Adjustment brush auto mask broken for 32bit TIFF image

Hello,
I am using Lightroom 4.2 (updated today) on Windows 7 64bit. I have an issue using the adjustment brush with the option "Auto Mask" within a 32 bit TIFF file: the Auto Mask magic there does not work.
I've created 32 bit TIFF files using the "merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop" workflow, where the resulting TIFF is automatically added back to Lightroom. There, I edit the TIFF just in the same way as I edit any other picture in Lightroom. Some of my TIFF files have very clear edges with high contrast. Example:
I assume you agree with me that the adjustment brush Auto Mask must be able to detect this particular edge between the blue sky and the almost black wall of a building. However, when I use the adjustment brush on this edge (no feather, 100 density and flow, show selected mask overlay in green), it does not detect the transition:
When I do the same in one of the RAW pictures that contributed to the TIFF above, Auto Mask works as expected:
I tried this with various edges in various TIFF and RAW files. In the RAW files, basically all edges are detected, while  the Auto Mask feature entirely fails in my TIFFs. I've first observed this in Lightroom 4.1. Then I updated to 4.2 which did not change the behavior.
Is there something I can do wrong? Note that in this tutorial: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/quick-tip-creating-32bi t-hdr-images-in-lr-41/ Julieanne Kost is doing exactly this: first she merges a set of pictures to a HDR TIFF and then she uses the adjustment brush with Auto Mask in the resulting TIFF. In the video it looks like the edge detection works properly for her.
Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks!

Auto-mask has great potential, but is not quite there yet...
I'd like to see a little more control - what exactly you are trying to mask, and what not... - ya now: some tolerances/thresholds for color and luminosity and texture... - and maybe the ability to enhance the edges after the fact.

  • LR3.3 adjustment brush auto mask problem

I appreciate any and all help with this issue.
When I use the adjustment brush in LR 3.3 with the auto mask selected I get a speckled result.  If I deslect the auto mask it works fine.  I was hoping that 3.3 update would fix the issue but no luck.
    My OS is Vista 64bit
    thanks for your time.

  • How do I use the adjustment brush to mask and not turn my item green?

I have shot some products for my web site.  I need completely white backgrounds. I have tried to mask the product and lighten the whites, but when I click done, my product has turned very green.
Why?  How do you use the brush?  Also, where is the invert to make this easier on me?
Kind of urgent, I need to get these items on my site already.
I know the answer is simple... I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks

Have you tried without the adjustment brush, by simply adjusting white balance from the basic tab in develop?
Click on the eye dropper tool and then click on a neutral gray color. Use the background if it is neutral rather than white. You may need to keep selecting the eye dropper to click in a few different places for best results.
If you decide to use the adjustment brush you can show or hide the mask. Uncheck the mask when you have finished painting; then use the sliders, starting with tint and temperature.

  • Export File to PS with Adjustment Brush effects/masks

This may have been answered before but I searched Google and such with no luck to finding an answer or unsure of what exactly to search as.
Basically Im curious to know if you edit a photo in Lightroom and use the adjustment brush to desaturate the background of a photo for example, then want to export and do further editing in Photoshop, is it possible to do so and have the adjustment brush effects as a mask or layer of sorts to then easily edit in Photoshop?
Since the adjustment brush feature in Lightroom automatically creates a mask I thought I would be useful to import into photoshop and still retail the mask somehow making it easy to isolate that area masked out.
    Thanks.

Thanks, bit of a shame, I do prefer the ease of how LR masks out the areas easily with the brushes.
I could do it manually in PS but takes some time.
I've seen a few plugins for layers within LR but I think its an external type app run via LR (OnOne Software makes it) but I doubt it'll do what I want from the looks.

  • Has anyone experienced a problem with the adjustment brush since last update (for Mac) last week?

Following an update to Lightroom on my Mac Pro work station last Friday: when I apply my adjustment brush to an area in an image, a faint box encompassing a much larger area than the size of my brush appears (extends well beyond the area I've identified with my brush and is clearly a large square shape). When I release my mouse, the adjustment I've made affects my entire image. I had no issues with adjustment brush prior to the update. I've been on the phone with Adobe support (no help). Have uninstalled/reinstalled Lightroom several times (no help). Adobe directed me to Apple (recommend use of Time Machine to date before Lightroom update came through). To ensure it's an isolated bug, I checked my MacBook Pro. Worked fine without update; I let update come through and find the adjustment brush "bug" is intermittent. When it occurs, however, I always see the larger "box" area, and the adjustment brush ultimately affects my entire image.
Anyone else experiencing this? Adobe support insists it's a Mac issue. Thanks!

Same problem (rectangular areas) + others under Windows. The adjustment brush and the clone / heal tool have been totally broken in LR 3.2. You're not alone. See this thread. I have filed a bug report. No answer until now.

  • Adjustment Brush shows mask but not effect

When I try to brush in an effect with the Adjustment Brush, all I see is the red mask that is created, not the effect. When I click 'Close' I see the effect, but can't see any real time adjustments while editing it. If I hover over the effect circle (which has a black center), the brush changes to some sort of double arrow pointer, but clicking on it has no effect.

Hit "O" to or "Shift-O" to shut off or change the color of the mask overlay.

