Adjustment Layers Greyed Out

Hello All,
I keep having the same problem, just a few times a month... I'll start work on an image and I'll strike up an adjustment layer, I'll post a image of what I'm talking about at the bottom, because it's actually happing to me as I type this... I was using levels, but it could be any adjustment layer, it's done it on almost every type of adjustment layer I've used... The AL will be completely greyed out... For instance, I can adjust the whites, greys, and blacks on the RGB AL for Levels, but I can't go any deeper than that, I usually do individual adjustments to the Red, Green, and Blue channels, then to the whites, greys, and blacks respectively... I was just wondering if anyone else has had this problem or knows how to solve it... If I'm making a double post here I'm terribly sorry and please take your time getting back to me... I'm not one to rush anyone, and good things come to those who wait... take care...

Thank you both for the quick response. Zeno, I had just somewhat noticed that when I made a text layer that the adjustments panel would become greyed out... I can't seem to find a simple way to fix it, and it seems to stay around on the image even after I close it. If I close the image and reopen it, it doesn't go away, but if I save the image with a different name and then go back to the Adjustments panel I can then edit the levels adjustments for instance... I'll try your two methods the Help->System Info and going to Free Transform... Also thank you for reporting the bug to Adobe... Take care..

  • Why is "New Volume From Layers" Greyed Out? (PS CS5 Extended)

OK here's what I've tried, based on forum research:
    1. Make sure two layers are selected.
    2. Deleted PS CS5 preferences (using Shift+Ctrl+Alt method) - tried twice.
    3. Checked that my video card is supported (it is).
Yet this menu item continues to be greyed out - I'd appreciate any suggestions to get it working!
I cannot find out how this menu item is meant to be used as there seems to be no article in Adobe Help.
    Thanks in advance!

Is there an "unhelpful answer" button?
In that case how does this guy get it to work with TWO layers http://www.planetphotoshop.com/3d-light-beams.html and also the demo from MAX2010 - maybe he was bluffing?
And two vector paths is normally enough to interpolate a 3D volume in any 3D modeller I've ever used. So the "minimum of 3 paths" is simply not true.
So, I'm left with the question why is "New Volume" from layers greyed out?
    Thanks
    Richard
P.S. It works with two layers on my OSX 10.6.7 machine.

  • Preview: Adjust Color greyed out for PDFs

Just scanned a bunch of pages as a PDF and opened it in Preview. The levels were off so I wanted to Adjust Color, but it was greyed out. Am I correct in assuming that this only works with image files, not PDFs?

A PDF file cannot be edited like a document file except using Adobe Acrobat. You can edit the original document, then create a new PDF. This is also true of image files if they have already been made into PDFs.

  • Preview slow & Adjust Size greyed out

Preview has started running slow and I can't adjust the size of a jpeg file - Adjust Size is greyed out. I'm running OS10.9.1 on a MacBook Air.  Never had this before.  Any ideas please?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • PC Photoshop Elements 12 - Layers grey out

For any image, or if I create a new image the 'Layer' tools are all greyed out.
    Any ideas why?

    Are you in 'Expert' mode?
Also layers are not available on 16 bits picture files. If that is the case, convert to 8 bits.

  • Layers are locked & greyed out when trying to unlock them/add a layer, how can I fix this?

Whenever I try to add a layer it won't allow me to do such and is greyed out. I looked further into it and it mentioned it was locked and now I can't unlock it. Help?

    Good day!
The image seems to be Indexed Color (Image > Mode > …) and not all Color Modes support Layers.

  • Adjusting Gradient Color's GREYED Out

In my motion project for some reason several of my text layers I cannot change the gradient colors of the font. I can select different present gradient colors, but I cannot create my own gradient colors or modify any of the preset gradient colors. The standard gradient sliding bar for color modification is greyed out. Why would this be? Some of my text layers in the project are fine, I can modify the gradient colors. Other text layers I cannot, what would the difference be?
    Words of wisdom appreciated, thanks!
    lance

Actually I think this was a combination of bug / human error. The problem was I just selected the layer in the Project window, then went into the Inspector to modify the gradient. The solution was I had to first double click on the text object in the screen and make sure the cursor was blinking in the text itself. Then I could edit the gradient colors in Inspector.
Hope my blundering can help others avoid the same boo boo:)

  • Brushes greyed out with Hue Saturation adjustment layer

    Hi,
I was editing a photo using a hue saturation adjustment layer in CS6 and wanted to paint on the mask to hide some small areas. However, the brushes palette is greyed out. Any ideas what's causing this?
    Kindest regards

What version photoshop cs6 are you using?
Have you applied all the latest updates from within photoshop under Help>Updates?
Resetting the photoshop preferences might fix it as well:

  • Effects adjustment brush in Lightroom 5 greyed out, only available option is Custom.  How do I enable Effects adjustment brush

Would like to know why Effects adjustment brush is disabled (greyed out) and the only other option is Custom.

It sounds as though you have the Mask Overlay turned on, but with the colour of the mask changed from the default pink to the dark grey that you are seeing when you paint. So either turn off the mask overlay, or change it's colour to something that suits you better (use Shift-O to cycle through the different coloured masks).
To clarify....when you paint with the mask overlay ON, you only see the mask colour on the painted areas until you either switch off the mask or dismiss the active adjustment brush (such as by clicking NEW)....then you get to see the actual effect that you painted.

