Adjustment disabled in Aperture 2

Some short times ago I found that when I open Inspector-Adjustment it shows Adjustment Disabled and I can't find option to switch it on. Before everything was OK, but something happened. Please advise.
Boris

Yep. Sounds like you have Quick Preview turned on. As suggested, hit "P" to toggle Quick Preview on and off. When in Quick Preview, you are not able to make any adjustments as you are actually viewing the generated preview of your images, not the editable versions of your images.

  • It is possible to adjust videos on Aperture?

I have imported some videos on Aperture. I can not aply any adjustments. The message is Audio/Video (adjustment disabled) clicking "P" the message change in "quick preview on (adjustments disabled)". My question is: it is possible to adjust videos on Aperture

There is not much what you can do with videos in Aperture. You can trim them, when you press the gear icon in the video controls, and if you add them to a slideshow you can add black-and-white effects. But other than that, you will have to fall back on an external video editor.
I use iMovie to do basic preprocessing, since iMovie comes free with any new Mac, and has nice features like  stabilization, blue screen, picture in picture, or use or QuickTime 7 Pro for all effects, that QuickTime supports directly.

  • Problem with adjust pics in Aperture

Whe I try to adjust pictures in Aperture 2.1.2 the viewer window goes total black. Even if I just touch one of the adjustment option a little bit. It happens both when I use raw and jpg.
Thanks in advance for any help. I have a project I am working on and I have to finish it today. Do I really need to use Adobe Element for adjustment.
    Frank

I have tried with two differents camera: Nikon D70 and Leica-Lux 4
I know Aperture dont suport Leica d4. But it also happen when I try to adjust jpg pics. If I just touch any of the adjustment tools - the preview goes black
I import the images as raw and jpg.
Whe I use the app. Capture One I amfacing no problem - but I prefer Aperture.
Thanks for your answer - anyway - Frank

  • I can't see the adjustments under the Adjustment tab in Aperture. Where is the data?

Several months ago I dragged photos from Aperture into a Burn Folder on my Desktop. Today I dragged the photos from the Burn Folder on my Desktop into Aperture. My photos are all still edited, but I can't see any of the adjustments I made under the Adjustment Tab in Aperture. Where is that data? How do I get it back?

I'll cover most of this because I'm too busy to trim it, but be sure to read Léonie's post.