  • DNG Profiles with 32bit Tiff images

I am wondering what the correct procedure for creating these new 32bit HDR Tiff files in LR4.1 is, when you also want the image to have custom DNG profiles that were created from the XRite color checker. I know how to take 6 images, merge them to HDR in photoshop, save the image as a 32bit tiff. But how can I be sure my DNG profile went with the image over into PS. Also, do each of the images going into the HDR have to have the exact same whitebalance. Does lightroom secretly create tiff files before sending them to PS, or is it sending PS the RAW files to combine? Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks Rick

Hi Eeric, Having so many control points was in a effort to match the profile to the output of Capture NX, so that I could integrate all my workflow into Photoshop. I could not do without the use of as many control points because as you could see, so many hues of green were off. we should find a way around this problem. either like developing a set methodology of aproaching color adjustment or something else. I also suggest having a "Color Curve" probably something on the lines of the tone curve with input and output values of Hue.
I feel that there should also be a way to adjust the color range that each color control point can influence. That way there will not be a need to put too many control points close together.

  • Adjustment brush working in limited parts of the image

The adjustment brush only shows the brush tool on certain parts of the picture. I can start the adjustment in those parts of the picture and move over to the area that needs to be adjusted, but can not start the adjustment from the part of the picture that needs adjusting. How do I get it to be available for the whole picture?

That seems to have been an issue with the last several versions of photoshop.
Turning off open gl (use graphics processor) will make the dot grid display correctly, but at the expense of no open gl functions like 3d.
It could be a nvidia vs amd thing where one graphics card brand doesn't render the dot grid that way, but the other brand does.

  • The"Auto Mask" option of Adjustment Brush in Camera Raw

In Camera Raw, I saw the "Auto Mask" option at the bottam of all the slides of Adjustment Brush, what is this option for?
When you halt your mouse in this option, it prompts that it is for adjusting the sensitivity of brush's edge, but I don't understand what does it mean exactly.

    No.

Might as well go into Photoshop and spend 30 minutes doing my own mask if the excessive haloing can't be improved.
Many of us were hoping Adobe would invest in improving the auto-masking technology for Lr4, but didn't happen. Fingers crossed for Lr5...
As is, it's only marginally useful...

  • Silly question (I hope) re: Adjustment Brush in LR3

For some strange reason, my Adjustment brush is not working for "Sharpening."  All of the other functions (i.e. Exposure, Clarity, etc.) seem to work just fine....only the sharpening is causing me headache.  Does anyone have a suggestion?
For the record, I currently have my sharpness set at 44, Size 23, Feather 16 (i have adjusted this down to 0...still not change), Flow 87, and Auto Mask is checked.
    Thanks a bunch in advance!

Hit "O" and see if you are actually getting a mask.  Then make sure you're looking at the image at 1:1.  Then check your detail panel settings as those are what are used by the brush too.

  • Issue with Clone Tool and Adjustment Brush in LR5.3

If I export a .TIFF from LR5.3 in which I've used the Clone Tool or Adjustment Brush Tool and then load the .TIFF up in Photoshop CS2 to perform further edits, I can't save the file to a .JPG - I get a '...program error...' message during the save.  If I turn off the tool and export the file from LR5 again, I can do the edits in Photoshop and save it as a .jpg.  The same thing will happen in Capture NX2 trying to save the LR5 exported .TIFF to .JPG.    Has anyone else experienced this and are there any workarounds?

    ***UPDATE*** 3/7/14
Apparently no one has experienced the issue as I posted above, but in case anyone is interested, I have discovered a workaround.  For some reason, the issue manifests itself when I export the TIFF with the option 'Metadata - Include All Metadata'.  If I change the Metadata option to the 'Copyright Only' or 'Copyright & Contact Info Only' I am able to open the TIFF in Photoshop, make edits as needed, and then save as a JPG.  Apparently LR5 is doing something weird with the Metadata file header that Photoshop and Capture NX2 doesn't like under certain circumstances.

  • Strange behavior of LR3 local adjustment brush

Lately, it seems that LR3 (Mac) is acting strange when doing local adjustments. When using the adjustment's brush, the area being "painted on", i.e., adjustments, a square area centered on the cursor position is shaded a bit darker than the area not covered by the brush. What gives?

I have had similar problems with 3.2 and also (while doing local adjustments)
    - rectangular areas of the image suddenly duplicated elsewhere in the image
    - whole image flipped upside down while painting with the local adjustment brush
Using Undo always put back the image in a normal state (the state it was before starting to apply the last local adjustment).
I have not seen this in 3.3 (final release) until now but I didn't use it much since it has been made available.
NB: (before someone asks) Yes, I do have the latest NVidia driver installed.

  • Why don't changes made in camera raw with the adjustment brush carry into photoshop?

Why don't changes made in camera raw with the adjustment brush carry into photoshop?

Using the Open button in ACR to get to PS doesn’t create a PSD or a TIF, it just transfers the image in memory.
As has been asked, already, what are the precise steps of your workflow starting with your painting the adjustment brush strokes in ACR and seeing the image in PS without the strokes, and what exact versions of PS and ACR are you using?
Use Help / About Photoshop..., and Help / About Plug-ins... / Camera Raw...

  • TIFF Images Orientation

How can I distinguish whether TIFF Image which contains a Text if it is portrait or landscape??
    Explanation:
    1. TIFF image represents an A4 paper size.
    2. This paper contains Text inside it.
    3. TIFF Image (paper) should be displayed (flipped) according the Text orientation.
    4. Need to figure out the right orientation for the TIFF image to be displayed.

you are right, i was reading about that, and i need to integrate a kind of OCR with my application, then i can flip the image according the text direction.
the user is a naive end user, and I should assume that he do not know how to deal with the computer :P
now there are a lot of job to do :) guess i have to start.
