Adjustment layer question

I'm following along with the tutorial "How to edit a photo in Photoshop" from the tutorial page on PS-CC. I'm on the video "Fix and create cool color effects."
I cannot get the adjustment layer to work on the lighthouse photo from Adobe as part of the tutorial.
After following the instructions, and clicking the image, I get a pop-up box that says "Could not use the color replacement tool because the target is an adjustment layer". Even when I move my mouse over the image all I get is the zero with a slash through the middle.
I'm stuck as I can't follow along with this tutorial successfully. I'm sure I have missed a simple step or something isn't checked. Thanks for the help.

Hi,
Instead of the Color Replacement Tool, you want the Brush Tool, which is in the same tool slot as the Color Replacement Tool.
(i can see how that happened, because in the video it just says press B for the Brush Tool)

  • Adjustment layer questions

    in cs5
    I select a layer and choose to make an adjustment layer from the bottom of the layers panel, and choose hue/saturation.
    How can I make a selection just around the teeth of a person and remove the yellow? I made a selection around the teeth, feathered it, chose yellows from the drop down in the adjustments panel, though it is making changes to the whole layer and not my selected teeth.
    Thanks.

    If you create the adjustment layer when you have a selection it will create the mask for you automatically.
    If you create the selection after creating the adjustment layer  or you want to mask more, you have to fill with black the masked areas in the mask. One way to do this, first click the mask of the adjustment layer in the layers palette to select it and make it a target for your edits, then invert the selection Ctrl + Shift + i, make sure that the current color is black (press the d key and if necessary x), and then press Alt + Delete keys to fill the mask.

  • Hue/Saturation adjustment layer questions

    1. When selecting the  channel, like red and then boosting the saturation, does this mean that it is only boosting saturation to the reds in the image and there is no possibility of it boosting the saturation of greens or yellows that may reside in the image?
    2. I also did separate saturation boosts to the green and yellow channel. What is then the purpose of going to the Master channel and boosting the saturation to this channel after boosting the saturation of the individual red, green and blue channels?
    Thanks.

    1. To clarify what you meant by "fine tuning what colors are selected by adjusting sliders for the range at the bottom" my photo has a pink object and a person with reds in the skin. If I select the Reds drop down in the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer and use the eyedropper to select just the pink object to use for my saturation boost, will it leave the reds in the person's skin alone? Is that how it works?
    2. Does it make a difference if you boost the saturation for the Master prior to adjusting the individual colors like reds, and greens? Does the order matter if you do the reds and greens first and then the master?
    Thanks.

  • Simple Adjustment Layer Question

    I jumped straight from Photoshop CS to CS3 and was disappointed to find that many of the layer rules had changed. I was used to a handy feature where I could add an adjustment layer and then by pressing Command 'G', I could make the adjustment layer only affect the layer below it. Now, Command G appears to create a new groupwhich doesn't appear to be the same thing. I've scoured the help file and can't seem to find this exact feature and what it has changed to. Probably because I never knew the official name of it. I'm sure this is a simple thing, but I've been searching for the equivalent for a while now.
    Can someone please tell me how to achieve that same effect?

    i Or dump them both in that group folder you accidentally created.
    But make sure you set it to "normal" and not "pass through"...otherwise it won't behave correctly.

  • How to set levels values in adjustment layer via script?

    I try to make a script which generates a non destructive adjustment layer for levels which already sets values for shadow levels and highlight levels. I tried the scripting listener in order to record it. Unfortunately the scripting listener only records the creation of adjustment layers but not their settings like shadow or highlight levels.
    The first question here: Why can't the scripting listener do this?
    So I tried to do it on my own and came up with the following script which won't work. My second question therefore is, can you help me to make a script which achieves my goal? Thanks a lot. I use Photoshop CC 2014.
    var desc780 = new ActionDescriptor();
    desc780.putInteger( charIDToTypeID( "ShdL" ), 60 );
    desc780.putInteger( charIDToTypeID( "HghL" ), 190 );
    var list126 = new ActionList();
    list126.putObject( charIDToTypeID( "LvlA" ), desc780 );
    var desc779 = new ActionDescriptor();
    desc779.putList( charIDToTypeID( "Adjs" ), list126 );
    executeAction( charIDToTypeID( "Lvls" ), desc779, DialogModes.NO );
    Here is the script which has been recorded by the scripting listener. As you can see there is no setting of the adjustment layer.
    var idMk = charIDToTypeID( "Mk  " );
    var desc188 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idnull = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
    var ref135 = new ActionReference();
    var idAdjL = charIDToTypeID( "AdjL" );
    ref135.putClass( idAdjL );
    desc188.putReference( idnull, ref135 );
    var idUsng = charIDToTypeID( "Usng" );
    var desc189 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idType = charIDToTypeID( "Type" );
    var desc190 = new ActionDescriptor();
    var idpresetKind = stringIDToTypeID( "presetKind" );
    var idpresetKindType = stringIDToTypeID( "presetKindType" );
    var idpresetKindDefault = stringIDToTypeID( "presetKindDefault" );
    desc190.putEnumerated( idpresetKind, idpresetKindType, idpresetKindDefault );
    var idLvls = charIDToTypeID( "Lvls" );
    desc189.putObject( idType, idLvls, desc190 );
    var idAdjL = charIDToTypeID( "AdjL" );
    desc188.putObject( idUsng, idAdjL, desc189 );
    executeAction( idMk, desc188, DialogModes.NO );

