Adjustment Brush/Saturation

Normally I can reduce the color saturation to zero in parts of my photo by using the adjustment brush with the amount set to -100.  Today this is not working...I'm not sure if I've changed some settings but if someone could please help me get it back. At -100 it removing some of the color but not all.

The density was not....it seems to be fine now...thanks so much!

  • Adjustment brush after HSL operation

    Hi,
I just desaturated all colours but one with HSL (all except red in my case). Now I want to desaturate remaining PARTS of the image with the adjustment brush (saturation slider to the left). Turns out it does not work this way.
    What am I doing wrong?

So you want to desaturate parts of the remaining red colour with the brush?
I just tried it and it worked (LR 3.2).

  • Adjustment Brush is painting bright red when it is set with saturation at -100

Anyone have any idea why it is not removing the color like I am asking to program to do?

So it turns out that the exposure was also turne down to -4 and I missed this.  Sometimes the answer is right in front of your face but I had
double clicked effect numerous times but somehow this was part of the problem.
I think inially I had the Brush overlay on (which I never use) and then after about an hour of fiddling around I posted the question.
You hit the nail on the head with the Overlay but then when I must have reacctivated the adjustment brush I must have some home
turned the exposure down to -4 and thus when I turned off the overly it was coming up as black.
thank you for all of your help.  I have used LR since 2005 and this really rattled my cage.
    Cheers

  • I have imported a color picture and trying to use the adjustment brush to turn the background black and white and it isn't working.  I have Lightroom 5.  Any suggestions?

Hello - I have Lightroom 5.  I have imported a color photo.  I am trying to use the Adjustment Brush to change the background to Black and White and leave a portion of the photo in color.  When I begin painting the photo with the Saturation at -100 I don't see any changes to the photo.  I push the "O" key and still nothing.  I have tried to reset the photo, restarted Lightroom and still nothing.  Please help.

Set Flow and Density of the brush to 100
Reduce it where you want the effect to blend.

  • Lightroom 4 Adjustment Brush Crashed

    Hi,
Was editing an image in the develop module, applied the adjustment brush for saturation to the sky area, then pressed the "O" key to see the brushed area and Lightroom 4 crashed. The adjustment brush was set for 100% flow and auto masking with only the saturation slider adjusted to +12. I restarted Lightroom and brought up the same image and went to apply an adjustment brush, but as soon as I clicked on the brush Lightroom locked up and I got the following weirdness on my screen:
Kind of strange - thought you might like to see it.
Now it seems that attempting to do anything with this particular image will cause Lightroom 4 to lockup and display the weird little box. However, I am able to edit other images.

Ok, after further testing I have found the following:
    1) If I close all other applications, I don't get the weird little black box that looks like a media player. I had Outlook 2007 open previously.
    2) Any use of the adjustment brush fails to set an anchor point and causes Lightroom to stop responding.
    3) Any use of the "O" key to show the brush strokes will cause Lightroom to hang.
    4) Any adjustments have a noticeable lag between making the adjustment and seeing it on the screen.
As mentioned earlier, my system is:
Windows 7 64 bit with all updates applied
Intel Core2 Dual CPU running 2.6Mhz
    4GB memory
    Nvidia GeForce Graphics card
    Over 1TB of disk space
Lightroom 3.6 running amazingly well for me - no lag time unless the file size exceeds 1.5GB which most of the time my images are smaller than that.
Let me know if there is any additional information you need, or things you would like me to check.

  • Adjustment Brush Problem

    Dear all,
I have problem with my lightroom application. The edited point after using adjustment brush didn't appeared after i locked the editing. Its hard to change the editing because the point not apeared and i cant controlmy editing after dat because of the point is not show in the image. Howevwer the problem is not appeared in the graduating filter or spot adjustment. How can i solved this..
    Thanks for your help

When brushing, holding down the Alt key will allow you to erase instead of adding to your brush selection. Holding down the Ctrl/Cmd key will put you in AutoMask mode if it’s not selected, or turn it off temporarily if it is. The two keys can be used together.
Also, to the right of the Effect selection (under Edit) is a little rectangle (two squares side by side) that switch between ‘basic’ and ‘advanced’ mode. By switching to advanced mode more than one effect (Exposure, Brightness, Saturation, etc.) can be added to the same selection. Having done multiple effects, switching back to basic mode will allow proportional adjustment of all of the effects made.

  • Override preset setting with adjustment brush?

I used Creative B&W low contrast preset to give an image my neighbor's white cat a high key B&W look. I would like to use the adjustment brush to restore the color of the cat's eyes. I thought raising saturation would do the trick as the preset reduces the saturation to 0. Using the adj brush doesn't seem to do anything to the cat's eyes.
You can see the image here..
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    LR 2.4

At a guess , the preset may also have switched theTreatment to B&W, in which case the saturation in a brush will have no effect. You would have to do this the other way around and brush on the de saturated parts of the image. Or take the easy way out and use PS and masks and layers.

