Adjusting preferences in Preview for viewing pdfs

I would like to have the option to view the 1st page of my pdf next to the second page - not on its own (eg currently, for a 5 page document, mine only shows up as page 1, then p2+3, then P4+5. I would like it to show up at p1+2, then P3+4 then P5, etc. I know how to click between 1 page, and 2 pages and 2 pages continuous, but the 1st page is always on its own for all options.....I understand that in Adobe, you can set preferences for page set ups for viewing your pdf, which includes showig the 1st page with the next one:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Standard/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd6151097941 95ff-7faf.w.html
However, the instruction for Apple is not working for me. My computer uses Preview and I do not see these options set out. I found another forum where this problem was discussed, but it was archived before being resolved and I am unable to find the new trail....
Any help appreciated.

Hi,
In Preview's View Menu there is PDF display.
The Two Pages option places two pages side by side.
However I have found it is not consistent with different PDFs.
(I also set the Preferences to 50% for PDF display)
Example
It seems to works once you are past the first page (Although I do have a 2 page document where it does not work).

  • Adobe reader does not work, what is best for viewing pdfs?

While using Safari, I keep encountering a message that in order to view a .pdf, I need to download Adobe Reader, accept the end user agreement, then relaunch.  I have tried to do this many times and keep getting the above message. What program is best for viewing pdfs using Safari on an iMac

    Back up all data.
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, there should be a setting in its preferences such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected. Otherwise do as follows.
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it as well, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Firefox 17.0 for Mac OS X missing Preferences- Applications- Preview Doc (application/PDF) entry to set behavior for PDF files

I want to set Firefox to automatically download or save a PDF without the panel coming up to ask me. However, when I go to Firefox->Preferences->Applications there is no entry for PDF files to set it to open or save the file without asking me (i.e., no Preview Document (application/PDF).
I am using Firefox 17.0 with Mac OS X 10.6.8 using Intel Core 2 Duo

I have .pdf associated with Preview. The issue is that in Firefox->Preferences-> Application tab does NOT contain an entry for Preview Document ((application/PDF) which is needed to do an association that will occur automatically every time Firefox encounters a doc of that type. (the application tab has Preview Document (image/<6 types>) but no entry for the PDF format.

  • Firefox will not use Adobe Reader for viewing PDFs

No matter how many times I am forced to manually browse the Adobe folder and select "Acrobat Reader 11" as my default application to handle PDF documents, Firefox never keeps that setting. In addition, Adobe Reader is never even a choice in the "Open with..." Browse button. When I try to let it use Adobe Acrobat (I have the CS6 Master Collection installed) with a rendered PDF, it doesn't even launch the application. I know those may be separate issues, but they are both equally frustrating PDF errors.

You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use another application like the Adobe Reader or set to Always Ask in "Firefox > Options/Preferences > Applications".
You can set the pdfjs.disabled pref to true on the <b>about:config</b> page to disable the build-in PDF viewer.
You can check the value of the plugin.disable_full_page_plugin_for_types pref on the about:config page and remove the application/pdf part if present or reset the pref to the default via the right-click context menu.

  • I want to use preview to view pdf files without trashing the adobe plug-ins?

Some of the government web sites that I need to visit regularly require me to use firefox and adobe for opening and viewing files. I would like to still be able to use Safari and Preview for opening, viewing and printing files from other web sites. Before the latest adobe update this was no problem, but now Adobe seems to have taken control over the viewing and printing settings so that even though I try printing from a Safari viewer window I get an Adobe message that this is not supported. I tried to search for an answer as I suppose I am not the only one having this problem after the most recent Adobe update. Thanks for your great help everyone. /Christian

  • Beachball in Preview for certain pdf documents

    Hi,
I have problems reading documents containg larger graphics in pdf format with Preview. I see a spinning beachball for a long period (>1min) and my whole system is completeley blocked. Acroread loads the page slowly, but much faster than Preview (about 5s).
Can I do something to improve the behaviour of Preview? A blocked system is really annoying.
    Gernot

