Adjustment brush differences in 3.x?

Is it just my imagination, or did the behavior of adjustment brushes change in 3.0? If my memory's correct, the adjustment brush in 2.x painted the adjustment at the set density, etc. and that was it. Continuing to use the same brush in the same area of an image did nothing more. If you wanted to enhance the effect (without changing the sliders), you could pick New brush and paint over the same area again.
But now, in 3.0, I've noticed that you can further enhance any adjustment brush effect by painting over the same area again, without creating a new adjustment brush. If you look at the mask, it will increase in density (get deeper red) every time you brush over an area, pretty much the way brushes work in Photoshop. Neat!
So is this new, or not?
Thanks,
Dave

One more significant change is that Auto-mask now works on Eraser too. I use this almost daily.
I might be misunderstanding what you mean, but the we were able to use the auto mask with eraser in Lr2, and I've just checked to make sure that I'm not imaging things.

  • Bug? Vignetting & Adjustment Brush

    Hello.
This if my first post, so please don't be too harsh if I make any mistakes. I encountered a bug (well, at least I think it is one) while using LR3 on Win7.
While editing my images I added a post-crop vignetting. After finishing the colour & contrast stuff, I went on to retouching. After "inserting" the first adjustment brush, the vignetting changes, which, I think, shouldn't happen, because I dind't even touch any area near the vignetting. See the screenshots for details. (Sorry for the black areas, I didn't want to show the person I photographed.)
The difference is not very well visible if the screenshots are placed next to each other. However you can open both images in different tabs and switch between them, then you should definitely see it. Has anyone noticed that behavior before? Or does anybody have a clue what's happening here? I would be even happy for workarounds because I use both tools very often.
    Thank you!

I'm experiencing this bug as well. In addition to the extra strength post-crop vignette that happens, I'm also getting blotchy tiles where the post-crop vignette is supposed to be when I apply an exposure brush, as seen in the attached screen grab. Takes some fiddling around to make it go away. Usually turning off the "Effects" tab then turning it back on clears it up.
I'm on LR 3.2 using an iMac i7 quad 2.8ghz, 12gb RAM, ATI 4850 card 512mb V-RAM, plenty of disc space, working on Canon 5DMk2 raw files. Cache has been cleared and catalog optimized.

  • Slow adjustment brush

I have installed the trail version of the lightroom 2.0 and updated the software to 2.1, Im running x64 bit of vista. I have problem with that when using the adjustment brush the processor time is spiking from 50% to 80% and I get a delay in response when drawing. Tested on low end machine and at work I dont have this problem? Is this graphic card related or processor memory?

    >I would like to hear from Adobe how the 3D settings on a card affects a 2D app that doesn't have Direct X or OpenGL specifications.
Actually, I would like to hear from NVIDIA on this matter. And also why, apparently, nView has such a negative affect on Lr. A brief visit to the NVIDIA forums reveal not a single mention of these problems.
Curiously, when I installed the latest NVIDIA drivers it came with preset 3D settings for Photoshop CS4 (which I do not yet have installed). It seems Adobe and NVIDIA are working closely together (http://www.nvidia.com/object/adobe.html). Perhaps we can gently ask for similar Lr settings (assuming 3D settings would make any difference).

  • PS5: In Raw mode not allowed to create Adjustment Brush adjustments

I get the following message when I try to use the Adjustment Brush:
Unable to create local adjustment. All the local adjustment controls are
set to have no effect on the image.
How do turn on the local adjustment controls?

That usually means all your adjustment sliders are set to 0 (zero)
Set one of the adjustment sliders to something other than zero, then try the Adjustment Brush and see if that makes a difference.

  • Lightroom adjustment brush inconsistent with Camera Raw

I love Lightroom's adjustment brushes, but I find it annoying that I can't use them to take saturation all the way to monochrome, even with the saturation slider turned down all the way. Today, I noticed that in Camera Raw 5.4, the same thing is NOT true - you can remove color completely with an adjustment brush.
Surprised at this difference, I wondered what would happen when I loaded the ACR-adjusted file back into Lightroom. Lo and behold, Lightroom showed the result of the adjustment brush the same way as ACR, with all color removed. Excellent!
But what would happen if I changed that adjustment brush in Lightroom? Would it "forget" what I had done in ACR and revert to its normal behavior? No, it continued to behave just as it had in ACR. But in the same photo, a brush created in Lightroom did not behave the same way. So clearly, it was something to do with which program created the brush.
Then I took a look at my XMP file, and it became (somewhat) clear what's going on. This is one of the XMP attributes for the brush created in ACR:
         <crs:MaskValue>1.000000</crs:MaskValue>
And here's the same attribute for the brush created in Lightroom:
         <crs:MaskValue>0.375000</crs:MaskValue>
The obvious next question is, what happens if you change MaskValue from 0.375000 to 1.000000? Answer: The brush  starts behaving like an ACR brush.
Now, this is kind of cool. I can get the behavior I want in Lightroom, by editing the XMP file by hand. On the other hand, editing XMP files isn't really my favorite thing. Is there some setting in Lightroom that can be used to achieve a MaskValue of 1.000000 for adjustment brushes? I couldn't find one, but hey, there are a lot of settings...