  • Adjustment Brushes not working (3.0 & 3.2)

While processing some images the other night, using the adjustment brushes, burn, 3 large white squares appeared on the image for a few moments (5 seconds or so) before disappearing.
Since then, the adjustment brushes have no effect what so ever on my images?
    Thanks
    James

    Hi James
After selecting the Adjustment Brush press O (for overlay) so show the area being masked.
You can then move the sliders e.g. exposure, saturation, clarity etc.) to adjust the masked area (usually shown as a red selection).
You can press O repeatedly to toggle the mask on and off.

  • Lightroom adjustment brush inconsistent with Camera Raw

I love Lightroom's adjustment brushes, but I find it annoying that I can't use them to take saturation all the way to monochrome, even with the saturation slider turned down all the way. Today, I noticed that in Camera Raw 5.4, the same thing is NOT true - you can remove color completely with an adjustment brush.
Surprised at this difference, I wondered what would happen when I loaded the ACR-adjusted file back into Lightroom. Lo and behold, Lightroom showed the result of the adjustment brush the same way as ACR, with all color removed. Excellent!
But what would happen if I changed that adjustment brush in Lightroom? Would it "forget" what I had done in ACR and revert to its normal behavior? No, it continued to behave just as it had in ACR. But in the same photo, a brush created in Lightroom did not behave the same way. So clearly, it was something to do with which program created the brush.
Then I took a look at my XMP file, and it became (somewhat) clear what's going on. This is one of the XMP attributes for the brush created in ACR:
         <crs:MaskValue>1.000000</crs:MaskValue>
And here's the same attribute for the brush created in Lightroom:
         <crs:MaskValue>0.375000</crs:MaskValue>
The obvious next question is, what happens if you change MaskValue from 0.375000 to 1.000000? Answer: The brush  starts behaving like an ACR brush.
Now, this is kind of cool. I can get the behavior I want in Lightroom, by editing the XMP file by hand. On the other hand, editing XMP files isn't really my favorite thing. Is there some setting in Lightroom that can be used to achieve a MaskValue of 1.000000 for adjustment brushes? I couldn't find one, but hey, there are a lot of settings...

Ian, thank you! It was indeed Density that did the trick. I mistakenly thought Density had nothing to do with it, because you have to set it before you create a new brush stroke. (Each individual stroke of a particular adjustment brush can have a different Density value, along with the other Brush attributes like Size.) So I was changing it for my existing brush strokes, foolishly expecting it to work like the Effect sliders, and seeing no effect.
Jao, my flow was set to 100 all along, so I don't think that was my problem. It really seems to have been Density.

  • Camera Raw (Adjustment Brush - How do you select NO color?)

With the Adjustment Brush selected, there are six control channel parameters listed:
    Exposure
    Brightness
    Contrast
    Saturation
    Clarity
    Sharpness
    Color
The Color control channel shows a color swatch, which displays the current color parameter setting:
When this parameter is set to no color, the swatch appears as a rectangle with two diagonal lines. It looks something like this:
How do I set the color parameter to no color?

    Thanks for the quick response.
When I select white (from the Color Picker), the color control parameter's color swatch becomes white, like this:
After some experimentation I found that "no color" can be selected by choosing white with a saturation of 0 in the Color Picker.
That combination produces "no color" and the color control parameter's color swatch appears like this -- showing the two diagonal lines:
I appreciate your help which got me on the right track. Thanks.

  • Adjustment brush with exposure setting cancels noise reduction

    Hello,
I just noticed the following problem:
    1) Camera Raw 6.5; Bridge CS5 (4.0.5.11); Mac OS X 10.6.8; Mac Pro 3,1; Dual Quad-Core Xeon; 8GB RAM.
    2) Start with a noisy raw file (mine is from a Canon 5D II).
    3) Apply Noise Reduction (Luminance:30; Lum Detail:75; Lum Contrast:0; Color:25; Color Detail:50).
    4) Go to Adjustment Brush and set a non-zero Exposure value.
    5) Apply brush to image and notice the Noise Reduction effects disappear (noise returns).
    6) Click Clear All button to clear Adjustment Brush and Noise Reduction works again.
This seems to only happen with Adjustment Brushes with a non-zero Exposure value (applying brightness or other settings don't seem to produce the problem).
    Anyone else seeing this?
    Thanks!