    Hi, Gernot.
    1. In Preview's Preferences, under PDF, try deselecting (unchecking) the following options if selected:• Anti-alias text and line art.
    • Remember last page viewed.I suspect the first option (anti-alias) may be causing the delay if the PDF contains very large, high-res images.
    2. See the "Troubleshooting performance problems" section of my "Tuning Mac OS X Performance" FAQ.
    3. There are other potential causes for long delays when opening documents, generally on the order of 30-35 seconds. See my "Spinning Beach Ball Of Death (SBBOD)" FAQ, specifically the section entitled "SBBOD spins for 30-35 seconds. You may hear your hard drives spinning up."
PS: As a tip for future question posts, I recommend adding the amount of RAM installed in your PowerBook to the information in your profile. Click "My Settings" in the "Welcome yourscreenname" box in the upper-right corner of this page, then add that detail to the "Computer" field therein. Use the "Other Computer Information" field if additional space is required.
    Good luck!

this is no adobe specific error, it's from your application. You've some entries in your customizing so that specific texts are expected by the form.
go to the context, search your text there and check wheter the checkbox "no error when text is missing" is activated or not...
if the textbox is not activated but the text is missing --> thats the behaviour you have

  • How to create the Table of Contents in Preview for a pdf file?

Does anyone know how to use the Preview to create a new table of contents or add a new link to the existing table of contents?
    Thanks

Preview cannot do this - it is not a PDF editing utility. If you have the original document in an editable format (eg a Pages, or Word document) then you can edit it, print it, and from the print dialogue, save as a PDF. Otherwise you'll need the full Adobe product or similar to acheive what you want.

  • API for viewing PDF?

    Does anybody know something about
a java api that is able to display PDF - Documents?

There is free PDF viewer in Java -> http://www.pdfgo.com/
There is also Java version of Acrobat Reader - directly from Adobe.

  • Unable to turn on Advanced Search for viewing PDFs (v9.1) through IE7

Our company is currently using Acrobat 9.1 and Internet Explorer 7.
We have multiple PDF document sets set up to be searched using index files. The Index feature can only be accessed using the Advanced Search option of Acrobat Reader or Pro 9.1.
When we access the documents via our internal network, the advanced searching works fine. We can easily set the user's Acrobat Reader (or Writer) to have the Advanced Search option enabled.
However, if our users try to access these documents via our company's intranet web pages, the Acrobat Reader Interface plug-in (acropdf.dll?) of IE7 is fixed to only use the Basic Search option. Users are only able to search the active PDF.  I have not found a way to enable the the Advanced Search option using the Adobe / IE7 interface.
Not that long ago, we thought this option was available.
Is there a way to turn this feature on or at least allow it to be enabled?
    Thanks Much!

    Hello,
This may be of interest to anyone whose had the Advanced Search Problem (or the mis-linking problem mentioned below) using the current Acrobat Plugin to IE7.
I think I have found a workaround for this problem (and another we've found). I've been having users test this out over the past couple of weeks and it's working fine.
    Problem #1
Being unable to use index searching across multiple documents with the Acrobat Reader 9.1 plug-in interface running from within Internet Explorer version 7.0.    This current plug-in interface disallows setting up the Advanced Index Search feature that groups within our company use.
    Problem #2
Links in PDF A are not properly linking to desired pages (link targets) in PDF B.  Any links in PDF A will only take the user to Page 1 of PDF B.   This occurs when any PDF links to a certain page (other than page 1) in another targeted PDF.
    Solution:
Set the user's (many users in my case) Acrobat Reader (or Pro) to only open web based PDFs into the stand-alone Acrobat interface using the Accessibility Setup Assistant.
    In Adobe Reader:
Go to Document | Accessibility Setup Assistant.
Advance through the dialogs to Screen 5 of 5.
Turn OFF the feature Display PDF documents in web browser.
         Select Done.
         Exit Adobe reader.
    In Adobe Acrobat Pro:
Go to Advanced | Accessibility | Setup Assistant ...
Advance through the dialogs to Screen 5 of 5.
Turn OFF the feature Display PDF documents in web browser.
         Select Done.
    Result:
Any PDFs embedded in a web page (environment) will open up in a new session of Acrobat (Reader or Pro) on the users desktop.
Searching via indexes works great and there are no linking problems between PDFs.
It may not be an optimal solution, but is working fine for our folks that access our files via our company's intranet.
The only drawback I see is that you lose focus of the IE7 session and have to work outside of it's containment.  Although it is easy to set it back to the way it worked previously.
If anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know.  I'm open to any improvements we can make to our process.
    Thanks!
    Dave

  • Bridge CC is not showing previews for PSD, PDF, AI

I am unable to see previews of these in Bridge CC. It doesn't seem to be hanging or busy regenerating previews, just won't show them. Double clicking opens the in relevant program. Using Windows 7 Pro and 64-bit version.