Ian, thank you! It was indeed Density that did the trick. I mistakenly thought Density had nothing to do with it, because you have to set it before you create a new brush stroke. (Each individual stroke of a particular adjustment brush can have a different Density value, along with the other Brush attributes like Size.) So I was changing it for my existing brush strokes, foolishly expecting it to work like the Effect sliders, and seeing no effect.
Jao, my flow was set to 100 all along, so I don't think that was my problem. It really seems to have been Density.

  • My understanding was that Elements shipped with Camera Raw 6.6 which included the Adjustment Brush

I have bought Elements 10 and updated the Camera Raw to 6.6 but the Adjustment Brush & Graduated Filter do not appear in the Toolbar of the Workspace.

  • Tone Curve vs. Adjustment Brush

If the Adjustment Brush is used to adjust certain tones, is there any difference in quality or other factors from using the Tone Curve in LR or PS to target the same tones?

Well, the exposure adjustment brush does not seem to use the same algorithm to recover highlights as the basic tools exposure slider. Try darkening a near blowout area with both tools and you will see a big difference.

  • Problem with Adjustment Brush enhancing parts of picture it shouldn't

Working on some pictures I encountered the following problem today. I did my major adjustments to the picture (e.g. Exposure -0,95) and then wanted to add some minor touches with the Adjustment Brush. As soon as I placed one click with the brush tool anywhere in the picture the highlights of the whole picture becamer over exposed.
This first screenshot shows the picture after the first adjustments:
Now you can see that I added an Adjustment Brush (Size:11, Feather: 25, Flow: 50, Density: 100) far away from the face and still the highlights in face are blown out. Nothing else has been changed:
Does anyone have an idea what the problem is and how to avoid ACR doing this? It does not make a difference if the adjustment brush is set to a plus or minus value.
    Thanks in advance
    Oliver
    (Win 7 x64 Ultimate, Photoshop CS5 12.0.4, ACR 6.5.0.216)

Thank you for the replies, Tai Lao.
    1. The behaviour is occuring no matter if viewed in 100%, 24% or any other magnification.
    2. No, I haven't tried ACR 6.6. Judging from this thread the problem seems to exist for quite a few versions now.
    3. The brush stroke seen on the screenshot was a "new" one. It was the first brush action done to the picture.
I tried reducing the size of the adjustment brush to 2 and place this tiny brush stroke in the outmost corner of the picture. Still the highlights went up. Opening the picture as a Smart Object before using the brush everything is fine in PS. Reopening the Smart Object in ACR and using the size 2 brush far away from the higlights causes the same unwanted beheaviour.
At first I thought it had something to do with having done some adjustment to the exposure before but testing showed that this phenomena happens even when nothing was done the picture prior to using the adjustment brush.

  • ACR 8.4 adjustment brush sluggish in Br & PS

The "adjustment brush" in ACR 8.4 has a tremendous lag in PS and Br, is OK in LR.  Everything was fine for me in ACR 8.3.  MacPro 3.33 GHz 6 core Xeon, 32 GB ram, Rad ATI HD 5870 graphic card, (No difference in basic or advanced Processor setting). OS 10.8.5.  All the other ACR sliders work fine.  This condition was also present in the 8.4 beta version,  and was fine when i switched back to 8.3.  I believe this is a core issue with 8.4 because it is also present in my other computer.

Here's what the preferences screen shows:

  • My adjustment brush in LR4 suddenly stopped working.

I was working in LR 4. My adjustment brush was working fine unrtil I turned on auto mask and h to view the pins. Now my adjustment sliders hardly change anything in either direction.

Make sure your flow and density sliders are set high enough to make a difference.

