Adjustment Brush Weirdness in LR2

I'm making pretty liberal use of the adjustment brush in a series of photos in LR2, and I'm getting the weirdest thing: as I leaf through my gallery and make these adjustments, then go back and view previously adjusted images, I'm getting a whole lot of retouched areas showing up in images THAT I DID NOT PUT THERE. This is the weirdest thing. The Adjustment brush mask shows lots of random spots where it looks like the adjustment brush has been used, but I didn't put them there. And they keep showing up in different images. It's getting kind of ridiculous because they keep showing up in random images without my putting them there, and it's wasting a lot of my time. Has anybody experienced this?

Two possibilites for this happening. The first is that you haved had multiple images selected and applied the Sync Settings command. Alternatively, you have had multiple images selected and Auto Sync enabled while applying the brush with th result that every selected image will have the brush adjustment applied. I suggest you select a few images in Develop module then go to the two buttons located at the bottom of the Develop adjustments panel. If the left button is set to Auto Sync then this is very likley the source of your problem. I suggest that you switch it off to avoid the problem reoccuring. With Lr2 you need to hold down the Ctrl/Cmd key while clicking on the button

  • Adjustment Brush Problem in LR2.1

When I try to use the adjustment brush for any type of adjustment, all I get is a darkening overlay on my photo, as though I was drawing some kind of dirty grey quick mask. EG: soften skin - no change to the skin just a semi-transparent grey where I have brushed.
I am pretty new to using this brush, but I am pretty sure I have used it before without a problem. Have I changed some setting? I can use all the adjustments globally but cannot apply them with the brush.

    Robbie,
Hit the "O" key to turn the overlay off and on. Shift+O toggles between available overlay colors.

  • 2.1 and Adjustment Brush Prob Return

Ironically, after having fixed adjustment brush lag and slider sluggishness by maximizing performance in the Nvidia 3d settings, installing 2.1 has caused the problem to return.
The problem was completely resolved before. I could rapidly paint large areas of D300 images with repeated strokes, or with one extended very rapid uninterrupted stroke back and forth across an area stretching from side to side and representing about one third of the screen.
Before upgrading there was absolutely no lag or subsequent sluggishness in the amount slider no matter how hard I tried to induce it. Now, the slider sluggishness is as bad as before.
I have tested this by resetting half a dozen of the same images that I worked the brush on prior to the upgrade to RC 2.1 and performing the same actions with the brush as described above. I have 2.0 installed on the other side of my dual boot windows Intel 9550 Quad and there is no lag on that side with the same images and adjustment brush use described above.
There is no doubt that the problem is back.
Has anyone who had 2.0 adjustment brush problems tested 2.1 yet?

LR2.1 not stable for me. XPS630, 4G, XP Pro, nVidia 8600,
    LR 2 worked fine.
Adjustment brush (using Wacom or mouse) doesn't lift reliably and leaves streaks.
Brush at times will activate zoom instead of painting an adjustment.
Brush won't stop editing session - can't start new brush - no edit control point for previous adjustment brushes
Have restarted LR2.1 numerous times, rebooted, etc.
I'm going back to 2.0 tomorrow.

  • Useless adjustment brush in LR2 on Vista

Does anyone have a solution as to why the adjustment brush just plainly does not work right in Vista? I have repaired the program, reinstalled the program, all to no avail. Very frustrated at this point. All the other features do seem to work correctly, but this is driving me nuts. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. (I expected more from Adobe than this) Thanks