    Welcome to the forum,
Not sure if it's the issue or if it will help, but you could try purging the cache, etc..
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/using/adobe-bridge-workspace.html
    Restore preferences
Numerous program settings are stored in the Adobe Bridge preferences file, including display, Adobe Photo Downloader, performance, and file-handling options.
Restoring preferences returns settings to their defaults and can often correct unusual application behavior.
Press and hold the Ctrl key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS) while starting Adobe Bridge.
In the Reset Settings dialog box, select one or more of the following options:
    Reset Preferences
Returns preferences to their factory defaults. Some labels and ratings may be lost. Adobe Bridge creates a new preferences file when it starts.
    Purge Entire Thumbnail Cache
Purging the thumbnail cache can help if Adobe Bridge is not displaying thumbnails properly. Adobe Bridge re-creates the thumbnail cache when it starts.
    Reset Standard Workspaces
Returns Adobe predefined workspaces to their factory default configurations.
Click OK, or click Cancel to open Adobe Bridge without resetting preferences.
If that does not help, you may try searching the Bridge forum or asking there.

  • Making Adobe Reader my default application for viewing PDF files.

    Hello,
Can someone help me on this issue. I am trying to put adobe reader as the default pdf application instead of preview. I have tried everything...however when i download a pdf document it only provides me the choice to open with preview.
    Thanks,

Control/click (or right click if you're using a two button mouse) on whatever file you're wanting to change the association to. In the menu that comes up select "Get Info" and another box will open. Down towards the bottom you should see Open with: and a drop down that has suggested apps. If it's in the list select it (if not navigate to it) and then once that file is associated with whatever app. right below you'll see Change All... and select it and now all those file types will open with whatever app you've selected.

  • Default setting for viewing pdf's

I am saving pdfs to be opened within an intranet site - the current default setting is 'Fit one Page to Window' what I'd like the default to be is 'Fit to window width and enable scrolling' - Can this default setting be changed?
The documents are created within MSExcel 2013 and saved as PDF.

Only with the paid Acrobat product or a 3rd party program.

  • HT2506 how do you set Preview as the default for opening pdf in browser?

How do I set the Preview application to be the default for viewing PDF's in while in Safari?  Previously, while in Safari and clicking on links to PDF's, they would display with buttons on the bottom that made it simple to view and download the PDF.  Since updating Adobe Reader it seems Reader is now the default application for viewing PDF's accessed from the internet.  I haven't been able to figure out how to revert back to Preview.....

I did this and now Safari won't open the form at all.
I put the files back and it opens in Adobe.
When I save the files to desktop they open in Preview. But I am trying to read pdf's(? forms) while in Safari.
Adobe does not work smoothly in Safari and scrolling to read is a nightmare.
    OS X 10.8.5
This problem came up within the last few months.
Before everything opened in Preview perfectly.

  • Can't open, download or view PDFs - Tried all fixes recommended on this site!

I updated Firefox yesterday and now I am suddenly unable to open, download or view PDF documents on my mac. I just get a blank page in Firefox when I click on a PDF link.<br />
I tried every fix I could find on this forum and others:<br />
Disabling both the Acrobat NPAPI Plugin and the Acrobat Reader Plugin<br />
delete the mimeTypes.rdf file in the Firefox Profile Folder to reset all file actions.<br />
installing another PDF reader plug-in<br />
    Cleared download history<br />
    Reset Firefox<br />
Checked status of Download Folder - no 'user set' values<br />
    Reinstalled Firefox<br />
    Fixed all Mac Permissions<br />
Still same thing PDF tries to open in a new tab - I just get a blank window… even when my PDF Preferences are set for the pop-up dialogue to show so I can choose whether to save, open or view.<br />
AND my Firefox preferences are set for viewing in Acrobat Pro X (this was how I had it set up before the update and had no problems - all PDFs opened in this application. (my preferred)
I am stumped. Anyone have any fresh ideas? HELP!! :) Thank you
