Adjusting the brightness of an external display

Does anyone know how of a program, command, or setup that will allow me to dim my external display (HP L1906) using my PowerBook? It's extremely annoying and visually unappealing that, in low light conditions, my external display keeps on full blast while my PowerBook dims to almost nothing.

This is a bug others have reported and I've seen.

Meanwhile, you can simply detach the video cable from the computer when you don't want that display in use, or add an A/B box to switch the display cable on the computer to go to a second non-existent display.

I had this peculiar ‘issue’ hooking up to my MacBook Retina when my Thunderbolt Display was delivered but Applecare - thanks Andrew - got me there. It seems daft!
The Thunderbolt Display Brightness slider IS there – you just have to know how to make it show up.
At initial set-up of the Thunderbolt Display [or if the Brightness slider is ever not visible in the System Preferences> Thunderbolt Display window], so long as the Thunderbolt [external] Display and the Macbook Display are ‘mirrored’ I can control the Thunderbolt [external] Display via my MacBook Retina Brightness keys [F1 & F2] – or by the Brightness slider that THEN appears in my System Preferences>Thunderbolt Display window. Once set up the Thunderbolt Display System Preferences Window continues to show the Brightness slider but I occasionally lose it if my MacBook has been disconnected from the Thunderbolt Display for some time – and I then have to start over.
So:-
Apple menu >
System Preferences>
Displays>
Click Arrangement [at the top]
Click Mirror Displays [at the lower left]
That then gives me-at-least a Brightness slider on the System Preferences> Thunderbolt Display window [as well as on the Built In Retina Display window] and I can then adjust them independently.
Oddly, having set this up just once the Brightness slider then remains on my Thurnderbolt Display and I can control it [and my MacBook Retina Display independently]. Occasionally I lose it again and have to start over.
Hope this works for others.

Windows can not adjust the brightness on this display

I have a Toshiba Satellite LX835-D3300 ( Serial #ZC119804Q )
I want to brighten my display, but it tells me..... Windows can not adjust the brightness on this display.
In my HELP section on my computer it tells me to...
Tap or click PC and devices, then tap or click Display
Make sure the Adjust my screen brightness automatically slider is turned on
Get the best display on your monitor - Microsoft Windows Help
(If you don't want the screen brightness to change automatically, tap or click the Adjust my screen brightness automatically slider to turn it off.)
Tap or click Apply.
I do not have that.
I notice that if I go to the side of my screen and then click on Devices, click on projects... "Second Screen" is showning
I clicked on it and then I went and clicked on PC screen only and it is highlighted, but when I go back to it, it stills shows "Second Sreen"
Please help me. What am I doing wrong

Thank you for the quick response. I opened both the TIFF and the EPS in Illustrator. I used the Eyedropper tool to get the CMYK values of the color of the text part in the TIFF, then I went back to the EPS and selected the text and input the CMYK values in the color tab. I know it's not precise, but it's close enough. Could I have done this better?
Yes, I have access to Photoshop but I haven't tried using it with vector files. I am really new to graphic design and I need all the help I can get. Thank you!

If you are still on 10.4.11 (stongly doubt it) you probably have wired keyboard, the F3 key is for brightness. Also check System Preferences - Universal Access - Seeing and check there too.

HT3924 Adjusting the brightness doesn't work

This article states "Use the keyboard of the iMac in TDM to adjust display brightness" but this does nothing. It can adjust the sound but the brightness keys don't do anything. The display stays at full brightness.

I figured it out! You can only adjust the brightness if you are logged in on the iMac. So you have to unplug the external card or MacBook, log in, then plug it back in. Then you can adjust the brightness until the screen saver comes on...

All the windows on the tv monitor are streched out.
Is there a way that I can have the same proportions on the tv as on the macboo?

Hi,
Here are some common ways to adjust the brightness.
Open windows Control Panel, open Windows Mobility Centre and adjust the brightness here.
On a lot of notebooks, tapping f3 will often increase the brightness ( with f2 reducing it ).
Open windows Control Panel, open Power Options, click Change Plan Settings next to your selected power plan and you can adjust the brightness here.

I have to keep adjusting the brightness

I have a mid 2010 Macbook Pro 13". For the past several days whenever it has gone to sleep or when it has been turned off and restarted I have had to go in and adjust the brightness. When it comes back on the brightness is nearly all the way down. It has never done this before and I don't know why it has started now. No new programs have been installed to make it do this.

I tired that. I even unchecked it and then rechecked it. The box is checked when I open the display preferences to turn up the brightness after it has dimmed. The only thing different is that the slider is all the way to the left which is the dim position. So I slide it back to where I like it but like I said it goes back to dim anytime it has been off for a while. Thanks.

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with adjusting the brightness in your Lenovo Y50-70 laptop.
Try to reinstall the energy management and check fo the issue.
Click here for the energy management.
Also try to increase the brightness in the control panel ->display->adjust brightness and check for the issue.

Hi:
Make sure under the display adapters category that you see the name(s) and model number(s) of the graphics adapters listed there.
If you see a graphics device labeled Microsoft Basic Display Adapter, the applicable graphics driver was not installed.
You also need to install the Intel chipset installation utility and reboot before installing the graphics driver.
Not having the chipset and graphics drivers installed are the most likely reasons you cannot adjust the screen brighness (it is stuck on maximum).

My white macbook screen only works shortly when booting and when adjusting the brightness (turning it all the way down and up from there) and only stays on for seconds. any idea what to do?

Hi. I'm having quite an issue here. My macbook screen is only lid when i boot and when i adjust the brightness of the screen (going all the way down and up from there). either way it goes black again after a few seconds. External monitor works though.

I buy the dirty theory as well. plug and unplug a whole bunch of times - you may be able to dislodge whatever is causing the issue. Also - make sure the plug is fully seated - (some of the pad jacks are vert tight, and you really have to work them in). I gather you are out of warrenty? Blow in the hole.
last resotr - take a toothpick, dip the end in fingernail polish, get rid of the xs, then very very gently, insert the pick and try to rub the contacts. very gently as you do not want to bend them.

Have you plugged the USB cable into the computer also as the brightness is controlled over USB. If this does not work, you would need the Apple Display Driver for the version of Windows that you are using. The display driver is part of BootCamp software that you may be able to find online

Lenovo G50-30 Can't adjust the brightness

recently i bought a lenovo G50-30 laptop with windows 8.1(64-bit)
the performance was low and i downgraded it to windows 7 professional (32-bit) which improved the performance drastically,
Now when ever i try to install the vga driver i get this message saying "this computer does not have the minimum requirements for installing
this software",and also i cant adjust the brightness
Did i do anything wrong,does anyone know what to do

sorry for the late reply, here's the things you can try , try rolling back the driver or you can access the registry to adjust some values here's the step:
1- install latest driver of your graphic card
2- This step will fix the problem:
3 go to registery by regedit and change the value to 0xf048