  • [Photoshop CC (Win7 64bit)]  Adjustment Layer keeps old value when I made undo.

    Undo in Adjustment layer in Photoshop CC doesn't work well.
    When I made undo, the photo would go back, but "Properties Panel" doesn't go back. It still keeps the same value before undoing.
    Properties Panel would go correct value, after I select a another layer and select adjustment layer again.
    I checked all of adjustment layers, and I found that most of them has the same behavior. (Between Brightness/Contrast... and Selective Color...)
    Are there any solution?

  • Grouping Adjustment layer with Gradient Fill layer

    Page 151 of "The Missing Manual" suggests that one should be able to group a Levels Adjustment layer with a Gradient Fill layer so that the levels adjustment fades out to one side.
    If I understand this correctly, the setup would be:
    Levels Adjustment Layer (grouped with layer below)
    Gradient Fill layer (with a gradient from Opaque to Transparent)
    Photo in Background layer
    but I cannot get the desired effect of original picture on one side blending through to adjusted levels on the other.
    I can get the desired effect if I dispense with the Gradient Fill layer and simply manually create the gradient on the mask of the Levels Adjustment layer but this loses the advantage of easy adjustment of the gradient.
    [Thanks to those who answered my question about linking a mask to a layer. As this is a separate query, I thought it best to start a new topic]

    Sanders1,
    I thought I'd try it, myself, and got results that I did not expect...
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1OVdT0C7oX46DsPm6TrfT5xxrm3h
    1 - The background image.
    2 - I created a Gradient Fill layer using color (red) to transparent.
    3 - I created a Levels Adjustment layer, set to reduce red and green,
    leaving a blue image.
    4 - I grouped the Levels Adjustment layer with the Gradient Fill layer.
    Is this the type of result you are seeing? I wonder what is the logic.

  • Reversed B&W adjustment layer; export color channel to layer; CS5.1; Ps extended (Win 7 64-bit)

    I've had a serial number for 1 whole day, so I hope this isn't a completely ignorant question.
    What I want to do is to have an adjustment layer that is a reversed, black and white image.  I initially thought to merge B&W and reverse adjustment layers, but read that an adjustment layer may not be the target of a merge.  Is the way to accomplish this to fiddle with the B&W adjustment layer sliders somehow?
    Also, I think this is a related question, if I like how the black and white displayed image of a given color channel looks, how can I export that channel into a layer?
    Thanks!

    You can't merge adjustment layers, but you can clip one to the underlying layer (including another adjustment layer), so that it doesn't affect the layers below.
    Click between the two layers in the Layers panel while holding the alt key (the cursor will change). The keyboard shortcut is alt+ctrl+G (although I don't remember if this is the default shortcut or if I made it up...I lose track).
    As for turning a channel into a layer it's straightforward. Target the channel and copy, then target the RGB composite and paste (otherwise you'll just paste into the same channel).
    Edit: for having had a serial number for a whole day, I must say you have an excellent grasp of the concepts. Those questions aren't ignorant at all; quite the opposite

  • Control propogation of adjustment layer?

    hi there,
    quick photoshop analogy to get to my question:
    in photoshop, you can control the propogation of an adjustment layer located within a group by changing the default blend mode of the group from "pass through" to "normal"
    is there some similar method in after effects to limit an adjustment layer's influence to only those layers within the same pre-comp?
    thanks very much
    LML

    If the adjustment layer is in a precomp, it shouldn't be affectling layers outside of the precomp (unless you've selected the continuously rasterize button).

  • Cs3 curve adjustament layer , can i zoom and use the hand too ?