    Richard (and others),
Yes, very good idea to check that. The problem does indeed get applied to the full sized, opened image as well as to the display previews. After working with this more, I now notice that I was wrong to say that the entire noise reduction is cancelled - rather it "changes", sometimes subtly, sometimes more dramatically depending on what the noise reduction settings are set to. Further, how dramatic the "changes" appear depend greatly on the preview zoom (the changes are more subtle at 100%, but it can look like the noise reduction is completely turned off at 50% and 66%).
Now I realize that the noise reduction does not ordinarily display at all preview sizes (especially smaller ones), but this is different. At preview sizes where it does normally get applied, applying an adjustment brush with any non-zero exposure value (even just +0.05) can have the appearance that the NR is completely turned off for the whole image. Simply nudging the exposure value back to zero brings all the noise reduction back.
Also, to be clearer and avoid confusion for others, the change in noise I'm seeing is not localized to just the brushed spot. Obviously if one increases exposure, you'd expect to potentially see more noise. Instead, what I'm seeing happens to the entire image, even if I simply paint a single small brush dot, say in a far corner. Having the image change globally in response to painting a small spot with the adjustment brush cannot be a correct result. Further, this does not happen with any of the other adjustment brush settings like brightness, contrast or saturation. There must be something unique about the exposure setting that perhaps introduces a new step into the processing pipeline, and this step is affecting the entire image.
In any case, the problem only seems to be an issue in somewhat extreme cases and is less noticeable at 100% (and the finally opened image). It's more just annoying when previews are generated for viewing in Bridge, for example.
I suppose one alternative might be to rob a bank and go buy one of those new 1D X's. Then maybe I wouldn't have to worry about noise anymore.
    Thanks for the responses!

  • Use Tab to move between adjustment brush settings

This is my second request (in no particular order) related to better keyboard navigation in the develop module (see also Snap exposure adjustment to round number and Tab between panels in develop).
My preferred way to work through the develop panel is to [Tab] and  [Shift]+[Tab] through the adjustments and use the up and down arrows (and occasionally the number pad) to  make changes, adding the shift key for large changes.
Unfortunately, this does not work for moving between fields in either the adjustment brush settings or the graduated filter settings. Instead, moving between settings requires using the mouse to move between each field. I'd really like to be able to use the same keyboard shortcuts throughout the entire develop module.
    Thanks!

I just double-checked, using and LR 3.2 on Win7 x64, pressing [Tab] cycles from the last field in a panel back to the first field in the same panel (e.g. Saturation to WB), rather than to the next panel (e.g. Saturation to Highlights), which would be my preferred behaviour. Seems strange that this behaviour would be different between platforms, but it gives me hope that Adobe would be open to changing the Windows version's behaviour.

  • Adjustment Brush - Expanding "Auto Mask" Capabilities

Please expand the "Auto Mask" capability on the "Adjustment Brush".
The "Adjustment Brush" is the most powerful localized adjustment tool - even before the wonderful enhancements in LR4.
However, the "Auto Mask" function is limiting.
In its current state, LR samples a narrow range under the cursor which creates a mask having numerous voids.
Adding a “color range" and "fall off" sliders to the Adjustment Brush's "Auto Mask" would expand the sampling range and therefore the create a smoother soft-edge mask with adjustable tolerance. This would greatly expand the function of this powerful tool.  (see 2 options inserted below)
This is similar to Photoshop's Hue/Saturation: “Specify the range of colors adjusted in the Hue/Saturation adjustment” - (where the two inner vertical sliders define the "color range" and the two outer triangle sliders define the “fall off” (transition) of the color range”)

There is another thread at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4142055 ("soften auto mask"),  where users have also been asking for feathering and an upgrade to the performance and usability of the auto mask.

  • Adjustment Brush Issue

I've been using the adjustment brush for quite sometime, via LR2 and now LR3.  Currently I am using LR3 and it just stopped working all together.  It won't let me update the previous brush strokes made, nor will it make any changes through new brush strokes.  It will place a new pin, but nothing will take effect or become highlighted when I have the arrow over it, like it does the older pins I had set that work.  I've tried turning certain settings off and on again, as many as I can think of and nothing is working.
When it began doing this today though, I did try something that I'm not quite familiar with.  I was trying out the color settings under the brush adjustments and when I tried to go back to using exposure, saturation, etc. it hasn't worked since.  Anyone have an idea as to what I can do to get it working again?

    Never mind .
    Hal

  • Eye Color adjustment brush question

On the adjustment brush when I am using it to change eye color it doesn't change the color at all. I want to change it completely not just lighten it or give it a different tint or hue.
I go to the adjustment brush, turn the saturation all the way down, and then select a color that stands out so that I will be able to tell what I am painting. When I select the color it shows it in the small window in the bottom right side of the adjustment brush "window" thing. The problem is that when I paint it, it doesn't show up at all, it barely even makes a difference no matter which color I select. How do I make it change drastically and completely? Did I accidentally tamper with the settings?
Also, when I use the "plus" and "minus" keys on the keyboard it changes clarity instead of exposure, How do I change it back to exposure?
Thanks for your time. - IZ

Check your Flow setting on the brush (the amount per stroke)
and your Density setting (the limit to how much of your effect (color in your case) settings. If either are very low (under 30 for example) you will have a tough time bulding up paint.