Can you explain to me the difference between a Preview and the Master image? I checked my preferences and they are set "Photo Preview: Half Size" and "Photo Preview quality: 8 Medium".
The Master is now known as the Original.  (Apple changed the term.  I don't know why.)  The "Original" is the term Aperture uses to designate the image-format file you imported into your Library.  When you import, Aperture creates a record in its database and creates an Image that you see in the Browser and the Viewer.  Every Image has an Original.
Aperture creates additional files that it uses.  Among these are a Version, which is a text file containing instructions regarding adjustments and metadata changes you make, some thumbnails, which are image-format files in small dimensions, and a Preview, which is a JPG-format file that is automatically updated to include any adjustments you have made.
The Original is _never_ altered.  Aperture is a _non-destructive_ photo developing workshop.  "Non-destructive" means that your original files (the ones that Aperture calls "Originals" once you import them) are never altered.
The Preview is _always_ altered.  It always is updated to include all the adjustments you have made to any Image.
As you know, you set the JPG parameters (size and quality) for your Previews in Aperture's preferences.
Does this mean that all the photos I have dragged to Burn Folders and burned to DVDs are lesser quality than my Masters in my Aperture Library? I thought I was backing up the Masters!
Sorry for the bad news, but the latter is not correct, and the former is.  When you drag an Image from the Browser or the Viewer, Aperture creates a copy of that Image's Preview.  (The User Manual should make this clear.  Currently it is incorrect.)
Note, too, that your Masters (now "Originals") are never altered.  What you might have wanted to back up were the Images in your Library.  Now -- get ready for the weird part -- those Images do not exist as image-format files.  There is no file that we can access in order to to back-up an Image.  You can either create share-able image-format files from your Images, and back those up, or you can back up your Aperture Library, which, when restored, will give you the opportunity to create share-able image-format files from your Images.
Aperture is structured this way -- it saves the imported file, untouched, and text instructions telling it how to create your Images on-the-fly -- specifically to save the space you would need to store full-size files of every Image in your Library.  Rather than save "the thing itself", it saves just what it needs to create "the thing itself".  The storage savings are enormous.
This is why your workflow is (in general): import, make adjustments and add metadata, sort, group, and organize, and export _only when you need an image-format file to share with another program_.  You then share that file, and delete it (because if you need another, you can create it by exporting from Aperture).
How about when I drag photos from my Aperture library to an external hard drive icon on my desktop? Am I dragging the Masters or Previews? If so, are the Previews lesser quality than the Masters in my Aperture Library?
When you drag Images from Aperture, you create copies of those Images' Previews.  If you haven't made any adjustments, then they are Previews of your Masters (now called "Originals").  But Previews are JPGs with the dimensions and quality you told Aperture to use, whereas your Originals are whatever format, dimensions, and quality they were when you imported those files.  The quality of an Image's Preview is always less than the quality of that Image's Original.  (I'm using "quality" to mean "amount of useable data".)
You should test this right now.  Create a new Finder folder.  In Aperture, select an Image with adjustments applied.  Drag it into your newly-created Finder folder.  Then export it's Original into the Finder folder (File ▹ Export ▹ Original).  Then export the Version with whatever settings you want (File ▹ Export ▹ Version).  Compare the three files you just created.
I think I'm going to be sick! Please tell me it isn't so! I have 1000s of beautiful photos from trips on both DVDs and a Western Digital external hard drive, but I dragged them all from my Aperture Library to either a Burn Folder or a Western Digital icon on my desktop, then I deleted the originals from my Aperture Library. I did this to make room on my Mac Book Pro hard drive. This is how Apple One on One taught me to backup my photos!
    I'm sorry  .
To back up your Originals, back them up.  They are files.  If they are in your Library, they get backed up when you back up your Library.
To back up your Images, either make files from them, and back up those files, or ... back up your Library with the knowledge that that way you can create new files from your Images after restoring your Library from your back-up.
To shrink the size of your Library so that it leaves more space on your system drive:
    - remove un-needed Images
    - relocate some Images' Originals to a second drive (almost always external).  Aperture makes this easy to do.
Alternative, put your entire Library on a second drive.  Libraries on external drives connected via USB-3 or Thunderbolt work fine.
In general, a photographer's commitment to an image-management database system (of which Aperture is one) is complete:  it works best when it is all-enclusive.  I recommend against removing Images from your Library either to save space or to archive them.  My personal Library catalogues all my photographs.  Using it I can find, and make available, any photo I've taken and decided to keep.  Once I decide to keep it, it stays -- forever -- as a record in my Library.
Note that your "Library Set" (I just made that up, but it should exist) includes your Library package (that shows as a file in Finder) and any Referenced Originals that belong to Images in your Library.  You must back up your entire Library Set.
The Geniuses at the Apple Store generally do great jobs in demanding circumstances.  They are, by need, generalists who must be reasonably adept with a lot of software.  It seems you were (badly) misinformed.  Please recommend this post to the one who coached you, so that s/he makes sure that others aren't similarly misled.

  • How do I adjust video "Audio/Video (Adjustment Disabled)"?

When opening a video file, from my Canon Eos 7 d, the adjustment field is grey and it says: Audio/Video (Adjustment Disabled). And Im not in Quick Preview mode.

The only thing I don't like about sending it to an external editor is that it creates another copy of an already large file - similar to what it did before when you'd roundtrip to photoshop. For more extensive editing of video, that's fine, but for simple things like rotating a video, it would be nice to not have to create a whole new copy.

  • Wrong image preview while I am moving adjustment sliders in Aperture

When I move adjustment sliders, a different recently and previosly adjusted image will frequently show in the viewer while the slider is being moved.  Sometimes parts of two or more previous images will appear and sometimes in the wrong orientation. This makes it makes it impossible to see the result of the adjustment until I release the slider which is annoying.  I cannot reliably replicate the problem but it happens often.  It seems random as if the wrong image is in a cache and not refreshing properly.
    Details:
    MacPro (New) 6-core 32GB RAM, D300 Graphics OS X
    Aperture 3.5.1
Moved Library from old machine (2007 MacPro) and rebuilt library
    250K images all referenced
    Library is big (236GB)
Files are RAW Canon 5dMk3 and tend to be about 30MB
    Preferences:
    Import: standard previews
Previews: generate automatically and share when quitting (half size medium quality)
library created new previews for all images when I rebuilt it
machine will run processor and memory hard, sometimes around 90%
Might it be a poor choice of preference settings or a corrupt library?  Anyone else ever experience this condition?  I would appreciate any suggestions.