The adjustment brush is slow and sluggish for a lot of users--the forum is full of such posts.
Does it work well--yes, on some systems. It was absolutely pitless for me, UNTIL I moved LR to our fastest machine, an Intel 9550, 4gigs Ram,1300 FSB,Sata 2 and Firewire 800 drives with an Nvidia 8600GT set to maximize performance and minimize quality in the 3D section of the Nvidia control panel.
I should add that this is on a machine used for productivity only--no games, no internet, cache and VM on separate physical drives, LR2 on non boot drive.
It took a lot of tweaking and experimentation to get to the point where it will smoke! I could not get the brush to work real time without lag and sluggish sliders on any of my other machines--largely, in retrospect, I think because they had Video cards that did not allow setting the card to high performance as opposed to high quality.
My view is that the real culprit is to be found in the Display Card settings on most machines. LR2 was fast on this high end machine, but the brush was sluggish until I followed a suggestion in a recent thread on Nvidia card solutions and set it to maximize performance instead of quality and saved that as an Nvidia preset for LR.
I suggest you look at your display card control for a possible solution. Take a look at this thread:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b65d9c/30
The larger question is a technical one perhaps Eric can answer: is there any way to write code to overcome this Video card interaction problem--Nvidia cards are ubiquitous. At the least Adobe could issue a possible warning that a potential problem exists.

  • Weird blocks on image after using adjustment brush in ACR

A group of people took an online webinar yesterday.  The instructor is a heavy Adjustment Brush user, in LightRoom.  After taking the class, many of the students in the group are reporting the appearance of weird blocks on images, after using the Adjustment Brush - both in LR and in ACR.  It is also happening to me.  I am a heavy Photoshop and ACR user - never before have I seen this.  The only thing I'm doing differently is using the Adjustment Brush (because of the webinar class, as it was part of the instructor's core teachings).  What could be causing this?

There was an adjustment brush bug in older versions of ACR. I first reported it here, and Eric Chan acknowledged the problem. It went away in future releases. Sorry, I can't remember what version numbers were involved.

  • LR2 Adjustment Brush on a tif?

I open a raw file in LR2, then use the Open in PS CS3 command to apply a plug in filter that is only usable in PS (here, Alien Skin Exposure 2), then save it as a tif, then re-open it in LR2.....can I then use the adjustment brush to further work on it?
I don't seem to be able to.
    TIA.

    Found the problem.
The Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 2.1 RC does not work on a GS image when the Auto Mask is enabled.
Here is the procedure to verify this behavior:
    1. With image selected in Lightroom's Develop Module choose Photo > Edit in > Edit in Photoshop CS3 (default settings 8-bit etc.)
    2. In Photoshop convert the image to grayscale. Choose Image > Mode > Grayscale. When asked about discarding color information say yes.
    3. Save the file (I saved as an 8-bit TIFF)
    4. In LR 2.1 select the Adjustment Brush with Feather and Flow at 50 and Density at 90 and Auto Mask enabled. Use Exposure Effect with the slider set to -4.00.
    5. Paint several stokes on the image. The Adjustment Pin appears but no effect is applied and no mask appears even if the 'o' key is used.
    6. Click the Auto Mask checkbox to disable Auto Mask and paint in another part of the photo.
    7. The Effect and its mask now appear where the second set of strokes are applied but the brushstrokes made with the Auto Mask set are still not there.
It isn't a Silver Efex Pro problem because it also occurs when an ordinary image is converted to GS by PS CS3.
Something in Auto Mask prevents it from working on a GS Image.
This problem should occur with any image but for the record the original file I used was a Nikon raw file (NEF).
Workaround: Until Adobe fixes this problem you cannot use the Adjustment Brush with Auto Mask enabled.

  • LR2 Adjustment Brush not working?

I just got Lightroom 2 and have tried over and over to use the adjustment brush, but I haven't seen ANY results. A black circle with silver lining shows up where I click the picture with the brush. I have heard that clicking "O" makes the adjustment show up, but I've tried it and nothing happens. So, help! Am I missing a simple step or something??

    Hi Emily,
One of the mask overlays that you get when pressing 'O' and shift + 'O' is clear and makes it impossible to see the results.
Press O to make the mask active and then press Shift O a few times to cycle through the masks.
If you put the exposure at -2 you should see the area darkening as you brush.

  • LR2.7, cannot use the Adjustment Brush

I choose a photo, select Develop module and choose the Adjustment brush. Then select +2 exposure but in only see the Hand/Zoom tools when I move the mouse over the image. How do I get the brush tool to display?