  • Photoshop layers palette greyed out

I just upgraded from MacOSX 10.5.8 to 10.6 and using Photoshop CS4.
Not sure if this is related to what happened today, but...

I need to duplicate a layer in a high res RGB image. The LAYER, CHANNELS, PATH palettes have all options greyed out, except "convert to smart object", which I don't know yet what that is. The image is in 8 bits/channel. How do I fix this?

  • Add grade layer greyed out

I'm in a direct link Pr project in Sg. Why are the add grade layers are greyed out?

This still isn't explained well ... so here goes.
In a Direct Link mode, you are using the Premiere Pro project file as the basis for all things done. It is a very different beast than a SpeedGrade project file, and in some ways amazing they can do this. However, there are some limits. SpeedGrade is NOT allowed to "touch" any timeline setting ... add, cut, or trim clips, add layers to a sequence, nothing. Hence what is natural to do in SpeedGrade in "native" mode is not allowed in Direct Link.
So ... the way to get grading layers is to create Adjustment Layers in PrPro, placing them over and across (if applicable) those clips of a sequence where you want to apply a grading layer. Then in Sg, you simply use that as your grading layer. It was a bit strange at first when the CC model came in, but I quickly learned to follow this. And when I forget to create one or discover I need one, it's a few seconds to go back to PrPro through the return-to-PrPro icon, create the layer/s, then DL back to Sg.
Of course, creating multiple layers on any track be it a clip or layer is the same ... the lower left corner layer stack is the typical Adobe-style process. And I do recommend creating additional primary, secondary, or " + " layers for nearly every different step of the process.

  • Add/Remove Keyframe Greyed Out on Motion:Scale

I am trying to motion scale and I cannot create ANY keyframes.
I am only allowed to create keyframes in the opacity menu.
I am using Premiere Pro Version 4
I am trying to do this effect on a JPG image. I have also tried the effect on a video clip, and nothing. I am unable to create ANY keyframes, it is greyed out.
    Any ideas as to why?

Glad that you're up and editing.
I do agree with Jim on reading everything on Keyframing, as it is a wonderfully powerful tool. Check out Bezier Curves to adjust Velocity (Ease-In/Ease-Out will be useful too, when animating). I probably rely on Keyframing in PrPro more than I should, as AE is just sitting idle on my computers. Still, If I can do it all in PrPro, I just get lazy sometimes.
Just wait until you start Keyframing Motion>Scale and Motion>Position (and dozens of other Effects) on individual Layers in a .PSD file. Man, the fun you can have!
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to un-grey-out "Image - Auto contrast"?

I just opened my first jpg in Photoshop CS5 and tried to use "Image -> Auto contrast" but all of the Auto's (Tone, Contrast, Color) are greyed out. The Image -> Mode is set to "RGB Color". There is only one layer and I tried various combinations of selecting (Command A) and de-selecting (Command D) the image but the Auto's stay grey.
The latest Photoshop CS5 Extended (Version 12.0.2) is running on a Mac Book (Snow Leopard 10.6.6).
I'm reading Peter Bauer's "Photoshop CS5 for Dummies" and Scott Kelby's "Photoshop CS5 Book" but can't find the answer in either. I also searched the forum for "auto contrast greyed out" but got 0 hits.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The whole issue of working non-destructively may be of little importance if you are starting out in Photoshop and are acquainting yourself with the various tools and features, but later on it can become a significant time-saver.
The Photoshop Help offers something on the issue, too (see »Nondestructive editing«).
Basically the target is maintaing pixels content intact and any corrections (both of form and color) editable.
The techniques employed to achieve this include:
    • Performing Touch-up (Clone Stamping and Spot Healing) on separate Layers
    • using Layer Masks instead of deleting and erasing
    • using Adjustment Layers instead of applying an Adjustment directly whenever possible
    • performing Transformations, Puppet Warps and Filter applications on Smart Objects
    etc.
Anyway, I may have been hasty previously; the Help states (p.136, following similar points for Auto Contrast):
Remove a color cast using Auto Color
Auto Color adjusts the contrast and color of an image by searching the image to identify shadows, midtones, and highlights. By default, Auto Color neutralizes the midtones using a target color of RGB 128 gray and clips the shadows and highlight pixels by 0.5%. You can change these defaults in the Auto Color Correction Options dialog box.
    1Do one of the following:
•Click the Levels or Curves icon in the Adjustments panel.
•Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer and choose either Levels or Curves. Click OK in the New Layer dialog box.
Note: You can also choose Image > Auto Color to apply the adjustment directly to the image layer. Keep in mind that this method discards image information and is automatic. You cannot adjust any of the options in the following steps.
2In the Adjustments panel, Alt-click (Windows) or Option-click (Mac OS) the Auto button.
3Under Algorithms in the Auto Color Correction Options dialog box, select the Find Dark & Light colors option.
4Select the Snap Neutral Midtones option.
5Specify the shadows and highlights that are clipped, and adjust the target color for the midtones.
6Click OK to apply Auto Color.
So the result should be achievable with a Levels or Curves Layer straight out.
