Adjustment Brush Effect Problem

I notice that when I move the adjustment brush around curves the effect doesn't follow my pattern but takes sharp straight angles from the start to the finish. For instance if I'm changing exposure in a U-shaped pattern I get the effect in a V-shape from the start to the tip of the "U" and back to the end. Sometimes it will just take the shortcut from the start to the finish and not follow the pattern I laid down. The only way to get what I want is to move very slowly. Way too slow for an effective workflow.
Any idea what would cause this?
Thanks,
Tom

I'd guess that it is simply a very intensive task, and that it needs further fine tuning.
MMV, but for me the brush is just too unresponsive, sluggish and fussy for time limited professional work at this time. If you take it very slow and aren't in any hurry anyway, it may be satisfactory.
There are a lot of posts on this issue, so I hope it is one Adobe will be addressing soon. By the way, the brush behaved much the same in the beta version, so I suspect the LR team has had problems optimizing this feature, but had a marketing timeline to meet and released it in less than optimal readiness..

  • Export File to PS with Adjustment Brush effects/masks

This may have been answered before but I searched Google and such with no luck to finding an answer or unsure of what exactly to search as.
Basically Im curious to know if you edit a photo in Lightroom and use the adjustment brush to desaturate the background of a photo for example, then want to export and do further editing in Photoshop, is it possible to do so and have the adjustment brush effects as a mask or layer of sorts to then easily edit in Photoshop?
Since the adjustment brush feature in Lightroom automatically creates a mask I thought I would be useful to import into photoshop and still retail the mask somehow making it easy to isolate that area masked out.
    Thanks.

Thanks, bit of a shame, I do prefer the ease of how LR masks out the areas easily with the brushes.
I could do it manually in PS but takes some time.
I've seen a few plugins for layers within LR but I think its an external type app run via LR (OnOne Software makes it) but I doubt it'll do what I want from the looks.

  • Adjustment Brush - Effect - Lighten - oops!

I was in the Adjustment Brush settings > Effect > Lighten (forget the other word) and somehow... deleted the Lighten Preset
How do I restore this delete boo-boo?
    Thanking -you

    Thank-you for the reply Hal,
Yes, I seemed to get a dialog box asking me if I wanted to delete this "Preset" (Dodge) and of course I dd not understand it was referring to Dodge as a Preset or I would not have deleted it...
So - perhaps what we are looking for is a way to reinstate the "presets" for the Adjustment Brush "Effects" dropdown menu preset options...
    thank-you ~

  • Adjustment brush differences in 3.x?

Is it just my imagination, or did the behavior of adjustment brushes change in 3.0? If my memory's correct, the adjustment brush in 2.x painted the adjustment at the set density, etc. and that was it. Continuing to use the same brush in the same area of an image did nothing more. If you wanted to enhance the effect (without changing the sliders), you could pick New brush and paint over the same area again.
But now, in 3.0, I've noticed that you can further enhance any adjustment brush effect by painting over the same area again, without creating a new adjustment brush. If you look at the mask, it will increase in density (get deeper red) every time you brush over an area, pretty much the way brushes work in Photoshop. Neat!
So is this new, or not?
    Thanks,
    Dave

One more significant change is that Auto-mask now works on Eraser too. I use this almost daily.
I might be misunderstanding what you mean, but the we were able to use the auto mask with eraser in Lr2, and I've just checked to make sure that I'm not imaging things.

  • Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 5 has a different sized effect smaller than the brush size

    Hi,
When using Lightroom 5 Adjustment brush, the effect is only in the inner half of the brush size circle. In other words, if you select a 1 inch brush to darken, only about the center 1/2 inch is being darkened. I'm 100 percent sure the brush has no feathering, and all the settings are fine. An expert told me to try to get rid of preferences, and try it, and it still does the same thing. Now, I just updated to LR 5.7 hoping maybe it will fix it, to no avail. The LR on my laptop behaves perfectly fine.
Attached is a screen shot and a phone shot (excuse the moire, I had to use a phone to show the brush size properly) to show settings and the effect I'm talking about, so it's perfectly clear.
I have been putting up with this for months, but it's driving me crazy. Also, it occurred to me that all adjustments I make might 'change' later when I fix it, and it might show up unknown to me when I export the files later. And this would waste hundreds of hours of work if something resets somehow.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?
Thanks in advance for all replies!
    Stu

This problem is caused by changing the cursor size in the ACCESSIBILITY settings in your OS.  Here is a screen shot from the Mac but Windows has similar settings.  I reported this in Lightroom 2 or 3 and it is STILL not fixed. (Adobe's bug fixing rate to me is pretty dismal)   If you change your system cursor to anything except "Normal" you will get this behavior as Lightroom doesn't account for the system preferences.  I would like to make my cursor bigger but this prevents it.