  • Eye Color adjustment brush question

On the adjustment brush when I am using it to change eye color it doesn't change the color at all. I want to change it completely not just lighten it or give it a different tint or hue.
I go to the adjustment brush, turn the saturation all the way down, and then select a color that stands out so that I will be able to tell what I am painting. When I select the color it shows it in the small window in the bottom right side of the adjustment brush "window" thing. The problem is that when I paint it, it doesn't show up at all, it barely even makes a difference no matter which color I select. How do I make it change drastically and completely? Did I accidentally tamper with the settings?
Also, when I use the "plus" and "minus" keys on the keyboard it changes clarity instead of exposure, How do I change it back to exposure?
Thanks for your time. - IZ

Check your Flow setting on the brush (the amount per stroke)
and your Density setting (the limit to how much of your effect (color in your case) settings. If either are very low (under 30 for example) you will have a tough time bulding up paint.

  • Adjustment Brush - Color Matching

I adjusted a photo in Photoshop making extensive color adjustments. I then went to the original in LR and tried to match the colors. I used the adjustment brush color picker and picked the color off of the PS image. I then painted the color in LR.
There was a huge difference in the color between the PS and LR images. Further, the LR color picker showed the correct color, but the brushed-on color in LR was very different. I tried HSL adjustments in LR, but was unable to come close to the correct color.
Is there some way to get a good match to the color chosen when brushing that color on in LR?

    Jao,
    Thank you.
I was confused about the functioning of the Saturation slider. Now I understand that it works on the underlying color, not the color being applied.
I find that I am unable to match colors using the LR Brush. So it looks like radical color adjustments are best left to PS. Also, it seems to me that adjusting color with curves in PS is more intuitive and much easier to get the color I'm looking for.

  • How do I use the adjustment brush to mask and not turn my item green?

I have shot some products for my web site.  I need completely white backgrounds. I have tried to mask the product and lighten the whites, but when I click done, my product has turned very green.
Why?  How do you use the brush?  Also, where is the invert to make this easier on me?
Kind of urgent, I need to get these items on my site already.
I know the answer is simple... I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks

Have you tried without the adjustment brush, by simply adjusting white balance from the basic tab in develop?
Click on the eye dropper tool and then click on a neutral gray color. Use the background if it is neutral rather than white. You may need to keep selecting the eye dropper to click in a few different places for best results.
If you decide to use the adjustment brush you can show or hide the mask. Uncheck the mask when you have finished painting; then use the sliders, starting with tint and temperature.

  • Wacom Tablet Pen Pressure stops working in Photoshop after using Lightroom Local Adjustment Brush

    Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with my Intuos Pro Medium (driver 6.3.9w3 on Windows 8.1)
I am using Lighroom 5.6 and Photoshop CC 2014.
I an get the pen pressure to work in Photoshop without any problem. However, if I go into Lightroom and use the Local Adjustment Brush and then transfer the photo into Photoshop (Right Click Edit In => Edit in Adobe Photoshop 2014 CC) then the pen pressure stops working in Photoshop.
Really frustrating... The only workaround is to close both Photoshop and Lightroom, then reopen Photoshop, then usually the Pen pressure feature starts working again.
Has anyone experienced this before or has any idea how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Guillaume

Your tablet driver isn't reporting pressure correctly.
The knockoff tablet drivers usually need to be revised for each new version of Photoshop (and we have no idea why).
Contact your tablet maker to see if they have updated drivers to fix their bugs.

  • New to the Adjustment Brush Tool...HELP!

Hello!  I am fairly new to Lightroom, and the Adjustment Brush tool specifically, and I am having some problems with it!  I have watched tons of tutorials on using it, and it seems relatively easy...although when I go into my program and attempt to use it, nothing happens to my photo...say if I wanted to adjust the exposure on the face of an individual, I will go in and select the tool, decrease the exposure, make the brush and feather the size I want it, and when I go to "paint" the area I want altered, nothing happens?  The pins appear as if to show me that's where I started, but then no change happens to the area I attempted to paint.  Do I need to select something somewhere to be able to actually use the brush to paint?  Any help is appreciated!!  Thank you!!

First, verify that you have painted something. At the bottom is an option that says "Show Selected Mask Overlay", enable this. It will show the area you have painted so far.
If you see pink appear, this is where you have painted so far. Try changing your adjustments more drastically (i.e. move sliders all the way one direction or another). If you see the effect appear, dial things back until you have what you want.
If you do not see pink appear, make sure your Flow and Density sliders are up. This act like opacity, so if they are too low, you aren't laying down much "paint" with your brush.