    Hi
    i have a question about cs3 , under xp
    i add a curve adjustament layer ,-> curve dialog (window) open ->  well i can zoom with the mouse wheel
    but if i keep the space keyboard pressed , i can't use the hand tool
    when i click the space keyboard , it works like the [ok] button , in short if like i click on ok and close the window
    is there a tip to use the curve adjustament layer , zoom and  use the hand tool
    thanks
    cheers

    That's the behavior you would expect in general when using the space bar while a dialog is open in Windows, since the space bar is normally expected to operate the default button - [OK] in this case.  Just for thoroughness I did reproduce the issue with Photoshop CS3 just now, just as you described.  I don't believe there's any workaround.
    This is likely one reason why Adobe implemented the new Adjustments Panel in Photoshop CS4 to replace that dialog entirely.  In PS CS4 and newer you get the functionality you desire - that of having the space bar invoke the Panning feature, even though you may be changing the parameters of an Adjustment layer.

  • Adjustment Layer or fill layer for Effects

    I have seen this question asked but not answered. I want to be able to apply and effect such as Boris or Sapphire across multiple clips. In AE this can be done with and adjustment layer in Avid by simply dropping the clip on an empty layer. I have seen it suggest that a sequence created with clips to be effect then cut back into the master sequence and then apply the effects. Must be a better way. Any sugestions?

    Glad to have added some drama to the forum! But It keeps getting said that I don't care for the answer. I am glad for the answer but a little turned off by how some of you seem to feel it is necessary to respond. I asked a simple question and didn't need a lecture on how FCP is not Avid or AE, Duh!
    I had done a quick search of the forums and had not found the answer to my question. I had read about nesting and wanted to know if this was in fact the best way to handle apply effects across multiple elements, seems it is. I also wanted to see if anybody else dealt with fx in a different way. I have been editing long enough and in enough different environments to know that no matter what program is being used you can find a number of editors doing good work with a number of different styles and techniques.
    Am I not wrong when I say that nesting a single layer of video in order to apply fx is cumbersome? I do this kind of work a lot and and I end up making many revisions and yes I would prefer not to have to step into a nest in order to change my cut. Is that bitchy?
    In the future please no advice. Who are you? My dad?

  • CS4 change adjustment layer

    In CS3 it was possible to change an adjustment layer after it was created, i.e. duplicate a curves adjustment layer and then go Layer>Change to make that layer a levels adjustment layer (or some other type of adjustment layer). Is it possible to do this in CS4 and if so how?

    In answer to your question about why I would want to do this, the curves to level was just an example. But in the past, with CS4, if I had an adjustment layer with a mask, that was for example, an exposure layer, and then I wanted to reduce the saturation of that same masked area, I would just duplicate the layer and change the layer content to hue/sat. Of course, there are lots of other ways to do this, copy the mask or selection and then make a new layer with a newly created mask, but those other ways all seem to be more cumbersome. I thought it was a nice feature in CS3 but apparently it does not exist in CS4 — asked the question thinking it might be some key stroke and not documented since I could find no reference to in in the documentation for CS4.

  • Selecting Color Balance adjustment layer brings up Levels adjustment layer

    Ok, so, all of a sudden I cannot get a color balance adjustment layer to come up. Every time I do photoshop creates a levels layer. Selecting levels makes a levels layer. All of the other adjustment layers seem to be working normally. How do I fix this? I have a deadline and no time to be reinstalling photoshop.

    Reinstalling the application seldom helps, and re-installing without trashing your preferences is futile as you end up right where you started.
    I understand your frustrartion, but please remember that you are not addressing Adobe here in this user to user forum.

  • Adjustment layer on top of 3d layer

    Hi all, how do you make ae adjustment layer work with 3d layer? For example I have a red colour solid layer (with 3d turn on) and on top of it i have a adjustment layer with hue and saturation effect added, but when i play with the effect slider the solid colour doesnt change...
    Thanks for the help

    This sounds like one of those cases where it's much better to apply the effect directly to the layer in question than to use an adjustment layer.
    In fact, it's good practice to limit adjustment layer use to only those times whan they're absolutely necessary.  If you use them as a crutch, you'll run into problems eventually.
    Like now, I guess....

  • Photoshop CS5 Adjustment Layer Icons

    In PS CS5, the adjust-layer icons are generic and non-descriptive in the layer panel. Is this a bug?
    Thanks

    I have had this problem also in Photoshop CS3 on a mac, but only on some documents, and the generic icon saves with those files. Going back and applying the icon size fix cures the problem on those selected older files. But why was the "small" layer icon size used on those to begin with?
    Thanks,
