyword "Halo" to all images, ⇧⌥6 to remove it from all currently selected images.
But the question is, how to remove one adjustment from multiple images, and that seems to be behaving buggy in Aperture 3.4.1, at least on my system: If I try to add an adjustment to (or remove from)  multiple images, only the primary selection will be modified - and yes "Primary only is disabled ).
For example: Trying to add "Sepia Tone" to four images: I see the same on two MBPs and on my iMac with Aperture 3.4.1.

  • Adjusting frame to image - linked images

hi, I have a bunch of images inserted in indesign, linked from an eps file. I have modified the images in illutrator and now updating links I have to modify the frames because the graphics are longer and they don't fit the image frame.
I can go one by one and do "adjust frame to image" but, is there a way to do this automatically for all the links? There are actually all linked to the same image... please help!
    thank you

    Hi John,
I have one image in each of 100 spreads, and it is not the only image in each spread. Is there a way to select them all? is it possible to do that from the links menu? they are all linked to the same image.
    thanks!

  • Best way to adjust lighting in video clips

Is there a "best" way to adjust lighting conditions within a video clip?  I have a clip with terrible lighting conditions and cannot reshoot the scenario.
While I don't expect a perfect solution, I am hoping that there are better approaches than the ones I've been using.  If recommendations include third-party plugins, I would appreciate hearing about them, as well.
I have been using the gamma corrector and luma corrector filters.  The gamma corrector adjustments in greater values, but seems to only work in discrete steps.  So, if the gamma needs to be stepped up or down within a clip, there is a very visible and sometimes jarring visual effect.  The luma corrector seems to only be able to increase the brightness level (through a combination of all 5 or 6 variables including brightness, gain, gamma, etc.) before the clip looks washed out.
    Thanks,
    Steve

All CC and Grading should start with "Levels"
You could then go into 3-Way Color Correction.
You could also look at a more powerful CC such as Colorista 2

  • Does Touch have "remove color cast" and adjust lighting - levels like Photoshop Elements?

Does Touch have "remove color cast" and adjust lighting -> levels like Photoshop Elements?

There isn't a "remove color cast" command per se but there are Levels and Curves adjustments so you can effectively remove/diminish colors yourself.

  • Automatic adjustements to RAW image?

    Hi,
I am fairly new to using Lightroom and I wondered if someone might be able to help....
I notice that when i import RAW images  into Lightroom and open them up, they immediately become dull, less vibrant and very different o the in-camera image. I have tried to find whether there is asetting which applied automatic adjustements to the image but have been unsuccessful.  This doesn't seem to happen when i use the Canon RAW processing software. Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

It might be that a preset is being applied to your photos during import.
Make sure that no auttone is applied. Go >Edit >Preferences >Presets tab and make sure that <Apply auto tone adjustments> is un-checked. See screen shot:
When you import images into Lr, on the right side in the Import Dialog under <Apply during Import> make sure that <None> is selected. See screen shot:
Irrespective of that, your image will look different than on your camera display.
It is sometimes assumed that the image on camera display must be the "correct" image. That is not so. The camera creates a tiny JPG for display that is not representative of the Raw image. Lr gives you a better rendition of your image.
If it looks flat and dull - that is not a flaw. Contrast and saturation or vibrancy can always and easily be adjusted. In fact, a flat looking image is easier to work with.
A "crispy" looking image seems "better" at first. But often the contrast and/or the saturation are too high and detail gets lost. This might not be visible on the screen but becomes apparent when the image is printed.
Aside from that: Lr can show you the image correctly only when your monitor is calibrated.

  • How is it possible to adjust the background images and the text in Mail?

How is it possible to adjust the background images and the text in Mail?

Here's the solution I used to solve the same problem. If you're not comfortable editing the source files, this might be more than you want to take on--but I've done it to several files with no ill effects. You can follow the instructions on this page and the referenced original post from (he includes a link on the page). Good luck! He's got some great tips on some of his other pages.
    http://photo.rwboyer.com/2010/03/15/aperture-3-book-theme-trick/
A warning about editing the Master pages--it only edits them in that book--it doesn't update the theme. So if you go to create another book with those same layouts, you'll have to duplicate the book and replace all the images. An alternative would be to create a "clean" book with no photos in it and then just use that as a starting point each time.

  • Copy adjustment to multiple images

Simple question, anyone figure out how to copy an adjustment from one image to a group of images.
I shoot in RAW so all my images need white balance applied to them, I set the one balance on one image,  and found Copy adjustment.  Now I want to copy this to the next 1000 pictures, all I can seem to do is do it one by one. Not good when you have a 1000 pictures to do.  I see no way to select multiple images when doing edits. And when not in "Edit" mode, the paste Adjustment does not work.
    Robert
P.S.  -- All I can say about Photos is *** was apple thinking putting out this POS application.  They had 2 good apps, a little long in the tooth, and in need of a major update.  But to get rid of those and give us Photos, I am ashamed for the software engineers that had to release this POS app.

Ya, can do that, but trying to do that for 1000 images, I would end up throwing the whole computer out the window.
It is a pity, that the lifting and stamping of adjustments has been implemented in this silly, restrictive way.
Why not implement it, as it is in Aperture - a nice Lift&Stamp tool, that lets us copy metadata, titles, captions, keywords, and selected groups of adjustments to all selected photos?
You may want to write a feature request to Apple instead of smashing your Mac.  The feedback form for Photos is here:  Apple - Photos - Feedback

  • Adjust Lighting issue - program freezes

I'm using Elements 9 and I've never had any problems with it until today. When I tried to use the Adjust Shadows feature under Adjust Lighting, the program became unresponsive. It wouldn't allow me to do anything at all. I had to exit the program using the Task Manager. I tried two more times to see if I was doing something wrong, but I followed the same process I've been using for years and each time the program would freeze.
What's gone wrong? And more importantly, how can I fix it?

Quit the editor and restart it while holding ctrl+alt+shift. Keep the keys down till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.