  • Adjustment Brush Problem

    Dear all,
I have problem with my lightroom application. The edited point after using adjustment brush didn't appeared after i locked the editing. Its hard to change the editing because the point not apeared and i cant controlmy editing after dat because of the point is not show in the image. Howevwer the problem is not appeared in the graduating filter or spot adjustment. How can i solved this..
    Thanks for your help

When brushing, holding down the Alt key will allow you to erase instead of adding to your brush selection. Holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key will put you in AutoMask mode if it’s not selected, or turn it off temporarily if it is. The two keys can be used together.
Also, to the right of the Effect selection (under Edit) is a little rectangle (two squares side by side) that switch between ‘basic’ and ‘advanced’ mode. By switching to advanced mode more than one effect (Exposure, Brightness, Saturation, etc.) can be added to the same selection. Having done multiple effects, switching back to basic mode will allow proportional adjustment of all of the effects made.

  • Adjustment Brush - Full list under Effect not appearing.

Hi, 'am a new user of LR3.2 running on iMac and on Macbook Pro. On my iMac I was able to see the full list of Effects for Adjustment Brush but for the last couple of days I only see top half of the choices i.e., from Exporsure to Color and the bottom half choices i.e., from Burn to Teeth Whitening are not visible.  However, LR3.2 on my Macbook Pro is running fine and shows all the choices. Would appreciate if anyone has any suggestion / solution to my above problem.

gummybear (I like the nick ),
The second half of "Effects" you see in the dropdown are custom created Local Adjustment Presets, which do not seem to be present on both of your machines.
Go to Preferences (Presets tab), and click on "Show Lightroom Presets Folder ...". This will lead you to the lightroom presets folder in finder. Within the LR presets folder, you'll see a folder called "Local Adjustment Presets", in which the custom built presets can be found. Copy those of your iMac to your Macbook Pro.
You could also try clicking on "Restore Local Adjustment Presets" first, but this will not restore Local Adjustment Presets you might have created yourself, just the ones shipped with LR3.2.

  • Adjustment Brush Problems in Lightroom

So the adjustment brush works mostly fine, but the problem I'm having is that I was making a background darker but didn't finish it - so I went back later and clicked on the pin to just keep going with it and it has slightly changed somehow so if I go over what i did before at all it's now a lighter color. Sorry for the run on sentence.
Usually if you go over something with the same setting it won't show anything. I'm not sure if it has to do with the fact that I was working on this picture during a free trial which ended before I got to finish it. I then bought it later and used the number I was given to kind of revive it. All the pictures and histories were still there. And that's when the problem started. This seems to only be happening with pictures that I was editing before I bought it.
I tried updating it to 4.3 but that didn't help. I'm using a Mac. My camera is a Canon Rebel XS 1000D. Please help.

It depends on your settings if the AdjBrush will change areas that you have gone over before.
If you have set Density to 100% the first time, you won't see anything the second time if you don't change the other settings.
But when Density is to 50% each stroke will add 50% of density. if the Density is set at 25% each stroke will add 25%, etc.
You say: "Usually if you go over something with the same setting it won't show anything." That is so if your density was set to 100% the first time you used the AdjBrush.
And you say "so I went back later and clicked on the pin to just keep going with it and it has slightly changed somehow" - yes, that would be the case if you density was set to less than 100% the first time.
The settings for <Flow> also can have an effect the second time.
Flow: Controls the rate of application of the adjustment.
Density: Controls the amount of transparency in the stroke.

  • Has anyone experienced a problem with the adjustment brush since last update (for Mac) last week?

