Adjustment Brush, External Editor and Export Version

hello, I am considering switching from lightroom to Aperture but I am having a major issue:
I am working on .DNG files. I apply all the adjustments that I need, then either send the image to PSCS4 (I tried both tiff and PSD), or export it through the export version command. In both cases all adjustments are applied BUT the brushes. Thy just vanish. When I edit with PSCS4 this appears clearly in aperture browser, because I can see the edited DNG having the adjustment brushes, whereas the .tiff or .psd that was sent to PS does not...
Any clues? Many thanks
PS: I am using aperture 3.0.2 and macosx 10.6.3

Go through the Apple-recommended trouble-shooting steps.  At the least, run "repair database".  My guess is that you'll end up having to delete your user prefs as well.

  • External Editor and Export Preferences failing

I'm unable to set an External Photo Editor in the prefernces pane.  When I hit the "Choose" button it greys out for a moment; nothing happens; and then it returns with no change.  In addition, I'm not able to Export any photo - Original or Version.

  • I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

    Kumar,
Exportable version worksheet is something whose data can be exported( for example to excel sheet).
This query version worksheet is something which basically lumps like info together.

  • External editors and file types

    Hi,
I have just started using Aperture, so far very pleased but have some questions so thought I would ask the experts.
    1. I have selected Elements 10 as an external editor, when I select to edit aperture creates a PSD file and starts Element 10 but does not open the file to be edited. I then have problems finding the file on my iMac.
    2. Once I have found the file and edited it, if I save the file it places a modified PSD file back in the original folder but the PSD file is massive is there any other way to edit and keep in JPG format
    3. The reason to edit in Elements is so I can crop to specific print sizes and ensure the image is 300 dpi. I can see in Aperture how to crop to a size but I need the result to be at 300dpi as the printer company I use will re-crop to give 300 dpi.
Thanking you in advance for any help you can give me and apologise for being a little greedy with three questions

    For PSE try
    http://barbarabrundage.com/2011/10/05/adobe-hide-and-seek-setting-pse-10-as-exte rnal-editor/
Point the Editor to "Applications>Adobe Photoshop Elements 11>Support Files>Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor"
    2. Once I have found the file and edited it, if I save the file it places a modified PSD file back in the original folder but the PSD file is massive is there any other way to edit and keep in JPG format
Sorry, no. When you use an external Editor, you can only use tiff or PSD as format. Aperture will use the best lossless format. If you want jpeg, export the edited version as jpeg and reimport it.
    3. The reason to edit in Elements is so I can crop to specific print sizes and ensure the image is 300 dpi. I can see in Aperture how to crop to a size but I need the result to be at 300dpi as the printer company I use will re-crop to give 300 dpi.
You can specify the 300dpi in the export preset, when you are exporting from Aperture, if the printer company insist.
In the Export Panel set the the selector for the preset to "Edit" and then select 300 dpi in the panel.

  • When using Photoshop Elements 9 as external editor my iPhoto version does not update

I am using Photoshop Elements 9 as an external editor in iPhoto V9.4.2
My photo's are Raw and they open in Elements fine for me to edit. When I go to save or exit I have problems. I get options to choose from - I am assuming that saving them as JPEG now they are edited is the best choice. However it shows me a file location where it will be saved and this is not the iPhoto libary. Even so, I save them where PSE wants to and when I go back to them in iPhoto they are not shown as edited (either in preview thumbnail or full version and regardless of which folder I look at them from). I shut iPhoto down and re-open and still they are not changed. I have watched the Adobe lesson on this and it is identical right up to the point of 'saving'. I have read other question on this and followed some advice but not getting the desired result of showing up in iPhoto still.
    Thank you.

Are you using PSE and saving the edit as described below?
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.

  • How to tack and export versions.

As the title says I can't figure out a smooth way to export a serie of versions (to be burned or mailed)that exist besides the masters in a project. When I select all the images and ask for "export versions" it doesn't work like that: the masters are exported too Also, when I try to select manualy with a \ they are tacked with a 5 stars rating. I don't understand that either. Could somebody help me out?

There isn't one built in, but copy the following into Script Editor. In Aperture, open all the Stacks and select the last image. Then run the script.
    tell application "Aperture" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    if UI elements enabled then
    tell process "Aperture"
    repeat 10 times
    keystroke "\" using command down
    delay 2
    key code 123
    delay 1
    end repeat
    end tell
    else
    tell application "System Preferences"
    activate
set current pane to pane "com.apple.preference.universalaccess"
display dialog "UI element scripting is not enabled. Check \"Enable access for assistive devices\""
    end tell
    end if
    end tell

  • External Editor and File Names

When I am in Aperture, I do the Open in External Editor to open Photoshop. I then make my changes to the image, and press save then close the file in Photoshop. Now back in Aperture the new image shows up, but it has a new name! I need to keep the same file number! What can I do?
    Kevin Hawkins

