Adjusting (ok... fiddling) the new Lion login screen

Is it possible to edit the new Lion Login screen beyond replacing the picture (/System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/Resources/NSTexturedFul lScreenBackgroundColor.png)?  Specifically, can you change the contrast/brightness of the background picture and more importantly add the hostname/machine name as we had with the original login screen (handy when setting up computer labs).  Does the machine administrator have access to an hidden program to handle this?

I guess I'll try turning off Vault

  • New Lion Login Screen, Auto Sleep?

I set up two user accounts on my Mac Mini 1.83GHZ Core 2 Duo, and each account is set to auto-log off after 10 minutes of inactivity.  This works as expected (phew!) so that when each user needs to use their account, the computer is ready for them at the new log in screen.  Since this Mac is hooked up to a 40" TV, I want to make sure that I dont screenburn my TV if I leave it on at the new login screen.  I waited for ten minutes and the mac didn't sleep at the new login screen, I know I have the option to Sleep it from there manually, but does anyone know if the new login screen was designed to autosleep?
    Thanks,
    Mr. Louis

I just went to the new Lion OS from Leopard OS, and when I'm on the internet, it locks up after about 5 or 10 minutes. WhY?

From Leopard or Snow Leopard? If the former then I suggest you erase the drive and reinstall Lion:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Be sure to run Software Update for any additional updates.

I have a mac book pro that i bought in late 2009. My current software is snow leopard version 10.5.8. I would like to get the new lion operating system but I cant without first getting the latest version of snow leopard. however when I go to update my software it doesnt show that any update is available.

    10.5.8 is Leopard, not Snow Leopard. You need the Snow Leopard DVD;
You can get it only by phone now from Apple.
In the US, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask for a sales assistant. Last quoted price was $19.99 for the single-user and $29.99 for the family licence.
For other countries, check here; http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
Don't forget to ask for Sales; the tech support guys can't help.
If you want Lion, rather than Mountain Lion, the same Sales team can give you a download code to use at the Mac AppStore.
To get the App Store, you need to update your new Snow Leopard from 10.6.3 (which is the version on the installer) to 10.6.8 with the combo update; http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be warned that the upgrades will render a lot of older software unusable, and will need new drivers for printers and scanners in all likelihood.

Hello guys..does anybody know how to install and use adobe master collection with the new lion?
I need to use Flash and illustratore, but apparently those programmes are incompatible with the new operative sistem...
I am a new mac users and I'd like to know if there are other similar programmes I can use with lion!

well dude I can only let you know that as I work with those programme I don't have to pay for it is my company that pays the programme I whant to use( that's why I was asking if there where other programmes ..that I could use with lion insted that Illustrator and Flash!)..I know Adobe since 2005 and I can say that Adobs products are very good...I think that if it's an Adobe probleme or fault ..they will solve it very soon...but unfortunally I have the impression that after Jobs passed away Appel decided to change politics..and everything started to go very bad! (see FCP X)..
    good luck with apple dude..
Where is the Apple problem? I have CS4 and CS5 running perfectly fine on my Macbook Pro. Installed 5 after Lion upgrade. Worth every cent. Adobe did have some catching up to do with Lion but with the CS5.5 update all runs fine. But not yours. So it is a problem with the Lion OS? You say you have been with Adobe since 2005. So you would be aware of all the other issues that Adobe had catching up with past Oss in Mac and Windows then. They get it right, but it is up to them. It is not up to Apple, nor Microsoft for that matter, to run around and check that every software developer in the world is running their business properly.
And what has politics got to do with anything. Some people just have to blame Software for their poor Hardware maintainence of failure of the same.
<The only think I can really do is to go back on my old windows...give back this orrible lap top and ask for my money back!>
Great suggestion. You should go with that one, but good luck getting a refund.
    Bye

  • Im using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to the new lion. Does it matter how i do it?

Im using Mac OS X 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to the new lion. Does it matter how i do it?

Does your computer meet the requirements:
    Lion System Requirements
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available space
Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Recommended process:
How to Install Lion Successfully - You must have Snow Leopard 10.6.7 or 10.6.8 Installed
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.3.) if DW cannot fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall Snow Leopard.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the backup volume. Source means the internal startup volume.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade to Lion:
Purchase the Lion Installer from the Mac App Store. The download will start quickly. Lion is nearly 4 GBs so a fast internet connection is essential. Download time could run upwards of 4 hours depending upon network conditions and server demands at the time.
Boot From The Lion Installer which is located in your Applications folder.
    Follow instructions for installation.

I've installed Lion over Snow Leopard and all my non Apple software is still here - you may want to check if your software will work with Lion and I would definately recommend having a bootable backup in case anything goes wrong

Ah, you didn't read the fine print on installing Lion, did you? None of your old software will run in Lion.
    You have two choices:
    A) Buy all new or updated software
    B) Partition the hard drive and install an older version of OSX to run your older apps.
You did not give us any idea of what PowerPC apps you were running, so additional options:
    C)  Restore to Snow Leopard
    D)  Install Snow Leopard (and Rosetta which runs PowerPC apps) in Parallels 7 in Lion:

  • If my mac runs on leopard os, and not te snow leopard os , does this mean i can't purchase the new lion os?

if my mac runs on the leopard OS and not the snow leopard os, does this mean i can't purchase the new lion os?

We probably don't know the whole story yet.
The big announcement Steve Jobs made was, of course, a sales pitch with all the "gee whiz" stuff -- no nitty-gritty, gory details.
Apple's "How to buy" post (http://www.apple.com/macosx/how-to-buy/) clearly says "To upgrade on day one" -- no mention of day two, or twenty.
It would be rather silly for Apple to take the position that, if you don't have broadband (for a 4 GB download), they don't want you as a customer.  So it's likely there will be an alternative for such folks, such as a DVD or USB stick, possibly for a nominal extra fee.  If so, that might also allow updating directly from Leopard.
When the actual release date is announced, there should be more details.
