Adjustment Brush Settings and Masks performance slow + jittery

Are there any tweaks to solve these issues? Takes about 2 seconds to actuate. I know this doesn't seem slow, but when doing hundreds of images it sure puts a bottleneck in the workflow.
Graduated Filter performance not great but acceptable.

Is this the for the first local adjustment of an image, or only after there are a bunch of existing local adjustments?

  • Adjustment Brush - Expanding "Auto Mask" Capabilities

Please expand the "Auto Mask" capability on the "Adjustment Brush".
The "Adjustment Brush" is the most powerful localized adjustment tool - even before the wonderful enhancements in LR4.
However, the "Auto Mask" function is limiting.
In its current state, LR samples a narrow range under the cursor which creates a mask having numerous voids.
Adding a “color range" and "fall off" sliders to the Adjustment Brush's "Auto Mask" would expand the sampling range and therefore the create a smoother soft-edge mask with adjustable tolerance. This would greatly expand the function of this powerful tool.  (see 2 options inserted below)
This is similar to Photoshop's Hue/Saturation: “Specify the range of colors adjusted in the Hue/Saturation adjustment” - (where the two inner vertical sliders define the "color range" and the two outer triangle sliders define the “fall off” (transition) of the color range”)

There is another thread at http://forums.adobe.com/message/4142055 ("soften auto mask"),  where users have also been asking for feathering and an upgrade to the performance and usability of the auto mask.

  • Using control option to adjust brush size and feather

I saw this cool shortcut for adjusting brush size and feather by holding control option and then dragging left right or up down
to adjust the brush but in the video when he clicked and dragged to adjust the brush displayed red while being adjusted and
I can't seem to get the red rubylith to display so I can't see the brush feathering when adjusted.

And whether that works (Photoshop > Preferences > Performance > GPU Settings) depends on your graphic display card (and its driver).

  • Use Tab to move between adjustment brush settings

This is my second request (in no particular order) related to better keyboard navigation in the develop module (see also Snap exposure adjustment to round number and Tab between panels in develop).
My preferred way to work through the develop panel is to [Tab] and  [Shift]+[Tab] through the adjustments and use the up and down arrows (and occasionally the number pad) to  make changes, adding the shift key for large changes.
Unfortunately, this does not work for moving between fields in either the adjustment brush settings or the graduated filter settings. Instead, moving between settings requires using the mouse to move between each field. I'd really like to be able to use the same keyboard shortcuts throughout the entire develop module.
    Thanks!

I just double-checked, using and LR 3.2 on Win7 x64, pressing [Tab] cycles from the last field in a panel back to the first field in the same panel (e.g. Saturation to WB), rather than to the next panel (e.g. Saturation to Highlights), which would be my preferred behaviour. Seems strange that this behaviour would be different between platforms, but it gives me hope that Adobe would be open to changing the Windows version's behaviour.

  • What brush settings and application style would mimic this advertisement?

i'm trying to re-paint this advertisement for practice in photoshop. unfortunately, all the methods i've tried don't achieve the effect. i first thought it was achieved by building up layers of transparency with a brush with slightly soft edges, but that didn't look right. i also can't achieve anything like this with the mixer brush.
the look is very organic and digital at the same time...does anyone have any ideas as to what brush settings and application order might be on the face or how i could achieve this effect?

Hello! Set Angle Jitter to Direction, under shape dynamics in the brushes panel.

  • Lethargic adjustment brush with auto mask on

    Hello everyone ...
I am a new to this forum. I've been hanging out as an observer and have decided to get my feet wet with my first posting.
I'm a wedding photographer and have been a Lightroom user since the first beta release and totally love the program. I am using a mac G5 dual 2.7 with 6 GB of ram. Up until release 1.4 Lightroom has been great.
Release 2.0 has been another story. I have installed all updates including the newly released 2.1. It appears there is still an issue with the adjustment brush. If I use the brush without 'auto mask' the brush flows smoothly. As soon as 'auto mask' is engaged the tool becomes useless. The flow is slow and choppy, plus I have to contend with an almost constant spinning beach ball.
Has anyone else been experiencing this problem? Is there a fix? Or, might this be an issue that Adobe is still working on.
Sorry for the long post, just wanted to introduce myself and any help with this issue would be most appreciated.
    Thanks ... Fred

From the Known Issues sections of the release notes:
    >We are still working on additional methods to improve the performance of the new Localized Correction features.
As you've already observed, leaving the Auto Mask off is the best way of avoiding poor brush performance.