On a conceptual level, it should not be a problem, but a Preview is related to a Version, and a Version is related to one Original/Master.  There can be multiple Versions, all of which must point to a single Original.
You are not adjusting a Preview, but rather a Version.  What you see as you adjust is a new rendering of the Version, and is not the Preview you saw when you decided to adjust, I believe.
There are on the order of 8 or 9 other files related to every Original even if only one Version in the Package that is the Library. Very complex indexing going on at all times.
Please open an image, and before attempting to adjust, click on File, and choose Show in Finder -- is the Finder image the correct one?  And in the correct location?
Now attempt to adjust.  Does the image change?  If so, again us Show in Finder and check.

  • Auto-Adjust disabled; mic volume still adjusts.

I have the volume auto-adjust turned off on Skype. Yet the mic volume still automatically adjusts in skype. I often run two instances of Skype. On both accounts, I have the Volume Auto-Adjust option disabled. I have even gone into my computer's hardware settings, and disabled the setting that allows applications to take exclusive control of the microphones I use. Whether the mic is built-in, or USB, Skype still automatically adjusts its volume. I've tried three different microphones and it automatically adjusts all of them. I use Windows 7, 64. Skype is up to date. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Razer Megalodon.  I have used it for a couple years just fine with Ventrilo, Mumble, Raid Call, Teamspeak 1 & 2, others, AND Skype.  No problems, until my most recent re-install of Skype.  I had Skype uninstalled for several months because i wasn't playing the game(s) that my online friends used Skype as a Voice Client.  I recently started playing again, and reinstalled Skype (latest Installer).  Now it seems my Microphone Level in the System Sound Options panel (Open Sound Devices> Recording> Microphone Properties> Level) gets auto-managed regardless of the settings in Skype.  This is brand new behavior on my system and only happened after installing Skype.  It seems to lower the Mic Level in my system even when Skype is closed (R-Click skype in Notification Area> Quit... Then I check Task Manager for Skype in Processes and in Services> End Task/Process Tree if still running).  Every time i try to check the way it works in my other voice clients and in the "Microphone Setup Wizard" in windows, the Auto-Leveling behavior is there, even when disabled/turned off in ALL other Microphone using programs including Windows.  When i Adjust Skype's Microphone Level from Max to 75%, i can watch the System's Microphone Level drop to 0.  When i move the Skype Microphone Level to 0, then move the System Microphone Level to 2 (yes two) it jumps Skype's Microphone Level to Max. Yes, i have disabled any and all "Application Control / Exclusive Mode" options in Windows and all my Voice Clients including Skype.  With a little digging, anyone reding this can find that there are settings on the Headset as well... again, i have been using this headset for years without issue, i know how to set it up.  As you can imagine, it makes my voice either too soft/muffled to hear, or overpowering with reverb/echo/feedback.  As mentioned before, this is NEW behavior since the latest re-install of Skype, and it is affecting my entire system and other Voice Clients now, wheather Skype is running or not.  I hope this behavior is not intended by design.  I understand the need for Auto-Leveling for those who can't be arsed to learn how their PC works beyond the "Push the Power Button Crowd," however to force those who know how to use a PC (built mine from scratch) and manage their settings properly to use this Auto-Leveling by making it "Always On" is no less than insulting.  Please, Please!, tell me this is an accidental side effect and not another intentional "Dumbing Down" tactic by MS.

  • Mass unset an adjustment (white balance), aperture 3

    Hi all,
I upgraded to Aperture 3 and everything went smoothly, even the library upgrade.
Except for a small adjustment thing: After "reprocess masters" every image I had white balance set manually (most of my tens of thousands of images), looks now green. Not only slightly, everything is green. When I unclick the white balance adjustment, the picture returns to pretty much what I expected it to be (camera is Canon 5D, raw images).
Seems that Aperture 3 processes this generally better and pictures look fine without adjusting white balance.
Now the question is: how do I mass unset white balance setting for each and every image inside a project? With lift and stamp I can change white balance, but I didn't find a way to unset it completely. Manually I can uncheck the box before white balance and that does the trick, but I don't plan to click 42000 images manually.
Is there a way to batch change this? It would be easier to just unset everything, then go through the previews quickly to see if some of the photos need WB adjustment and do those few manually. I've now gone through five projects manually and have left the manual adjustment to only about ten photos with a slight modification towards purple.
    /hv