The red is a mask so you can see where you have brushed
To turn it on and off, Press the letter O

  • Adjustment brush sometimes gives blotchy results

I noticed this during the public beta of Lightroom 2 but figured either it was me or they'd fix it in the public release. Well, today I see the "problem" if it is a problem is still there, so perhaps it's me, in which case I'd be grateful for some help.
Here's the problem: The localized adjustment brush produces great results sometimes, and at other times, the results are so bad that I have no choice but to delete the mask and give up.
Hard to provide verbal examples, but I'll try to suggest what I see.
I have a photo that shows a couple of people water skiing on a lake. Photo was taken from the tow boat. Sun was a little behind the two skiers so their faces are somewhat in the shadows. I used the brush to increase exposure of their faces and the results were quite satisfactory. But when I tried to use a new brush to increase the exposure of the stand of trees and houses on the distant shore, the results were awful, especially when I zoomed in. The exposure was increased but there were ugly splotches of pixels throughout the masked area. And while there had been a wee bit of chromatic aberration visible in the line where the tree tops met the distant sky, after the brush was applied (with auto-mask ON), it was MUCH much worse.
Are there some guidelines about when the brush is a good idea and when it's not? Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks in advance,
    Will

    Joe Klien,
You obviously haven't worked with NX2 enough to even make a judgment on its advanced local corrections through a set of u_point tools, including a selection u-point, gradient, paintbrush, region mask defining tools, etc, in addition to the color u_points, all of which are certainly more flexible and faster with respect to workflow speed than the present basic paintbrush and gradient in LR2. LR is just getting into the non destructive local corrections area, so I'm sure LR3 will provide more advanced tools.
LR2 does run circles around NX2 in some respects, batch processing for example, just not at NEF conversion and editing, and LR2 is a cataloging program, whereas NX2 is browser based and strictly a NEF Raw processor--although it will do jpegs and tifs as well. NX2 is a specialized toolset designed to maximize the use of Nikon proprietary camera information and to edit its images. ( And, it finally has speed comparable to its competitors.)
Don't take my word for it, go to Moose Petersen's site and watch how a very well known pro uses NX2. He will give you a brief introduction to how quickly you can work with NX2 with a couple of basic uses. Watch his videos on NX2 at the bottom of the page.
By the way NX2 is completely non destructive editing, as it has been for years. It writes its metadata and changes back to the original NEF, which obviates the need for sidecars or DNG conversion. Here is a link for your convenience:

  • Lightroom 4 Adjustment Brush Crashed

    Hi,
Was editing an image in the develop module, applied the adjustment brush for saturation to the sky area, then pressed the "O" key to see the brushed area and Lightroom 4 crashed. The adjustment brush was set for 100% flow and auto masking with only the saturation slider adjusted to +12. I restarted Lightroom and brought up the same image and went to apply an adjustment brush, but as soon as I clicked on the brush Lightroom locked up and I got the following weirdness on my screen:
Kind of strange - thought you might like to see it.
Now it seems that attempting to do anything with this particular image will cause Lightroom 4 to lockup and display the weird little box. However, I am able to edit other images.

Ok, after further testing I have found the following:
    1) If I close all other applications, I don't get the weird little black box that looks like a media player. I had Outlook 2007 open previously.
    2) Any use of the adjustment brush fails to set an anchor point and causes Lightroom to stop responding.
    3) Any use of the "O" key to show the brush strokes will cause Lightroom to hang.
    4) Any adjustments have a noticeable lag between making the adjustment and seeing it on the screen.
As mentioned earlier, my system is:
Windows 7 64 bit with all updates applied
Intel Core2 Dual CPU running 2.6Mhz
    4GB memory
    Nvidia GeForce Graphics card
    Over 1TB of disk space
Lightroom 3.6 running amazingly well for me - no lag time unless the file size exceeds 1.5GB which most of the time my images are smaller than that.
Let me know if there is any additional information you need, or things you would like me to check.

  • Lightroom 5 Adjustment Brush Problem?