  • Adjustment Brush: Flow and Feather

Not so much a question, as an observation. Maybe it will help somebody.
I'm not a big user of the Adjustment Brush. I tend to use it occasionally for applying Clarity, Highlight Recovery, or applying/removing Sharpening.
I'd never much paid attention to the Flow and Density settings before today, and I certainly never really understood the Flow setting. The Feather setting never seemed to work as expected too. So, I just spent 10 minutes with a 50% grey image and a -2-stop brush, getting to the bottom of it all.
Density is the easiest setting to understand: it's like a percentage limit on effect opacity. So 100 means that your brush can deliver 100% of your chosen settings.
Flow was a little tricker to fathom. I expected Flow to control how fast the "paint" comes off the brush. But, no matter how slowly I move the brush, it doesn't come out any thicker. Maybe Flow is the wrong word. I worked out that you had to paint the same spot several times with a low Flow setting to get full Density. It's like Single Pass Density.
Feather is where I came unstuck. Setting any more than 0 give you a two-circle brush cursor. To me, this suggests that the inner circle is solid, the outer circle is clear, and inbetween is a gradient curve. In reality, the brush paints well outside the outer circle (increasing with Feather amount), and isn't solid at the inner circle either. This explains why I've always gone over the edge with a feathered brush, and why it always looks bloody awful when painting an exposure adjustment. Thank goodness the guys added Highlights to the brush settings.

    Rob Cole wrote:
To be clear (and I think this is what you were saying too): Flow controls amount of paint per unit of time, regardless of brush movement speed..., for example:
flow = 100 -> you'll get full amount of paint instantly, that amount determined by density.
flow = 0 -> there will be zero paint coming out, so not a useful setting.
    flow = 50 -> somewhere in between...
No, that's just it: it's not what I was saying. It is what I expected, but not what I found. Time has nothing to do with it. You can take as long as you like, and no more paint comes off the brush. That was the point I was making, and why I said I thought that "flow" was the wrong word. To me, flow is time-related (volume per second).
'Flow' seems to work by rationing the amount of paint in each stroke. It is only built up by extra strokes.

  • LR4: Adjustment Brush, Viewable Layer Mask

In LR4, when using the adjustment brush, is there a way to always keep the layer mask viewable (the red layer)?  Not just viewable when you hover of the circle.
    Thanks,

Press the letter 'O' on your keyboard to switch the mask on and off again. Or use the little checkbox at the bottom left of the window.

  • After the Ios 6 update, I have lost my Sound for Music, Tweets. i have restored the phone, tried adjusting the settings, and even have Docked and undocked the Iphone 4S, thinking it might be in Dock mode. Headphones work, Dock plays Sounds. Ideas?

Lost Sound after Ios Upgrade to 6.0.1. All worked before upgrade. Has to be a problem with Software upgrade.
    Tried adjusting Settings. Same Problem
    Tried restoring Phone. Same Problem
Read some Forums. Tried suggestions such as buying an Song from ITUNES, Docking and undocking Device. Same Problem
    Ideas?
Sound will be heard  when Docked or through Headphones. Even Volume Bar doesn't appear either when playing music without Headphones or being docked.
Similar to others, this phone worked 100% prior to the Upgrade to Ios 6.0.1

Do you have the mute switch engaged? It's the little slider over the volume buttons on the side. If you can see orange, it's engaged. Slide it the other way.

  • Adjust Color Filter and Masking

I am trying to create a flash transition like seen here
    http://www.loewshotels.com/en/default.aspx
I was wondering how I would go about doing this? I am trying
to create a mask with having the filter for brightness and contrast
to create the same effect? Do you know how to go about doing this?
If I am in the wrong place will someone let me know where I
should go ask? That would be helpful thanks :)
    Thanks

If I copy the original graphic with a gradient, color fill creates a solid colored object. If I change the blending mode of the new object on top to hue, I get a good result. I think I'll use this method from now on...

  • 2.1 and Adjustment Brush Prob Return

Ironically, after having fixed adjustment brush lag and slider sluggishness by maximizing performance in the Nvidia 3d settings, installing 2.1 has caused the problem to return.
The problem was completely resolved before. I could rapidly paint large areas of D300 images with repeated strokes, or with one extended very rapid uninterrupted stroke back and forth across an area stretching from side to side and representing about one third of the screen.
Before upgrading there was absolutely no lag or subsequent sluggishness in the amount slider no matter how hard I tried to induce it. Now, the slider sluggishness is as bad as before.
I have tested this by resetting half a dozen of the same images that I worked the brush on prior to the upgrade to RC 2.1 and performing the same actions with the brush as described above. I have 2.0 installed on the other side of my dual boot windows Intel 9550 Quad and there is no lag on that side with the same images and adjustment brush use described above.
There is no doubt that the problem is back.
Has anyone who had 2.0 adjustment brush problems tested 2.1 yet?

