Adjusting volume within a clip

I think I have read on the discussion board that iMovie '08 doesn't have this feature, but I want to be sure: Is it possible to adjust part of the volume of a clip within that clip?
For example, I have a cute clip of my grandchildren, but right in the middle of it, someone in the background is cussing for about two seconds. Splitting the clip to remove that part of the audio ruins the video part.
This may sound like a broken record, but in iMovie '06 I could adjust the volume by clicking on View Volume Tracks. Not possible in iMovie '08?

Dear Appleman 1958: One more question. In iMovie '06 there were some cool Video FX features. My little granddaughters particularly liked the fairy dust that could be strewn across video of them. Have those features been taken out of iMovie '08?

How can I adjust volume on multiple clips at the same time in FCP?

Highlight all the clips you want to adjust, then press Apple "+" or Apple "-" to raise and lower the levels in increments of 1, and Apple "[" and Apple "]" to raise and lower the levels in increments of 3.

  • Can't adjust volume of audio clips

For some reason sliding the audio volume on the clip does absolutely nothing to the volume when I play it back!
    Please tell me what's wrong.

Is the audio contained within the clip, that is, is it the audio initially recorded with the video? Or is the audio an added soundtrack (music or voiceover)? If it is the added soundtrack, you need to click on the small gear icon on the green or purple track that sits under the thumbnails - not on the clip thumbnails themselves - then select "Audio Adjustments" from the pop-up menu. The Inspector will open, allowing you to make the appropriate adjustments to the volume etc.
If you have dragged a music soundtrack into the background of your project, so that the whole background is coloured green, click on the small gear icon located in the upper left corner, select "Audio Adjustments" and continue from there, as above.
Likewise, if you wish to adjust the volume on the actual video clips, select the clips and click on the gear icon on one of them and follow the steps above. To select a range of clips, if the clips are adjoining click on the first clip then Shift-click on the last. If not adjoining, click on the first then Command-click on each of the others in the range.
Hope I'm not misunderstanding what you may have already tried!

  • Adjusting volume within Final Cut Express

Hi all - can someone please advise how to change volume in FCexpress. I need to face in and fade out along the audio timeline.
    Many thanks

Turn on the opacity overlays (clip overlays).  Then use the pen tool to place keyframes along the overlay line in the audio track(s) at the locations where you want to adjust the gain.  Then use the select tool to drag the audio overlay line up or down appropriately to achieve the levels you want.  Always keep in mind that these adjustments happen between two successive keyframes - you may need to add more keyframes than you would otherwise believe necessary.
You can also set keyframes and adjust the gain if you open the clip in the Viewer and select the audio tab.
Also, if you increase the gain, watch the levels meter - try not to let the meter exceed -6db at the loudest parts.  If it exceeds 0db you will get some nasty clipping.

  • Is there a way to adjust volume across multiple clips or entire movie?

I am editing a lot of movies flying in ultralights. I want to keep the noise of the engine in the background, but I would like to lower the volume across the entire video. When there are 30+ clips it's very tedious to do one at a time when what I would like to do is apply the fix to the whole video. Is there a way?

Open tools and go to Audio Mixer.

  • How to adjust volume within a single track?

I have recently purchased Logic Express 9 as I moved from a PC to MAC.If i record a single track, such as vocals, is there any way I can adjust the volume level at different places on that single track? I was able to do this very easily in Acid Pro. All I see in Logic is the ability to increase or decrease the track volume as a whole. Thanks!

To add to the tips… Make your right tool the marquee tool in Logic. Now when you are in the vocal track and in automation mode, hold Command and you'll get the Marquee tool. Drag a box around the phrase you want to adjust, release command (returning to the pointer) and click on the selection. Now you'll have 4 nodes or handles. Drag the automation line up and down to taste. I manually "compress" all my vocal tracks with an automation pass using this trick.

  • Adjusting volume for multiple QT clips

If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it! I have about 100 5 or so minute QT clips at various volumes. They are a series of mini-tutorials for language learning. Most are about the same volume, but when some were recorded, the volume was much too high. I'd like to standardize the volume for all of them. None need volume boosting. Can QT batch adjust volume for multiple clips? Or is there some standard process so that the viewer isn't constantly adjusting the volume (apart from re-recording!).
    Thanks,
    Tony

  • I can't change the volume of the sound over time within a clip.

I want to adjust the level of the sound within a clip. I take my pen tool and just add 2 keyframes a few seconds apart from eachother. I adjust the height of the last keyframe, but when I playback NOTHING happends. This is so annoying because it has always worked. I use Premiere Pro 5.5.