Yes 5D can do that but I don't use the feature.
These are albums created ages ago with first Aperture 1 and then Aperture 2 for the newer ones. Actually, this pointed me to the right direction.
The greenness problem seems to trouble only old photos processed with Aperture 1.0 or 1.1 RAW settings. I've been processing the oldest albums first and didn't even think about this.
For 2.x photos, the reprosessing doesn't cause any greenness or other problems, and also, curiously, the "stamp default from jpg" trick works for these images just as suggested here, in case I wanted to remove the WB settings, which seems to be unnecessary.
But for 1.x raw processed photos, there is a desperate need to do something and the lift & stamp trick doesn't work.
Weird, but the problem seems to be in the fact that I never converted anything when I migrated to Aperture 2. There was no need to do anything so I just let the old ones be as they were. I tested moving to 2.0 raw with a couple of photos and I wasn't happy with the result as something in the colours and/or white balance changed and some minor adjustments would have been needed.
So thanks for your help and ideas once again. I'll leave the old ones for now as they are and hope Apple fixes this. They obviously haven't tested the migration at all with a library containing photos processed with the ancient 1.0 raw processing.

  • Slow loading images disabling adjustments Aperture 2

I am running Aperture 2.1.4 on an intel mac having just moved over from a powerpc. Its a big leap in many ways.
In aperture all the images load so much faster than before except the adjustments are disabled and the heading at the top of the Adjustments sidebar is that the "Image Loading"
The image is actually visible in the main window so its just the image levels box which is blank along with the above message.
Any inputs? Is there anyone out there still using Aperture 2.1.4?
    Many thanks
    Anthony

Is aperture 3 a new application rather than an upgrade to 2? I'm wondering how smooth a transition the process will be.
Aperture 3 is an update from Aperture 2 which means it is a separate application then needs to be purchased through the Mac App Store. Upgrades (going from version 2.4 to 2.5 for example) are free but updates (going from version 2 to version 3) need to be paid for.
Again good luck and take your time, document everything you do. Also have backups especially of things like the Aperture librssry, things that cannot be replaced.

  • Can you combine multiple Adjustment presets in Aperture?

Is it possible to combine multiple adjustment presets into a single "master" preset setting? I know that I can adjust all the settings on a single photo, and then "lift/stamp" the settings onto multiple photos.
What I'd like to do is have a single preset that has all of my standard NEF (Raw) adjustments setup as a starting point for my D3 photos. From that point, I can then tweak them individually for the final version.
I'm finding that I make the same adjustments (Eg: saturation boost, vibrancy, edge sharpen, etc) on most NEF's out of the camera and I'm looking for a faster way to save all the individual tool adjustment presets into a combined "master" preset.
    Any help is appreciated.
    regards
    Tom

Thanks for the link. I had seen this thread prior to posting my question, as it really just gives other means of using "lift/stamp" to create adjustment presets in a different fashion, using existing images as starting points.
What I'm still trying to confirm is whether there is a way to create a master combination from all/any individual tool presets adjusted. It seems like "manage presets" should give some type of ability to combine the individual tool presets, but so far, I haven't seen how to do so....

  • Adjusting image in Aperture for Apple TV (16:9)

I create an album from original master photos.
I cropped them in 16:9 and syncronize them via iTunes to Apple TV.
They not appear in Apple TV.
Which is the correct method to do that ?
I'd like not duplicate original master to save disk space.

Yes the problem seems related to update preview in Aperture.
After cropping picture to fit 16:9 ratio, i've now manually (not exists an autoupdatepreview option ?).
It's strange but only 1 photo is update also in Apple TV the others remain unmodified.
I've waited for the updatepreviewprocess to finish and then open itunes to update (automagically, isn't it?) photo also in Apple TV.