When I want to use my adjustment brush, I do not have the second circle show up to show where it has taken the adjustment from the photo. Is there a way to fix this? I was able to use it before and didn't have a problem. But I haven't used the program in a while. If anyone can help me with this that would be awesome.

When I am advising on weird adjustment brush problems I always say - Update your Mouse and Tablet drivers to the latest version.  Update your video card to the latest driver.  If neither of those fix it, then try resetting the preference file: Resetting (or 'Trashing') the Lightroom Preferences file - Lightroom Forums

  • No pin shows up with adjustment brush

Using the adjustment brush, a pin is supposed to appear where you make your initial brush stroke. It doesn't show up, even though the effects of the tool are there. I only know what is painted by typing "O" so that the red coloring shows up. The pin does show up using the Graduated filter.
LR2 trial version, Windows XP SP2, 3 MB RAM, 1.8 GHz duo core,

    Hit "H".

  • Help with Adjustment brush

    Hi All,
I have upgraded LR2 to 2.1. Now I can't use the adjustment brush. When i click on the photo to make an adjustment - nothing happens; not white dot, no change, no nothing. HELP! What am I doing wrong? The gradient filter works just fine.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Al

Albert - if you haven't already, after clicking on the brush tick the small box underneath it to open a drop-down list. At the bottom of this list is another box alongside the word 'Colour' (or color if you're American :-) ). Click or double click on this box to bring up the colour pallet and using the ey-dropper pick a crazy colour such as a deep red. Now try painting with the bush. If you didn't notice the effects before it may be because the chosen colour was way at the bottom of the colour pallet giving you a neutral grey (gray) which is sometimes hard to spot.

  • A set of configurable adjustment brushes

I would like to have a set of 6 adjustment brushes that I could configure individually then assign it to one of the 6 brushes in the set on the tool bar.

    >This issue related to Lr2.0 and 2.1, it was fixed in Lr 2.2
Wish you were 100% correct but alas not so for me and apparently others. Please read my latest post (#34) here for some helpful details:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b74b5a/33
While my machine may be considered "dated" and perhaps mocked by some, it was considered a hot (Asus) board in it's day with Intel 875 chipset, 3.0 Ghz Intel processor, Asus (NVidia) N6800 video card w/512 MB RAM, Promise RAID for both IDE and SATA, 3 GB RAM, etc., etc. running on Win XP Pro SP3. Built her myself and saved big $$.
    >The fact that the OP is having Camera Raw crash Photoshop is a REAL GOOD indication his computer has some serious problems
Maybe, but this issue is clearly an Adobe problem (Windows for sure)and is complicated by the many software/hardware factors, as well. Simply blaming one's hardware doesn't help solve the problem any more than someone ranting about Adobe's alleged incompetence. As you can see from my above referenced post, there is an issue with ACR (and CS4) albeit a relatively minor one (for me) involving a bit o' lag. Strangely enough, the ol' box seems to outperform many newer multi cores for some reason (Vista?) and overall I'm very happy with ACR and CS4 (next machine will likely be a Mac, though). LR needs more help if I'm to keep it beyond the trial period. Too bad, 30% off with free shipping from Adobe seemed to be a pretty good deal.

  • Lightroom 3 - Adjustment brush

I have Lightroom 3 and had to reinstall it. Prior to this everything worked fine. Now I have problems with the adjustment brush and size. I 'always' want the brush to give me a circle with an x inside so I can go to the exact spot in the image. If I use 'a' it will only give me the circle for up to size 7 and not bigger. If I use 'b' it will only give me the circle for a size greater than 32. Outside of these sizes it is giving me several different weird looking shapes that do not have an x as the middle point so these are very inaccurate to use. I did find an option of resetting it in the menu bar but this problem persists. Because of computer crashes I have had to reinstall LR3 a couple of times now and still it will not give me a circle. Another weird thing is that it does show the circle for the different sizes when I reset it, until I move to the image. I am going nuts.
    Please help if you can.
    Thank you