I'm having the same problem. The volume controls and volume keyframes suddenly stop working. I've been having it occur a lot, both on my 2011 iMac running Mavericks and my 2013 MacBook Pro Retina running Mountain Lion, two entirely different systems. It seems to start happening at random while editing projects, and I can't figure out how to make it stop.
I attached a screenshot to show the audio meters displaying loud sound output, even though sole unmuted track has keyframes all the way down at "negative infinity" decibels.
I have done the following things to troubleshoot:
    -restarted computer, restarted premiere
    -re-rendered the sequence
-tried removing and reapplying volume keyframes
-double check that the track volume is untouched, at 0db
-double check that the master volume is untouched, at 0db
-checked that the volume control bypass is not on
-tried muting and unmuting the track
-tried on a different operating system
However, changing the audio gain (by ctrl-clicking on the audio track, and changing the entire gain of the clip), does still work.
    Thanks for any help.

  • Adjusting volumes in Sound

    Hey,
I'm working from a c++ program where the user would speak into a microphone when prompted, and the system's microphone recording volume would be adjusted accordingly to stop the sound from being too loud/quiet.
This is so that speech samples taken after this 'calibration' are of good quality (in volume sense).
Is there a way of accessing system volume settings in Java?
No, forget that, it's bad and wrong... Is there a sly way of having the same effect as this? (Got SOME experience of java sound, but not amazing amounts)
    Thanks!

System volume controls, when reduced, get rid of clipping from loud input, because these controls affect the original signal
I need to find a technique which has the same effect. I need to know whether using controls like FloatControl have the effect where (for example a loud signal, clipping because the system volume controls are high) the clipped signal isn't just reduced to a lower volume but still clipped signal, but actually uses the original input, and thus 'removes' (so to speak) the clipping.
    Is it possible?

  • How to adjust volume on Audio Timelines

A couple questions about volume adjustment on the various Audio Timelines on Premiere Pro CS 5.
    1) How to adjust volume level of an mp3 on the Audio 2 timeline?
    2) How to adjust or mute volume of an 'individual' video clip on the Video 1 and Audio 1 timeline? (I have many clips on the timeline and know how to mute them all, but in this case, I'm looking to only mute certain clips in the timeline.)

Along with the material covered in the Help File, that Ann linked to, see this ARTICLE. It goes into a little more detail on the differences between Clip Keyframes and Track Keyframes (generated with Audio Mixer). While the effect of those can be the same, there are nuances, that one should make note of.
    Good luck,

  • Best way to adjust lighting in video clips

Is there a "best" way to adjust lighting conditions within a video clip?  I have a clip with terrible lighting conditions and cannot reshoot the scenario.
While I don't expect a perfect solution, I am hoping that there are better approaches than the ones I've been using.  If recommendations include third-party plugins, I would appreciate hearing about them, as well.
I have been using the gamma corrector and luma corrector filters.  The gamma corrector adjustments in greater values, but seems to only work in discrete steps.  So, if the gamma needs to be stepped up or down within a clip, there is a very visible and sometimes jarring visual effect.  The luma corrector seems to only be able to increase the brightness level (through a combination of all 5 or 6 variables including brightness, gain, gamma, etc.) before the clip looks washed out.
    Thanks,
    Steve

All CC and Grading should start with "Levels"
You could then go into 3-Way Color Correction.
You could also look at a more powerful CC such as Colorista 2

  • Adjusting volume to account for recordings of unequal quality

I'm creating an iMovie with photo clips and music. I know how to view and adjust volume levels on the audio. Each of the song bits that I'm using are entered at the same volume level.
However, during playback, some songs are quite loud and others seem too soft.
How do I make them more the same...is it even possible?
    sgc

    sgcable,
"How do I make them more the same...is it even possible?"
Two songs set to the same volume level in iMovie will not necessarily sound that way. The level for any particular piece of audio is relative to the level at which it was originally recorded at.
So, in your case, you might try lowering the level of the audio that's too loud and raising it for those clips that seem too soft.
Let your ears be your guide, not volume settings themselves.

  • How do you change the volume for multiple clips in one go?

    Hi all,
Im having some trouble with audio. Im posting this in a rush so sorry in advance if its a bit muddled! Im editing snow reports with a journo piece to camera (track one lapel microphone) with overlay (track two nat sound ).
    1. is there a way to only bring in track one only and track two only from the source monitor?
    2. Is it possible to adjust the volume on multiple clips that are on the timeline (so that i can bring down the nat sound for all of the overlay track two)
At the moment im bringing them into the timeline and adjusting them individually. I tried lowering the volume on one clip and saving it as a preset but    it wont let me.
    your help is greatly appreciated
    Paul

Duplicate the audio once editing is done.  In the Mixer window, apply the Fill Left effect to one audio track, and the Fill Right effect to the other.  Then adjust the mixer appropriately.

  • Adjusting audio of multiple clips in the timeline simultaneously

Is there a way to adjust the audio volume of multiple clips in the timeline simultaneously?

Or you can send the whole things over to Audition and work in multitrack there.
I like to get everything edited in Prmiere and then send the audio (I never bother with a refernce video) to Audition for finish work.  There you can apply effects to individual clips, individual tracks or the entire mix.  I always put a hard limiter on the Master track at -3dB to prevent clipping.  Since this is the last filter in the chain I can boost other clips first and still know that my audio will never be too loud