  • Aperture 3.0.3 Adjust Date and Time

Working on a batch (~3K) scanned images that all need to be adjusted for date and time, the adjustments and so forth. All notes below is with Master images.
My observations so far with the unpredictable "Adjust Date and Time" function, "D&T" hereafter and some suggestions on improving Aperture.
    0. Always make sure that you start by "edit->deselect all" - even if nothing is selected.
APPLE: PLEASE MAKE IT SIMPLER TO SEE WHAT IS SELECTED (MASTERS, VERSIONS, etc).
    1. Always use US language selection - Language selection seems to matter for D&T. I am from Denmark, living in US but often switch between US and DK language (to get some special characters). In Denmark we use dd-mmm-yyyy and in use we use mmm-dd-yyyy. When i use the danish locale with the "D&T" function Aperture D&T is totally unpredictable - so stick with US.
APPLE: PLEASE DONT BE TOO SMART BUT USE THE D&T FORMAT LISTED IN THE D&T DIALOG BOX
    2. D&T time-shift does not work. Unfortunately this 'capability' cannot be disabled - Somehow Aperture check what the time was originally stamped on the image and use this for the new "D&T" - first i though that this was adjusting ~1 sec between images but it seems that Aperture do something like the following (sorry for my non-applescript'ish examples below)
newTime = "edit->adjust date and time"
    foreach image do
    set time to image.D&T.time
    try() change image.D&T.time newTime+image.D&T.time
    catch () newTime image.D&T.time
Not good as it time-shift from the original picture - if the time is good this is not a problem but if time (from the stamp) is off (like all of mine) most likely the time will get the date to wrap into the next day (or year if you got a bunch of images)..
APPLE: PLEASE ADD AN OPTION TO DISABLE TIME-SHIFT in D&T
    3. Dont include DNG - Aperture cannot change the date for a dng and it seems to screw up the time-shift in "D&T" - i think the algorithm do something like
    newD&T = "edit->adjust date and time"
    for each image do
    set D&T to image.D&T
    try() change image.D&T to newD&T
    catch() newD&T = image.D&T
The problem seems to be that when Aperture work on a image it cannot change it use this images (that it cannot change) D&T for the next images D&T, i got a bunch (a ton actually) of examples
    1994
    1994
    2008.dng
    2008
When using a different language locale it gets even worse.
APPLE: PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE THE D&T COUNTERS WHEN WORKING ON A FORMAT NOT (WELL) SUPPORTED.
    4. Always check your trash for images - after i deleted projects (empty, no images) i have found images for those projects in the trash. Cannot explain why this is but i am happy that i checked the trash before emptying - put back works just fine.
I am currently using the following methodology for my scans.
    1. load in all pics, create albums for years and projects for months - e.g. 1993.0201 <text>, 1998.0327 <text> and sort scans to the correct albums and projects
    2. export each album as separate libraries, open library, fix D&Ts, places and faces. Exit, reopen and check trash for images that should not have been deleted. Clean trash, close.
    - For faces i add a few pics' of recognizable folks - open faces and select from the many suggestions aperture offers - very fast.
    3. Open or import library to master (my master got ~20K pics currently)
I am interested in learning if i am the 'only one' with Aperture D&T 'problems' or if i am using the tool incorrectly.
    Kenneth

    nathan:
What type of edit were you making. Have been trying to duplicate that and cannot. I've changed the date and selected the original file to be changed also. Then I edited the file by cropping, changing the exposure and shadows and saving. Both versions are still tiff files.
Now these are tiff files that I converted over from jpgs with Photoshop as my camera doesn't take tiffs. Don't know if that will make any difference.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • APERTURE DISABLED BY MOBILE ME

An upgrade to MobileMe has disabled my Aperture Application. It will not open and only wants to make a new MobileMe album.
Have tried reinstalling, updates to 2.0 , removed and re-set Aperture System ID,Viewers are all muted etc.
    Anyone with an idea?

Since there have been no replies to my original question, I'm thinking this is just the way Aperture works. It's easy to select a group of images and click on the Mobile Me icon to create a Mobile Me gallery containing the selected images. However if you first create a Web Page or Web Journal, and drag images into it, chose a theme, add text etc, and publish to Mobile Me it publishes as a web page to your iDisk in the Sites folder, I think. The problem as I see it is that if you don't remember the URL, it's hard to display the web page, and as far I know, you can't display the web page using Mobile Me. I mistakenly thought the web page would show up as a link within my Mobile Me galleries or be displayed there along with other galleries. This is obviously not the case. Is there a way to integrate web pages created in Aperture with iWeb? Has anyone done this? Or is it easier to publish web pages to other hosting sites?