Following an update to Lightroom on my Mac Pro work station last Friday: when I apply my adjustment brush to an area in an image, a faint box encompassing a much larger area than the size of my brush appears (extends well beyond the area I've identified with my brush and is clearly a large square shape). When I release my mouse, the adjustment I've made affects my entire image. I had no issues with adjustment brush prior to the update. I've been on the phone with Adobe support (no help). Have uninstalled/reinstalled Lightroom several times (no help). Adobe directed me to Apple (recommend use of Time Machine to date before Lightroom update came through). To ensure it's an isolated bug, I checked my MacBook Pro. Worked fine without update; I let update come through and find the adjustment brush "bug" is intermittent. When it occurs, however, I always see the larger "box" area, and the adjustment brush ultimately affects my entire image.
Anyone else experiencing this? Adobe support insists it's a Mac issue. Thanks!

Same problem (rectangular areas) + others under Windows. The adjustment brush and the clone / heal tool have been totally broken in LR 3.2. You're not alone. See this thread. I have filed a bug report. No answer until now.

  • Camera Raw v8.7.1 Adjustment Brush Problem

I’m using Adobe Bridge and my problem is in Adobe Camera Raw 8.7 and 8.7.1 itself. The Adjustment Brush cursor clicked position and the actual area that will be painted is not in the same area. As you can see the picture shown below, the actual painted area is being offset about one cm away from the cursor clicked position. Only the Adjustment Brush is affected. What's more, the cursor is larger than usual and the color changes to black instead of white. Hope someone can help to give a solution or hopefully Adobe can fix the problem.

Another user has the same issue, I recommend submitting a bug report. Re: Is this a bug or a flaw in my install?
You might try rolling back to 8.6 an see if that helps: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 8.6

  • Lightroom 5 Adjustment Brush Problem?

When I want to use my adjustment brush, I do not have the second circle show up to show where it has taken the adjustment from the photo. Is there a way to fix this? I was able to use it before and didn't have a problem. But I haven't used the program in a while. If anyone can help me with this that would be awesome.

When I am advising on weird adjustment brush problems I always say - Update your Mouse and Tablet drivers to the latest version.  Update your video card to the latest driver.  If neither of those fix it, then try resetting the preference file: Resetting (or 'Trashing') the Lightroom Preferences file - Lightroom Forums

  • Graduated filter and Adjustment brush always use "last used effect"

In my workfow I mostly use opposite effects in the Graduated filter and Adjustment brush.
Lightroom maintains "least used effect" even when changing tools.
Is it possible that each tool retains its last used effect?
In my workflow I mostly use opposite effects when using Adjustment brush en gradient filter. Changing the effects wastes a lot of time when editing hundreds of images.

I agree that it would be nice if the individual tools remembered their own last used preset.
Unfortunately LR does not work that way.

  • Adjustment Brush shows mask but not effect

When I try to brush in an effect with the Adjustment Brush, all I see is the red mask that is created, not the effect. When I click 'Close' I see the effect, but can't see any real time adjustments while editing it. If I hover over the effect circle (which has a black center), the brush changes to some sort of double arrow pointer, but clicking on it has no effect.

Hit "O" to or "Shift-O" to shut off or change the color of the mask overlay.

  • Adjustment Brush Problem in LR2.1

When I try to use the adjustment brush for any type of adjustment, all I get is a darkening overlay on my photo, as though I was drawing some kind of dirty grey quick mask. EG: soften skin - no change to the skin just a semi-transparent grey where I have brushed.
I am pretty new to using this brush, but I am pretty sure I have used it before without a problem. Have I changed some setting? I can use all the adjustments globally but cannot apply them with the brush.

    Robbie,
Hit the "O" key to turn the overlay off and on. Shift+O toggles between available overlay colors.

  • Lightroom 4 adjustment brush has little effect

I am using Lightroom 4 because my Mac is on OSX 10.6.8. As I use it today I'm seeing that the adjustment brush is having little effect. I'm trying to bring areas in shadow up a bit, but there's almost no change. The images shows what should be creating a substantial adjustment and it's almost invisible. Even retroactively sliding the exposure control fully up does just about nothing. Similar lack of effectiveness with other controls, like Contrast. The images are DNG converted/imported from NEF (Nikon D7000) by Lightroom.  I have reset, relaunched and restarted. Suggestions?

Yes, thank you. I actually figured it out and was having difficulty deleting my post. Thanks again.