If I change the file names by hand, will this break any projects that use those clips?
Yes, it is best to do this before starting your project.
If so, is there a way to rename the .dv files without breaking the projects? I'd be interested in >replacing the time with a description of the clip, for example, yet leaving the date alone.
Best way is to name your Events with a descriptive name. I usually name it with a description and a reference to the source. e.g. Gail's 3rd Birthday - DV 023
Also, you can Keyword clips, which is more powerful than naming clips.
    [See this Video Tutorial|http://www.apple.com/findouthow/movies/imovie08.html#tutorial=tag]
Does changing the date of the clips inside iMovie (by selecting the clip and adjusting the date and >time manually) impact the file name? Or is once the clip is imported the file name stays constant >(unless changed manually)?
Once imported, stays constant - unless changed manually.

  • How do I use the adjustment brush to mask and not turn my item green?

I have shot some products for my web site.  I need completely white backgrounds. I have tried to mask the product and lighten the whites, but when I click done, my product has turned very green.
Why?  How do you use the brush?  Also, where is the invert to make this easier on me?
Kind of urgent, I need to get these items on my site already.
I know the answer is simple... I just don't know what it is.
    Thanks

Have you tried without the adjustment brush, by simply adjusting white balance from the basic tab in develop?
Click on the eye dropper tool and then click on a neutral gray color. Use the background if it is neutral rather than white. You may need to keep selecting the eye dropper to click in a few different places for best results.
If you decide to use the adjustment brush you can show or hide the mask. Uncheck the mask when you have finished painting; then use the sliders, starting with tint and temperature.

  • External editors and read-only folders

I'm trying to use LR4 to work on NEF images I'd imported from a read-only directory. While regular LR4 editing works, using an external editor doesn't because LR4 insists on trying to write a file into that read-only directory. Is there a way to persuade LR4 to put the files it uses to communicate with external editors somewhere else? I intentionally want to keep my NEF directories read-only because they're synced with other programs (which would get upset by LR4 sneaking extra files in there) and because I don't want to accidentally alter anything there.

    Not for secondary editors.
Only the primary Photoshop CSx can open a file wihtout creating it first. Then tiy ba use Save As from Photoshop to choose another location.

  • Tried to use PixelMator as default external editor but iPhoto has only final cut pro as external editor and won't let me change?

I tried to set up Pixelmator as external iPhoto editor bot only option in Preferences> advanced> edit photos is iPhoto or Final Cut Pro?

You have previously set FCP as the external, editor - in the iPhoto preferences select FCP again and a window will open for you to find and select Pixelmator - if that a photo editor ?

  • Just upgraded to PS CS5 from CS3 and LR will not recognize CS5 as external editor

I just upgraded from PS CS3 to CS5 then uninstalled CS3.  LR 2.7 is not recognizing PS (CS5) as the default external editor and I don't get the "edit as smart object in PS", "Open as layers in Photoshop", etc… options  when I right-click an image and select "edit in" as they are now greyed out.  I've tried to repair LR and reinstall but nothing makes it recognize PS CS5 as the default external editor.  Any ideas?  Thx in advance.

I ended up reinstalling CS5 and that solved the problem with one exception.  It is now the default external editor and I have the option to export to PS as a smart object - However, I do not have the options to export to PS in layers or export to PS as Photomerge or Export to PS as HDR.  I did have these options with CS3.

  • External Editor versions

If I create a "new version" or "new from master", AP2.1 appends "Version x" to the end of the version name. But when I use external editor (PSE) it doesn't. Can this be changed to add "Version x" to the version sent to PSE?

Yes, it should only delete the edited version if you have the edited version and only the edited version selected and not as just the main selection with the others in the stack selected. It should also delete any versions made from the edited master, but should leave the original master and it's versions intact.
I just tested this on my system and it did as expected.
Just take a sample image and import it with the sole intention of opening with the external editor and then selecting just the externally edited and deleting it. I know you're sure you had just the edited master selected, but are you sure sure?

  • Can't export images edited with external editor

Images edited within iPhoto '11 export to the desktop without a problem but images that have been edited with an external editor (Photoshop CS4) will not export. The following dialog come up:
    Exporting...
    Unable to create /Users/<name>/Desktop/
    Cancel
Don't know if this has any bearing but the problem is on my wife's iMac, not my MacPro.
Any clues to the source of the problem will be appreciated.

Thanks TD for your input. While I could not get the rebuild to work (it would show 97% done then hang up), it helped me isolate the problem. I ended up deleting all the images that were edited by PS CS4 then tried to do the rebuild again. Still no luck. I then opened the file sans the edited PS images and it worked.
I then edited one of the images using PS CS4 as the external editor and that worked. I then exported the image to the desktop and that also worked. The only think I can think of is that the original edits were done in iPhoto 9.0 and I have since updated it to 9.1. Whatever - it works and the only loss were some edits on a dozen or so family candid shots.
Your help in getting me headed is most appreciated.