LR2.1 not stable for me. XPS630, 4G, XP Pro, nVidia 8600,
    LR 2 worked fine.
Adjustment brush (using Wacom or mouse) doesn't lift reliably and leaves streaks.
Brush at times will activate zoom instead of painting an adjustment.
Brush won't stop editing session - can't start new brush - no edit control point for previous adjustment brushes
Have restarted LR2.1 numerous times, rebooted, etc.
I'm going back to 2.0 tomorrow.

  • Adjustment brush auto mask broken for 32bit TIFF image

    Hello,
I am using Lightroom 4.2 (updated today) on Windows 7 64bit. I have an issue using the adjustment brush with the option "Auto Mask" within a 32 bit TIFF file: the Auto Mask magic there does not work.
I've created 32 bit TIFF files using the "merge to HDR Pro in Photoshop" workflow, where the resulting TIFF is automatically added back to Lightroom. There, I edit the TIFF just in the same way as I edit any other picture in Lightroom. Some of my TIFF files have very clear edges with high contrast. Example:
I assume you agree with me that the adjustment brush Auto Mask must be able to detect this particular edge between the blue sky and the almost black wall of a building. However, when I use the adjustment brush on this edge (no feather, 100 density and flow, show selected mask overlay in green), it does not detect the transition:
When I do the same in one of the RAW pictures that contributed to the TIFF above, Auto Mask works as expected:
I tried this with various edges in various TIFF and RAW files. In the RAW files, basically all edges are detected, while  the Auto Mask feature entirely fails in my TIFFs. I've first observed this in Lightroom 4.1. Then I updated to 4.2 which did not change the behavior.
Is there something I can do wrong? Note that in this tutorial: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-complete-picture-with-julieanne-kost/quick-tip-creating-32bi t-hdr-images-in-lr-41/ Julieanne Kost is doing exactly this: first she merges a set of pictures to a HDR TIFF and then she uses the adjustment brush with Auto Mask in the resulting TIFF. In the video it looks like the edge detection works properly for her.
    Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks!

    +1 vote.
Auto-mask has great potential, but is not quite there yet...
I'd like to see a little more control - what exactly you are trying to mask, and what not... - ya now: some tolerances/thresholds for color and luminosity and texture... - and maybe the ability to enhance the edges after the fact.

  • Issue with Clone Tool and Adjustment Brush in LR5.3

If I export a .TIFF from LR5.3 in which I've used the Clone Tool or Adjustment Brush Tool and then load the .TIFF up in Photoshop CS2 to perform further edits, I can't save the file to a .JPG - I get a '...program error...' message during the save.  If I turn off the tool and export the file from LR5 again, I can do the edits in Photoshop and save it as a .jpg.  The same thing will happen in Capture NX2 trying to save the LR5 exported .TIFF to .JPG.    Has anyone else experienced this and are there any workarounds?

    ***UPDATE*** 3/7/14
Apparently no one has experienced the issue as I posted above, but in case anyone is interested, I have discovered a workaround.  For some reason, the issue manifests itself when I export the TIFF with the option 'Metadata - Include All Metadata'.  If I change the Metadata option to the 'Copyright Only' or 'Copyright & Contact Info Only' I am able to open the TIFF in Photoshop, make edits as needed, and then save as a JPG.  Apparently LR5 is doing something weird with the Metadata file header that Photoshop and Capture NX2 doesn't like under certain circumstances.

  • Invert ACR Adjustment Brush Mask?

Is it possible to invert a mask created with the ACR adjustment brush?
I want to make an adjustment to everything except what I paint with the adjustment brush (with auto mask turned on).  I know how to invert a selection in Photoshop, but don't know if it is possible in ACR.  I'm using ACR version 8.2. on W7

Jeff,  Thank you for the clarification.  Hopefully Adobe will add the functionality some day.  Theoretically, I'd prefer to do most of my lighting adjustments in ACR for a number of reasons, but the ACR tools seem generally less polished than Photoshop.  The ACR Adjustment Brush in auto mode seems easier to use than the Photoshop selection tools like the Quick Selection Tool, but not being able to invert is a significant handicap.
